Another morning of jogging up one of Mount Pyre’s trails just as the sun begins to rise. The time when most ghosts go into hiding and mourners have not yet made it to the mountain’s graveyard. It's a quiet time. Perhaps even a time favoured by a few elusive little symbols…

Today, it’s one of his Eevee that keeps him company during his jog. Most particularly: the one that is offspring to a shadow pokémon and that happens to know some rather unique moves. Such is the reason why he wants to train this particular Eevee, of course.

As fate would have it, the corporate headquarters of Piazza Oro Grande Bank stand near the very heart of Slateport’s upper district, not all that far from Slateport University. Meaning that when @albrecht texts the CEO of such a financial institution, the response he receives is actually positive.

It also means that, once Mars has been made aware of the details of the situation, he can make a quick stop by the gardens of POG Bank’s main branch to retrieve the pokémon that helps keep them in the beautiful state for which they’re known and loved.

By the time he makes it to the campus, he’s still clad in his perfectly tailored business suit and cashmere topcoat. He doesn’t look prepared to do any sort of gardening. It’s also not his forte, after all, but he had helped Cillian Quinn with transplanting a crystabloom recently, and he also knows what to do. Plus, perched on his shoulder there’s the strangest little pokémon – a Shaymin in its Land Form.

”Surprised these survived out here, guess no students saw them yet. Good eye.” He comments when seeing the familiar luminescent flowers. The Shaymin sniffs the air, looking at Hazel.

”Hm?” Mars’ attention is also drawn to the Unown when the question is asked, and an honest chuckle escapes him there and then. He shrugs, nonchalant. ”Some do, some don’t. I find that all Unown have really unique personalities… This one has always liked walking more than most, but especially after I gave it this strange potion that made its ability change. I’d avoid touching it if I were you.”

After all, the Unown-X’s new ability is CURSED BODY, which while not particularly harmful, sure can cause discomfort. Mars had learned that the hard way.

The Unown-X pauses then, looking up and pointing at a Drifblim that floats by. Mars watches it too, considering for a second before releasing his Alolan Raichu. Unlike the symbol, this pokémon of his does indeed levitate – surfing through the air atop of its own tail.

All it takes is for Mars to whistle one short note and Notus attacks the Drifblim, taking it down with a precise ELECTRO BALL.

As if made of steel and thus immune to all poison, Mars is unfazed by kepler brueshaber’s glare. What is that… Anger? Hatred? Annoyance? Displeasure? Resentment? Clearly, whatever the answer might be, it just means that he hasn’t had enough to drink. Experience has taught Mars that that’s always the case with people who are not made for situations like these.

Mars himself has a lot of people he could talk to; he knows the names of just about every single person in the room. Most of them would gladly talk to him too. He knows who he could joke with, who he could laugh with, and who he should talk to for the sake of business connections and what not. Yet, for now, all of that is set aside. He sits next to Kepler as if he had been invited to do as much.

For the most part, Mount Pyre is as he has come to know it well: rocks, trees, graves, monuments, you name it. Today, however, there is one key difference; a dome-like formation has appeared near the peak of the mountain. A space-time distortion.

Dark purple clouds swirl up in the skies within the iridescent membrane that surrounds the rift, strange pokémon appear out of the blue, the air is heavy with static, and right next to an angelic statue, a blond man sits, watching it all. He seems unbothered by the chaos surrounding him; used to it, perhaps. He just watches as if he were waiting for something.

This man is Marcus Day. Tuesday, as many others know him. He’s a facade, a disguise, a mask and an ILLUSION cast by the diligent Zorua that sits by his side.

That’s all he says on that, because while their Riolu may just be one of the only things he and Isaac Merlo have in common, speaking of such things is not what they’re here for. It’s research for M.A.G.M.A. It’s ensuring that Rocket associates like Isaac are ready for what’s to come. This is why Mars has been giving him all this advice; he knows it will be needed soon enough.

Isaac’s question distracts Mars from all those thoughts, and it’s while running a hand through the shimmering scales of his Milotic that the underboss turns to look at him.

”Always prepare for the worst, Isaac. The League’s best are going to respond to our attacks, some may already be guarding the primal point to begin with, and among them a few own Ultra Beasts. Katherine Fairburne and her Nihilego are particularly difficult to deal with. You may have seen her in The Cloud.” He’s as serious as always, almost as if he were reproaching Isaac, yet when speaking of Katherine, there’s a note of respect that most people don’t get out of him. She may be Rocket’s enemy, but there’s clear esteem – he recognizes her strength, and that’s why he also knows how dangerous Katherine can be. ”There’s a chance you may face things like those in battle. If it happens, you have to know what to do.”

One last pokémon crosses their path just as they’re about to leave the Safari Zone: a Spinarak that hangs from a tree’s branch. They catch it in the act of swinging down to the ground, causing it to pause, and while it seems harmless, Mars’ instructions had been clear enough. ”I want you to fight every pokémon in our path,” he had said, and so, the Riolu looks up at him, expectantly.

Mars doesn’t even take a second to consider the possibility of letting the Spinarak be. He clicks his tongue, and of course, the Riolu responds to the command immediately.

It doesn’t make use of its more powerful attacks, perhaps in part out of exhaustion and in part because its instincts tell it they will do little against this opponent. What it does do is attempt to cut the spider with sharp METAL CLAWS.

Once the Spinarak can no longer fight, Mars throws his last Safari Ball.

”You did well today, Ajax.” Mars means it, and as if to prove that that is the case, a hand reaches down to pet the Riolu’s head for the first time ever. He only realizes what's he's doing when the dog looks at him in what looks to him like mild confusion. Still, Mars doesn't stop, letting it go on for a couple of seconds.

These are facts about his grandfather that he had learned on the very day they met, when he was no more than a boy – on the day his grandfather forced Mars to watch the murder of his own father, the man Emilio Marzán had once called his son-in-law.

He sighs, deeply. Shattered and bloodstained as the memories may be, his grandfather’s words are as if etched into his very being.

They’re not alike. Mars would never make someone pay for another’s mistakes. He would never harm someone just because of how much pain it would bring to another. Everyone is responsible for their own actions, and they must deal with the consequences. Such mentality is foundational to him.

”Oh, I agree completely. The League’s lack of discipline is part of what has led Hoenn to end up in this state.” Lack of discipline, lack of control, and lack of awareness. ”Some people just don’t seem capable of basic respect.”

It’s pitiful, really, and given that those are also among their underlings, it’s fucking upsetting.

Just as they make it near the peak of the mountain, his alarm tells him the inevitable: it’s time to go.

Yet, even if knowing as much, Mars pauses, looking at his surroundings. He knows this may be the last time he sees Mt Pyre like this: calm despite its eeriness.

”Fulgora, the next time we’re here you may have to fight.” He tells the Zeraora, paying little mind to whatever wild pokémon there may be nearby. In turn, Fulgora looks at him, giving a soft prusten and twitching its whiskers. Mars smirks, extending a fist towards the pokémon that has come to be one of his most loyal companions. ”Do me proud.”

As they have done since the day they met, they fist bump, as if this in itself were the seal on a promise.

Out of all the Hoennian branches of Piazza Oro Grande Bank, the one in Slateport’s upper district is by far the busiest one. With reason, of course, given its favourable location and the fact that it stands right beneath the bank’s own corporate headquarters. People come and go from the moment the doors first open every morning, and among them, so does the man that is both the public face and the mind behind P.O.G Bank itself.

Clad in a bespoke suit that has been tailored to perfection, Martín del Mar is as if a king in his own castle. He walks with the confidence of a man who owns the very floor on which he stands, his cashmere topcoat hangs over his shoulders as if the most elegant of cloaks, and by his side there’s the most majestic Persian.

But, see, the thing about Mars is that this is how he would act anywhere in the world, just like how he never lowers his guard even while standing at a place where his will rules above all.

Golden eyes wander over his surroundings, calmly studying familiar sighs, and when they fall upon a woman who is clearly waiting to hear about her loan, an eyebrow quirks just so slightly. No one would be able to tell why it is that the CEO of Piazza Oro Grande Bank decides to approach her then, but this is exactly what he does, and it’s with the most cordial smiles that he greets her there and then:
