The older woman gave a little start, as if Ann’s proclamation of hunger had surprised her. “Oh! You are hungry?” she asked, concerned. “We can share the sweet potato! I have many extra. It is a nice memory, so I do not mind roasting some!”

She drew closer to the fire, warming her hands. The Machamp set the box of sweet potatoes down next to her and Michi rummaged around in her oversized bag, looking for something. She was known for being very well prepared as well as thrifty—it happened she had some tinfoil left over from the packed lunch she’d taken to Verdanturf that afternoon.

“Do you know how to make?” Michiko asked kindly, working to smooth the crinkles out of the sheet of tinfoil. She took the potato Matchan had been tossing earlier and wrapped it up in the foil, then looked around for a stick to use to roll it with. Finding one nearby, she carefully rolled the foil-wrapped sweet potato into the coals at the edge of the fires “Ah! There. It will be done soon, and then we can enjoy!”

Michi sat down on a stump, watching Ann with a slightly concerned tilt of the head. “Did you forget to eat a meal?” she asked kindly. She wondered where Ann’s family was—there were so many young trainers in Hoenn without their parents. Michi sighed. “My daughters—they are maybe your age—they are studying abroad in Unova! They study very hard—so hard they forget to eat sometimes, also!” She laughed.

Ann's reaction frightened Michiko almost as much as the other way around. The older woman jumped, putting both hands over her heart. She looked mortified. "Eek! I am sorry! Were you surprised?"

She wrung her hands, continuing to apologize earnestly for startling the young woman. "I am very sorry, truly. I am only returning home from shopping," she explained. The Machamp behind her grunted, hefting the heavy crates of fruit and sweet potatoes. "It is good exercise to walk, for a healthy lifestyle!"

She inched closer to the fire, almost unconsciously. The warmth was familiar and nostalgic. The smell of smoke reminded her of her mother's backyard on autumn nights and she sighed wistfully. "Ah, the fire is so nice... I have many sweet potatoes." A little shyly, the older woman added. "If it is okay, maybe, we can roast some together! It has been a long time... when I was a child, I did it often."

Matchan reached into one of the crates with a spare hand and tossed a sweet potato towards Ann, expression already resigned. It was detours like this that always made these trips to the marketplace so long.

Michiko suppressed a sigh, one reusable shopping bag in each hand as she trudged through Rusturf Tunnel. Matchan, her Machamp, stomped along behind her, his four arms equally laden with crates of sweet potatoes and persimmons from the Verdanturf Market.

“It’s getting cold, isn’t it?” she said aloud, voice echoing from the tunnel walls.

“Maaa…” The exertion of carrying all the fruits was keeping Matchan warm, but he could see Michi shivering. “Cha?” There was a bright light ahead of them—they must be nearing the end of the tunnel.

“Oh, someone is camping!” Michi exclaimed, seeing the same flickering light. It looked like someone had started a bonfire. The sight warmed her heart—how seasonal! “Hello,” she called a little shyly as they drew near. “It is cold tonight, isn’t it?”

"Oh! I understand!" Michi said as Melody reminded her the Sootopolis Gym actually doubled as a concert hall. With that in mind, of course it made sense that Melody would be used to using powerful singing moves. "I want to visit Sootopolis again soon!" she said wistfully. It was a good thing nothing bad had happened there since Rayquaza had attacked the lighthouse and subsequently disappeared.

Fweeeew!

Michi turned in surprise to see Charmmy go sailing past her in a comet of rumpled pink fur, ears and whiskers streaming as the impact with Moon Blast repelled her from its surface like a reverse magnetic charge. "Ah!" she exclaimed, dismayed, as the cat finally landed on the ground almost on the other side of the gym. She did not get up.

Michi clasped her hands together, turning back towards Melody. "Oh! You have defeated Charmmy Skitty!" she cried, surprise changing into delight and relief. "Ahh, thank goodness. I was worried it would be too difficult..." It was a clear overestimation of the Kitten Pokemon's power, but Michi was so sincere it was hard to fault her.

Part of the Petalburg Traditional Initiative was putting the city's name out there through increased gym and promotional activity, especially to draw beginning trainers just starting out on their journey. If she actually failed to give out a gym badge, especially to an experienced gym leader like Melody, she would create a bad reputation for her city.

Clasping her hands together, Michi met Melody in the center of the gym. "You are a strong trainer!" she exclaimed, "Primarina is very amazing! Next time, maybe Lapras will fight also." She smiled at the pop idol and gave a deep bow, showing her gratitude and respect.

She straightened up, using both hands to deferentially extend not the Modern Badge, but a neat set of paperwork. "Please complete these forms and the badge will be delivered to your address in 2-3 business weeks," she said earnestly, conscious of the inconvenience but hoping the other gym leader would understand. "Melody... thank you very much. I enjoy my first challenge, because of you. Thank you for your support!"

reminiscent of a silver tatami mat, the badge of Petalburg City represents its bearer's commitment to tradition and flexibility in modern times.

Michi was pleased that Rowan seemed to be enjoying the many baseball mascots of Petalburg City, but the greatest sights were yet to come. It was several streets past Yahoo!PetalDome before the jewel of of the city came into view, the modern beacon: Petalburg Tower.

"Look! You can see it!" Michi exclaimed, pointing over a row of convenience stores and Hot Pot restaurants towards the sleek, angular shape rising above the bay. "At night, it is lit up with many different patterns! Because now is September, the pattern is..." Michi flipped through her pamphlet, "...Moon-Viewing! Ah! Of course! Now, I remember."

The picture showed the tower illuminated in a deep blue lights with a series of LED panels entirely filling one tapered side, a white full moon rising towards the peak with the traditional Umbreon symbol curled comfortably at its center. "You should come back in the evening. It is very beautiful," Michi said wistfully.

The bus had turned and was headed closer to the tower, and it became even more beautiful up close. Near the base, where many tourists and sightseers were wandering, a large, shiny Pokemon was handing out pamphlets next to several smiling city workers.

"Oh, this Pokemon is PeTa! It is another mascot character," Michi explained, gesturing with an open hand towards the Duraludon. "There are many mascots because children think they are cute, and goods are easy to make!" That was the city's theory, anyway. She showed off a goofy 'PeTa' keychain she had clipped to her phone case.

The bus made a loop around the central tower area, where colorful Magikarp jumped from the fountains on either side of the square. People laughed and shied back occasionally as they were caught off-guard by the rogue Splash attack, grateful for the relief from the heat.

THE MECHANISM

AS KIBOU WIGGLES ALONG, the tough-talking pink Dunsparce begins to feel something strange beneath his scaly belly. The ground becomes bumpy, sloping down and down like layers of stacked fungi. The rings of cacti and desert shrubbery have disguised weathered, eroded stair-steps carved by ancient humans.

With his squinty snake-eyes, Kibou can pick out the true nature of this natural garden: a set of sloping terraces, remnants of ancient agriculture lost to time. Choked with dirt and age, small rivets and canals run along the length of each terrace. Once, perhaps, they brought water and irrigation to fields of crops.

...But from where? The underground river where you trawled for hidden wonders seems a long way away.

Lil Busters uses the power of numbers to uncover the remaining three cairns, finding each one roughly the same distance from one another. While their efforts at tracking the four down are unparalleled, actually invoking the mechanism takes a more dexterous set of paws.

Rampardos chuffs in the background, grateful for the first aid from its new friends, as Niamh works on the second stone cairn. The Riolu's paws run gently around the piled stones, sorting through the bits of coin and seed piled up around it. There is an engraving in the pedestal—an palm-sized circle etched with rays. It's just the right size to be pressed.

Something clicks.

The gathering storm clouds overhead part as a beam of light lances the heavens from the stone cairn, piercing the gray veil. An eye of sunlight appears, broadening rapidly until only clear blue skies remain.

With it comes harsh sunlight. The stone and sand beneath your feet begins to heat like a cast-iron pan, becoming uncomfortably hot underfoot. You may find yourselves retreating to the shade of Rampardos' belly for safety as the sun burns ruthlessly overhead.

"...Do you guys want some fruit?" the cactus-braving Sprinkles asks, returning from her conquest without a scratch and with a cluster of juicy-looking purple cactus fruit filling her jaws.

Teeth pricking their outer flesh, the sweet taste seeps into her senses.

SPRINKLES has consumed CACTUS FRUIT x1

Choose one ally. Sprinkles' feelings for this Pokemon feel curiously enhanced. Very enhanced. Could this be... love?
Sprinkles will gain a +10 to Battle rolls while fighting beside this ally and will feel compelled to take damage for them in combat.
This effect will wear off in two posting cycles. 1 fruit remains.

You have activated the SUNNY cairn. As the temperature rises, it may be difficult to stay here for much longer—but with the storm dispelled, how will you catch any lightning?

Outperformed, the Breloom realized too late that the movement had been a feint as the Metagross's Agility carried it out of range. He twisted in the air, trying to keep sight of the shiny chrome creature, only to find the Metagross at his back already readying a deadly Psychic attack.

The crowd roared in excitement as pink energy surrounded the fighting-type, rendering his physical fitness irrelevant. "Mind over matter!" Mickey called, mustache bristling. "Psychic is a strong move, and keeps Rui here at range away from your Metagross!" It was a classic strategy, but unfortunately, this challenge was about showcasing new moves and abilities. Still, one couldn't argue it was ineffective.

Rui slammed into the gym floor, his spores rising in a dull cloud around his body. It was becoming clear it would be difficult to catch the Metagross in physical contact. Limping, the Breloom picked himself off the floor, earning a round of applause from the college students, and braced himself.

Near the ceiling of the gym, a circle of rotating, fist-sized seeds materialized, perhaps escaping immediate notice until they marshalled themselves and rained down like firebombs from a flowery air raid.

Pheeeew.... BANG!

"That's a Seed Bomb attack!" Mickey trumpeted, seeing his Pokemon's strategy, "First coined and captured in Sinnoh! Fill the air, Rui, let's see if he's agile enough to dodge all of them at once!"

A second concentric ring of spinning seeds rained from above like meteors, exploding on contact in bursts of shrapnel like popping popcorn.

Michiko covered her ears as Primarina's Hyper Voice filled the fluttering paper walls, dropping her dynamite gym leader pose. It made her feel dizzy, and a little sick, but she tried hard to compose her expression so as not to embarrass Melody. She didn't want the other gym leader to think she didn't like her Primarina, after all.

In reality, the woman on the other side of the room got the easy treatment. Charmmy Skitty was the one at close-range when the seal opened its mouth, and the sound was devastating. Charmmy tumbled off the water-type's ponytail, her ears flattened to her head and squinty eyes wide with shock and dismay. She tried to battle the Hyper Voice with her own sound-based move--a Sing attack--but the caterwauling was overpowered and she gave up, clamping her jaws shut. Trying to beat the singing seal at her own game was impossible!

Instead, the Skitty flattened herself to the ground like a boneless pancake next to her opponent, hissing. When the sound finally tapered off, she lashed out with a stubby paw, batting at the seal's mermaid-like tail like a cat with a fishy toy. The move was Wake-Up Slap, but who could have slept through that noise? Her brains were scrambled.

Michiko offered no battle support, merely commenting "It is... a little noisy, isn't it?" from across the gym. Why did Pokemon battles always turn out so noisy? "But, it is powerful! It is so amazing," she added quickly. She smiled at Melody, clasping her lanyard nervously.

RAMPARDOS FIGHTS BACK. But the dino is no match for the lightning-quickness of the Orb-boosted Pantry Raiders, and it has certainly underestimated the group of weak-looking Pokemon it jumped into. Retribution is swift, and the giant is toppled in literal seconds.

Niamh's claws tear a scrap of cloth free from the ancient Pokemon's spikes as she delivers the final blow. Its cheeks swollen from Wake-Up Slaps and nose dripping blood from Metal Claw, Rampardos can hardly take a step before Kibou's pit trap opens up beneath its feet.

It hits the ground with a thunderous crash.

"UGHHH..." It moans and groans. Somehow, sense comes out of it.

"You beat me..."

A bubble of blood pops in its nostril. Its eyes cloud with a strange glow, entranced by the power of the Orb.

"Let me join you."

RAMPARDOS consumes 10 resources.

Boosts user's evasion. While wearing this band, the user's Battle rolls will only negate the user by -5 HP. Ongoing effect.

With your new, carnivorous pack mule in tow, you're able to catch up with Lil' Busters and Niamh at the edge of the treeline. Thickets of prickly pear and juniper have been steadily encroaching along the cliff walls and they form a wall of tough greenery, blocking the way forward.

Thump, thump, thump. It proves no problem for Rampardos to crash through the barrier, opening a makeshift doorway for its new "friends."

Inside, a plethora of desert plants cluster in the shade of cedar and sequoia trees, forming a lush (albeit deadly) garden of thorns and brightly-colored blossoms.

Some of the cactus appear to be fruiting. Juicy-looking purple fruits dangle just out of reach, crowned by handfuls of brutally sharp cactus spines. Is it worth it? Eating them might supplement your current Resources, but you know what they say about cactus juice...

Lil' Busters' careful patrolling of the border has turned up something... strange. A CAIRN of round stones stands near the path, overgrown with brambles. It seems to be a traveler's shrine. Small trinkets and coins are stacked in small piles which mimic the balancing stones, as well as little offerings of flowers gone to seed.

LIL' BUSTERS has found a BLAST SEED

Spends 1 Resource. Eat this seed to blast your opponent with your explosive breath! Substitute a 100 for your next Battle roll.

If the Pantry Raiders venture deeper into this desert garden, they'll find three more of these cairns scattered throughout the area. There seems to be some kind of mechanism built into them.

Their function, and their purpose, is unknown.

HOW WILL YOUR GARDEN GROW?

The cairn mechanism will activate with any Search roll over 70. If you fall short, you may choose to spend 5 group resources (representing time/effort) to re-roll.
This floor is more extensive than the others, so it may be a good time to Recover some HP after your battle!
You may also spend your rolls to further heal Rampardos or one another.

THE SPRING ripples with small, silvery bodies. They seem drawn to the creatures standing in the shallows and Niamh easily plucks them from the water as they swim near, collecting a sack of fresh, wriggling fish as additional snack food for the journey (+10 Resources).

The fish show little fear—and they just keep coming. Perhaps they have no natural predators in this cave. Or perhaps they hide a secret.

Something dark stirs, serpentine, beneath the surface.

At the same time, something sparkles among the rocks, the silt cleared away by Sprinkles' determined trawling.

SPRINKLES HAS FOUND THE QUICK ORB

Using this orb will double all team members' movement speed (number of actions) within the same area for one posting cycle.
+5 Resources have been gained from EATING JOLTIK.

As Lil' Busters bob above and below the surface, they see the disorganized school of fish begin to change, their tiny bodies working together in tandem to form a long, sinuous shape.

Needless to say, the team hurries up to cross the spring, no time for further dabbling in its depths. Who knows what would have happened once the fish finished their formation? (+5 to All Players from Scout)

Ascending back into the light, Michiko's Pantry Raiders, led by speedy jar-bearer Kibou, find the sky now clouded over in the canyon. Thunder rumbles distantly, warning of distant rain. You feel it in the ground, in the jitter of small pebbles, in the distant thud-thud-thud of footsteps.

Your close call at the spring has danger fresh on your minds. A roar fills your ears and two huge, clawed feet thunder down almost on top of you, cracking the red stone with a sound like a shotgun blast. A RAMPARDOS vaults from a high cliff ledge, its tail sweeping out in an arc of bludgeoning force.

"RUUUOGGHGHHAAGGHHHH!"

THE STRAY

THE DRY RIVERBED carves an easy path through red stone and dusty rock formations. Lil' Busters, Kibou, and Niamh set a terrifying pace along the bottom of the creekbed, motivated by their mission. The team makes a smooth journey towards the rocky cliffs. If any wild Pokemon prowl nearby, defending their territories, they are not swift enough to offer resistance.

Sprinkles is less focused. As she looks, listens, looks again, a sound can be heard tinkling through the rock.

Something mewls.

A tiny, injured creature cowers in a small alcove, little more than a blob of yellow fluff. Its sides tremble with fear as Sprinkles discovers it. For whatever reason, it seems too weak to even spark in self-defense.

It's easy prey, albeit slim pickings, but perhaps its blinking blue eyes spark some sympathy within the Skitty.

HEAL JOLTIK - Consume 10 Resources

EAT JOLTIK - Gain 5 Resources
IGNORE JOLTIK - Nothing Happens

Regardless of Sprinkles' choice, the path stretches onwards. The team reaches the end of the riverbed-- a weathered gap in the rock that leads down to the river's source, an underground spring.

Descending down the jagged walls with little idea of what lies ahead, the team finds themselves half-stranded above the pool of dark, rippling water. As far as you're concerned, there is no other way to cross the spring but to swim.

Surely, the water will break your fall.

A glint in the shallows catches Sprinkles' attention. Something marble-sized and smooth, which has a strange, inviting aura.

SPRINKLES has found the INVITING ORB

Using it allows you to befriend Pokémon you battled. The effect continues while you're on the floor you used the orb on.

Other twinkles of light glimmer beneath the surface, suggesting more orbs hidden in the depths. Perhaps this spring naturally creates such things. Then again, perhaps it's just the silvery bodies of tiny fish that make their homes here. They seem harmless—perhaps even tasty.

If Sprinkles chose to HEAL JOLTIK, it will join the team as a passive party member.
