The mention of Raphael Pryde’s Riolu project causes Mars to pause, bringing him thoughts of the one whose pokéball is currently clipped to his own belt. He too had considered asking if it would be alright for Ajax to stay with him, and perhaps even getting him a mega stone eventually. He smiles faintly, ever amused by how fond of the Riolu he has become while training it. Things like those are rare for him.

”And here I thought Doctor Pryde was usually against giving them names.” He teases. ”I have one of them too. I’m glad to hear things are going well with your subject.”

He listens to Isaac’s explanation about the aftereffects of using the Z-move, his attention remaining fixed on the Vespiquen. He doesn’t even flinch when the angered use of POWER GEM results in the pokémon harming itself.

”I see… You should train with her to ensure she’ll listen to your commands as best as possible even in this agitated state. That can make all the difference in battle. For now–…” He reaches for his belt, unclipping a minimised Luxury Ball. From it, an elegant Milotic is released, her golden scales shimmering beautifully under the fluorescent lights. She’s calm, as if in complete contrast with the Vespiquen. ”Erato, Naiad’s Nature.”

The contrast becomes even more obvious when the Milotic uses her own signature z-move, singing one melodious note while looking directly at the Vespiquen. Energy ripples through the room, ringing soothingly.

Milotic releases a wave of energy that calms the target, causing them to lose their desire to fight. any attempt to attack will result in the affected pokémon HARMING ITSELF instead. The effect lasts for a brief period of time.

”Power isn’t just about who can hit the hardest. If in battle you can stop even pokémon like Ultra Beasts and legendaries from attacking, it can make all the difference.” Mars looks at Isaac. ”She’s calm now. If you command her to attack, she’ll hurt herself instead of my Milotic.”

Mars actually nods approvingly when hearing Isaac’s comment, perhaps for the first time since they’ve met. Internally, he hopes that most of Team Rocket has done the same. Isaac may believe that this power will keep his pokémon safe, and that much may just be true, but it will also make them into the powerful tools he needs to succeed in the battlefield that awaits him.

”Do you have any pokémon that can mega evolve? Legendaries, Ultra Beasts, and all of those are powerful, but any pokémon can be strong if you train them well.” There’s a faint smirk. ”Z-Moves, megas, unique moves and genetics… MAGMA exists to help you learn to use them to the best extent.”

Manipulation of Anomalies for General and Military Application. It’s in the name. A Z-Move by itself has power, but learning to use the right Z-Move at the right moment, timing it with a mega evolution so the Pokémon is at its strongest when using it, taking advantage of all circumstances… Those things need to be learned. Mars has never believed in attacking blindly; he will always favour strategy above all else.

It’s why while he sees the power in the Z-Move, he also sees its potential flaws. He stands his ground, watching the ray of light that seems to almost shake the entirety of the building. Definitely powerful. He’s sure the readings will reflect that too.

Mars does indeed know of the keen senses of pokémon, but he’s not particularly bothered by Razz’s explanation. It’s probably what’s expected of a ranger, isn’t it? To go around educating people so that they help the environment? Mars wouldn’t be surprised if lines like those are written in their little ranger manuals to be practised in front of a mirror.

The sudden appearance of a Klank interrupts their conversation, but Mars does no more than whistle for his Eelektross to attack from the water. Another FLAMETHROWER is all it takes.

Preparations for Team Rocket’s expedition to 99943 METENO are underway, and it’s apparently all hands on deck. Each and every one of their scientists has been called to aid in whatever way suits them best, and apparently, that means that for now, the submarine’s laboratories lie completely empty.

Yet the M.A.G.M.A Division’s work also never ends, and terribly busy as Mars is, he doesn’t have the time to reschedule today’s appointment. It’s just collecting a few samples, so might as well do it himself. How hard could it be, right? He had been given the basic instructions (likely because the poor lab assistant wouldn’t have wanted to say “no” to an underboss), but just in case things get unexpectedly difficult to handle, he had also recruited the help of one of Team Rocket’s trusted Beasts.

In order to further our understanding of the phenomenon referred to as TERASTELLIZATION, we have attempted to utilize a Z-MOVE on a TOXTRICITY while the Pokémon is TERASTELLIZED and determine the move's effectiveness, given that Z-MOVES appear to have no effect on TERASTAL CRYSTALS and cannot be used by TERASTELLIZED POKÉMON.

The Z-Move NAIAD'S NATURE affected the subject to its full extent, causing it to lose its interest in the battle and to harm itself when attempting to attack. Damage was caused to the TERASTAL CRYSTAL coating the subject's body, despite the fact that in prevoous trials, the energy from Z-CRYSTALS has had no effect on TERASTAL CRYSTALS. All footage has been annexed.

Due to these results, it has been determined that TERASTELLIZATION PREVENTS THE POKÉMON FROM INTERACTING WITH WORMHOLE RADIATION IN ORDER TO PRODUCE Z-MOVES, BUT IT CAN STILL BE AFFECTED BY THEM. If another Pokémon were to use a Z-MOVE on a TERASTELLIZED subject, this Z-MOVE would work as intended.

The Unown chirps, but instead of commanding it to attack, Mars releases his glowing Illumina Dragapult. One click of his tongue and DRAGON DARTS swiftly deal with the wild pokémon.

Whether it’s a joke or not is left up in the air, but of course, anyone who knows him would know Martín del Mar thinks himself to be perfect despite anything anyone might point out as a flaw.

He thinks BARNABY FINCH to be perfect too, but that is a thought he does not voice while preparing to dock the sailboat. Perfect even if he’s not the best sailor out there just yet. There will be no capsizing this ship.

”Not sure anyone is capable of capsizing a sailboat when the wind is this mild. I’d call it an achievement.” He smirks, although he definitely does not let go of the helm. ”Maybe I’ll let you try it with a different sailboat, though. You can help with the spring lines.”

Thankfully, docking all on his own isn’t at all difficult, especially given that there are no other boats at their destination. A beautiful tropical island – paradisiac. The thought crosses Mars’ mind of how he wishes things here are nothing alike the last time they found themselves together at an island. As much as he’d like to return to the Cloud someday, he sure as hell needs a break.

The mention of Coumarine brings memories for Mars as well, although his aren’t really of the city itself. It makes him think of Kalos; of Ambrette Town and of days spent at sea with his father. The memories are a blur. They’re fragmented, disorganised, and bloodstained. If only for a second, he frowns, trying not to think of the things that had led those memories to be in such a state.

”Coumarine, huh? I’ve visited a few times, though I like the southern Kalosian beaches much better.” He smiles as if nothing, wrapping an arm around Barnaby when he leans in closer. He barely pays attention to Barnaby’s Rotom phone, nor to the way his own wakes for its slumber.

Mars does no more than stare at Barnaby, a smile lingering at his lips. It’s the same dynamic as usual, isn’t it? The way it has been with them ever since they met. Just as they both like it.

”Hmmmm… Not sure if it can be done on the spot, but I’ll see what I can do.” He winks, ever one to keep the mystery going for the sole sake of teasing Barnaby.

Sadly, their conversation finds itself interrupted by a Bastiodon, and along with it, a Boldoro soon rises from among the rocks.

Mars whistles, causing the Zeraora to rush towards the rock type and a hit it with a POWER-UP PUNCH... and then another.
