With an exaggerated floruish and a swipe of his hair, Doug winked at the other man.

"Is losing to the champion of the Hoennian Stars Tournament all that bad?" He said, tapping at his chin. "Well, I guess Melody Miro and MATIAS SILPH did stop talking to me after that."

Just playful ribbing, of course. They hadn't completely disappeared from his life since. Not at all. They still saw each other at work meetings!

Kama's gaze widened before the Scyther suddenly dropped low enough to the floor she almost appeared flat against it, the whipping wind of the high pressured water blast flying just inches above her caressing at her wings.

Immediately, her gaze snapped to one particular Froakie— the one from whom the only real blast, as best her wings could sense, had come from.

The legs beneath her were creaking and popping at the hips as she dug her scythe into the flooring beneath to pivot and launch herself forward, chitin scrapping against the floor as one foot dug deep into the soil before launching her high in the air, her body spinning wildly as it approached the real Froakie before she swung the flat of her scythe at her opponent.

He released a laugh, waving his hand before him as if just accepting Cian's words.

He hoped it was just acting, because it had been almost 22 years since he had last seen Cian and Doug still remembered the man; what was his excuse?

"'Fraid that's all rumour and exaggeration, Chief." He said, resting a hand on his hip as the other reached beneath his arm for a pokeball. "And in any case— I'm just a plain ol' medic now."

With that said... He chuckled.

"Couldn't resist joining in on the fun, though." He said, his gaze hovering over a watch before returning back to Cian. "Don't worry— we'll shake off m'rust along the way!"

Throwing his pokeball in the air, a ray of light was released back down on the makeshift battlefield, a bleary eyed Scyther stepping out of her pokeball.

She craned back her head and squinted at the sky before turning her gaze over to the man across from her partner, lightly cocking her head before slowly beginning to correct her posture with several audible creaks and pops.

One neck pop to one side, the next to the other, before she suddenly swung her arms sharply to either side, holding them parallel from each other as her gaze narrowed.

It had been a while since Kama had seen combat— but she remained his oldest powerhouse, for better or worse. She would shake off the rust eventually.

"Don't worry too much about winning, Kama! Just have fun with it!" He called out cheerfully to her, before turning his gaze back to Cian. "Got a whole half hour 'fore I gotta get back to the ER, so let's have fun!"

Tourneying between lunch breaks was a hell of a task, but he would manage.

Isaac and Eris weren't strangers— so he didn't need to be vague anymore.

"Eris' sight is riding on it." He said bluntly, popping all of his digits and his neck as he motioned for Isaac to lay down. "Yer sight is riding on it. The only thing ya should be thinking is: It will work."

Even if reality was willing to cooperate or not, they had to make it work.

He reached over, wiping away one stray tear.

"Then... how about we pick one?" He offered, smiling at Yuina.

What? No one can choose the date of their, or anyone elses' birth?

"A birthday means the most something to those who love ya." He said as he held out his hand to her. "To ourselves, it's just a day like any other. So... if we can't remember the original one, who says we can't decide on a new one?"

He scratched at his cheek nervously, before smiling.

"I'll celebrate it with ya, whichever day ya pick."

"I wasn't really paying attention to it, to be honest." He admitted with a chuckle, scratching his cheek with a digit as he glanced the way of the tablets. "Never been into astrology. Think I should try it?"

He might've not been a horoscope kinda guy, but he was even less of a party pooper.

That aside... he hadn't seen Yuina this quiet before; she seemed out of it. Was she tired? Maybe he had run a little too late.

"Unfortunately, I'll not be able to enjoy myself if you aren't here, so..." He smiled, lightly cocking his head. "Please endure my company for a bit longer. How about we go check our star signs together?"

Or whatever it was they were supposed to do. He was sure it would be amusing in any case.

"You're one step removed from being a zombie." He replied bluntly, cupping his own chin. "But, you ain't dead, I'll give it that."

Suicune... Perhaps an ability it had inherited from its own patron, Ho-oh? Not quite as thorough, but the result was more or less adequate.

"... Is his brain rotting too?" He suddenly said, staring flatly at his Orbeetle, who simply shook its head.

He suddenly raised his hand as if he was going to slap the patient.

"Then don't say stupid crap!" He said, before huffing. "Don't blame yourself for being murdered, jeez."

The self-esteem issues of people in Hoenn were beyond next level, jeez.

"If you died for them and still let them down, then the problem is them, not you." He said bluntly as he put on his face mask and tied a bandanna firmly around his head, fulling covering his hair in mesh. "Don't worry about them without first worrying about yourself; you can't help others without helping yourself first."

Whatever Suicune wanted, it should come second to whatever Isaac wanted, at least to Isaac of no one else.

Would he stop dying?

"What are you asking me for?" He scoffed. "Unless you're asking for training, it's all on you."

Hopefully, this literally deadly scrap at least proved a formative experience for Isaac.

"It hasn't been long." He said suddenly, moving on from the other's self-deprecation. "For all I know, the rest of you'll finish refreshing later on if left alone."

It could do that— or, it could keep putrefying until the outer layer looked about as well as the inner one.

"I ain't waiting around to see, though." He said simply, before nodding at his Orbeetle. "You're gonna be sleeping for a while— yer eye will have to wait, though."

Just outside of Camp Winstrate's chain fence gate, a guard booth could be found.

A guard was presumably supposed to be there doing a job, but instead, one John Douglas Sullivan sat in a swivel chair, feet up on the windowsill from which he was supposed to lookout from, and with his body reclined as far back as the chair would allow without dropping him on his ass.

Some thing would never change, it seemed.

At the sound of approaching footsteps, however, a single eye opened.

"Oh? Someone's early." He said as he saw her, his feet slipping off the window sill as he moved to stand, yawning. "Good day, Cadet Higashi!"

He hadn't expected things to be so... abrupt.

"W-woah!" He yelped the moment his focus came back to him, his body rocking atop the moving Cyclizar wildly.

The experience was not at all like riding a bike— the thing rocked way too much for such a comparison, no matter how many bike handles the people of Paldea attached to their pokwmon. Was this why specific saddles were used...?

That useless line of thought was brought to a crashing halt by the booming sound of micro-eruptions in the background, it not too unlike thundering in the distance— just a lot louder, and a lot hotter.

"Roger that!" He shouted back to Greyson, glancing over his shoulder for a moment as he adjusted his grip on the dragon beneath him before turning his gaze to the jungle they were now running through. "Let's hope it doesn't start burning before we're through!"

Or at the very least, that the fire didn't catch up to them.

"Oof." He uttered cheerfully as Yuina bounced off his chest, before cocking his head slightly. She looked... down.

Better fix that!

"That's sergeant to you, Cadet!" He began cheerfully, before winking. "'Ello! I ran a little late, sorry. Did I miss out on much?"

At the very least, he must've missed the memo, because he felt positively peasanty standing next to Yuina.

"You look amazing." He said as he took a step back, his eyes moving up and down her form before he chuckled, tugging at the fabric of his uniform. "Really regretting not going home now."

Mistakes were made.

As the words on the podium came to an end, Doug reached over to try and smack Hideo upside the head (very gently), scoffing at his joke.

"Act your age, you little bastard." Wait, he was 14 now... crass jokes were his bread and butter.

He clicked his tongue, unwilling to accept it. It wasn't his fault both Hideo Kino and Eris Halla looked like 8 year olds, almost as if their predetermined appearances had been chosen years ago and had remained set in stone since...

What a disconcerting line of thought.

Luckily, El Sunderland was there to bring him back down to Earth, their words making him crack a smile and laugh.

"Ah, no, no. Not like that." He said with a chuckle, reaching for his left sleeve before pulling on the band wrapped firmly around it, showing the golden thread etched and knitted into the blue fabric.

A proud blissey smiled at everyone from within the circular stitching, hovering over an illustration of flapping fabrics with the words 'Medic Corps' written in large, bold lettering across it.

"I was the doctor, not the patient." He explained with a chuckle. "Thanks for thought, though!"

Had he just gotten out of the ER as a patient, he would've probably been starving, given how his healing usually went...

Wait, speaking of Eris way before— where had gone...

His eyes trekked around looking for the toddler— er, teenager, before falling upon...

Not Eris, but another person near the counter. Yuina Higashi.

There she is! No, wait, wrong target. His gaze reluctantly moved on, finding Eris... near Navy and MATIAS SILPH...

Oh, no problems then! They could watch over her in the meanwhile!

With one of his kids being kept safe by Hoenn's finest, he ruffled the other's (read: Hideo's) hair for a moment and nodded at El and Isaac Merlo.

"Just a moment, folk— I'll be right back." He excused himself, before slipping past them.

He began walking through the crowd towards Yuina, occasionally standing on his tip toes over the crowd's heads between his steps to try and make eye contact.
