Another week, another trip to the Safari Zone, another capture list, and another Pokémon that could do with getting some training in. This time it’s his Gholdengo.

“Come along.” Mars tells Oro, even though he knows he probably does not need to. The Gholdengo had been trained well, but it had not been trained by him. Thus the need for verbal cues… for now, at least.

When the Rotom darts by, Mars barely notices it; only coming to realize what he's seen when it appears a second time. It seems to follow him for a bit, zapping from tree to tree as if taunting him.

Of course, the more likely reason is that it's attracted to electronic devices Mars has on him (phone, smartwatch, and so on), for those are a rarity in this graveyard of a mountain, but honestly Mars prefers his reasoning.

“Really? Hmm… We did find those Dhelmise before. They must have come from our dimension.” Mars muses when hearing Cillian Quinn’s revelations, continuing to use the DEEP SEA SCALE to separate the gelatinous eggs from their clutch. Small as they are despite a full grown Nihilego’s size, two fit perfectly in the incubator, leaving just enough space for a third one…

Mars would never even get to choose a third egg.

It’s BARNABY FINCH’s panic that steals Mars’ attention away from the clutch. Reaching to close the incubator, he turns to look at the admin, and it’s then that he sees it: the stress, the panic, and the irrational fear in his lover’s gaze.

“Shit.” Mars is quick to stand, leaving Xanthos to look after the incubator. What had happened? Had Barnaby been attacked? Is this a Nihilego’s toxins at work? Where had they come from? Are there Nihilego here? How can they fix this? Will the vaccines work?

A million thoughts race into his mind, and at the same time, Mars raises to Barnaby’s side.

“Steel, I need you to bring the vaccines here NOW.” Will it even work? Mars can’t know for sure, but the message is spoken with urgency while hands grab onto Barnaby’s wrists to stop him from bringing himself anymore harm. This leaves comms opened, and Mars is thankfully aware of that. “Bee! Bee, listen to me!”

Mere words will never work.

Mars is no expert on neurotoxins and things of the like, but he does know quite a lot about psychic manipulation — having had been at both the receiving end and causing it. So, what can he do to help Barnaby? Aromatherapy is quickly discarded as a soothing option, given who is present. Instead, while still firmly holding onto Barnaby with one hand, Mars reaches for the Pokéball holster clipped to his Sygna suit’s belt with the other, releasing a Gardevoir and a Musharna.

“Pasithea, light Hypnosis, then Dream Eater. Phemonoe, Heal Pulse. Quick.”

Musharna feed off nightmares; it should theoretically provide some relief in a situation like this. If the Heal Pulse manages to flush out the toxins, then that buys him enough time to get Barnaby the fuck out of here. He could teleport him away if he weren’t wearing his Sygna suit. Mars hates this fucking Sygna Suit.

Turns out they might need the time he buys, because while he's preoccupied with Barnaby's wellbeing, just as Gavin and Micah's approaching footsteps become louder and louder, eggs begin to hatch one after another...

Weirdly enough, they don't spot any Cutiefly until they almost reach the Safari Zone's exit. It's Zero that sees it first: flying up in the canopy of a tree. He points upwards, showing Mars the sight through their psychic connection, and at that moment the banker smirks.

With the smallest of hops, the Unown takes off, breaking contact with the ground and levitating upwards like a balloon. Xero is unique in the way he prefers walking, but that does not mean he can't levitate when he wishes, even with his CURSED BODY. A warlike screech warns Mars of the presence of a potentially hostile pokémon nearby, but unlike the Unown, Boreas can't just show him what concerns it. This being the case, the runner chooses to trust his companion, whistling once for Boreas to deal with the issue.

A battle ensues and soon a Beheeyem falls from the skies. Mars watches it, his gaze shifting up towards his Braviary once he's sure the threat is dealt with. At that moment, he smiles.

Mesprit emotions are clear in its gaze, and Mars smiles at the sight. He has always liked that about the guardians: even though the trio had twisted their lives and turned them upside down with all of their puzzles and secrets, there's a certain purity about their existence. Pure emotion. Pure knowledge. Pure willpower. At that moment, Mars wishes he could see Azelf again; to return to that feeling the Being of Willpower had instilled in him on the night they met.

"I think that's a possibility, yes." Mars admits, looking at Eris. "How weakened is Mesprit? Clearly she intends on staying by your side, and she will probably try to protect you if something were to happen..."

He's about to sat something else when Eris' next words come, and it's then that a slight frown darkest his expression for a second. She knows exactly what Team Rocket will do if Chu-e Choi decides to leave for good, just as she knows what most of them would think of her questioning her loyalty. Mars takes a deep breath, grounding himself — pushing tumultuous emotions away. They're no more than noise, after all. He can't let them distract him from the objective reality of the situation.

The Tatsugiri are so small that they can barely be seen on the partially snow-covered ground unless one is looking for them, but so happens be that Mars is looking for them. Standing by the edge of the stream, he looks down at the ground, and lo and behold, there is one.

It would be easy to take Eris' side in all of this. The League are their enemies and they clearly will go as far as getting children involved. However, Mars can also understand Melody Miro's reasoning, and Eris has often been considered a potential hazard to Team Rocket?

"Bad move." Mars thinks of Melody's actions, for threatening children is rarely the way to get them to really agree with anything. There will always be a resentment in them, even if fear pushes them to comply. Mars knows from experience.

"See... What did she say she'd do if you choose Rocket?" He asks, knowing there had likely been some sort of threat to get her to sway one way instead of the other. Repercussions for Eris, or more likely, for those who matter to her. But, the person who matters to her the most has already been captured...

"I know you're scared about what's happening with your Pa, but we'll do what we can to get him out."

He sees it then: the eyes. The weight of a stare that feels disconcertingly familiar. Similar but not quite right.

It has been a difficult year for both of them, and saying as much would probably be a huge understatement. Much has been won and much has been lost. However, when thinking back to all of it, to all of his success and to all the things he wishes he had done differently, the banker finds that the scale skews heavily towards one side.

Business has been better than ever. He has gained power; financially, within Team Rocket, and even in the form of literal skills most would be envious of. He has come much closer to achieving the goal that had first pushed him to come to Hoenn. He has survived, conquered, and thrived. And perhaps most importantly of all, he has found joy in his life.

The mention of BARNABY FINCH makes him smile. Mars doesn't care to hide that much.

"I'll make sure to tell him, but we're planning on meeting up at the casino right before midnight." A private room and everything; the perfect place for them to await the New Year. "Is it really ending blandly, though?"

He looks at Summer Atreides, being fully aware of much of what has happened to her throughout these last few months. The good and the bad. Everything that could go wrong had gone wrong, and yet, here she is, having a drink with him...

"As I see it, you've achieved a lot, Summer. You should be proud of where you are, because many wouldn't have made it had they been in your shoes." He's honest, and it's then that his glass is raised towards his friend, as if he were making a toast. "I, for one, am damn proud of you."
