There's a caw coming from a nearby tree, and it’s calmly that Odysseus turns in its direction, his gaze fixing on a Murkrow. When Mars turns to look at it too, he considers their options for a short moment.

The command is given with a click of his tongue, and an ICE BEAM is shot accordingly. A moment later, the bird falls to the ground – frozen.

The irony of it all is that the presence of a tree that is not really a tree seems to attract the presence of another pretender… Or, is a Trevenant a tree that has been possessed by a ghost?

Mars isn’t particularly versed in ghost pokémon lore and quite frankly, he just doesn’t care enough about most of them to learn more. There are some exceptions, though. For example: the Dragapult he then releases from a Luxury Ball.

Xanthos is as happy as ever, wagging his tail like an excited puppy who wants to play.

Less messy. He can see the appeal botany may have for some, he may even be fond of certain flowers and the complexities of the language surrounding them, but all the dirt and soil and everything else… it’s not for him. Especially not on the days when it reminds him of his grandmother’s garden.

He laughs at that, reminded of one particular woman who once complained to them about a lack of scented candles due to the supply shortage. There’s not a day when Mars is not thankful for having had the foresight to stock up before things went south, but that doesn’t change the fact that dealing with all the issues caused by the barrier has become one of their primary jobs.

It’s part of why Mars had decided they both needed a break like this one.

He understands and he truly does appreciate it. He could tell Gavin as much, yes, but Mars is of the opinion that too much sentimentality all at once doesn’t suit either of them at all, so it’s easier to just tell a joke. After all, it’s his day off and he’s determined to enjoy this fishing trip of theirs, even if they do end up talking about things that aren’t at all enjoyable…

The last time Mars had done anything even remotely related to gardening had been when he had taken care of a patch of Gracideas planted near the smuggling facility he had forcefully taken from Sinnoh’s syndicate. Flowers of gratitude. It had all been rather cathartic.

This, however, is different.

Crystablooms are beautiful and so is this scene, that much is true, but it’s still a beautiful flower growing against all odds in a place that has endured too much suffering. There probably won’t be more like it in quite some time. It’s why they should help it – especially considering how useful Crystablooms can be.

”Been a while since I’ve done any gardening.” He comments jokingly after grabbing the extra gear. Does it really count as gardening if it is a rare bioluminescent plant growing in a barren land? ”Has the lab had any success growing these?”

Being one of the M.A.G.M.A Division’s directors, Mars has a certain level of awareness of all of the research sector’s projects, but given that it’s not usually his own focus, he counts on Gavin to be much more informed than he is – especially when Blackstone Labs is concerned.

There’s a part of Mars that wishes his younger self had had someone like Cillian Quinn in his life to tell him words like those. To remind him that he had been just a child and that his mother’s death hadn’t been his fault. For the longest of times, he had blamed himself for both his parents’ passing. He knows better these days, just as he knows that wishing for things like those is futile and that the past cannot be changed.

He doesn’t need to hear it, but he appreciates the sentiment all the same.

The question of if he’d bring anyone to Ambrette with him catches him off guard, and for a second, Mars pauses to consider. He looks up at the sky, feeling the warm of the sunlight on his skin and smiling faintly at the gentle ocean wind. He thinks of BARNABY FINCH and of all the things he wishes they could tell each other. He thinks of how one day, in the distant future, he’d like to show him Ambrette. The first time he returns, though? That one will hurt.

”Why? Are you asking me to be your tour guide?” When Mars looks at Gavin again, his usual playful and confident smirk has returned. ”Sure I can show you Ambrette, but I’m not enduring hours at the fossil lab.”

There’s something poetic about it, beautiful even; that despite the almost complete lack of the energy supposed to sustain it, this single Crystabloom bud could rise in the barren lands left behind by Necrozma.

The memory of the night of the attack usually brings nothing but anger to him, and yet right now, while watching Gavin work, there is something different. Sootopolis can persist too; just like this flower.

”Shame it’s just a remnant. What’s the plan, then?Taking it to the lab and helping it grow?”

He knows there’s a lot left to be discovered about the strange luminescent flowers, but most of all, their hearts are in demand these days due to being a key component in Sygna suits. Mars is yet to get one of his own, and he’s still not sure what pokémon he’d even choose.

This time, he’s the one who’s angry. This time, he’s the one who feels the flames of his rage burning within. Emilio Marzán had shackled Mars’ very existence, had hurt him in a myriad of ways, and had taken everything he ever loved away from him, but his wife? The woman who is supposed to be Mars’ loving grandmother? She is a different kind of monster.

”No.” There’s something cold and harsh about the way denial is spoken, but that’s not Gavin’s fault. They had not killed his mother. In fact, she may have been the only other person they ever truly loved. ”She was sickly most of her life. As far as I know, her condition got worse after I was born.”

In the end, it’s not a rarity for their work to continue late into the night. Usually, it’d be at the offices, but fieldwork is also no rarity for either of them. This, however? This is different. This is special. This feels like a remnant from a bygone era.

”Yeah. Boreas did.” He nods towards the sky where the Braviary flies, the azure flames of its mask being the most clear sign of its presence in the night. That and the warlike screech that cuts through the air when its name is spoken.

Mars’ attention returns to the bud, glancing at Gavin by his side.

”What does it mean, though? I thought there wasn’t enough Infinity Energy left for Crystablooms to grow.”

They have become a rarity in all of Hoenn, but especially in Sootopolis. This shouldn’t be possible. They could always benefit from a new energy spike, but Mars has never been much of an optimist.

It’s only because he had been looking at him that Mars notices the fire that passingly overtakes Gavin’s gaze. So much for pulling him away from his anger. There must have been a clear trigger, something mentioned that sparked a memory, but since Gavin doesn’t make mention of it, Mars also chooses to move on from the subject.

Instead his gaze fixes on the sea. On the sight that makes him think of his father, of Ambrette, and of bits and pieces of memories made aboard a sailboat much different from this. He had been happy back then. Happy and foolishly innocent.

He nods in confirmation to Gavin’s assumption.

”When my mum died. I was only a few months old… Wanted me to have a better life, I guess.”
[break][break]
He can only guess, that’s the worst part of all. He’ll never know his father’s true motivations, his reasons, nor his goal. He’ll never know anything about the one person that had given up everything for him and him alone.

”It’s why they killed him.”
[break][break]

”This is what happens when you betray our family, Martín.”

To this day, he still remembers how his grandfather had looked at him back then. He still remembers what had been said and the sound of the shot being fired. That much they had never made him forget – quite the opposite, actually.

It shines in the darkness: faint, weak, barely there, and yet still noticeable due to the nothingness that surrounds it. A nothingness that had been the only reason why the black-feathered Braviary that circles overhead had managed to notice it to begin with – the bird itself also being barely visible in the night sky of Sootopolis. It watches over him.

Months ago, during a similar night, Mars and his Braviary had stood at this very spot and defended the dozens of Crystablooms growing near the roots of the Tree of Life while Raphael Pryde collected samples.
[break][break]
The Tree of Life is now gone, as are most of the Crystablooms, but against all odds, in this place that has been drained of most Infinity Energy by Necrozma, a single one of these blooms rises – no more than a miniscule bud.
[break][break]
Mars stares down at it, not bothering with disguises because of how late it is. No one comes near this place this late anyway. Except, of course, for the fact that he needs at least one other person here to decide what to do about this bud and what its presence might imply. Mars may be interested in science, but this is not his expertise. The choice is obvious, so a text is sent along with a picture:
