Razz was so kind as to give him a way out. A fork in the road, for talking about getting his new job. He'd rather not dwell on his Line Cook days. On his days of waiting hand and foot on tyrannical customers, not to mention kicking up dues to Rocket. On how you had to smoke to have a normal heart rate after a fast day at work.

Giona stalled out. He glistened, from a thin layer of sweat coating his body.

"I knew I had to do something with what I knew, which was that there are Ghost types that owe so much to human intervention, like Polteageist, or Chandelure. I had to tell people that we can build a powerful with Pokemon and the world. They already do it in Fortree. I set up my gym to teach people that."

Giona smiled. He seemed to adjust to the heat a little, having spent plenty of time sweating and dying out there. Today, he seemed a little more composed than usual.

"Oh, Hello."

A young man seemed to hobble around the event venue. He went out of his way to avoid others, which somehow landed him on the opposite side of a sand dune to Giona. He flashed a pokeball, and raised a brow. "Are you down for a battle? I've hit kind of a losing streak recently, it won't be too hard on your pokemon."

The ball sends out a red beam, followed by a shy little thing, under a Pikachu costume.

"--My bad. I'm the new Gym Leader from Rustboro. I'm heading home after this."

Open up about what he did before the gym? If this person knew he was a Rocket... Surely, he could say things that were technically true. That he worked for various front companies, or made sure that people paid protection on time.

"I was a line cook before this. Every week, I'd go on a hike to Mount Pyre, or Mount Chimney. Work was physically demanding enough, for me hiking was about wanting to challenge myself, while taking my pokemon out on walks."

Giona looked him over. His pause lingered in the air. Neither spoke, and the breeze wasn’t stiff enough to make a sound.

The Rockruff seemed to do just fine without interference from either trainer. In fact, it struck again with Rock Slide. It wasn't enough to knock out Sableye. However, Sableye trembled, struggling to support the weight of its tower shield. As an act of mercy, Giona called it back to a ball capsule, protecting it from further harm. He effectively surrendered.

Giona stalled out. He glistened, from a thin layer of sweat coating his body.

"I don't know. I don't actually know if you can do that. Melody Miro said she wanted to visit my gym, and I just couldn't say no. The sun is really taking its toll on everyone."

He was kind of checked out for this battle as well. It seemed to already be drawing to a close. Zebstrika's last Pursuit knocked Rotom right out. Giona hastily prepared a pokeball, a red beam shielding it from further harm. He then stuffed it in his pocket, and looked to her, breaking the silence. Breaking the distant but still focused energy around the battle.

"Good game. I suppose it's only fair to give you this."

Giona then stepped across the sand dune slowly. He held out a hand just close enough for Zebstrika to smell him, but no further. He then drew closer to her, holding out what looked like a little steel pin depicting three balls of fire orbiting a central point. It looked like the move Will o Wisp.

"You displayed the learning objectives necessary to get it. By keeping your cool. By striking the perfect balance between trusting your team, and knowing when to guide them.

He was kind of checked out for this battle as well. It seemed to already be drawing to a close. Zebstrika's wild charge clipped Rotom, and it was pretty close to being knocked out already. He thought for a second. Running was always on the table.

"..."

Giona blinked, looking at the display before him. Rotom used Hex to try and get Darmanitan on its way out. A psychic wave that'd intensify the paralyzing feeling if it connected. Two versus one spelled disaster for him, regardless of how much either of them paid attention.

However she conducted herself next, Rotom was definitely on its way out. It was already starting to pant. If either of them could see the concept of HP, it'd definitely be close to red by now.

Giona looked him over. His pause lingered in the air. Neither spoke, and the breeze wasn’t stiff enough to make a sound. Razz struck him as comically serious. He had a hard time approaching people he knew nothing about, but now he had a vague mental archetype for him. A space that King Wayland also occupied.

"Yeah, that really surprised me too. Truth be told, Ivysaur isn't going into the gym. It's mostly there to watch the Rowlet while I'm at work."

The Rockruff seemed to do just fine without interference from either trainer. In fact, it followed up with Thunder Fang. A devastating move that left Sableye panting. It seemed like too little too late at this point, but he had to know if it'd work. "Yeah, Sableye and Chandelure really need it."

Giona tugged at the towel around his neck. It kept the sun off him, but it also trapped heat and moisture on his skin. He fought the elements harder than any pokemon here. The sun clearly had a vendetta against him, but he put up with it. It was always better to have something actively mad at you than passively simmering.

Sableye expanded. The stone in its chest swelled, forming a tower-shield for it to cower behind. It responded in turn by using Zen Headbutt, trying to make Rockruff flinch, before putting up the shield again.

"It still needs work. But... A few more of these tournament cycles, and I think I'd be able to challenge all the other gyms."

Giona smiled. Giona looked to him, glistening because of a thin layer of sweat all over. Once again, Sam insisted on helping him. With the building in sight, no less. He had to avoid seeming ungrateful.

"I’m almost there. Then... I'll finish the rest of this six pack, and it'll be fine."

A minute of adjusting his damp towel followed. Giona felt his eyes light up at the mention of a pool of cool water."...That sounds great, but I'm so close already. It'd be a waste to give up at this point."

Giona continued to walk towards that building in the distance. By the time he got there, his sweaty hand left perfect fingerprints on the bar on the door. Finally near some air conditioning, he slumped into the nearest chair and chugged another can of sparkling water, not just to get hydrated, but to fight off his throat expanding and closing in the heat.

Giona smiled. Sam wore a bulky hoodie and still saw fit to escort him out of the sun. His kidneys must be going through something even more intense than any blast on the field. Giona looked to him, glistening because of a thin layer of sweat all over.

"I’m sure you’re busy, but I appreciate your concern."

A minute of adjusting his damp towel followed. Giona then started to gather his belongings, picking up his 6 pack of sparkling water and pokeballs. He then started towards the building."...Good game. I think I need to spend more time training Rowlet, and that Ivysaur."

Giona seemed to avoid physical contact, not out of discomfort, but out of concern that he’d be gross. That he’d have a sick dog’s texture. For now, he’d have to weakly smile and plan his escape to his home in Rustboro.

kyle vs giona h✩t

They all had duties. Duties they neglected to go to this glorified cookout. Nonetheless, Kyle made him weirdly hard by suggesting that he expedite the process to get to visit. Seemed like a lot of work, and Giona had to just bluster and keep it cool.

"It means a lot that you'd say that. If you didn't jump the line, you'd be number twelve."

The waves rolled in. Being a gym leader meant dealing with regional crises? This could pose a... conflict of interest. He got in at first just because it was a teaching job with a low barrier to entry. Maybe he'd fall out of it like Rustboro's last.

"Either way, we're both busy." He paused. "But if you're ever in the area, I'll try my best to make time for you."

They really were distracted from the battle. For Chu-e it may have been different. For Giona, the entire tournament was a string of slightly embarrassing losses. He'd checked out, and made a point to just hang out with his friends.

"--Point taken."

Giona said, thinking about his next comment. He then whistled a slowly descending note, like a sound effect for someone falling.

"...Yeah. I'm not familiar with this format either." Gengar "fell" into a hole made by Phantom Force, trying to get the jump on Shiinotic.

A quick blast of light was all it took. Rowlet could’ve held out if it responded to the hurricane with Synthesis, but that didn’t happen. Giona made a bad call and that was it. "...Good game."

The little football was withdrawn with a red beam. Giona curled his fingers to avoid flashing the red R. Rowlet was spared further harm by this, and Sam was the winner.

"I’d have to see what days off I have, then compare them to your calendar. Either way, I'm quick to reply to emails."

Nonetheless, a cloud of dust is whipped up by Hurricane. Rowlet is carried away, dropped and nearly buried in the sand. Still barely up. Giona on the other hand buried his face in his towel to avoid sand in his eyes. "...Let's try that again. Rowlet, use Pluck."

The little football sprung into action. It tried to lunge, and clip Whimsicott with its beak. To use Pluck right away.
