Aromatherapy.

Mars can imagine. He can put the pieces together based on the secrets they’ve told one another. The scent of roses brings him discomfort to this day, and as a child he had always seen it as something to be cautious of. Roses had meant that she was near. It’s why he doesn’t ask for the exact reason why Gavin dislikes Aromatherapy, he won’t force him to speak of it, but he does ask one simple thing:

Admittedly, he does think it to be a shame. The move can be useful to those who find its scent to be soothing. Natalia had taught him to love flowers and their language, but even if that rings true, the scent of some of them often reminds him of things he’d rather not remember.

”Both.” The answer comes after a pause. He has never admitted to it before. Not to the tampering, at least. As for how young he was… for most of his life he had been prevented from speaking the truth of it.

Nothing stops him now, for not even the usual barrier that is distrust exists when speaking to the man by his side.

”...They killed him when I was six or seven or so. Made me forget most things about him over the years.”

Life in Hoenn is full of unknowables in ways far beyond what most of the world would expect. It can condition those who inhabit the region to set aside feelings of both incredulity and wonderment. As Mars sees it: it would be foolish to believe anything to truly be impossible when Hoenn has proven otherwise time and again.

However, despite this latent expectation that anything might indeed happen, there are certain things that sometimes manage to surprise even the most prepared, and on this day, the sight of the Unown-E he had thought to be dead emerging unharmed is one of them. Is it that their mysterious opponent had never intended to harm the Unown to begin with or is it a comment on the symbol’s own indifference towards mortality? It could be either, and admittedly, the latter is something Mars had never considered.

Can Unown really die?

Is this the same Unown-E he had known?
[break][break]
What had this pokémon done to it?
[break][break]
The psychic beast regains its form, battered and burned, yet even in its weakened state it’s capable of raising a barrier to protect itself. He can do no more than watch it flee, and as he does so, he comes to a single conclusion: this pokémon will likely cause a whole lot of problems and it’s too powerful to be left unchecked.

For now, it escapes, and the Unown watch it go as well.

Ever since the barrier appeared around Hoenn, the region’s weather has shifted. Warm fronts and cold fronts alike have been blocked away and kept at bay when coming from faraway, making it so that temperatures at the usually tropical region are – for the most part – mild at best. Yet, this barrier that Maldacena had claimed the Dark Triad placed around Hoenn to isolate it in space does not stop the passing of time, and on this earlier October day, autumn’s mark is clear in the heights of Mt. Pyre.

An OMINOUS WIND likely raised by one of the countless ghosts that call the summit their home shakes trees and carries away leaves that had been close to falling, and sitting on a rock, it’s while smoking a cigarette that Mars watches them.

This in itself is a rare sight. Martín del Mar smoking? Dressed for a hike instead of in one of his signature suits?
[break][break]
Some things aren’t as unusual, though. Such as the fact that there’s an Unown standing by his side today.

A smirk flashes there and then, sharp as the edge of a knife, yet jokes can only do so much to lighten the atmosphere, and the words spoken by Gavin are heavy with implications and pain alike.

Mars understands.

He may love the sea, he may associate it with some of his happiest memories, it may be where he feels the most comfortable and safe, but Mars knows what it’s like to dread something because of terrible childhood experiences. Throughout his life, there are one too many things he has dreaded.

”It’s rose gardens for me, if you’d believe that.” The comment is spoken while casting his line, and it’s only after the fishing rod is set properly on the gunwale’s holder that Mars looks at Gavin one more time. ”I’m sorry your dad made you hate the sea.”

He is.

Especially because it’s something that matters so much to him.

”Mine used to take me sailing. I barely remember all of that, though.”

The memories are distant and bloodstained, but mostly importantly, they are shattered – incomplete.

It’s not the first time Mars has been told as much. He remembers how the same comment was passingly made back during the Splashfest.

"My dad tried to teach me, but it was never my thing."

Back then, Mars had noticed the subtle shift in Gavin’s demeanour, and even without knowing the details, he had realised that there was unspoken depth and darkness to that story. He had chosen to draw attention to himself and change the topic back then, but this time, he merely adjusts his fishing rod’s line before setting it down again.

”Ugh. Honestly, fishing in Galar on its own sounds like a fucking nightmare.”
[break][break]
Galarian weather itself tends to be too grim for these kinds of activities, but Mars mostly means it as a joke. His demeanour is nonchalant and he still smiles, even when he goes back to the starboard wheel for the sake of leading the sailboat to a stop.

”Did he make you go fishing with him, then?”
[break][break]
A question asked calmly, while looking at the control panel.

This had been his own father’s thing, but his experience with it had clearly been much different from Gavin's. It's a shame, really.

He used to go on sailing trips a lot, that is, but this last year it would seem as if he has progressively had less and less time for it. After Necrozma’s attack, after becoming underboss, and especially after everything that had happened within The Cloud… He has no time for it at all now. The only reason he had gone sailing for his birthday was because he had promised BARNABY FINCH that they would make the trip. He’s glad they did.

Mars himself grabs himself a spritzer, smiling faintly at the fizzing sound that comes when he opens the can. There’s beer, a few other bottles and cans meant to be kept cool, and even non-alcoholic beverages, but Mars rarely indulges in the latter. Too much sugar for his taste.

”It really isn’t your thing, huh?” He means the sea. He means sailing and fishing. ”Not that I’m surprised, considering I had to tell you how to put together a fishing rod way back when.”

A memory that feels distant now.

There’s a smirk, but Mars is also quick to push past teasing, turning his attention to inspecting his own fishing rod after setting the can down.

The blunt, harsh, and honest response gets a laugh out of Mars, because it’s exactly what he had expected Gavin to say at that moment. He had heard the implication before when they passingly spoke of childhood days during their trip fishing with BARNABY FINCH and Tempest Quinn for the Slateport Splashfest. Most importantly, he had seen it; seen it in the way Gavin looks at the ocean that now surrounds them.

There is an irony in the fact that the avatar of the Guardian of the Seas dislikes the very thing Lugia is meant to protect, and Mars is sure this is something that doesn’t escape Gavin himself. He doesn’t speak of it. He simply allows the wind to carry away the sound of his laughter, and within seconds, once it’s gone, a smile lingers.

”Yeah, I figured you’d say that.”

In a way, knowing that Gavin would agree to coming on a trip like this with him despite disliking the sea means a lot to him. In another, it makes him concerned for his friend’s wellbeing. After all, aren’t they supposed to enjoy this? Mars has always found sailing to be relaxing.

”Want a drink?” He nods towards the cooler that’s on deck, and he’s also not oblivious to the fact that it’s the middle of the day.

Elisabeth speaks of something so foreign to him, so different from the way he thinks, that even in this day that is so full of thoughts of pain, lost love, and grief, Mars finds himself to be amused by it. He will always fight, and that may just be the fatal flaw that one day spells his demise. Even if it does, he will die living true to who he has always been.

Mars wouldn’t usually give much thought to his own mortality, but on this day he’s painfully aware of it.

”Take things for what they are, hm?” He offers her a smile before his attention turns to the flowers, looking at them for a long moment. A petal is stroked with affection – as if this miniscule thing were cherished and precious. ”She would have found that beautiful… poetic, even. It would have made her like you.”

Natalia had taught him to see beauty even in some of the most terrible things about this world. She had seen it all for what it was, never allowing herself to be deceived, and yet she had somehow loved this life that had been so cruel to them. She had taught him to love again. She had taught him happiness.

Every single day, Mars reminds himself of this for the sake of her memory.

He can’t go back to who he was just because she’s not here with him.
[break][break]
She wouldn’t want that for him.

”When we were children, she dubbed me Mars.” The smile is still there as he looks at the flowers, the memory one fond yet bittersweet. He holds the stem of one between two fingers. ”She said I never stop picking fights, that I will challenge anything that goes against my will and make a battle out of even the smallest of things. That I see life as my war to win.”

He looks at Elisabeth once more, and right there, his smirk is faint, barely there, yet somehow still as sharp as the edge of a knife.

”She said that it’s the best thing about me.”

That was who Natalia was. Someone who was so often amused by other people and loved them for what they were.

Mars had expected to end up having to take the role of mediator at one point or another, because while both Cillian Quinn and Killian Decker are undeniably both people who he’s fond of and who matter to him a great deal, he also knows that that’s not a feeling the other two underbosses have towards each other. Quite the contrary.

”Tell that to Deoxys.” He smirks in response to Killian’s comment about how little alcohol he has consumed, but it would seem as if Deoxys has already gotten sick of dealing with all of this.

All room for arguments is gone, as is that for talk of love and weddings. All of it is replaced with the gruesome sight of the extraterrestrial creature leaving Killian’s body.

Mars gives Gavin a look then, cautious of Deoxys’ intentions, but when it just stands there, he sighs in turn, raising his glass towards his friend’s patron.

”Hey, Deoxys.”

Another sip of gin is taken, because he sure needs it. Still, beneath his calm, he’s as alert as ever.

Is it because he has come to love this place? There are other places where he could search for Unown, other places where he has encountered them before, yet it’s always the eerie mountain that seems to call his name.

There is no discomfort in this place filled with so much death. There is no fear in knowing that ghostly creatures lurk all around him. There has never been, not really, but Mars has admittedly grown much fonder of the mount than what he ever expected himself to.

As stubborn, proud, and utterly difficult as the Braviary may be at times, he can’t deny he’s more fond of Boreas than of most of his pokémon – that he trusts him more.
