“You must be Michiko’s Pantry Raiders,” said the Gumshoos, eying the newly-assembled party of Pokemon. They were here for the expedition: no trainers permitted. “Huh. Think you can live up to the name?”

The mongoose folds his arms behind his back, pacing in front of the Skitty, Riolu, Dunsparce, and Falinks with a critical expression. “They call me Shuu. Mickey’s put me in charge of your expedition, so you’ll be answering to me back here at Ground Zero. Here’s your badges.”

He passes out a quartet of Explorer Badges, which look curiously similar to the rectangular Modern Badge given out at the Petalburg Gym. “Something bad happens, activate one of these and we’ll send someone out to fetch you back. Gotta give back the badge, though. Here's your packs, rations, and healing supplies too. Don't waste 'em.”

Last, he hands the four of you a large glass jar with an earthenware seal. The material is slightly frosted, worn like sea-glass and weathered by time. There’s a strange, luminescent quality to the jar, as if it’s made from an unusual material.

“Last thing: debrief. The big man’s studying this artifact right now-- the way the theory goes, it was used to collect lightning by the ancients. Don’t,” the Gumshoos said very clearly, “Break this jar. We need you to take it to the top of the MONZEN RUINS before the storm hits, and see if there’s truth to the theory. Maybe it’s just a legend, who knows. Maybe it does something totally different.”

A gleam seemed to appear in the creature’s eye. “Or maybe you’ll catch some lightning.”

A DRY RIVERBED stretches before you, winding deep into the rocky, cactus-studded hills. Ominously—or perhaps fortuitously—dark clouds collect on the horizon, foretelling rain. Shuu coughs. “Better get going. Storm’s on its way.”


ONE OF YOU MUST TAKE THE GLASS JAR.

Whoever has the jar will suffer a -5 penalty to rolls for the round.
You may change who’s carrying the jar at any time.

Your Pokemon have individual bonuses based on their typing:
  • Falinks (Fighting) +10 to Battle
  • Riolu (Fighting) +10 to Battle
  • Skitty (Normal) +10 to Progress
  • Dunsparce (Normal) +10 to Progress

All players who complete the Progressive Gym Challenge and successfully deliver the objective back to Mickey will automatically receive the MODERN BADGE for their efforts.

"AY! Gimme dat dere jaah!" said Kibou, through his thick accent. He maneuvered the empty jar onto his back, clenching his powerful wings around the object before wriggling off down the creek bed. 

"Oim a mahsta of hoilding jaahs," bragged the fat little serpent, as he slid over a thick river stone. His scales rasped along the rock, disturbing the dust. On his back the jar bobbed wildly, secure.

"atteeeeeeeeention!" the five of the six little soldiers took positions on each side of the dunsparce as it crawled along with one following behind it as the lead falinks waddled with sternness up front. "you heard Boss Shuu's orders! all units keep a close perimeter around lieutenant kibou! we are to keep him and the payload safe from any harm as we move up the mountain. is that clear!?"

"sir yes sir!"

the commander of the lil' busters troop nodded and turned his back on his troops to lead them forward to their target destination. "then onward march!" they were going to get this jar where it needed to go, even if it came down to the last man standing.

For her part, Niamh the Riolu looks utterly unimpressed as the name of their small band of adventurers is spoken aloud. It's a shame that only she can read auras; she'd kill for the others to know how hard she's cringing.

"I certainly hope not."

She vaguely understands the demand of the Dunsparce, Kibou (), and steps aside to allow delivery of said jar to go unimpeded.

Niamh turns to the Skitty ().

"Lightning in a bottle. Have you ever heard of that?"

She shakes her head and pushes forth in the interest of progress.

"Lightning! Lightning!" As the jar was passed to Kibou, Sprinkles was nearby, leaning in to stare in wonder at the strange jar. She giggled and hopped back so the Lil' Busters could take up their position, marching in line behind them in exaggerated movements. It only lasted a second before she laughed again, darting closer to Niamh, her tail swishing as the bell on her collar tinkled softly.

"No, but it sounds amazing! If I had lighting, I could make Sugar's fur stand on end when she tried to be mean to Pepper!" Another laugh, Sprinkles prancing beside Niamh as they moved, excited for the idea of adventure.

"Ooooh... what's that?!" Something with a small gleam caught the Skitty's attention, making her laugh before she darted off, intent on searching for whatever she had seen.

THE STRAY


THE DRY RIVERBED carves an easy path through red stone and dusty rock formations. Lil' Busters, Kibou, and Niamh set a terrifying pace along the bottom of the creekbed, motivated by their mission. The team makes a smooth journey towards the rocky cliffs. If any wild Pokemon prowl nearby, defending their territories, they are not swift enough to offer resistance.

Sprinkles is less focused. As she looks, listens, looks again, a sound can be heard tinkling through the rock. 

Something mewls.

A tiny, injured creature cowers in a small alcove, little more than a blob of yellow fluff. Its sides tremble with fear as Sprinkles discovers it. For whatever reason, it seems too weak to even spark in self-defense.

It's easy prey, albeit slim pickings, but perhaps its blinking blue eyes spark some sympathy within the Skitty.

HEAL JOLTIK - Consume 10 Resources
EAT JOLTIK - Gain 5 Resources
IGNORE JOLTIK - Nothing Happens

Regardless of Sprinkles' choice, the path stretches onwards. The team reaches the end of the riverbed-- a weathered gap in the rock that leads down to the river's source, an underground spring.

Descending down the jagged walls with little idea of what lies ahead, the team finds themselves half-stranded above the pool of dark, rippling water. As far as you're concerned, there is no other way to cross the spring but to swim.

Surely, the water will break your fall.

A glint in the shallows catches Sprinkles' attention. Something marble-sized and smooth, which has a strange, inviting aura. 

SPRINKLES has found the INVITING ORB
  • Using it allows you to befriend Pokémon you battled. The effect continues while you're on the floor you used the orb on.

Other twinkles of light glimmer beneath the surface, suggesting more orbs hidden in the depths. Perhaps this spring naturally creates such things. Then again, perhaps it's just the silvery bodies of tiny fish that make their homes here. They seem harmless—perhaps even tasty.

YOU MUST CROSS THE SPRING.

In addition to your normal rolls and actions, you may choose to:
  • FISH: Gain 5 resources.
  • TRAWL: +5 to Search
  • SNORKEL: +5 to Scout

If Sprinkles chose to HEAL JOLTIK, it will join the team as a passive party member.

Flanked by his tromping honor guard, Kibou approached the fallen insect. It was a pitiable sight, but could they spare the time and resources needed to help it? 

"Yaw cawl Springles," said the rugged Dunsparce. "Don wan 'im slowin us dahwn, but we coud youse a naytiv to gaide us ahp da mawntin."

The dark spring bubbled, glittering deeply like a forbidden wishing well.

Kibou's drill spun up to speed as he prepared for the crossing. At 80% body fat, Dunsparce was as buoyant as they came. "Ai'll cross, no sweat," he said, backing up to the water. His drill cut in to the surface and he shot off backwards across the spring, jar flailing safely on his back.

"make a decision quick private sprinkles! lightning waits for no pokemon and we do not want to miss our chance! do not lag behind!" the little joltik did look like it could use their help but they were also on a tight schedule that they needed to keep. hopefully the young soldier would make a beneficial choice for them.

up ahead however it seemed like they were going to have to take a detour as they found themselves over looking a spring that was almost inviting them for a swim as it was the only way forward even if it was one laden with risks. yet that didn't stop the dunsparce from going on ahead of them and jump into the water. at least he was brave. "prepare to be buoyant men! we're going for a swim!"

with that the falinks jumped into the spring one by one in an effort to move forward after their dunsparce companion and as they did a few of them decided to swim ahead to make sure that the way was clear for them to move forward and clear of any dangers.

"Oooooh...." Sprinkles stares into the Joltik's eyes. The Joltik stares back, eyes glistening with tears. As they both peer at each other, a bond starts to form... Until the 'splash' of her companions catches her attention.

"Ugh! Hey! Wait for me!" Crunch. The Joltik is no more, Sprinkles franticly chewing as she bounds over to the water. Her hackles are raised, but she takes a leap to try and jump on the very last of the Lil' Busters, whichever one was trailing behind, trying to use it as a boat so she didn't have to get her fur wet.

"Hey, hey! Slow down a little, I think I can get some fish!" Turning her head to pull her pretty bow off, leaving behind only her collar with the bell, Sprinkles uses the power of Mouth Magic to flare it out. She uses it as a makeshift Trawl, scooping at the tiny fish to try and get some. It doesn't seem to be working, but maybe she could find something else...?

Having forged ahead of Sprinkles while the little pink cat was busy nosing into things she shouldn't, Niamh glances back over her shoulder to observe the potential of a budding friendship between her teammate and some little yellow bug.

She might've disapproved if Sprinkles hadn't chosen that moment to eat the poor thing and catch up.

"Nice one. It looked weak anyway."

And as she'd learned in service of Rocket, there was no room for the weak.

As Lil' Busters scout ahead and Kibou makes progress, Niamh chooses to remain with Sprinkles by the riverbank and TRAWL for anything useful the boys might've missed in their haste. If any FISH were sighted in the process, she'd make a grab with her little paws.

THE SPRING ripples with small, silvery bodies. They seem drawn to the creatures standing in the shallows and Niamh easily plucks them from the water as they swim near, collecting a sack of fresh, wriggling fish as additional snack food for the journey (+10 Resources). 

The fish show little fear—and they just keep coming. Perhaps they have no natural predators in this cave. Or perhaps they hide a secret.

Something dark stirs, serpentine, beneath the surface.

At the same time, something sparkles among the rocks, the silt cleared away by Sprinkles' determined trawling.

SPRINKLES HAS FOUND THE QUICK ORB
  • Using this orb will double all team members' movement speed (number of actions) within the same area for one posting cycle.
  • +5 Resources have been gained from EATING JOLTIK.

As Lil' Busters bob above and below the surface, they see the disorganized school of fish begin to change, their tiny bodies working together in tandem to form a long, sinuous shape. 

Needless to say, the team hurries up to cross the spring, no time for further dabbling in its depths. Who knows what would have happened once the fish finished their formation? (+5 to All Players from Scout)

Ascending back into the light, Michiko's Pantry Raiders, led by speedy jar-bearer Kibou, find the sky now clouded over  in the canyon. Thunder rumbles distantly, warning of distant rain. You feel it in the ground, in the jitter of small pebbles, in the distant thud-thud-thud of footsteps.

Your close call at the spring has danger fresh on your minds. A roar fills your ears and two huge, clawed feet thunder down almost on top of you, cracking the red stone with a sound like a shotgun blast. A RAMPARDOS vaults from a high cliff ledge, its tail sweeping out in an arc of bludgeoning force.

"RUUUOGGHGHHAAGGHHHH!"

All Pokemon take the following damage (-5):

RAMPARDOS ATTACKS! WHAT DO YOU DO?

  • BATTLE: Enter combat and inflict damage equal to your roll. You will automatically take -10 HP from making a Battle roll. Assume your opponent fights back IC.
  • HIDE: Roll Stealth and try to hide somewhere on the same floor to escape further attacks. If you roll beneath your opponent, your Stealth will fail.
  • ESCAPE: Progress as a group, attempting to escape into the next floor. You will lose 50 group resources.

"Thank you!" Hopping off the Lil' Buster that she was no doubt drowning, Sprinkles could proudly say that she came out of this scenario without a drop of water on her fur. Sad that her pretty bow was all soaked now. She could probably pawn that out on someone else, though.

"Oops!" She's trying to fold it back up when the ground shakes, making her drop the two pretty orbs she found while they were walking. The Inviting Orb and Quick Orb are both broken, both giving out a nice glow that covers the whole team. Sprinkles find she feels faster! And more lovable! Weird!

"Aw, I wanted to take those- oh!" The Rampardos appears, knocking her down and giving her a little bruise. The nerve of this guy! Sprinkles, the Valiant and Brave and Beautiful Skitty who beat up Tapu Bulu (totally legitimately, don't ask too many questions) is NOT going to let this go down!

"Come here you assing puck!" She had learned those swear words from her Trainer and was sure she was using them right! Charging, Sprinkles was ready to Wake Up Slap the crap out of this guy.

Suddenly a beast dropped from the sky!

A foul, bumpy, stamping, rock-eyed old fossil that was bloody likely to smash their precious jar!

Sprinkles launched into action, slapping the clods out of the old dinosaur. Kibou found himself passing the jar to one of the Falinx, and attacking with everything.

Creamy, crescent scales slashed through the air like wet croissants, weakening Rampardos's resolve.

Kibou squidged in fast, closing the distance and savaging the monster's ankles with his venomous bite. "Mffamar ffhanmf mm fmomr!" he shouted, mouth full of dinosaur. 

But Kibou wasn't done there. He spat out the grimy leg of the stomping asshole, and battered the creature's knees with his deep, surging strikes from his full-grown wings. Pale feathers were strewn across the battleground, knocked loose by the wild blows.

In a final act of bravery, Kibou put himself right in harm's way: underneath the creature's worn and leathery feet. Kibou drilled downwards, digging a deep, ankle-snapping pit that would topple the bastard once and for all!

"RUUUOGGHGHHAAGGHHHH, yourself!"

Honestly, how rude of this giant fossil to jump down here, yell at them, and nearly stomp them flat. Niamh recognizes Rampardos as one of the Pokemon her trainer collects but feels no more fondness toward it as a result.

She's already baring her teeth and readying her fists when the two Normal-types leap into action and kick the living shit out of it.

"Hm. Well done. Oi, rockface, over here!"

Her metal claws flash in the sun as she leaps up to score them across its wide, rocky nose. Running up its snout, she uses its back like a slide to launch herself from its tail in the hopes of making some progress should the brute crumble under their offensive power.

they were not going to have some old fossil stop their way and it seemed like the team was on the same page as everyone but the falinks was ready to jump the little dinosaur. leaving the commanding falinks alone with the jar as the squadron of little warriors bundled together around the jar as they sneaked around the battle to try and get themselves out of trouble.

"beat him good comrades! show no fear!" while they could join in on the fight protecting the jar was a bit more important and they needed to hurry along so they could reach their destination right on time. however they would take this opportunity to try and search around for not only a way around the battle but for anything they could use in case the results go south for them. could never be too careful with opportunities like this.
