The faint signs of Gavin’s anger are not missed, nor are they particularly surprising. He too is angered by it, but mostly of all, sickened. Sickened that these memories have such a hold on them. Sickened that these people managed to affect him so deeply that their actions created fear within him. It’s one of the many things they’ve done to him that Mars will never forgive. He’ll never forgive them for anything.

The way his line tenses comes as a welcome distraction this time. A hand is placed on the reel to stop its spinning, and after a short moment, a Blue-Striped Basculin is pulled out of the water. Mars stands to release it, but when he does so, he finds himself staring at the sea for a moment.

He had questioned some of them before. He had made them suffer for the sake of getting every single drop of truth out of them. He had, however, been focused on other matters. Rage and grief had consumed him, and nothing had mattered more than learning about what they had done to his wife and son.

There’s no way of asking those questions now, so it’s better not to think about that.

”Nah, not roses, but the smell always makes me uneasy.” He has never really spoken of it; of all the things Catalina Marzán has caused him to dread despite how harmless they might seem. Gavin says he doesn’t have to tell him his fears, and he wouldn’t under most circumstances, but when Mars looks at the vast ocean all around them, he remembers the deep vulnerability that exists in knowing what can bring terror to another.

Being vulnerable doesn’t suit him. His mind resists it, but with a sigh, the words are spoken while watching the sea:

Is it his greatest fear, though? Greater than the fear of once again losing the ones he loves? Greater than that of being truly and completely alone? No, but those things are different, and truth be told, the latter is one he may just be unaware of.

Some people would perhaps claim that men as evil, twisted, and fucked up as they supposedly are don’t deserve the peace of mind that their incomplete memories bring, but just as Mars had told Gavin over drinks on a recent night, there’s never any true peace.

He obviously doesn’t expect a verbal response from the Unown. Most of the time they don’t even make a single sound. Today, however, it gives him a long look, and when it turns to gaze at their surroundings, the long and curved part of its body extends to make it look as if it were an exclamation mark.

At that very moment, it’s as if the world around it shifts, and instead of the Unown-?, next to Mars stands a small tree… with a familiar half-lidded eye on its trunk. It reminds him of how things were created from nothingness within The Cloud. It reminds him of the very abilities he himself acquired after returning from that digital realm.

”...What are you doing?”

He doesn’t need to ask. He doesn’t need to turn in the direction the Unown is facing. He can see it through the symbol’s eye: a wild Metang.
