He and Kama, on the other hand? He was wearing his scrubs, and she was clearly on the older side of a Pokemon's age.

Worst yet, they didn't even have a winning record to make up for it.

Kama gave him a dirty look, to which he pet her head.

"Don't worry, kama... we used to look good, too. Once upon a time."

She slapped his hand off, before marching off to take their spot on the battlefield, making him chuckle as he turned his gaze over to... Ana Fell, if he recalled correctly, and nodded.

"Ready as ever!"

Vs Yuina Higashi

"Oh, don't mind my pride, go ahead and hold back all you want." He jested with a laugh, before raising an arm to his face as blinding light exploded from the battlefield.

A moment later, he could only release a whistle at the sight before him, turning his gaze over to Kama. and gulping.

Yup, she was intimidated alright. Even as Kama managed to land the first lucky blow, she leapt back quickly, not too keen to stick close to her opponent in their strange new form.

Tera Forms were a strange, impressive sight.

She hadn't been to a battlefield, real or sports-like in a while; not until the VCT started. All the new stuff was catching her off guard.

Threatened by the new form, she couldn't help but tap into her own strengths, a red aura surging around her as she growled, garnering strength.

"Seems like Kama's gotten scared." He said, crossing his arms thoughtfully as the Scyther leapt back before swinging her now reddish scythe forth, releasing a massive gust of wind towards the Tera'd Daikenki.

What's up, Isaac Merlo.

"Primarily." He said simply. "But it's also for anyone who can benefit from it."

Just so happened that his wish to help a friend would benefit the rest of the world.

It was good to see Isaac just as eager as Doug to break every law of ethics out there.

Nothing like an eager, willing guinea spoink— er, collaborator, to really push forward the field of Medicine.

"We'll get around to that later." He promised the other, before shoving his chest back onto the bed. "For now— let's deputrify your guts."

Not quite what was actually putrid, but he got the gist of it.

Doug nodded to his Orbeetle, who turned his gaze over to Isaac, beginning its hypnosis.

"I'll be opening ya up to take a look around in yer innards for a couple of hours." He said to the other young man... perhaps a little belatedly. "I'll let'cha know how it goes when yer up."

His hand slowly raised, waving at Isaac.

"Nighty night!"

He smiled gently... Before snapping his gaze into an iron scowl.

"Wrong. That's Lieutenant Colonel Sullivan to you, Cadet." He said, voice lowered down to an exaggerated, gravely pitch as he reached behind him and grabbed a hefty bag, before lugging it at Yuina.

Despite the act, he couldn't help the giddy grin on his face as he folded his arms behind his back.

"Now strap that on and start warming up. We're going for a little jog."

He snickered, grabbing his pokeball before lugging it in the air, releasing Kama onto the field.

The Scyther crouched low as she landed, once again beginning her stretching routine as she regarded her opponent. This one didn't seem like an infant, so at least it wouldn't be as humiliating if she lost...

Wait, that was a loser's mindset! Win, win, win!!!

As the Scyther continued to hype herself up, Doug made an innocent shrug.

"Maybe a little." He admitted with a snicker, before patting his Scyther in the back. "Can't say things have been going swell so far... but don't mind that."

He slapped his Scyther in the back, prompting her to roar, filled with fighting spirit.

"Now go have fun, Kama!"

The bug launched forth, swiping at her opponent with the flat of her scythes.

"Lookin' good, ranger!" He said as he arrived at their designated arena, slapping his heel against the cobbled stone beneath him twice before grinning. "Let's try and not make too much of a mess here; this arena seems a little classy."

Read: Old. Seemed like the local grandpa veteran trainers would chew them out if they damaged the place too badly.

"Have you been doing well so far, Ms. Chene?" He asked as he threw out Kama, helping his scyther stretch briefly as he chatted up the pinkette. "Cause I haven't. It's actually been pretty funny."

He could only laugh. Even with the excuse of being there merely to have fun, he felt a little embarrassed with his performance so far.

Things could've been going better. Two losses and zero wins was a wild, unfortunate record for a guy who had once trounced his way through a similar tournament...

"Should I become a try-hard again?" He wondered outloud with a wry smile, scratching at his cheek.

A funny idea, but not a real choice. Kama's age seemed to be catching up to her and she didn't seem like she was about to regain her edge anytime soon.

Maybe if he hadn't fallen behind on the Gimmick weapon's race...

"No, who the heck's got the money for one of those suits anyway?" He sighed, shaking his head as he arrived at his destination: One of the designated street arenas that had been sanctioned for the tournament.

And there was...

"Well then! 'ello there, private!" He saluted crookedly, a cheeky grin on his lips. "Here to get your revenge?"

Vs CIAN MAHER

"Ya did good, Kama." Doug said as he squatted besides his exhausted Scyther, patting her on the shoulder gently. The wounds on her body seemed to dissipate entirely a moment later as he rose to his feet, nodding Cian's way.

They were certainly celebrating hard over there; well, he couldn't fault them for that. He could still remember the rush of winning a pokemon battle, once upon a time.

"I prefer John nowadays." He said with a smile. "But sure; swing by Mauville sometime; I'll take ya out for a drink... Non-alcoholic, though."

It wasn't a great start for the tourney; he was there to have fun, sure, but he doubted Kama would enjoy herself much if she didn't get a few wins herself, she was prideful like that.

Hopefully they would pick up a few wins before the end of the month.

"I know, right? You would think it came with the territory, but I guess they don't need it!" Though now that they had it, they were certainly going to abuse it.

That aside... It went without saying, but they were getting their ass handed to them pretty bad.

"It's like they can see into the future or something..." Doug said eerily, scratching at his cheek as Kama continued to get battered around.

It didn't seem like the fight would last much longer at this rate.

Kama seemed to think so too— and fuck having fun, she liked to win.

A red aura enveloped her as she stumbled back from the latest blow, the bug type leaping back and couching low as strength flooded her body— before she launched forth to try and batter back the puppy.

TL;DR:

Doug winced as his pokemon fell in a bewildered heap besides the champion, before clapping his hands.

"Don't let it get to ya, Kama! Don't overthink it and keep having fun!" He encouraged her as he cupped his hands around his mouth. Luckily, Kama seemed more confused than angry, so she didn't immediately switch to murderous intent as she rose, meeting her own opponent's refocused efforts—

Only for it to sink into the ground.

Kama spun on her heel immediately as if her instincts were screaming at her, attempting to strike first.

"Ya mean moves they shouldn't?" Doug asked back thoughtfully as their pokemon clashed, cupping his chin thoughtfully. Did any of his pokemon fit that bill...? "I can't recall off the top o'my head, but I don't think s—"

He paused, bopping his fist atop his hand.

"Oh, my accelgor did learn Shadow Sneak too, recently." He said.

Unfortunately, Kama proved a step too slow in her approach, her feet skidding along the ground as she took the blow before being able of returning one of her own, the strike dealing damage and widening the gap between them.

Vs kyle lopez

He was glad the guildmaster seemed to just be having fun as well; he suspected Kama wouldn't be able to enjoy herself much if the man really were trying to just blast through the competition.

Doug doesn't know much the little Poochyena before him, but it's Kyle's pokemon, so something was sure to be amyss.

"Go!" Doug nodded at his Scyther, who leapt forth seemingly to meet the Poochyena's charge— before suddenly attempting to vault over it to strike over head, swiping down with the flat of her Scythes.

Unfortunately, the scyther was not as wary of the champion as her trainer was, underestimating the little dog before her. As her strike bounced off the draconic aura of the Poochyena's charge, she found herself repelled wholly by the blast, sent hurtling high before landing in a heap besides Kyle, leaping back to her feet utterly bewildered by what had just happened.

Doug was in disbelief as much as Cian was.

"Holy shit, she really still got it." Doug said in awe, scratching at his cheek.

That dodge had been borderline majestic, specially given the stupidity that had brought her to the unfortunate circumstances that made her need to do it!

But...

"Can she bring it in?"

Time to see if the rust had truly been shaken off.

As yet another blast of water came, Kama's footwork was shakey on the wet flooring as body rolled, her wet wings flapping to try and course correct her movement out of the way before she rushed forward to try and finish the Froakie, swinging the flat of her scythe at it with a sharp, narrowed gaze.

"Ahoy, Guildmaster!" Doug greeted cheerfully, tipping his hat at the man. "'fraid this is only my second one, actually!"

He popped open a pocketwatch, humming thoughtfully.

"I'm tryin' to take it easy this time." He said as he calculated how much time he had left.

The League and the Hoenn public already knew he was capable at this point; he didn't need to grandstand on a world stage just to get his name out there anymore. And in any case... he liked to think he had outgrown his need for validation.

"I gotta get back to the ER after this, so... Show me a good time, champ!" He said, winking at the man as he sent out his Scyther.

The scyther landed lightly on the makeshift battlefield, cocking her head from one side to the other as she looked over her opponent... before dropped down and began to stretch.

Doug approached her from behind, his hands pressing to her back and helping her limber up.

"Just a sec! Kama pulled a few muscles in her first fight, so she's been all about yoga since." He said with an eyeroll.

Once they were done, the Scyther hopped back up to her feet, lightly hopping from one foot to the other before finally focusing back on Kyle and her pokemon, lowering her stance.

"Alright then— let's do this!"
