Typically, Summer would want to go to a bar or club where her name was known. Where the crowds of people would bow at her presence and beg for her attention, for a single gaze from her. But, for some reason, when she asked her dear friend Martín del Mar if he'd like to join her for a drink, she decided on a location she had never frequented before in Rustboro.[break][break]

The Burning Maw. It was an intimidating name indeed, but the atmosphere seemed rather cozy to her. She had arrived a bit earlier than anticipated, so she settled in one of the bar stools, looking of the menu of drink options.[break][break]

As the bartender approached, Summer looked up, tilting her head. "What's a special you have going for the season?" she inquired.[break][break]

"Right now, our special drink is the Zombie. A mix of Hoennian rum, Alolan gold rum, and 151-proof demerara rum; anise liqueur; nomel juice; Donn's mix; falernum; grenadine; and Angostura bitters. Mint sprig to top, if you'd like it."[break][break]

Summer hummed, tapping her chin with a manicured nail before nodding. "I'll take it. And mint sprig on top, please," she said, sitting up straighter as she heard the familiar buzz of her phone notifying her of an email.[break][break]

So she was rather distracted that she didn't hear her friend approach until the last moment.

Summer Atreides is one of the only people in all of Hoenn for whom Mars would go just about anywhere, even if anywhere in this case means a bar he’s not all that familiar with. It doesn’t matter, does it? In the end, what matters is having one last drink with his friend before the year ends.

When he enters the bar in question, he finds Summer distracted by her phone, so obviously he makes the kind of mature choice that is to be expected from the CEO of a multinational financial institution…. or not. He approaches, and once right behind her, it’s to her ear that he simply whispers:

“Boo.”

He immediately takes one step back, of course, and it’s then that Summer is greeted with the brightest of smiles:

“Hello, dulzura. If you tell me duty calls I’ll be very sad and disappointed.” He'd understand it, really. Even if it is New Year's Eve. They both work too hard.

He takes a seat, looking at her.

One would think that Summer would be able to feel his presence behind her, feel his breath as he breathed against her neck or her ear before he spoke. But she was so engulfed in making sure her affairs were in order that she didn't.[break][break]

So, when she felt him blow air by her ear as he spoke, she jumped, almost dropping her phone on the ground. Whirling around, she was ready to give someone a piece of her mind for disturbing her when she saw that dazzling smile.[break][break]

"If I didn't know you, I would've put a fist between your perfect teeth, del Mar," she warned him, though the tension eased from her as she finally gave him a smile back.[break][break]

"No, nothing of the sort. Just a last minute message to clear out. I wanted to make sure everything was handled before I took the holiday off," she said with a sip from her glass.[break][break]

Summer held it out to him for him to look over, sip, sniff, whatever he'd like to do. "The Burning Maw's special — called the Zombie. It's more of a Halloween name in my opinion, but it's good to me. Lots of rum."

He gasps, acting shocked, as if he had done nothing to deserve Summer’s obviously cruel and unneeded threats.

“You would never. They’re too nice to look at.” As if to prove this point, he grins, his radiant smile indeed displaying perfect strings of pearly whites. It’s the sort of smile that could easily belong in a toothpaste commercial. The sort of smile dentists use as example to convince people to get expensive treatments. No one would ever want to be rid of a smile like that, right?

“Jokes aside, it’s a good idea to make sure everything is handled. Employees sure seem to struggle with thinking for themselves sometimes.”

It’s not the sort of thing he’d say in front of most people, but Summer has both his trust and an understanding of the struggles that come with running a corporation — especially given that she’s much newer to this life. Admittedly, Mars is rather proud of what she has accomplished in this time.

“Zombie, hm? Rum’s not usually my thing but sure, I’ll bite.” Get it? Because zombie. Oh, he’s just so funny, isn’t he? “How’s life treating you? Ending the year on a good note?”

Summer didn't comment on his teeth, only laughing as her hand rested back on her drink. It lifted to her mouth, giving her a well deserved, alcoholic treat.[break][break]

"No kidding. I just wish that when everyone knows business hours are over, I would like some time away from work as well," she huffed, turning her phone on silent. Now, it was time to focus on her and her friend. Anything else could be handled at another time.[break][break]

She stuck her tongue out at his joke. Cheesy. The glass made its way back to her lips, waving down the bartender to get another drink for him.[break][break]

"I suppose so. You know, frankly, it's ending rather blandly. I'm not complaining about it because this year's been one of the shittier ones in comparison."[break][break]

Mars already knew several of the details of her life. First, losing her boyfriend in some mystery accident. The complete and utter hell that was hiding her brother from her father. Finding out said boyfriend was alive, and after a while, breaking off their engagement and losing their child. Murdering her father.[break][break]

"I know that yours is ending happier though, right? I'm guessing you and BARNABY FINCH will be ringing it in together. You two are more than welcome to come to my party, you know. However, if you want to skip, I wouldn't blame you for it either."

It has been a difficult year for both of them, and saying as much would probably be a huge understatement. Much has been won and much has been lost. However, when thinking back to all of it, to all of his success and to all the things he wishes he had done differently, the banker finds that the scale skews heavily towards one side.

Business has been better than ever. He has gained power; financially, within Team Rocket, and even in the form of literal skills most would be envious of. He has come much closer to achieving the goal that had first pushed him to come to Hoenn. He has survived, conquered, and thrived. And perhaps most importantly of all, he has found joy in his life.

The mention of BARNABY FINCH makes him smile. Mars doesn't care to hide that much.

"I'll make sure to tell him, but we're planning on meeting up at the casino right before midnight." A private room and everything; the perfect place for them to await the New Year. "Is it really ending blandly, though?"

He looks at Summer Atreides, being fully aware of much of what has happened to her throughout these last few months. The good and the bad. Everything that could go wrong had gone wrong, and yet, here she is, having a drink with him...

"As I see it, you've achieved a lot, Summer. You should be proud of where you are, because many wouldn't have made it had they been in your shoes." He's honest, and it's then that his glass is raised towards his friend, as if he were making a toast. "I, for one, am damn proud of you."
