04. EXCURSION: TRICK HOUSE

    Zac read over the newspaper clipping one more time.
    "TRICK HOUSE TREAT!" read the title. The article had caught his eye last month. A team of four skilled puzzle solvers had tested their wits against the infamous Trick House and had come out on top. Not just that, but they had won the grand prize! What was the prize? The article didn't say, and that fact alone was enough to drive Zac wild. A mysterious prize they only give out to the best puzzle solvers? It could be anything. gold, a rare Pokemon, we might even get a trophy commemorating our teamwork! The sky's the limit! With glory on his mind, Zac had gone ahead and assembled his own super team of whoever had been free on that Sunday: @sumi and . 
    Thankfully for Zac there were plenty of new rangers who didn't know that his idea of a relaxing weekend was reading articles in biology journals or helping someone move house. 
    "What's taking everyone so long?" Zac wondered out loud. He took a deep drink from his Charja-Cola and checked his watch again. "It's almost seven! The place opens at half past nine so if they don't get here soon we won't have time for our pre-warmup jog and protein bars!"
    Zac pulled out his brand new 2008 flip phone and sent an email to Kazimir.

To Kazimir,

Hope you are well this morning.
I am waiting outside the Trick House, as previously discussed. GPS coordinates are 32°43'59.99" N 129°51'59.99" E

    The black bull looked over at Zac. It lay in a patch of sunlit grass, eyes slowly closing. "Oi! We've gotta sort this out mate. No napping. Wake up!" Zac said, walking over to stand in front of Tapu Bulu. Zac was almost 7 feet of cola-charged frustration, and he completely blocked the sunbeam that Bulu had been lying in. The legendary looked up at Zac and snorted. "I can't work like this. I'm falling asleep on missions, and now the house is bloody ruined! How am I supposed to get anything done when I'm snoozing in sunbeams all day!"
    Bulu closed its eyes.
"Hey! This isn't a one-man band mate. Do something!"
    There was a great creaking, cracking of wood and Zac turned to see two great pine trees bend out of the way to reveal a thick slice of sunlight. The beam lit Zac from behind like a spotlight. "It's gonna take a bit more than dramatic lighting, mate." 
    Bulu lazily shook one of his belled hands, filling the air with a single, sonorous chime. The ground swelled underneath Tapu Bulu, throbbing and surging with dense greenery. The pile of grasses and woody vines that he had been lying on wound together, pushing Bulu's reclining form upwards. Up, up, out of Zac's shadow so that the legendary was once again bathed in rich Spring sunlight. Tapu Bulu let out a long, slow breath, before drawing in a rattling snore, as if he was already asleep.
    "You can't be bloody serious mate," Zac said, shaking his head. Bulu made no effort to reply, and after a minute of watching the sleeping legendary and planning his next move, Zac headed back to the house. 
    "More like Tapu Bullsh-"

    "Normal? Hell if I know mate!" Zac said with a laugh. "And I haven't noticed anything else. Not yet at least." It had been a wild few months, and the effects of his bond with Bulu were still changing. They shifted in strength from day to day. Some days he was perky and hardly noticed the ever-growing carpet of greenery, and other days he just wanted to find the nearest sunny spot and have a nice long- Zac yawned, long and loud. 
    "Sorry about that mate, but I think I've gotta head off. If I were you I'd check in with the other avatars.  Stormy, Lars, Fernando. Those are the oldest ones right? If anyone knows something it's them."

    Zac's carefree demeanor faded as Razz told his story. "An avatar was killed?!" Zac asked, suddenly worried about his friends. Is Stormy okay? Are the other AQUA members alive? Worry welled up in Zac, as he tried to mentally list the other avatars. So many people kept it a secret. He'd never even seen Lars' powers. He'd seen Lars and Katherine recently, and Razz had even mentioned talking to Fernando. What about Kyle and Selena?
    "Which legendary?" Zac asked, mouth catching up to his too-slow mind. "Tell me everything and I'll make sure that the other avatars know. Let me see that symbol again. Can you send this to me?" Too many questions. Too much going on at once. Zac pulled back, stopped, thought about what he'd just heard. This was just like an interview, and he needed to focus in on what was most important.
    "Who was killed?"

    The Golisopod collapsed, and Zac let out a cheer. "Wooo! Nice attack mate!...shocking smackdown..." he repeated, thinking about Kazimir's advice. "Four outta five on my first try is pretty good, but there's no way I'm stopping there!" 
    Zac looked around for more greedy Pokemon to fight, but they'd already driven them all off. "Oh, well, maybe next time." He felt a lump in his pocket. The seed loaf!
There were two buns left, and finally they could enjoy them without being attacked. "Kaz I've got good news," Zac said, leading his friend back over to their abandoned picnic blanket.      Zac felt the weight of the bread in his pocket. There was something special about these last two buns. They had been through so much battle, and snatched from the jaws of dozens of Murkrows, Wimpod and Golisopod. It was a miracle they hadn't been fried by Simba's lightning too!
    He reached in to pull them out of his jacket and felt the words well up in his soul. 
"Battle Buns! Best-friend Bread Breaker!!!" he shouted, the call echoing out across the now still pond. 



    With a grin he handed one of the sunflora seed buns to Kaz and split his own with REM. The Flygon chewed happily, shivering with excitement. "There. How was that?"

    Chu-e's coughing made Zac wince. "Uh, sorry mate. I've never put that much into it before." Even being the conduit for such a burst of healing had been rough. Zac's whole arm was tingling. He couldn't imagine how rough it had been for Chu-e to get the full brunt of it. "It's, uh, life energy. From plants." Zac said. "Just some garden variety healing." He said, smile creeping back onto his lips. And that was it. That was the extent of what Zac had figured out in the months spent experimenting with his power. It healed cosmetic wounds, but nothing more. 
    "Do you feel any better?" Zac asked hopefully. "If it helps, even a little bit, I can be back here every day to hit you again!"

    "Everyone hang tight and practice those calls," Zac shouted as he followed the Minior. The little guy was still drifting from side to side, but something told Zac that it was moving with purpose. "Where are we heading mate?" He asked, but the rock didn't reply, it just floated onwards into the darkening grassland. 
    What's with all the Minior acting weird lately?

        And there is was. Another of Zac's pride and joy. A beautiful, pristine rock from space, just floating, lost through the field. "Minior! And what a little beaut he is too! Such a fantastic shade of red. I think he's a bit darker than normal, actually." 
    Zac broke from the group and approached his treasure, moving through the grass towards the floating orb. It turned, looking at him with vacant eyes. There was always something strange about space Pokemon. They never reacted to trainers like you expected. "Hey buddy, wanna join me?" Zac asked, holding out some specially made starfruit rock cakes. The Minior floated closer, and then drifted past him, heading out into the expanse of the grassland. "I guess I'll follow him and see what's going on..."

   "A league investigation sounds great. I can't wait to read the final report and find out what I missed," Zac said, letting out a short laugh. He watched as the lights approached, winding up the unsealed roads of rural Fallarbor. "No arguments about the checkup. I feel ten years older after all that."
    Zac had stopped unconsciously draining the nearby plants a while ago. His healing had 'restored' his body as best it could, and while he was free from burns and scratches, the healing had just further embedded the faux-metal. As the emergency vehicles wound closer, Zac felt the weight grow in his arms and legs. Exhaustion. He'd been blown up twice and was only standing though a combination of willpower and Tapu Bulu's healing. But no amount of green infusion could substitute for rest. Zac's legs started to shake, and he sat down in the rubble.
    “Seeing as I’m involved, I’ll make sure that everyone leaves here compensated. It won’t make up for everything but it’s the least I can do to fix what was lost.”
    "That's good to hear mate." Zac said, nodding slowly. "I wouldn't expect anything less from you. You're one of the good ones."
    Regardless of their difference in method and ideology, Zac and Fernando both wanted the same thing: a better Hoenn.

        The group took note of Zac's technique, and some of them practiced the moves a few times. Within a minute they were back to making Oricorio calls.

An Oricorio, either startled or aroused by the noise, trundled out of the bushes, and there were cries of pleasant surprise as several of the group tossed balls. At it. "Wonderful! Let's keep it up, they normally travel in dancing flocks."

    A gross slug glorped slipperily out of the grass, sliming its way boogishly across the ground. It had a goofy grin on its blubbery pink lips, and Zac fell in love with it instantly. "Now that is one gorgeous little gastropod!" he breathed. "I'll, uh, give you all a quick demo, okay?" Zac said. "Hips aligned, knees bent, head towards the target, wiiiiiind up and POW!" 
    Zac tossed the safari ball at the slippery, slug, catching it uglyly.
