THE GARDEN

RAMPARDOS FIGHTS BACK. But the dino is no match for the lightning-quickness of the Orb-boosted Pantry Raiders, and it has certainly underestimated the group of weak-looking Pokemon it jumped into. Retribution is swift, and the giant is toppled in literal seconds. 

Niamh's claws tear a scrap of cloth free from the ancient Pokemon's spikes as she delivers the final blow. Its cheeks swollen from Wake-Up Slaps and nose dripping blood from Metal Claw, Rampardos can hardly take a step before Kibou's pit trap opens up beneath its feet.

It hits the ground with a thunderous crash. 

"UGHHH..." It moans and groans. Somehow, sense comes out of it.

"You beat me..."

A bubble of blood pops in its nostril. Its eyes cloud with a strange glow, entranced by the power of the Orb.

"Let me join you."

RAMPARDOS consumes 10 resources.
RAMPARDOS heals the following amount:

NIAMH receives the DETECT BAND as loot!
  • Boosts user's evasion. While wearing this band, the user's Battle rolls will only negate the user by -5 HP. Ongoing effect.


With your new, carnivorous pack mule in tow, you're able to catch up with Lil' Busters and Niamh at the edge of the treeline. Thickets of prickly pear and juniper have been steadily encroaching along the cliff walls and they form a wall of tough greenery, blocking the way forward.

Thump, thump, thump. It proves no problem for Rampardos to crash through the barrier, opening a makeshift doorway for its new "friends."

Inside, a plethora of desert plants cluster in the shade of cedar and sequoia trees, forming a lush (albeit deadly) garden of thorns and brightly-colored blossoms.

Some of the cactus appear to be fruiting. Juicy-looking purple fruits dangle just out of reach, crowned by handfuls of brutally sharp cactus spines. Is it worth it? Eating them might supplement your current Resources, but you know what they say about cactus juice...

Lil' Busters' careful patrolling of the border has turned up something... strange. A CAIRN of round stones stands near the path, overgrown with brambles. It seems to be a traveler's shrine. Small trinkets and coins are stacked in small piles which mimic the balancing stones, as well as little offerings of flowers gone to seed.

LIL' BUSTERS has found a BLAST SEED
  • Spends 1 Resource. Eat this seed to blast your opponent with your explosive breath! Substitute a 100 for your next Battle roll.

If the Pantry Raiders venture deeper into this desert garden, they'll find three more of these cairns scattered throughout the area. There seems to be some kind of mechanism built into them.

Their function, and their purpose, is unknown.

HOW WILL YOUR GARDEN GROW?

  • The cairn mechanism will activate with any Search roll over 70. If you fall short, you may choose to spend 5 group resources (representing time/effort) to re-roll.
  • This floor is more extensive than the others, so it may be a good time to Recover some HP after your battle! 
  • You may also spend your rolls to further heal Rampardos or one another.

To the victor go the spoils: a cool new headband for Niamh and a giant, galumphing, dung-breathed friend! "Thanks for holding the jar," he said to Falinx. "Sometimes you just have to get your wings dirty, you know?" 

Kibou looked up at their new teammate, who stared back with the glazed eyes of a lost Psyduck. Rampardos cocked its head to the side, and he could almost hear the creature's brain clattering around inside its skull like loose gravel. 

"I'm going to go and scout," Kibou said, and he flopped on ahead, surveying the succulent landscape with his thin, squinted eyes. There was much to see, he assumed.

Having thoroughly looked at things, he rested in the shade of one of the cairns. Soon after, the party joined him. Their new dinosaur pal brought up the rear, presumably all tuckered out from headbutting cacti and eating dirt.

as the group managed to make it into the next room they were met with a very unusual sight. a small little carin that seemed to have been set up before the party could make it here, meaning that this place had visitors before. how long ago that was was still a mystery. for now it seemed like they were out of danger and could very well spend this time to take a quick rest, of course one didn't just sit down without precaution, even kibou knew that much by his actions.

"busters! split up! search the area and tend to our new ally! on the double!" the troop split up, two of them going off to search the surrounding area for anything they could use to help on their journey while the rest of them turned to their new dinosaur buddy and dug through one of the party's bags to take out some berries and a potion meant for healing. "show us where it hurts private rampardos! no soldier of ours will go walking around on even a limp! all troops must be in tip top shape in order to bring their best performance to the team!"

"Oh! We won!" Sprinkles sounded just as surprised as anyone else when the Rampardos fell. She gave a big stretch, now pretty sore from all the slapping she had done. When the Rampardos decided to come with them, she gave a little cheer, scrambling over to try and hitch a ride on it's back. Even for the tree crashing bit. Any walking she didn't have to do herself was energy saved!

"Hey guys, if you see anymore bugs, will you let me know?" She was still kind of peckish. Kibou and the Lil' Busters seemed to have it handled making sure they were safe, plus she had a cool dinosaur to throw under the bus if she needed to run, so when the Rampardos was helped out, Sprinkles decided to help herself out. Mostly in involved munching on a few berries and grooming her fur.

"Do you guys want some fruit?" She called out, again, having just noticed the weird purple fruits. Feeling a little better, she hopped up to see if she could collect some. Sadly, she suffered from the same curse as Kibou and Brock, her slit eyes obscuring much of the world from her... would the thorns claim some of her soft and delicate fur?!

Launching off the dinosaur's tail like it's a glorified slide, Niamh whoops gleefully and spins her newly acquired detect band around her paw as she sails toward the treeline. Her landing isn't graceful but she's quick to recover, stumbling against a tree before righting herself and taking a better look at the headband.

"This seems quite fetching."

She puts it on, careful to secure it in a way that doesn't pinch her sensitive ears.

By that point, the others have caught up to the Riolu and Lil' Busters, their prehistoric companion crashing brutishly through the trees and making quick work of whatever obstruction might've hindered them.

"He does look a little battered, doesn't he? Oops."

She doesn't seem sorry at all, but she does at least assist the Busters in healing their new pack mule.

Her focus turns to the cairns after they're done, mosying over to search among one not yet inspected by her companions.

THE MECHANISM

AS KIBOU WIGGLES ALONG, the tough-talking pink Dunsparce begins to feel something strange beneath his scaly belly. The ground becomes bumpy, sloping down and down like layers of stacked fungi. The rings of cacti and desert shrubbery have disguised weathered, eroded stair-steps carved by ancient humans.

With his squinty snake-eyes, Kibou can pick out the true nature of this natural garden: a set of sloping terraces, remnants of ancient agriculture lost to time. Choked with dirt and age, small rivets and canals run along the length of each terrace. Once, perhaps, they brought water and irrigation to fields of crops.

...But from where? The underground river where you trawled for hidden wonders seems a long way away.

Lil Busters uses the power of numbers to uncover the remaining three cairns, finding each one roughly the same distance from one another. While their efforts at tracking the four down are unparalleled, actually invoking the mechanism takes a more dexterous set of paws.

Rampardos chuffs in the background, grateful for the first aid from its new friends, as Niamh works on the second stone cairn. The Riolu's paws run gently around the piled stones, sorting through the bits of coin and seed piled up around it. There is an engraving in the pedestal—an palm-sized circle etched with rays. It's just the right size to be pressed.

Something clicks.

The gathering storm clouds overhead part as a beam of light lances the heavens from the stone cairn, piercing the gray veil. An eye of sunlight appears, broadening rapidly until only clear blue skies remain.

With it comes harsh sunlight. The stone and sand beneath your feet begins to heat like a cast-iron pan, becoming uncomfortably hot underfoot. You may find yourselves retreating to the shade of Rampardos' belly for safety as the sun burns ruthlessly overhead.

"...Do you guys want some fruit?" the cactus-braving Sprinkles asks, returning from her conquest without a scratch and with a cluster of juicy-looking purple cactus fruit filling her jaws. 

Teeth pricking their outer flesh, the sweet taste seeps into her senses.

SPRINKLES has consumed CACTUS FRUIT x1
  • Choose one ally. Sprinkles' feelings for this Pokemon feel curiously enhanced. Very enhanced. Could this be... love?
  • Sprinkles will gain a +10 to Battle rolls while fighting beside this ally and will feel compelled to take damage for them in combat.
  • This effect will wear off in two posting cycles. 1 fruit remains.

IT DEPENDS ON THE WEATHER...

  • You have activated the SUNNY cairn. As the temperature rises, it may be difficult to stay here for much longer—but with the storm dispelled, how will you catch any lightning?
  • More cairns may be activated (Search 70+) and more cactus fruit may be collected/consumed (Battle 50). 
  • Don't forget to add your +5 bonus from Kibou's Scout!

it seemed like their efforts triggered...something. above the skies started to clear and let sunlight pour into all around them. while it was nice feeling its warmth it also meant that their mission was in jeopardy as the storm was starting if not outright stopping, so they needed to pick up the pace.

"alright men! let's try this again! search around the carins themselves a second or third time! leave no stone unturned!" with a salute (as much as they could salute) the falinks spread out once again to inspect the remaining carins as well as the surrounding area to see if they could find something, anything, to help them out. time was of the essence.

"Hoo-waaaaaayh!" Sprinkles sputtered out around the fruit. She hadn't gotten ripped to shreds! Success! The juice was sweet and delicious where her teeth pricked into it. While her original intention was to share, she couldn't resist chomping down and devouring the fruit herself. Oh well! She could always try and get more!

The sudden heat is what gets her down, though, and before too many adverse effects happen, she shakes a tail to make it under the Rampardos and hide. "Hey Kibou!" She calls from her hiding spot, peeking out. "Why'd it get so hot?" Even if the rain was wet she was much happier with that!

Looking around to find something to do, she perks up when she sees Niamh. But it's not a normal feeling... she feels...

Possessive! Foolish Murk! Cats don't feel love! They only know cruelty and how to get good chin scratches from silly humans!

Still, Sprinkles has made the very sudden and totally-not-cactus-fruit-aided choice that Niamh will be hers. Of course, she is not a savage, so this means she will need to do Traditional Skitty Courtship like trials by combat. For now, she settles on trying to gain the Riolu's attention in other ways. Then they can battle for who gets to be the little spoon.

"I'll solve everything! Niamh, look!" Sprinkles proclaims, charging from her spot, and Searching diligently. She doesn't know what she's looking for but she'll sure find it if she tries!

"Hahahahaha! Oh Sparkles, we Dunsparce don't care about a little sunlight," Kibou said, laughing heroically as his eyes streamed with sandy tears. "My spawner used to say that we Dunsparce only live underground because the sun fears our true strength!" He laughed again, louder this time and turned to see why Sparkles wasn't saying 'Wow!'.

In a display of stunning good sense, Sparkles had already left. Kibou searched around for his teammates, and noticed a splotch of pink and a smear of blue huddled around a big blob of grey and brown. 

"That's right, too strong, if you can believe that," Kibou repeated, shuffling his way over to what he assumed were Sparkles and Niamh. "Why, if we chose to live outside then the sun would be too terrified to rise each morning!" 

With a powerful chuckle, the sweating Kibou ran straight into the pile of stones.

"... Whoops."

Niamh is once again unapologetic in tone as her fiddling with the cairns turns the weather into harsh sunlight. If anything, she feels most sorry for herself; the heat is overwhelming, and she finds herself taking shelter beneath Rampardos' shadow.

It's a good place to recover from her earlier scrap, her wounds beginning to smart now that adrenaline is dying down.

"Niamh, look!"

"What am I looking at?"

Reluctant to stray far from the comfortable shade, Niamh does attempt to aid Sprinkles in her search.
