He arrived in a rush, almost as much as his poor author that had to type on the phone.

"Go, Baji!" He said as he released his net ball, his forretress popping into the field besides him.

He had heard the reports before arriving— about the fate of the larvae, and the Rabsca.

He felt strongly for their unfortunate circumstances.

"Faster!" He ordered Baji, the forretress swiftly discarding it's steel carapace, eyes aglow as it accelerated towards its fellow bugs.

Doug popped open a pocket watch, staring at it briefly before nodding at Isaac. "I'll stick around for a bit— just a bit, though. Patients are waiting."

He had arranged for a number of daylong shifts at Oldale General. Wouldn't do to keep the patients waiting long.

His Orbeetle hovered close, settling atop his hat. When the time ran out, it would teleport him away, back to work.

For now...

He reached down and hoisted up two rockets, one on his shoulder, the other under his pit. "Let's get'em vehicle."

"Let's go."

Dear lords, he would be a terrible father. Those puppy eyes were too pure, they were blinding.

Maybe this was how Hideo Kino and Eris Halla kept getting away with their shit.

"Right now, huh?" He echoed, watching her spring back up to her feet. "Well, I don't mind. But first... How's your leg feeling?"

A doctor had to keep his priorities straight, after all.

"Woah, for real? You must be a really smart girl!" He praised with a grin, leaning his head onto his fist whilst squatted. "That'll be useful. Maybe I can teach ya a lil' about medicine, too."

First aid and Pokemon healing were universally useful skills— specially if she was going to run around getting into trouble.

"If you're feeling fine... We can go catch the meanie that hurt you earlier." He said, winking. "I'll teach him a lesson for messing with my student."

"Uh... Haha, yeah, well..." He struggled to find the words. What was he supposed to say? It was a bad look all around. All that came to mind sounded way too unrepentant. Straight up flirtatious.

On a morning like any other, while commuting to Lavaridge General from Mauville, Doug came across a not entirely unusual, yet still curious sight.

"Another swarm, huh?" He observed astutely.

A rather unusual species at that— Sneasel weren't known for their tolerance to heat. It was weird to see them outside of Shoal Cave, let alone this far near a volcano.

Perhaps the mochi strewn about the place had something to do with it. It tended to pop up wherever those weird toxic chains did as well, and it almost never ended well for those involved.

But it was their evolutions that he was far more interested in.

"That's not a Weavile." Doug muttered to himself, palming a pokeball.

Yuina Higashi loved these ancient what'chamacallits, so... maybe he could get a gift for her!

He listened patiently, encouraging her to take as much time as she needed.

Whatever Isaac Merlo thought, his bedside manners were excellent.

"No need to apologize." He said, nodding her way before turning his gaze to the table below.

The phone reached him by way of a trembling hand— the contents displayed on its screen not for the faint of heart.

He did not disclose any opinions, however, gazing in silence at the images before him before raising his gaze to her.

"Let's go to Petalburg general." He said as their waiter came, leaving behind green tea.

Picking it up, he brought it to his lips, taking a sip.

"Based off the images alone, I think I should be able to help." He said. "But even a photo ain't as good as actually seeing what I'm dealin' with my own eyes. I gotta run a few exams of my own as well."

He turned his gaze back at the images once again, impassive, before raising his gaze at her and smiling gently.

"Don't worry— I'm confident I'll be able to help." She said she had tried everything, and he believed her.

His treatment would not be found in any orthodox practice, however.

Both to let his mind wander, and to make sure nothing was coming at them from above— a favorite from arachnid pokemon.

"I can think of several off the top of my head. But if local folk haven't been able to recognize it... I'm guessing it's one of the recent imports."

"Oooh, I've never had the chance to catch a Spidops before!" He said, turning to look at Yuina excitedly—

Doug flicked his lighter shut, watching the fire briefly before turning back towards Isaac.

"What'cha think we should do with these guys?" He asked, gesturing with his neck to the cuffed grunts strewn about the ground, kept down by the threat of possible force. "Cops can get rough with grunts when left alone."

Not everyone was up for the whole 'reform' thing. Some even resented the fact that criminals, specially traitors, were getting the chance.

"SEVENTY-FIVE?" He gawked, mouth wide in outrage. "A WISH SANDWICH?"

Bah! She probably didn't even ask for anything specific! Poor Jirachi probably had to come up with some sort of Platonic ideal of a sandwich on the spot!

Speaking of nonsense, though...

Doug just snorted and laughed, leaning his head onto his fist before smiling at her.

"May I be a sophist for a bit? I'm on break, so... may as well have fun, yah?"

He didn't care one way or another, but he was always willing to argue just to be a dick for argument's sake.

He held up a finger.

"I could argue humans do have moves. Unique abilities, too." He said.

He held up a finger once again, counting.

"We're the only creatures on this sweet earth that sweat the way we do. It makes our stamina recovery greater than any other in the world." He said. "Some say that, before the advent of the pokeball, it was this that allowed us to essentially run down stronger, faster, tougher prey into submission, as well as get the heck outta dodge when things got tough."

It was an ability that many claimed had been key to humanity's survival and development during the eras prior to the pokeball.

Finger number two.

"We have the greatest capacity for synergy, teamwork and communication amongst all species on Earth." Passimians wished they could get done half as much as humans did with half the people and a quarter of the time. Less if pokemon under human instruction became involved.

Finger number three.

"Technology— humans are unique in not just in their intelligence, but in the way their creativity meshes with that intelligence. We ain't the only creatures that create and iterate— but I think it's fair to say at this point that we do it better than anything else. Even though some pokemon trump us in sheer IQ, by a lot in some cases, they can't seem to marshal it for creative purposes to near the same effectiveness as a human with a fraction of their IQ can."

Alakazam and Oranguru came to mind.

"Consider this: If being 'sturdy', or having a powerful stench, or being oblivious can be an ability, why not any of these?"

Even if one assumed an ability needed to be useful in combat (ignoring the many abilities out there that weren't), humans had turned their intelligence into the barrel of a gun, and the edge of a spear before that.

Humans were more than capable than tangling with other pokemon— if not as individuals, then certainly as a species.

"And— We can tackle. We can scratch, and bite. We can punch, kick, headbutt, slam, karate chop, low sweep—" He listed off each one from top of his head, raising a finger for each. "We can use tools to slash or achieve other effects, too. If Farfetch'd and Tinkaton can do it, then our own arbitrary taxonomy should allow for us to do it as well. No?"

A Tinkaton couldn't use Megaton hammer without the aformentioned hammer, and neither Farfetch'd nor Sirfetch'd could slash without their leek, either. Both tools that they could lose and need to replace.

He paused. There was more he could say, but this was just for fun.

"Yer thoughts, Ms. Avenau?" He asked, leaning back on his seat.

It was all he could do to not smile brightly.

Praise from grown men and women oft felt fake, or hollow, or both. A tool, or a formality.

Kids tended to be pretty forthcoming though, so if you were being praised by one, it could generally be trusted... which was what made Lucia's praise so gosh darn effective.

"Gosh... I dunno! It's been so long since I've properly mentored someone." He said, all smiles as he leaned his head onto his fist, gaze up in the sky.

It had been what, 4 years since his brief stint as Hideo Kino's mentor? He had Yuina Higashi, but that wasn't really mentoring— more of a crash course.

He was much busier now than he used to be, as well. The hospitals were never missing patients. But...

"Ah, what the heck. Sure, I'll teach ya a few things!"

He couldn't well say no, could he?

His Flygon darted after him shortly after, wings pulled tight against its back, racing to catch the medic as he dived straight into hell.

She squeaked, and in turn he cracked up and laughed, resisting the urge to pinch her again. To do so much more.

His good sense was coming back to him while she stammered, and he had to try pretty hard to ignore the fact that they were alone, in his home, alone, in his couch, alone, at 3 am, alone—

Ya were an ascetic, dude. Keep yerself in check, jeez.

"A good few hours, looks like." He said, eyes turning to the VHS's clock just so he wouldn't stare at her.

Not that it helped with the fact they were still essentially all over one another.

"Are ya tired?" He asked after a moment of silence, slowly leaning his head against hers. "We can go back to sleep if ya want."

What? The teasing just came out naturally!
