Michiko returned to Melody's side, looking defeated. "I am not very much a cat person," she admitted, grateful for the other gym leader's sympathy. "It is... so difficult to control..."

When she'd used Charmmy to fight Zac Ramsay for his badge, the Kitten Pokemon had battled mostly on her own, with little to no coaching from Michi. Maybe she was on good behavior because Matchan was there, Michi thought. She stifled a giggle. I know I am on my good behavior when my husband is around. Or was she...

Fortunately, Melody came up with an excellent plan! Michi clapped her hands, enthralled. "Oh! It is a good idea, Melody! Let's try!"

They stood inside the main "battle" room of the Petalburg Gym, the surrounding maze of tatami rooms giving way to smooth, lacquered wood that creaked musically underfoot like Oricorio song. The pink blob of the Skitty on the far side of the room was an easy target.

"MWEEP!"

The 'minimum' Icy Wind set Skitty's fur ruffling, blown up completely the wrong way as if tousled by huge, cold hands. Furious (and still sleepy), the kitten Pokemon's tail and legs stiffened. Charmmy whipped around, glaring at the Primarina. She arched her back and hissed.

"It is working!" Michi cried, jubilant. She struck a high-powered pose on the battlefield, her "PETALBURG CITY EMPLOYEE #210441" lanyard whipping behind her in the wintery breeze. "Our true power, unlock! Skitty—" She brought up one hand in a crescent shape, "Heart—" She brought up the other hand, completing the heart, and thrust it away from herself towards Melody and Primarina. "Attack!"

Heart Attack wasn't the best name for a move, which is probably why Skitty used Feint Attack instead. "MEW!" The feline scampered close and sprung into the air, form seeming to blur and reappear at the last moment so she could try and cling to the seal's ponytail and kick at it with her back paws.

"Kick, kick!" Michi called supportively, deeply relieved. "Oh, she is so cute... perhaps, I can be a cat person after all..."

THE JAR

“You must be Michiko’s Pantry Raiders,” said the Gumshoos, eying the newly-assembled party of Pokemon. They were here for the expedition: no trainers permitted. “Huh. Think you can live up to the name?”

The mongoose folds his arms behind his back, pacing in front of the Skitty, Riolu, Dunsparce, and Falinks with a critical expression. “They call me Shuu. Mickey’s put me in charge of your expedition, so you’ll be answering to me back here at Ground Zero. Here’s your badges.”

He passes out a quartet of Explorer Badges, which look curiously similar to the rectangular Modern Badge given out at the Petalburg Gym. “Something bad happens, activate one of these and we’ll send someone out to fetch you back. Gotta give back the badge, though. Here's your packs, rations, and healing supplies too. Don't waste 'em.”

Last, he hands the four of you a large glass jar with an earthenware seal. The material is slightly frosted, worn like sea-glass and weathered by time. There’s a strange, luminescent quality to the jar, as if it’s made from an unusual material.

“Last thing: debrief. The big man’s studying this artifact right now-- the way the theory goes, it was used to collect lightning by the ancients. Don’t,” the Gumshoos said very clearly, “Break this jar. We need you to take it to the top of the MONZEN RUINS before the storm hits, and see if there’s truth to the theory. Maybe it’s just a legend, who knows. Maybe it does something totally different.”

A gleam seemed to appear in the creature’s eye. “Or maybe you’ll catch some lightning.”

A DRY RIVERBED stretches before you, winding deep into the rocky, cactus-studded hills. Ominously—or perhaps fortuitously—dark clouds collect on the horizon, foretelling rain. Shuu coughs. “Better get going. Storm’s on its way.”

ONE OF YOU MUST TAKE THE GLASS JAR.

Whoever has the jar will suffer a -5 penalty to rolls for the round.
You may change who’s carrying the jar at any time.

"Is that Clear Body I see?" Mickey adjusted his glasses, noticing something shimmering around the silvery body of his opponent's Metagross. "That brings back memories! I wrote one of my first dissertations about the practical applications of Clear Body to the ancient peoples of Hoenn."

A groan went up from the stands as the man warmed to his topic, hoping part of his lecture might passively sink into his students' heads. Much as he enjoyed Clear Body, it had been around when he and Michi were kids, and it had an integral role in Hoenn's history already. Lars wouldn't be receiving any points for its use.

But Mickey didn't mind. It was great to see contrast on the field. If both of them only used new moves and abilities, how could they see how far Pokemon Battling had come?

Telekinesis, however, had a very positive reaction from the onlookers. Students cheered in the stands as the Metagross used its psychic abilities to maneuver itself away from the deadly first strike. "1 point, challenger!" called the announcer.

The leaderboard on the far side of the game ticked to 1 for Lars. There was a round of applause.

Applause and lectures didn't stop battles, however, and Rui continued to pursue his opponent. His small, beady black eyes darted back and forth, trying to read the Metagross's unnatural, psychic-powered movements.

Where was he going next?

Rui closed his eyes, reaching out with his senses towards the floating titan. He used MIND READER.

There was a loud slap as the grass-type's tail hit the ground, catapulting him into the air. Ro had avoided him before by floating into the air-- but not even the sky was unbreakable.

One fist charging with the light of SKY UPPERCUT, Rui launched himself towards Metagross's shiny steel belly.

The little woman hurried onto the bus, clasping her hands together when she saw the enthusiastic young man already taking a picture of his Prinplup. "It is nice to have a souvenir!" she exclaimed, setting her handbag down in the row in front of Rowan and taking a seat at the window herself. "This is Petalburg City Hall! It is not so special," she admitted, "Sometimes, I go to work here." Between the Visitor's Center and filing paperwork for the city, Michi kept herself busy.

The bus began to move, turning between tall, polished buildings and making its way towards the freeway onramp. "Downtown Petalburg was not so..." Michi made a futile "tall" gesture towards the fourteen-story buildings, "...when I was a child! There were only rice fields. But this is only a small area."

She continued to point out little cafes and recommended a local hostel as the bus made it onto the onramp and merged up and over the city, providing a spectacular view of the ocean. "Ahhh! Isn't it nice?" Michi sighed. "This is Petalburg Harbor, to the right."

Wingull perched in rows along the railing, and a cluster of bright blue Cramorant stood at the edge of a pier, their wings half-spread and drying in the sun. "Across the bay you can visit the Seaside Park!" Michi explained, flipping to a page in the tour pamphlet to show Rowan the fields of starry, pale blue blossoms in the spring. "There are many flowers, and an aquarium also! It is good for weddings, I think."

MUSHARNA SWARM (METEORIC MEETINGS)

Michiko was not one of the original victims of the strange sleep which swept through the town near Verdanturf. But she was surprised, after parking her car and looking for her reusable grocery bag, when the Rangers arrived in force.

"What is happening?" she called, rolling down her car window as one of the men passed by. The man explained the situation and warned her to get back into the car until the Musharna swam was contained. "Ah, but I am wanting to go to to the bakery..."

She was told (firmly) that was no reason for a civilian to go straight into danger. Michi thought about the bump on her head she would surely wake up with if she fell asleep while walking to the bakery and sighed, giving up. She could go to the one near Petalburg, she supposed, though it wasn't nearly as delicious as the Bliss Family Bakery she'd been frequenting since it opened.

It was such a shame, she thought as she backed out of the parking lot and turned back up the deserted street. Something strange caught her eye as she stopped at a traffic signal, and Michi leaned forward to see a wisp of bright pink smoke trickling out of a storm drain.

Could I catch it?

The Rangers were all still crossing the crosswalk, speaking urgently into handheld radios. Feeling sneaky, Michi rolled down her window and tossed a Pokeball into the drain, wondering what she would catch.

“Traps?!” Michiko exclaimed. Surprise at the question was written clearly across her face. Then she covered her mouth with her hand, hiding a secret smile. “No, there is no traps,” she assured Melody, “If it was true, I would always fall in them… I am a little clumsy.”

That said, she didn’t warn her fellow gym leader about the Normal-Type Pokémon hiding in one of the tatami rooms, ready to attack! If it wasn’t sleeping, anyway.

She’d already forgotten which room the mysterious Pokémon was supposed to be in, and her anxiety showed as the slippered women tiptoed through two tatami rooms without any interference, the soft sound of sliding doors fluttering behind them.

In the last tatami room, however, the Petalburg Gym’s “trap” finally reared its head. “MEW!” squeaked a Skitty as the two women attempted to pass through the final doorway.

“Oh no! It is Charmmy Skitty!” Michi cried with all the acting skills of a parent on Christmas Day defending Santa Claus. “She is named after a famous character,” she added, less convincingly. “But! It is not the same as Hello Skitty. They are different characters.”

“Mew!” Charmmy agreed, turning and trotting away through the open sliding door. Michiko made a soft ahh! sound of distress. “Noo! You are supposed to battle!” the little housewife whispered desperately, chasing after it. It was moments like these that reminded her why she did not like Skitty so much.

It was a fine day at Petalburg City University. Students crowded the bleachers in the gym, some of them with genuine excitement, others clearly only for extra credit as part of a class assignment.

The door swung open and a tall, mustached professor with his hair pulled back in a neat bun entered the gym. He smiled tolerantly as the archeology department began to chant "Go Doc Mountain!"

"Hello there! Thank you for agreeing to come out here today for the demonstration," he said to his first challenger, striding across the gym to meet the blond man at the center line.

He gave the Head Ranger a firm, hearty handshake. "You've helped my wife out in the past, as I understand it! It's much appreciated," he added warmly, "I worry about her when I'm out of town."

He strode back to the far side of the gym as the announcer began to speak over the loudspeakers. "Students of Petalburg U! It's time for a classic HOENN battle! These local Pokemon have changed a lot in the last generation, so watch carefully and take notes!"

"There won't be a test afterwards!" Mickey called, eyes fixed on Lars. He smiled broadly. "Or homework, if your teacher wins!" Everyone cheered.

He tossed a Pokeball forward and a BRELOOM took shape at center court, flexing its claws experimentally. It shook its head and a cloud of spores flew loose, settling around it in a soft, shimmering dust. It sneezed.

"Would you like to go first, or shall I?" Mickey called, offering his opponent the first move. After his decision, the professor gave Lars a nod and raised his voice. "All right! Mach Punch, Rui!"

Breloom seemed to cross the gym in a heartbeat, the warning scrape of his claws reaching his opponent only after he was already in their face. The grass-type lashed out in a closed-fist jab, spores swirling from the impact.

Michiko waved at Rowan Wrynn when she saw him, lowering the sign with his name she'd been holding. "Hello!" she exclaimed. There was a swish of frizzy hair as she bowed to the young man and then straightened up again. "I am Michiko, please call me Michi! I hope today will be fun for you..."

The smell of bus exhaust was thick in the air, making her lightheaded, but Michi was eager to share in a tour of her city with a curious foreigner. She had been looking forward to promoting the open-top bus tours in Petalburg City for a long time!

"Here is your ticket, and camera!" Michi said, offering Rowan a disposable camera from the city. The bus tour was free for Gym challengers, partially to promote the city itself, partially because the city hoped to capitalize on amateur photography for their latest line of brochures. Speaking of which... "There is a map and pamphlet, also... ehh?... where did I put it..."

Beep beep! Michi almost dropped her handbag. "Ah, time to go!" she exclaimed, looking up at the bus. The little woman gestured frantically for Rowan to go first and choose a seat for himself and his Prinplup.

"Oh, it is Lapras!" Michiko exclaimed enthusiastically. The little woman's eyes shone as she gazed up at the sleek, oceanic Pokemon. "It is also a famous character in a manga!"

Primarina was also beautiful, and Michi gave an admiring sigh. "Must be nice," she said, "Sootopolis Gym has a lot of water, so big water Pokemon are OK! There is only..." She made a gesture with her arms, "...small pond at my house, so my Pokemon also are small, to be able to fit. Oh, my husband!"

She broke off as a small compact car pulled up on the corner of the city block, driven by a handsome older man with a mustache. She picked up her skirts and hurried over to talk to him through the window before returning to the front of the gym with the keys in hand.

"Thank goodness... we can go in now," she said, sorting through the keyring. Various commemorative keychains chimed and jingled as she finally found the gym key. "Aha!"

Michi unlocked the door, releasing the warm, woodsy smell of bamboo mats and thin paper walls. "Please go in!" she said, ushering Melody inside. "Ah, and please take off your shoes! There is a shoebox..." She hurried to a row of cubbies, neatly setting out a pair of slippers for Melody to wear inside the gym.

Warm yellow lights glowed to life and Michi appeared again, putting on her reading glasses one-handed and struggling to read a map on a piece of notebook paper. "Mm, there is a tatami room gym puzzle," she explained, "But I forget which room is correct to go."

Turning the map around futilely, there was an embarrassed pause. "Maybe we can go together..."

30 years ago, MICHIKO MAEDA wished upon a falling star and met the love of her life. Now as they renew their MARRIAGE vows with new responsibilities on the horizon, will Jirachi bless this next chapter of their lives?

"This is unusual!" Mickey (Michi's husband) said, stroking his now-nonexistent mustache. He flexed his new gamer muscles, enjoying the youth and vitality of kyle lopez 's championesque body. "This phenomena has been documented by ancient Hoennians on carvings dating back to the Sasa era. I never thought I'd get to experience it myself!"

Fascinated, he reached out and prodded his own body's (Kyle's) face, barely registering the question. "Hm? Oh yes! I suppose we'll have to find a way to reverse it." His expression grew thoughtful. "I wonder: should you marry Michi, or should I? What's more important: the body, or the heart?"

"The heart!" Michiko (in the body of avery jones ) exclaimed, slamming open the back sliding door to the courtyard. She'd been praying fervently at the SHRINE TO JIRACHI. "Of course, the heart is most important!"

Despite being in a different body, her husband seemed to recognize his wife's demeanor immediately. His confidence dropped. "Michi! I thought you were upstairs, getting dressed!"

"Maybe that is someone else now!" Michi said, hurrying into the kitchen. "Everyone!" She raised her ( Avery's ) voice, hoping everyone would hear her. "Please, I saw Mr. Ji-Hoon and Cardamom are still OK! I think it is some food they were eating... please come to the dining room! If we eat, maybe we will change back!"

"Great idea!" Mickey said, still anxious to FIND THE RING before his wife noticed it was missing. "Be right there, sweetie!"

Melody Miro 's body slouched in and took a seat at the dining room table, shouting something in a dialect that had surely never passed the pop idol's lips before. "Mother!" Michi cried as she started to bring out the dishes the Bliss family as well as Chu-e had brought to the potluck. "Please be patient..."

Michiko Maeda, civil servant and Gym Leader (technically) of Petalburg City, searched through her purse outside the Hoennian-style building with an expression of growing alarm.

“Eh?? Oh no… the key… I will find…”

The little woman patted down the sides of her oversized handbag, realizing suddenly that she couldn’t remember where she’d put the key ring. Hadn't Mickey taken the car today?

“I will call my husband! Melody, I am sorry… there is no excuse!” Michi burst out suddenly. She bowed repeatedly to Melody Miro as she pulled out her cell phone, swiping past her cartoon Applin Lock Screen and going into her contacts. “Maybe, we have to gym battle outside… ah, but it looks like it will rain…”

One phone call later, Michi’s frayed nerves seemed mostly intact again as she let out a sigh of relief. She turned to Melody and announced “He will bring the key!”

She put her phone away, a silly picture of her husband closing out on screen from the ending call. She wondered if Melody had noticed. “I hope it is OK,” she ventured, hands clasping together. “Maybe while we little wait, you can show me your Pokémon!”

The little woman seemed to brighten at the idea, wondering what beautiful and stylish Pokémon the Sootopolis Gym Leader had decided to bring along.

Your search for the Petalburg Gym starts at the Petalburg Visitor’s Center, a small, quiet building stocked with pamphlets, brochures, and beautiful color posters of Normal-type Pokemon. The kiosk marked ‘Tourist Information’ is run by a small, nondescript middle-aged woman with frizzy black hair. She has a kind and eager personality and is more than happy to tell you all about Petalburg City and the various activities you can do here.

When you ask who to contact about arranging a challenge with the gym leader, she seems surprised. "Oh!" she says. "It is me…"

Traditional battles will be conducted in the historic Petalburg Gym. With its sliding-door tatami rooms and warmly lit interior, you're sure to feel refreshed and at home even as your Pokemon battle for your personal glory. Historically, this gym functioned as a sort of labyrinth, compelling a challenger to find the correct route through a series of tatami rooms to access the interior.

TRADITIONAL CHALLENGE

Personally battle vs Michiko, the Normal-Type Gym Leader, in a standard challenge: Petalburg-style! The battle will be short, with a focus on IC preparation and repercussions. The gym leader is restricted to using Normal-Type Pokemon. The challenger may use any number of Pokemon with no other restrictions.

CLASSIC CHALLENGE

You’re light years away from facing Michi! Drop by Petalburg University and battle Michiko’s husband in a thrilling match to show how the Pokemon world has changed since the early days of Hoenn. Demonstrate new moves, new abilities, and new features using classic Hoenn Pokemon to score points.

All Pokemon entered into a Classic Petalburg Battle must be from the Gen III Hoenn Pokedex (#252-#386). The challenger may bring two Pokemon. The battle will be 2v2 Singles.

This battle will use these rolling mechanics to decide the outcome and thread length. However, the badge will be only awarded based on the following point system:

Alolan/Galarian Forme - 2 Points

MODERN CHALLENGE

Feeling trigger happy? Enjoy a guided Open-Top Bus Tour of Petalburg City and try to snap some Insta-worthy pictures of Pokemon!

This is a mini-game based on Pokemon Snap. Each turn, a Pokemon will be generated for you to try and photograph. Line up the shot by rolling two dice (one for the horizontal axis and one for the vertical axis). The perfectly-centered shot is 50 | 50!

During the city tour, your character will be given a disposable camera with 5 free pictures. The tour will end after the 5 photos have been taken. You may bring one partner Pokemon with you for company on your tour, who you may also choose to photograph. Classic tourist.

After the tour, the gym leader will review your film. Spectacular photos suitable for tourism brochures, Petalburg Magazine, or Michi’s personal Instagram may merit a Gym Badge. For this reason, it may be best to prioritize Normal-Types, Rare/Unusual Pokemon, Hoenn Pokemon, or the Gym Leader's "secret" preferences.

PROGRESSIVE CHALLENGE

“Helping out with my wife’s new gym has really cut into my research time. [break]
Think you and some friends could spare your Pokemon to help me out on a little... expedition?”

This dungeon crawl is styled after Pokemon Mystery Dungeon and involves battle, exploration, and story progression. During this challenge, you will delve into previously-unexplored parts of Hoenn that have historically only been accessible by Pokemon.

You will not play your character during this challenge. Instead, you will play as your character’s Pokemon as they work together in a team of four to uncover lost secrets, ancient artifacts, and entire hidden worlds never witnessed by mankind. The challenge is similar to a Pokejob, but will be consistently moderated as players progress through the story and collect the required items.

This is primarily a resource management challenge. Four players must work together to complete the objective without running out of resources, which are consumed by taking actions over the course of the thread. You may encounter enemies, obstacles, and difficult choices. You may also acquire unique loot, items, and information that can be used during the challenge.

Success is not guaranteed. It is expected that some players will be eliminated or forced to turn back due to poor resource management.

This challenge may be undertaken multiple times, and any items gained in previous challenges can be kept and used again.

All players who complete the Progressive gym challenge and successfully deliver the objective back to Mickey will automatically receive the badge for their efforts.
