There is a subtle crunch as she chews through the salad in her mouth. It is thoughtful, distinct, as she thinks over his inquiry. She's met men like him, been personable, even. He was prying, looking for information.[break][break]

She swaps to her spoon, dips it into the soup, lifts it to her lips. The taste takes her by surprise, as does the warmth as it trickles down her throat. It brings a very small smile to her face.

The silence isn't uncomfortable - what is is the plate and bowl set before her. It smells.. good, and good was always suspicious.[break][break]

Her eyes shift to him again, her expression neutral, polite, perfect. But beneath the porcelain doll-like face is a wash of suspicion. She doesn't allow her eyes to wander, even though the writing that bleeds through the back of the letter beckons to her, she doesn't slip. [break][break]

"Of course, sir."[break][break]

Her words carry double meaning- a response both to his thanks and to his invitation to eat. Slowly, the woman reaches for her fork, forgoing the hot soup in favor of what is on the plate. [break][break]

"I have been familiarizing myself with the city, settling in, reconnecting with my brother."[break][break]

Suzu finds his smile, but her attention doesn't linger. She looks away and back to her plate, fork stuck with lettuce. The woman isn't hungry, but he's insisted.

She did not often curse THEO BECKETT, but today she did.[break][break]

GABRIEL BLACK had scheduled her for a mundane, frivolous task that felt unimportant and useless. The man - her boss - insisted the event was a necessary evil to show his support for the relief efforts and whatever else they were fundraising for. It looked good on paper, he said, and that's all that mattered.[break][break]

It was a public stunt, and rather than attend himself (though she reasoned he might show up eventually for photographs), he'd sent his little sparrow.[break][break]

And so she sits perched in her tiny brass birdcage, faking a smile and taking down names, numbers, business meetings and alike while handing out cookies she almost certainly purchased moments before the bake sale fundraiser started. Fresh-baked and homemade, of course, with no sale stickers or evidence of where she'd gotten them.[break][break]

She is nothing if not perfect and thorough.

Within this house, she often felt like a bird trapped behind thin brass strappings, with only a tiny door to let her out. Eyes watched her constantly, made her tiny bird-like heart beat rapidly in her chest.[break][break]

Or it would have, if she wasn't trained for this.[break][break]

Even still, as she approaches the dining room to deliver a letter for the man at the head of the table, she feels discomfort as numerous eyes turn to watch her every move. She was a bird in the center of the lion's den.[break][break]

Her eyes glance up from the Pyroar at the forefront of the pile, her honey brown eyes settling on Gabriel's face. He doesn't look up from his dinner plate but seems to recognize her anyway. There is only a moment of hesitation, measured to look natural, made purposefully - though there was some nugget of truth - before she approaches to sit in one of the available seats. [break][break]

She sets the letter down to slide it toward him.[break][break]

"The man who dropped this off insisted it was urgent - I wouldn't have interrupted your meal if it sounded as though he were lying."

Suzume's face is pinched in a permanent expression of disgust and disbelief. On her shoulder, her Spearow buries into her neck painfully, sharp claws threatening to tear at skin and fabric alike.[break][break]

"Those little toebeans have daggers attached to them, you know that right? One wrong step and you've lost an eye."[break][break]

The same could be said for birds, but strip them of their wings and feathers and you have a grounded, useless animal. Cats didn't need to fly to rip your heart out.[break][break]

Slowly, Suzu looks up at the tree in question, and Ryuu's prattling becomes a lot more annoying than even she's expecting. Is he daft?[break][break]

"Are you seriously going to compare me to a cat? That's low, Ryuu."

"Woahh..."[break][break]

Suzume gently unfurls the paper, eyes widening in awe at the Volcarona. It is hovering above a nest of eggs and she can almost feel the warmth it gives off despite it being an illustration. The little girl looks up at Jayden just as he slowly pronounces the Pokemon's name to her.[break][break]

"It's a Volcarona, yeah! I remember this one- it saved my best friend. He almost froze to death."[break][break]

She says this nonchalantly as if it were a throwaway fact. But there is a note of pride in her voice at the knowledge she has on this topic. [break][break]

"This will be fun!"[break][break]

And then, because her hands are free from bird feathers, she lets go of the page with one hand to reach for Jayden's. She holds it, small fingers holding onto him like a child might an older sibling.

Suzu was cold only because she was misinformed. She is taken aback quite visibly by Tori's warmer greeting. [break][break]

She missed me?[break][break]

Was that the truth, or just something familiar faces were obligated to say when they hadn't seen someone in a while? It felt like it should be the latter, but the way Tori's gaze falters and her voice dips suggests it's the former.[break][break]

"You've got a funny way of showing it."[break][break]

The woman stares back even though her sister's gaze purposefully doesn't meet hers. Eventually, the raven-haired woman's sharp eyes relocate, settling on another target that still isn't her, but has managed to earn the ire of her electricity. Sparks fly that aren't welcoming, and Suzu feels her blood run cold at the familiar voice in her ear.[break][break]

"Xan."[break][break]

He wasn't supposed to be here. She glances to Tori, hesitating under her cold stare and the chilling note in her voice. It's unfriendly, which may not help the situation.[break][break]

"I'm visiting with a friend. She has severe social anxiety, so we were hoping we'd be alone."[break][break]

Eleven years old, trembling at the slightest touch, but determined to success, to prove to ryuuzaki amemiya that she was just as strong as he was. That she would protect him just like he protects her.[break][break]

This time, however, her teacher is someone similar in age to herself. He towers above her, all arms and legs and dark hair. He wears his child-like wonder behind an uncomfortable stare and a nervous stutter.[break][break]

Wide eyes stare back up at him at his question, full of awe and wonder. Clutched in the fold of her tiny arms is a Spearow. When he offers her the scroll she opens her arms, letting the Spearow slip. He caws, disgruntled, before settling on her head. With a wince, she takes the scroll from him and opens it.

[attr="class","textbox"]Immediately, her thoughts race and her eyes scan the room for exits, for escape routes, for any means at all to get out quickly and without a scene. The door is right there, the windows are easy to open and she is small enough to squeeze through.[break][break]

Her eyes keep coming back to the meteorite shard sitting on the shelf. It's out of the way, hardly noticable, and yet she'd been drawn to it immediately. She felt nauseous, agitated, unsure what to do. Her instincts begged her to take it and run- to make a convincing excuse and get out of there with the fragment in her hand.[break][break]

And yet, her ass remains rooted in the couch and she exhales as Xander re-enters the room. If he'd hesitated too long in the kitchen overthinking, she was none-the-wiser.[break][break]

"Yeah.. yeah, I'm still here."[break][break]

Suzu does not really smile, however, perhaps a weak twitch of her lip. It hurts to do even that, now, at this point. Her cheek is sore and her lip is swollen and aching, and even still she chews the inside of her cheek to redirect the pain.[break][break]

"Oww.."[break][break]

She sucks in her breath as coldness is pressed to her lip. One hand instinctively rises to grab his, holding his wrist tightly, acting defensively. Suzume loosens her grip after a moment when she realizes the pressure against her face doesn't increase.[break][break]

"You need me here."
