Lava me some Science [HEATRAN]

"I'm good! I'm good!" Zac prattled, hot-stepping it past Eva on the way down the mountain. Sizzling rock pelted him like hellish rain, and he fumbled with the balls in his bag, grabbing for someone to help as he slid and skidded down the crumbling mountainside.

"Clear the way!" he shouted, grabbing out a Pokeball that he hoped was Kev and tossing it down the mountainside. The capsule burst, and instead of the iron serpent there was a terrifying mash-mash of prehistoric parts as the Dracozolt materialized on the shifting scree. "Uh, clear the way!" Zac shouted again, and the Dracozolt gave a worried chirp as it stomped forward, smashing through ferns and scrub as the group forced their way downward.

Behind them, the mountain rocked as another quake hit. The East side of the mountain exploded, sending a tumbling avalanche of stone and magma pouring down towards the village by the bay. Zac's eyes went wide, and he cut a hard left, stumbling as he ran out of their safe path and towards the disaster. "You keep going! I've got to stop that magma!" he shouted.

DING! "Whoa!" Zac exclaimed, as his phone dinged with the default text alert. The Zarude pulled back, startled by the cool sound. "Come back girl, nothing to be-" DING! A second alert pulled Zac's attention back to the brick in his pocket. "Twice in one day?" he said, grinning. That think-piece in Archeologists Annual must have finally been published. DING! DING! DING!

Zac grabbed out his phone, tapping his foot while the messaging app loaded. He paled when he saw the contents. Five messages from Chryssa, complete with little X in a box emojis, and a blank image. "Doug! Chryssa's in trouble!" he said, quickly composing a reply.

Dear Chryssa,
Thank you for your messages, and for thinking of my in such a stressful situation. It is great to hear from you! How are your parents doing?

The vines are healthy, however they have not grown further since your assistance some weeks ago.

Sorry to hear that you are being tortured. I will organize a rescue right away. Looking forward to seeing you soon!

Zac tossed out the Pokeball, and a large, hulking creature formed in the shadowed underside of the vines. Its shape was easy to make out: a giant monkey. "Mate, is that one of them?" Zac asked, his smile growing.

"This is gonna solve a bunch of problems. Thanks a ton!" Zac asked, squatting as he approached the Pokemon, hands out so that it could sniff him. He didn't make direct eye contact either, instead looking around the nearby vines. If this Zarude was anything like the other monkey Pokemon it would be shy, but quick to build friendship. They were great partners usually, if a little skittish. "Where'd you get her?

"Thanks mate!" Zac said, his smile growing. Ki was a true friend, with a heart as big as one of his fake boobs. "I didn't bring you anything, but the food and tea are on me, okay? It's the least I can do!"

Zac patted the balled Heatran. "Great timing, actually. I've been looking for another of these little guys. I've got some work to do and this'll speed it up a ton."

Buggle's cold eyes narrowed, and one lip raised in a building hiss. Static grew in the room, and Zac felt sparks dancing up his hairy arms. "Hey! Cut it out Buggle!" Zac said, turning to reprimand the cat. "Either play nice or you're going back inside, okay?"

Buggle hissed at Zac, who pulled out the second-hand Pokeball and returned the Zeraora. "Bad temper on that one, but he'll come around. How do you discipline cats? I didn't see any tips in the notes I made."

"We've got a Leaning Tower of Cheese-a, and a Cold Cotton Candy coming up!" Zac called, reading off the little slip of paper that Branes had just handed to him.

As he started on the EISCUE CAPRESE SALAD, Tapu Bulu pushed into the kitchen, and Zac's salad prep station exploded with life. Tomatoes bulged like rindless watermelons, the heads of lettuce swelled to the size of Zac's own head, and the bushel of basil exploded to consume half of the kitchen. "Get out!" Zac yelled, a reprimand to Bulu and a warning to everyone else. He shoved and wrestled the legendary away from the stand, leaving them free to finish the order.

"Got a 3-bean soup, extra bubbles, and a sweet-and-spicy sub with extra moo-moo-mayonaise!" Zac called to the kitchen. He had his hands full growing fresh berries for the sandwich, and the little stall was abuzz with calls and chatter.

Zac was again surrounded by Rocket members. Were they just better in the kitchen? More playful by nature? Was it a clear demonstration of that old adage about opposites attracting? Probably, and the dream team of Good Guy Zac and Bad Boys Ki, Priam, and Oscar were cooking up a storm.

Pyroar and Tirtouga got to work on the latte, roasting the beans and boiling the water, before adding the squirt of vanilla and the soy milk. Tirtouga slid the drink over to Drifblim for the finishing touches.

"Mate what's with all the gifts!" Zac asked, beaming. "You're not dying, are you? I mean, faster. I thought you were looking a bit better...I can heal you again if you want?" He pulled out an empty plastic container and brushed off more of the dirt, saving it for later as Ki had suggested. "Magic soil, magic vines, magic growing powers. Mate, if these things don't heal people it'll be a bloody miracle!" He tapped the pink Pokeball, not wanting to blindly send out another Pokemon into the packed room. "What's in this one?"

In the corner, Buggle eyed the other Zeraora suspiciously. His whiskers flicked, curious, but reserved. This cat had been cursed by curiosity a few too many times.

Zac couldn't take his eyes off their find. Was it amber? It was certainly the right color, but it didn't look like a big glob of sap. Instead it looked like a crystalline shard. Just what was it? "I think taking it to a scientist is a great idea." They searched the tunnel a bit longer, but there was only the single piece to be found.

They returned to the captured Rockets, who were munching on snacks under Yucca's merciless glare. "We got your thing working, so you've earned a bit of leniency," Zac said, though he made no move to undo the ropes. He knelt down next to them. "I'm enrolling you both in the Fallarbor Rangers. You need to learn respect for these caves, and they'll have you out here doing geological sampling and cleanup. Sound good?" The boy was silent, his eyes far away. The woman swore at him. "Well it's that or jail, so make up your mind before we get into town. Let's head back guys!"

"Yeah I'll give it a shot," Zac said, dusting himself off as he walked over to the wall. His brow furrowed as he started to read, the letters slowly forming words and sentences.

"The honor of our people fades, eaten by the sand," Zac said, the words coming faster as he got used to the strange symbols. "When the titans have woken thrice, and the sky warns of its falling, false gods of water will rise to drown the lamp," he squinted, trying to figure out the letters, "lane? lamb? Oh land! Drown the land. Anyway, where was I," he reread the last few words again, taking a second to get back into the rhythm of the oversized symbols.

"Under their rule, we will rise, and strike them down with the words they use to bind us. When the last chosen falls, we will regain our honor, and the favor of this land." Zac made a high sound of interest, and turned to Kaz. "What do you reckon all that means?"

"Well I don't have a Zarude," Zac said. "A few of them got caught after the Fortree Expedition, but most of them went to Rangers from those parts." He tossed the sample to Doug. There was more than enough to go around, and it was probably inert anyway.

"By the time I thought about it, it was too late. They'd all been snapped up!" Something huffed from the shadows nearby, and there was a gleam of hunter's eyes, filled with cold lightning. "Oh yeah! I did get a cat though. Ki's been telling me I should get one to keep myself humble." He watched Doug clench and unclench his fists. "You alright mate? Something on your mind?"

The lights dropped out, leaving them in blackness. Zac resisted the urge to throw out a few of his Minior to light the place up. He was no stranger to dark caves, tunnels, or mountains, but normally he had some backing light to help him move around. "Yeah! Been the gym leader in Lavaridge for a few months now. Looking forward to working with you, mate!" He said, his voice sounding strange in the darkness.

There was something about the way that your mind couldn't predict the echoes from an unknown place. It was disorienting. But that was fine, because Zac wasn't the one who would have to navigate in the darkness.

He stuck his fingers in his mouth and whistled. Outside, mist rolled in, smothering the sky in dark haze and pressing in on the dim gym. Inside, Zac could feel the brush of cool clouds against his legs and arms. While the vapor was hidden in the darkness, he knew that it was thickening, moment to moment. Then, an eye.

A single, will-o-wisp eye, floating in the darkness. "Burdock," Zac said, almost absently. The eye turned to him, as much as a single light could. "Yeah! This is Burdock. We met up on Mt Pyre," Zac explained. "He ate some carrots of mine, and a whole sleeve of Oreos."

Light slipped from Zac's pocket, forming into a lumpy, grounded shape before darkness claimed them again. Kibou was born and raised in the dark. He was a cave denizen, through and through, and was ready for action. "And this is Kibou! He was born in the dark but dreams of the stars. He loves flying, he's been to Ultra Space, and regular space, and he's held his own against legendaries a few times too! Cute as hell, to boot!" Zac said, not minding the fact that he couldn't back up that claim visually.

"Controlled sleep," Zac said, spitting a little to get the said out of his mouth. "Mate that sounds like exactly what I need. Tell you what, once we're done here let's head back to one of your secret bases and we can give it a shot!" As Zac said that, Domon heaved away a particularly large chunk of rock and the redhead was sucked into a growing hole in the sand.

"Whooooa!" he shouted, as the sand pulled him down. He slid straight into the void, disappearing into sandy darkness. He tumbled, landed on a hill of dusty sand, and rolled down to land on hard, reliable stone. "Not a bad fall," Zac conceded, rubbing his arms as he sat up. Desert light streamed down from above, illuminating him like a spotlight, and a pair of Minior soared down, they blue brilliance bursting in the shadows.

Around Zac lay the weathered remains of an ancient temple. Familiar, alphabetical runes rose from the surfaces, their black and white paint faded with age or hidden with ancient dust. "Well no prizes for guessing what Pokemon that is."

"Legendaries can be fickle and mysterious," Zac said, shrugging. "After the Vital Spirit festival Bulu used to disappear for long stretches too. Probably just healing." He frowned, thinking about the timeline. "What's it been though, two months?"

As Zac puzzled over the disappearance, Doug asked about the vines. "Huh? Oh they're Zarude vines! chryssa glasgow brought back a snippet and I tried to regrow a plant." Zac pointed up at the hole in the ceiling. "Not a ton of luck past the initial burst, and it used up a whole plate." He tore off a piece of vine. It was lush and living, almost preserved at the point of growth, all those weeks ago. "They're supposed to have healing properties, but they didn't work on Ki. Not sure if they healed Chryssa either."
