"Great to meet ya Anna!" Zac said, nodding politely. "Why would I be tired? I'm not the one fighting...usually." It had been a strange day, actually. Zac had been blown up, and tossed around, he'd arm wrestled, swam far out to sea to save a drowning Pokemon, eating a ton of watermelon (twice), and had blinded half of Slateport with the illegal fireworks Stormy had procured for him. Maybe he should be tired.

"I'm running on cola at the moment," Zac said, opening his Rotom fridge and grabbing out two chilled cans of Passho Plus+. He rubbed on can on his scorched neck and offered the other to Anna with an outstretched hand. "You want one?"

Zac vs Adrian [H✩T]

Buzz's faceted eyes danced over her opponent's shell like sunlight on water. Hard, battered steel plates, protecting a rattled core filled with colorful wires and brittle soldering.

There. A chink in the armor. A little gap between the plates. Buzz hummed with adrenaline and pain. She forced her wings to move. To speed. To push through the fizzing electricity that jumbled her signals and made her muscles jump and jerk.

As Magnezone LOCKED ON, Buzz shot towards her metal foe, her AIR SLASH cutting up towards the thin gap in her opponent, and the weakness inside.

Brittaium lost, and Zac started to sweat. "Nice try buddy, that was a good try," he said, patting the metal monster supportively, like a coach consoling a star player who missed an easy kick.

"And next up is..." Zac turned to his last team member. Bulu. The legendary was asleep on the table. "Oh. Yeah. Okay sure, nah, we can do this. Come un Bulu! It's time for a friendly arm wrestle. You're my ace in the hole!"

The legendary didn't move. Zac frowned slightly, and heaved one of the bull's clanging arms up onto the table. The avatar grew a few vines up from the wooden tabletop, holding Bulu's arm in place. It wasn't much, but it would guarantee that the bull didn't lose the match before it starts.

"Uh, ready when you are."

The tickle of recognition in Zac's brain was confirmed as soon as his opponent spoke. "Marverick! Yeah you used to be a gym leaders!" Zac said, grinning like a kid meeting a celebrity. "I used to watch your matches online!"

"Ready? Okay let's start this thing with some excitement! Byron!" Zac shouted, lobbing the Sphealball into the air. Byron the Nidoking stomped into position underneath the ball, and launched a shuddering MEGA PUNCH that sent the Spheal rocketing over the net with an excited 'Fweeeeee!'

Even splitting the power between the contestants, Cofagrigus has to divide its strength between all four arms. And everyone knows that four arms are no match for a single, mighty leg.

"Yes! You beauty!" Zac crowed, grabbing Wanda in a rough hug. "Just one more point. It's time to bring in a ringer."

Next up was Zac's metal mate: Duraladon. The creature had trouble reaching across the table with its powerful, steely arms, but it had the grip strength of a train coupling, and the bone density of a titanium brick. "This one's for the team!" Zac called, helpfully.

Brittanium hunkered down, set phasers to 'arm wrestle', and got ready to win this thing.

Zac vs Noah [H✩T]

No Charja-Cola. No Dr. Pika. Not even a can of Zapsi to empty out and fill with seawater for a salty refresher. "More than sponsored mate, I own the company! I'd offer you a can but they're all warm by now. After the match. My treat!" Zac said, grinning at Noah.

Gym leaders were always teaching, whether they were in their gym or not. Zac knew that there was a lot to learn from facing down such an experienced opponent. Namely, Noah's unique Educational Objective.

"Close quarters combat. No backing down," Zac said softly, repeating his mantra for the match. "Okay Don! Go for his weak spot!" Zac shouted, and the Charjabug wriggled across the sizzling sands. It crouched down, preparing to leap up and bite at Machamp's nose, but at the last second Don launched himself sideways and behind his opponent, aiming for the ankles in a vicious Skitter Smack!

Charjabug used Skitter Smack for a sneaky ankle attack!

Soul guiding, head crushing, early graves, it was all good quality banter. Zac laughed and smiled, and let out a cheer as Clambert managed to win the arm wrestle....against a ghost.

"Hell yeah! Two to one, and I've got a red-hot contender comin' up next!" Wanda the Blaziken puffed out her chest and adjusted her slick, powerful crest. Up next for Pryde was another ghost. Blaziken curled and uncurled her claws, sizing up her opponent. Could her forearms beat her enemy's four arms? Maybe not. But she had something that the creepy coffin didn't have.

Legs.

Taking a page out of Hitmonlee's book, Wanda struck upwards with a BLAZE KICK, burning a hole through the table and right into the history books.

Reuniclus's psychic wrestle knocked Nidoking bakwards and onto the sand. The brawler lay there for a few seconds, dazed, before harrumphing and sitting back up. Byron glared at his jelly opponent. He had been bested, and he was furious.

Next up was Clambert, the Druddigon. The red-faced menace took to the table with iron claws and ferocious, slavering fangs. He wasn't here for revenge, or glory. He was here to be a goddamn pest and to get some blood on the sand. "Hey! That's enough of that!" Zac said, noticing the look in the dragon's eyes, and the way he was breathing hard already. "We're here for a friendly game, okay?"

Zac wiped his forehead with a Lars and Articuno sweatband. Why were so many of his Pokemon bad sports? Was it because he had brought all his most jock-y Pokemon to the sport that was all about upper-body strength? Probably.

"I wanna see a nice, clean game, yeah? Or else I'm sending you to anger management again!" he warned. Clambert looked unconvinced, but mollified. With a grumble, he clasped hands with Dusknoir and dug in his claws (just a little bit).

Zac tossed Matias a Passho Plus+ and laughed. "The taste isn't for everyone, what with all the dog hair in it." Zac clinked his can against Matias' in a lighthearted toast. "To Summer, ay? May we have plenty more, and little to worry about."

Samu greedily dug into the egg. In two bites it was already mostly gone. She used ENCORE, encouraging Blissey to pump out more of the delicious treats.

Skyler's powerful scream shocked Zac to wakefulness, like a bucket of cold sea water tossed on his eardrums. "Bwah! Ah shit! Sky I'm sorry I didn't mean to!"

Zac looks up in time to see the second DRACO METEOR collide with the first. The air is full of crunching, searing smoke, which rained down like chunks of ragnarok.

Zac saw the svelte, eyepatched figure of fluffy Captain Dross turn away from the destruction. She's paralyzed with terror! I've gotta save her! Zac though, and he pointed to Tempi the Poliwrath. "C'mere mate! Use those big HELPING HANDS!"

Tempi grabbed Zac, wrapping both gloved hands around the heroic gym leader. "All aboard the Skylar Express!" Zac shouted, as Poliwrath hurled him up and over the net!

Zac shot through the cloud of destruction, unknowingly passing the Togedemaru going the other way, and soared down out of the broken sky to tackle 'Fluffy Captain Dross' to the sands like the world's most dedicated bodyguard.

"Captain Dross! Get down!"

Zac picked up Togedemaru
Zac and Kobe successfully served the ball (barely)

"I've never had a chance to visit Unova," Zac admitted. "Always wanted to. Anywhere you'd recommend?" He watched the dragon pump itself up with a beautiful, choreographed dance. Zac whistled, impressed at the Dragonite's aerial prowess. "Good in the air, isn't he!" Zac said. The energized dragon whipped up a whirling hurricane that tore at the arena. It battered Bulu, pulled at Zac's summer clothes, and ripped up the greenery that had formed Bulu's little refuge.

As the fronds and grass were scattered to the winds, Bulu opened its eyes. It snorted, pulling itself up onto its bell-shaped torso. "Uh-oh mate. Bulu's a bit touchy about that foliage," Zac said, taking a few steps back.

Bulu snorted, turning through the winds to lock eyes with Dragonite. The Guardian of Alola (and apparently Hoenn) clanged over to the treeline, where it tore up a coastal pine with one of its bell hands. "MOOOOOOOOOOOO!" it roared, as it hurled the tree at the flying Dragonite.

"You look like the soccer type," Zac said, nodding and sipping his own drink. "What position did you play?"

Zac pointed out a row of faded puncture scars on his leg. "Arcanine mistook my calf for a rugby ball," he explained, turning around to show Gavin the matching set on the other side. "I was out for a few months recovering, and by the time I was fighting fit again I'd missed the playoffs." He shrugged. "I got to spend a lot of time watching though."

Metagross's return was countered by a CRABHAMMER from Kingler. As before, the powerful strike was dampened by Spheal's blubbery form, and the ball flew back over the net with a satisfying PONK!

Summer Battle Solstice 06 (H✩T)

Zac wasn't a battler. He had always been more interested in watching and documenting Pokemon than optimizing battle strategies and training them to fight better. Still, it was the grim reality of Hoenn that the region needed battlers.

Sure, there would always be a place for professors and scientists, but when it came down to alien invasions or rampaging legendaries, what the League needed was people who knew how to battle.

that's why he had become a Gym Leader. Not due to some innate battling ability or hard-won instincts, but in spite of them. To develop those necessary skills that he so desperately needed.

The Hoenn Star Tournament had been great so far! Incredibly fun, exciting, and he had lost almost every battle! What was his score, 3:20 or something equally one-sided? Still, every battle was another step closer to being useful when it came to crunch.

Zac approached a lone battler waiting in one of the arenas. As had been the case a dozen times today, it was a familiar face. "Hey Sénon! How's it going mate?" Zac asked, offering a massive hand to shake with the fellow redhead.
