kyle peers up to the sky, sweltering heat and the bright sunlight does not make it easier for kyle to keep performing for pokeathlon courses. not like that'll stop him until he gets good scores.

"you ready?" he asks his furfrou.

the normal-type cotton guards up, buffing its defenses. another coat of fur covers the pokemon's body. kyle knows that the layer wasn't as soft as it originally was, more opted for protection than anything else, and so he doesn't try to pet it afterwards.

he looks up to his teammates afterwards, waiting for them to take the first step through the course after they've readied up.

New as Gavin's Metagross was to the team, the strange steel creature had been pulling its weight. Its ability to PSYCH ITSELF UP and mirror the effects of more useful moves was invaluable in a competition like this.[break][break]

Oscar too had been at this all day, but he managed to stay fresh with the help of his overly prepared and stuffed bag of amenities back on the beach. He was pumped to take on this obstacle course, and sent out his Chandelure Zule to tackle this challenge. At first Zule thought her master was having a jest with her. Did he really expect a regal pokemon such as herself to perform through an obstacle course? Over water?

She she quickly realized he was serious and let out a haunting noise. She would get him back for this nonsense. She Psyched Herself Up before floating forward. If she had to do this,s he was doing to do this with style and finesse.

Used Psych Up to copy the stat boost from Cotton Guard

This team was a weird combination but Vanessa did not mind as long as she would win. She released Zeus into the defense course and made the pokémon toughen up with COTTON GUARD. “Alright, let’s go!”

She watched kyle lopez looked over his teammates; the lady, recognizing the man as one of the Elite Four and the judges of the pokémon contest she earned her prestige from, returned a wink before speeding through the race with her altaria.

kyle gives vanessa a wink too in return. as natural as it looks, it's becoming more of a habit to respond to winks with another wink than a conscious effort to return them.

returning to his furfrou, he eases him up in a soft call. "we're going in," he instructs.

kyle and his pokemon go in through a narrow strip. parts of the wall attempt to push them as its splits off from the main one all of a sudden, but the furfrou manages to get another layer of cotton guard to assure its defenses as it blocks it to allow safe passage.

as they traverse, kyle keeps to his side, allowing his pokemon to take in the hits for the both of them.

Metagross finishes its PSYCH UP; it shimmers with the energy, though outwardly there is no physical change as with Furfrou's fluff.[break][break]

Gavin charges into the course, trusting the buffed-up dual-type to protect him from hazards. It uses its own body as a shield, intercepting whatever traps its trainer triggers and preventing him from getting knocked off course. Thankfully, the Metagross' ability to hover allowed it to easily recover from being nudged off course.[break][break]

Zule was much more delicate than her compatriots, but her Psych Up made up for that with confidence. She floated between obstacles, and unleashed her rage upon those she couldn't dodge to keep Oscar from getting hit. Oscar was sure to provide encouragement, "You're doing great, keep it up!" Zule glared back at Oscar, still sour that she had to do this at all. He was lucky he had been Hexed into the water or something by now.

The challenge has not even started fully when Vanessa fell off after being hit by a padded revolving pole. She yelled with an agitated tone from the depth of his—her lungs before Zeus swoop down to save her trainer. “That’s a close one!”

The altaria looked at Vanessa and just shook her head as she used another COTTON GUARD and eyeing for his trainer to get close to him.

eventually, they reach the halfway point. kyle doesn't stop going, and instead taps his furfrou from behind along with an instruction. "make a mad dash," he tells his pokemon.

the furfrou obliges blindly and enthusiastically. it runs straight ahead, triggering all the traps that would've been otherwise obstacles for the trainer and the pokemon.

each hit from multiple sources of obstacles gets absorbed by the furfrou's armor. large ball gets deflected by the furfrou's sheer toughness and its legs withstand against jets of water that would've otherwise pushed him off of the course.

kyle, on the otherhand, just follows after his pokemon after traps have been sprung, suing a moment of the cooldown to slip in.

They come to a jump that Gavin's not confident in. If he doesn't make it, it'll cost precious time that they can't afford if they want to top the charts.[break][break]

He looks to his Metagross, a Pokemon he'd yet to bond with enough to trust, and takes a literal leap of faith.[break][break]

If he missed, he could only hope that the dual-type would be quick enough and willing enough to catch him.[break][break]

While glaring at Oscar, a large bat smacked Zule off course, her proximity to Oscar pushing him off as well. "Fuck fuck fuck!" Oscar yelled, clasping onto Zule as she tried to float back on track. She let out a low hum, unamused by having to carry her heavy master, as well as be mindful not to graze him with her flames. Although, she had half a mind to burn hos soul away, darn pest. She got back onto the course and Oscar hopped off. Oscar groaned, "That wouldn't have happened if you weren't distracted." Zule huffed and surged forward, pounding on any other obstacle that tried to swat her.

Vanessa could tell her early fall made it difficult for her to keep up with the team. It was not easy pushing the altaria towards the course, blocking potential foam bats and obstacles that might push them off the platform. Until she had the crazy idea. “Zeus, destroy them.”

The altaria hesitated for a second, trying to understand what his trainer meant at the moment. Until he had the crazy idea too. As they pushed forward the hurdles of the knock off course, DRACO METEOR destroyed all other boulders that keep slowing them in the race.

the wag of the furfrou's tail gives kyle relief that he knows that his pokemon hasn't forsaken him yet after he threw him out to be a decoy for every obstacle. he makes a reminder for himself to give him a treat afterwards.

the final stretches of the course comes to view. there's only a few meters left to run, and all kyle needs to do now is to stick close to his pokemon and make sure he doesn't get thrown off after all the progress they have made.

kyle and his furfrou keeps their pace even and steady, his pokemon ready to block anything that would come for them.

Gavin loses his footing on the difficult jump, feels himself slipping, but his Metagross is fast in its response. Utilizing its MAGNET RISE, it breaks his fall — albeit uncomfortably, knocking the breath from Gavin's lungs — and deposits him onto the platform.[break][break]

Lying on his back, wheezing, Gavin chokes out, "Thanks."[break][break]

Metagross doesn't react save to position itself in front of the next obstacle, clearing a path for its trainer to advance. From here, they could see the end.[break][break]
