Of course, he had not expected the conversation to quickly take a turn towards topics that are far more serious in nature, and Hideo’s mention of his parents sure raises a lot of questions – even the Flittle looks startled for a second! Why had he run away from home? Where is he living now? Is he safe? How the hell did he manage to survive in Hoenn without parental supervision for a whole year? If anything, it sure helps with explaining why Hideo often seems to go to the most dangerous of places, since no adult in their right might would have allowed that.

The responsible and caring thing would be to call child services once this conversation is over with, but who knows if Mars will do as much (no, no he won’t).

It’s Circe that pauses first, her folded ears twitching and lifting just so slightly. She points straight ahead, and when looking in that direction, it takes Mars a short moment to realise what she’s trying to show him. There’s nothing and yet sunlight bounces off as if meeting the clearest of glass.

Hoenn is meant to be a tropical region; there shouldn’t be snow like this in winter. Yet, for years now, there has been cause after cause for snowfall, ranging from radiation from Ultra Wormholes to the eternal frost summoned by a gargantuan Kyurem only a few weeks ago. Perhaps that says something about the region, or even about the fate of this universe. Perhaps, in the end, the Origin Point will be the Big Freeze that overtakes it all and destroys the world.

For now, though, there’s simply snow, and in that snow plays an innocent Sandshrew, blissfully unaware of the silent witch that watches it closely.

One gesture is all it takes for the witch to strike, scattering her MAGIC POWDER in the chill breeze before hitting the wild pokémon with a now all too effective BRUTAL SWING.

Instead, a small yet ever so cantankerous pokémon appears from among the bushes, running towards them as fast as its little legs will allow. Apparently, Adrian has no idea what it is.

”You’ve never been to Paldea?” Mars asks out of curiosity just as the Unown levitate closer, intercepting the small grass type. As his surname would perhaps imply, the banker is more than familiar with the region from which his ancestors come. ”That’s a Capsakid. They’re like pests in the Asado Desert. Never seen one in Hoenn before, though.”

It’s not exactly ski resort material, especially not with the countless frozen corpses of Pokémon that stand all over the field as if ice statues – truly giving the Silent Iceland an eerie atmosphere. There’s no doubt that Hoenn’s ever so skilled tourism agencies will eventually manage to make Kyurem’s wasteland seem as if it were another one of the region’s multiple fascinating attractions, but for now, to most it’s no more than a reminder of all the suffering they had so very recently endured…

The Gholdengo doesn’t really seem to care about any of that, though.

Standing on its golden board, it glides effortlessly over the iceland, as if it were an expert snowboarder with no need for slopes. By its side, a man calmly walks, not being nearly as interested in enjoying the snow as his golden pokémon. He’s much more preoccupied with their surroundings – eyes equally as golden searching for something.

There’s the question: Why attend at all, then?

It’s the obvious thing to ask, but to Mars it denotes a few simple truths. Truths like the fact that she probably has no idea who he is, and that she either suspects that he’s involved in some shady dealings or is actually clueless as to what he may have gone to the fights for. For blue murtagh’s sake, he hopes it's not the latter – she seems smart enough to understand the environment she’s working in.

”Ah…” Before he can explain, a SWEET SCENT fills the air and Dollar growls low, looking in the direction of an Amoonguss that seems to intend to attack them. Mars clicks his tongue, and when he does so, the Persian attacks, dealing with the wild pokémon.

Calmly, Mars looks around as if ensuring the Amoonguss didn’t have any company, his attention soon returning to the woman.

”I suppose that if I introduce myself it’ll make sense…” Here, in this empty street in the middle of the night, he offers a firm handshake, his gaze meeting hers. There’s something cold in his eyes of gold, and the slight smirk that tugs at his lips is as sharp as a blade. ”Underboss Del Mar.”

”Ah, so your family had one too?” It’s said in the most nonchalant way possible, but he too is joking, of course. Frost rarely finds its way to the blooming gardens that Catalina Marzán is so very proud of, but that does not make them any less deadly or dangerous.

Still, joking quips soon make way for more serious matters, even if the wild pokémon that venture into their path are far from that: a Vanilluxe, for starters, looking as silly as its evolution line usually does. Naturally, the Unown are quick to deal with the intruder when it gets a little too close to the pair.

Mars ignores the sound of HIDDEN POWER being shot.

”Looks like Ice pokémon are happy with that too. Wonder if these all came out of the cave…” A Luxury Ball is thrown towards the Vanilluxe when it falls, and it’s then that Mars returns his attention to his friend. ”Did you find it back then? Articuno?”

Adrian’s apprehension is also unsurprising in this case, even if it’s one Mars himself doesn’t exactly share. It’s natural for others to hold a certain grudge against the Unown that had accompanied Father Winter when the assassin had played his murderous tricks on them, but Mars himself has his own opinion regarding the Symbol Pokémon.

”Well yeah, you’d probably try to kill it.” He chuckles, noticing that the Unown’s attention has fallen upon another pokémon lurking among the trees. A Shiinotic, this time. He doesn’t need to voice his approval for them to act.

”It did choose to leave Winter when I called to the Unown back then, though. I think that’s part of why his plan didn’t work.” The underboss admits, something which he definitely hasn’t shared with most, nor had been included in his report. ”Might want to keep that to yourself, though.”

He’s about to respond when the Trevenant attacks, and while he could easily order Dollar to help Melody out, her Meowscarada seems to have the situation more than handled. So, instead, Mars lets his Persian fixate its attention on a rising pile of dirt.

When Dollar pounces, the pile of dirt turns out to be a Bunnelby, and it’s of course easily caught by the feline. No issue at all. But, cats do love to play with their food…

”Maybe it doesn’t like pink.” Mars offers as reasoning for the Trevenant’s attack, still smirking, and just like that, he chucks a Luxury Ball towards the Bunnelby before Dollar keeps chasing it around.

Out of all of his Pokémon, it’s one of his Meowstic that accompanies Mars for his hike up to the summit of Mount Pyre. He had jogged as high as he could go, but on this particular morning he feels like taking a moment to appreciate the eerie mountain’s view of Hoenn.

He also apparently feels like having Circe with him, despite the fact that the Meowth of luscious white fur generally only aids with one very particular aspect of his work for Team Rocket (here’s a little fourth wall break for you: maybe Azul just needed a white pokémon for today’s advent prompt).

Circe doesn’t seem too impressed by her surroundings, honestly, but it’s with grace that she walks up to Mount Pyre’s summit, as if it were no effort at all.
