”Okay, Xan. I need you to take this seriously.” Mars tells the Dragapult which in turn looks at him, tilting its head in utter confusion. Naturally, the Dreepy in its horns also do so. ”We have a performance coming up, so I need you to be in the best shape possible.”

The Dragapult wags the tip of its tail as if it were a happy pup, but Mars has a feeling it doesn’t really understand what he’s talking about.

Oh well, no time to waste.

With this said, he starts jogging, and of course, the ever so clingy pokémon follows right along, easily keeping up with his speed while in flight. Must be nice to not have to walk, right?

As they keep walking down the snow-covered path, no pokémon are to be found, as if they all had suddenly decided to go into hibernation. That may be true for certain species, sure, but if the Safari Zone were to be stocked with pokémon that remain in hiding for the entirety of its guests' visits, it would kind of defeat its purpose.

The pokémon are somewhere, but where?

The answer comes when a nearby pile of snow rumbles and shakes, beginning to lose its form. Alert, Delphi jumps forward, but thankfully what they have awakened is no abominable snowman.

It’s an Eiscue, and quite a friendly one at that; it waddles closer to the feline, as if curious by this pokémon that most definitely does not belong among all this ice.

Delphi does not seem to mind it all that much.

The bright, amethyst gaze of the Espeon is serene as she watches the Zangoose, their demeanors being nothing short of polar opposites. Where MC hisses and scratches, Delphi remains perfectly calm – taking steps that don’t seem to make a single sound. That much is to be expected; she had been bred and trained to be this way, after all.

By her side, the steps of the CEO are also incredibly quiet, but in an environment like this busy office, that much may be almost impossible to notice. They have other things to focus on; such as the door John’s Zangoose soon leads them to.

There is no praise just yet.
[break][break]
”Seems so. Let’s have a look, then.” Mars declares then, waiting for John to open the door and show them the results of his pokémon’s efforts. Will they find the missing gifts? Will they find the culprit?

Yes and no.
[break][break]
For, see, when the door is open, what they find are gifts indeed, a couple of them: scratched, torn to pieces, and robbed of half of their content. Some of the wrapping paper hangs incriminatingly from an open vent, and with it, so does a golden tinsel garland that looks as if it had been handled by a pokémon as wild as the Zangoose herself.

The supply closet is a crime scene and it is fucking disastrous.

”The vents…” A pokémon sneaking through the building’s vents or perhaps many of them. Mars knows those claw marks all too well. He sighs there and then. ”It must have been the Meowth.”

In the end, the Unown only acts when Mars makes the wise (not) decision to lean against a rock. Since, as it turns out, it’s actually no rock at all, and with some rumbling and some turning, a Runerigus appears, revealing the painted pattern that characterises it.

HIDDEN POWER strikes before the pokémon can try anything, and Mars too teleports out of harm’s way.

As it turns out, the Unown-D may be unwilling or incapable to use the power it once had, but as it turns out, a super effective attack at just the right time can still do much.

Brushing non-existent dust off his clothes, Mars chucks a Luxury Ball at the haunted stones.

Even with snow coating a large portion of the Safari Zone, a herd of Mareep peacefully grazes nearby, bringing Mars reminders of the one he had encountered at this same spot about a year ago. Back then, he had captured an adorable pink Mareep, which had then been given to luka chêne as a present.

This time, the Mareep of his choice is far more ordinary.

Pink isn’t exactly his colour anyway, and so, the one wool of the one Delphi soon chases after is as white as the snow around them. It’s just going to be another piece of his collection, anyway. It doesn’t need to be shiny.

Delphi, of course, is ever so efficient in dealing with her targets.

BARNABY FINCH had decided to call him a cheesy romantic, and of course, as should only be expected, Mars has the perfect retort. Stepping closer to the journalist, under the fading lights of the AURORA VEIL cast by their own pokémon, golden eyes meet cobalt ones, and Mars whispers sweet words that are meant only for Barnaby to hear:

”I may be a cheesy romantic, trésor, but never forget that I’m only a cheesy romantic with you.”
[break][break]
His smirk is as proud as it is devilish, and with a chaste kiss on the cheek, his words are sealed. Just like that, he takes Barnaby’s hands, allowing their fingers to intertwine.
[break][break]
”Alright, let’s go check out those booths…” Most of his pokémon are returned with a one handed motion, swapping between Luxury Balls. The Mr Rime remains to guard his masterpiece of a snowboy from any further attacks, and of course, dearest Pollux trots happily by his side. ”...And about that hot chocolate!”
[break][break]
That part is louder, as it is meant more for Locke Jamison, luka chêne, ana fell, Ashley Shepard, Isaac Merlo, Eris Halla and all of their pokémon than for Barnaby. But, even though he had managed to mostly gone unnoticed by the CEO until now (something for which he’s likely thankful for), kepler brueshaber is present as well, and it’s Kepler’s own pokémon that decides to throw one last snowball…right towards Mars himself.

Still holding Barnaby’s hand, Mars swats the snowball away with the other, as if it were no more than a pest.

”Kep, I’d make a joke about delay, but I think neither of us want that.” It's said innocently and with a bright smile, but there's just too many children present – plus, it would probably offend the astrophysicist's delicate sensibilities. ”Now, come on. Hot chocolate awaits!”

And so, off he goes.

After all, Martín del Mar is a man who always keeps his promises.

Mars’ pokémon are trained for discipline: to be fierce and fearless tools that answer to his every command without hesitation. The Unown, however, are the exception, because the reality of the matter is that the Unown aren’t really his pokémon at all.

He may put them in pokéballs, they may teleport to his side when he calls them, and they may aid him when he asks it of them, but in the end, they follow their own will: these are choices they make.

Just like this Unown-D had chosen to betray Father Winter to come to his side.

Cute but shy. The young woman he runs into when walking down Route 121, with her long blue hair and her pair of watchful pokémon, has the making of someone who is either not used to frequently interacting with people or who severely dislikes doing so.

”You think so?” Something zaps right past them at high speed: a playful Rotom that giggles silently. Dollar watches it with alert crimson eyes, and when Mars clicks his tongue, the Persian strikes. HIDDEN POWER is as mysterious as it is effective, taking down its target.

”A lot of ghosts come down here from Mount Pyre. Are you looking for any particular pokémon?”
