they landed the magikarp splash, finally, and she was grinning as delta clapped excitedly at the shoreline. she could have wrapped up there and gone home, but instead, she took the next wave, trying for one last success at the magikarp splash.

it was amazing at first. it brought a smile to her face. and then, they were getting a little far away for her comfort. she started to frown, eventually, concern beginning to pinch her brows and narrow green eyes.

“… wait, seriously?”

her gaze snapped towards matias with a frantic quickness. surely he was joking.

lunch was finished, and they placed the cloth wraps back in a bag. soon enough, she saw one of the floats dip into the water. jumping up, sure enough the line pulled straight to the culprit.

she took it off the side of the boat and began to wrestle it in through the waves.

there was time enough for a couple more tries, before grabbing dinner from a booth and making the long trip home.

she would stick to the same trick, because why not? there was no chance anymore to catch up with the competition, and she'd never really been worried about it anyways.

the familiar command left her lips before they headed up the next wave.

the lyrics of teravolt were rebellious in her ears, playing back on the speakers as she left in the other direction.

the feeling they inspired in her was a reminder of her inner conflict, and the rage and need for vengeance that pulled on her in one direction, for right or wrong. as many times as she’d been told to leave war behind for her daughter, she harbored resentment. defiance. her purpose had always been to fight for the greater good. to leave that purpose behind for another felt too selfish. it felt like a betrayal to the spirits of her dead unit. it felt utterly wrong.

delta would perhaps grow up too quickly. the latchkey kid of a single parent, left to discover much of the world herself in these days as more time passed from their run-in with KING WAYLAND . despite criticisms, like Sénon Game ’s, sage would not shirk the duties she had already once left behind. she would not be tamed to raise the one to perfection while abandoning her promise to raise up the whole. she would do her best at both, and if it wasn’t good enough… at least she could say she tried.

though large, sagira quickly determined that the horsea was not an impressive enough specimen to bring in for the competition. after reeling it in, it was quickly released back to the water. her line was cast back out, rod secured before she went to continue her lunch.

a z-crystal was a great find, although she hoped she would never have to actually use it. if she did, she would be prepared.

another crown was won with the last trick. she had three more tries before the event was over. though the changes were slim, she decided to pursue the magikarp splash for the rest of it.

over the water they sped, building momentum on their way up a wave before flipping through the air fantastically--and hopefully in the right way.

"watch her, please."

after handing her daughter off to a friend, sage had run in the direction of the spacetime distortion. they hadn’t been anywhere near the loud, screeching guitars and wild crowd, but now, she was obligated to be there.

mounted atop her zarude, they knocked aside several angry distortion pokémon as they sped through. jungle healing glowed green across the ground to anyone nearby who might needed it. soon enough, once the distortion had faded, she slid off her monkey, boots thudding on trampled ground.

she watched up at the playback of dahlia goode ’s speech. it seemed so dystopian replaying over the scene of the predictably disrupted concert. this region seemed hopeless. she had felt this before kanto had been taken over. whether before or after the meteor—if they made it—she could feel a war approaching. she was ready.

another failure didn't deter her from pulling herself up and trying again. surely, after so many attempts, she was going to be better at this trick the next time around.

urging her mantine up towards the top of the wave, she commanded, "again. starmie 720!"

she was determined to at least make it to the 4000 point crown, and if they succeeded, there was still a slim chance to get another.

incense. she could never have enough of it, she just hoped it wasn't ruined by having been in the ocean. picking it up, she swam to the surface to unload her finds before diving back down again.

this time, she released her starmie, which spun across the sand to the next piece of submerged treasure. its red light flashed brightly to indicate its find.
