WINTER WONDERLAND

FLUFFY SNOWFLAKES FLOAT LAZILY IN THE AIR, blanketing the ground in brilliant white. Your breath fogs in the chilly winter air, and you can feel your nose begin to redden from the cold. This is still Hoenn... right?[break][break]

After last year's success the snowboy showdown has become an annual event! Unstable conditions in Hoenn have made it even easier to manipulate the weather and create a perfect winter wonderland to host the contest. This year, the Ranger PR team, lead by luka chêne with assistance from Audric Black, have organized the festivities into a more formal event.[break][break]

Fairy lights decorate the frost covered trees, softly illuminating the continuously falling snow. The snowy fields on Route 119 now boast an ice rink, food and drink stalls, and a small holiday market. All proceeds are to benefit your local, hardworking Rangers! Come in and join the festivities with fellow Hoennians, or simply build a snowboy and collect your prize.[break][break][break][break]

PERFECT SNOWBOY

Last year's snowboy contest returns, with a slight twist! The esteemed Darmanitan judges have returned— experts who view each and every snowball with a discerning eye. Can you create a snowboy good enough to impress them?

In this mega-thread, your character can interact with others and play around in the snow while they attempt to create the perfect snowboy! Characters that succeed will be able to redeem a special prize, including two grand prize winners at the end.[break][break][break][break]

RULES:

Include a roll at the bottom of each post to craft a part of your snowboy. You must obtain all four parts in order to make one perfectly and claim your reward!

SNOWBOY SABOTAGE:

As a new mechanic this year, players may use their snowboy parts to sabotage another player. This sabotage can occur icly or oocly. Tag the person you want to sabotage, and make sure to remove a snowboy part from your inventory. It is recommended that you use extra snowboy parts that you may have rolled, but not mandatory![break][break]

If your character is struck by a sabotage, you must remove a snowboy part of your choosing from your inventory. You must then reroll that piece to complete your snowboy properly![break][break]

Luka falls to the earth unscathed, but alone.[break][break]

Her prayers have gone unanswered once again and though she can't say she's surprised, bitter disappointment still churns in the pit of her stomach. It's ridiculous. It's selfish. And yet, even though she should be grateful that she's survived and blessing the earth she walks on, all she can dwell on is her own petty loneliness and regrets.[break][break]

At least she still has enough manners to thank kim cole-essam's hoopa, giving the giant hand a little high-five in thanks when it releases her.[break][break]

In the few moments of silence granted to them, Luka stares up at the sky and wonders what this was all for. They'd saved Hoenn, but at what cost? Was Sea!Hoenn now facing the same fate they'd just avoided? Had they truly doomed the rest of the universe through their actions? Though Luka had come on this mission to try and find a better way to solve things, they'd played out just the way they were intended. She hadn't changed anything. And that feeling of helplessness, of powerlessness burns even more deeply than the loneliness.[break][break]

The back of her eyes burn, but there's no time to wallow in self pity. For just as Luka finally picks herself up and recalls Jam, the threadbare seams in their reality tear open.[break][break]

Yellow eyes and stalactite teeth glint out at them from the rift. Luka stumbles back instinctively as the great maw opens and a burst of freezing air rushes forth; a chill so deep it would make her bones ache, could she feel it. It's a creature from another world, a titan of ice and frost.[break][break]

And just as suddenly as it appears, she remembers entries in the log books that she'd poured over ever since her journey into the Cloud:[break][break]

She remembers the Growlithe half encased in ice and paxton concordas's poor Golem, who'd fallen victim to it. The museum curator's words echo:[break][break]

"Once you make contact with GLACIATE ICE there’s no turning back."

Luka's eyes widen as ice and frost begin to cover the field. Frantically, she switches on her comms and practically screams at her allies:[break][break]

"That stuff is...i-it's called Glaciate ice! Don't let your Pokemon touch it! They'll be trapped forever...o-or might even die!"[break][break]

And if this Pokemon gets through, the entire region might be covered in it. Luka inhales shakily, shivering even though her spacesuit insulates her from the cold. She doesn't have a legendary by her side, doesn't have much in the way of brains or brawn. All she has is herself and the few trusted companions that would follow her anywhere. Her family. That'll have to be enough. Luka steels herself, grits her teeth, and throws two pokeballs into the fray.[break][break]

"Cupcake, use protect! We need some cover!" A shield from the cold for herself and anyone nearby. Behind the protective barrier stands Helios, alert and ready for the command he knows is inevitable.[break][break]

The mega stone around his wrist begins to glow. Luka's keystone shines with the same flame-bright hue as she presses her lips to it, activating Helios' mega evolution.[break][break]

"Flare Blitz!" Luka shouts, but it's unnecessary. Her father's Blaziken is already racing ahead, a mere streak of fire and trailing embers as he rushes the Kyurem head-on. Before clawed feet can meet the ice crawling across the ground he leaps into the air, a comet made of scorching flame aimed right at the oncoming storm.[break][break]

As Helios' powerful attack makes contact, Luka makes a move towards the reckless. Before her lies a flower encased in the nevermeltice, perfectly preserved in eternal bloom. Counting on her Clefable's protect and the insulation from her spacesuit, she attempts to pluck it from the ground for one of the League's scientists to study. If the museum's curator could control such a volatile substance, why can't they?

Luka watches with bated breath as a chunk of the meteor breaks off and turns to dust in the air. Though she's grateful for kyle lopez's idea and all the help they'd gotten, she's worried it might not be enough. She can only pray that perhaps sea!Hoenn has their own measures in place for such a disaster.[break][break]

In fact...if their universe is all water, shouldn't that help mitigate damage from the meteor? Luka doesn't know much about science or physics but that sounds right to her. It's enough, at least, for the bubble of hope in her chest to grow a bit larger.[break][break]

"One minute until firing. Get out of there now!"

The bubble pops.[break][break]

It occurs to Luka only now that she should have brought a flying type. With their ship destroyed, there's no way for her to get back down to earth. As others quickly leap onto their mounts or find other ways to escape she stays put, rooted in place and far too fearful to jump on her own.[break][break]

As she hesitates, her Blaziken comes charging behind her. With one smooth motion he picks her up and hurls her off of the meteor like a ragdoll. She screams, tries to grab hold of the receding meteor to keep herself from plummeting to her doom, but it vanishes right before her eyes.[break][break]

So much happens after that. The primal points have fired. Rayquaza passes in a blur and the mineral vein explodes, but she hardly notices amidst the struggle of trying not to fall to her death. One of the broken shards whizzes by, it's sharp edge scratching the glass on the front of her helmet. Luka reaches out quickly to try and catch it, fingers closing around either dazzling stone, or empty air.[break][break]

Though in the grand scheme of things, a trinket like that is hardly important. Because shard or no, she's still falling. With some difficulty Luka manages to fumble for the pokeballs around her waist, recalling Helios and exchanging him for her Poipole. The little alien isn't large enough for her to fly on, but at least they'll be home amongst the stars and might know what to do.[break][break]

They don't.[break][break]

Jam screeches in concern and tries to lift her up, but their tiny body just isn't enough to keep the pair of them suspended. A protect is cast to try and keep her from pancaking, but at this distance it's likely not enough to save her. But the ultra beast refuses to give up, tugging on her arms, trying to keep their trainer suspended in the air as long as possible.[break][break]

Her joints start to swiftly ache, but Luka doesn't stop them. She can feel herself slowing though, at least a little— or perhaps it's all in her head. Regardless, with no other options Luka stares down at the rapidly rising Hoenn, and her eyes widen as the universe unravels right before them.[break][break]

The implications of such an event don't hit her yet. It's too cosmically vast for her to comprehend. Instead, Luka peers into the shifting kaleidoscope of universes, searching for anything familiar— a crescent shaped pond, or a shrine bathed in moonlight. She wants so desperately to find the place she'd gone to with Martín del Mar, but how is she supposed to know which unfolding reality is the correct one? Could she even access it if she found it?[break][break]

Though her plea had gone unanswered before, Luka tries once again. This time there's a true desperation to her voice as she clings to the lunar wing and tries to reach out to the Cresselia she had met before, so agonizingly close as the fabric between their realities disintegrates.[break][break]

"Please help us," she begs at first. And then, in a moment of uncharacteristic selfishness, she asks: "Please, help me. If not now, a-at least tell me how to find you again!"[break][break]

She squeezes her eyes shut and freefalls towards the earth, her fate lying solely in the hands of one deity or another— whichever feels benevolent enough to save a nobody like her.

Cute. Ohhh, she and annalise henderson look so cute! There's no time to really go through every picture she'd taken, but Luka's sure there's a few winners amongst them.[break][break]

"Mhm! I'll send it over tonight!" she promises. "And if they really do pay us in treasure, I'll treat you to lunch!"[break][break]

The vow is sealed with a wink and another sunny smile before Luka flounces off and prepares for her own dive. Since she's not the strongest swimmer, she's counting on her Dragonair to help guide her under the waves. The serpentine Pokemon enters the sea with nary a splash, patiently waiting for Luka to put on her equipment and clamber onto her back. Though Luka struggles with her BCD for a moment she eventually gets the hang of it, and the pair slips below the waves along with the rest of the group.[break][break]

Immediately they're plunged into a breathtaking world of blues and greens. Sunlight streams in from overhead, turning the water gold right near the surface. Luka gazes, enraptured by the sight of the colorful corals and cute water types that swim into view as their team dives deeper and deeper. She gets why some might be frightened of the deep ocean but in this moment, she can't see it as anything but beautiful.[break][break]

Unfortunately, her reverie can't last long. It's Sakeru who alerts her to danger first; the dragon's body tenses as she senses the incoming threat. Soon enough schools of defensives fishies come straight at their group, teeth bared as they launch a barrage of swift attacks.[break][break]

Sakeru ducks and weaves in the water, avoiding oncoming pin missles and trying to keep her trainer safe. But avoidance isn't enough— they need to keep the excavation team from getting hurt as well![break][break]

Though her Dragonair is perfectly capable of taking on the danger, Luka sends her Primarina out to assist. Under the water, her Primarina's scales glow even more brilliantly than on the surface. The illumina phenomenon is gorgeous beneath the waves— glittering pinks and blues are woven in intricate patterns around her tail and her pearls glow opalescent.[break][break]

Her dazzling appearance manages to draw the eye of several attacking pokemon. Primarina uses this to her advantage, using sing on her captive audience to lull them into a harmless sleep. The melodic song travels even further underwater; perhaps even some of the agitated corsola in team one's location might hear it and be calmed.[break][break]

Her nimble dodging pays off, and Luka survives the Deoxys' attack relatively unscathed. She breaths a sigh of relief from her spot behind the destroyed ship, happy to see that her teammates are all faring about as well as they could hope to.[break][break]

Luka takes a moment to catch her breath and stare out at the expanse of space and infinite sea of stars around them. It's beautiful, truly. She wishes she could see more of it under better circumstances.[break][break]

It only takes a few seconds for her to break from her reverie, however. Fighting explodes around her once again while some go after Deoxys, and others attack Dr. Holo. Caught between the two options, Luka freezes.[break][break]

She hates the League plan. She hates warping the meteor into Sea!Hoenn and condemning an entire planet to the fate that their region is trying to avoid. And she can't evade the soul-crushing guilt she feels knowing that, should their universe survive, they might one day cause the end of the world.[break][break]

It's very tempting, suddenly, to leap to the woman's aid. If Holo is left to her devices, perhaps the meteor will fail to warp and the League's plan will fail. The implications are dire, and it's very selfish for Luka to want to inflict her martyrdom onto an entire region...even though that's the whole reason she'd chosen to come to the meteor in the first place.[break][break]

But looking down at that expanse of blue and the sprawling greenery of Hoenn, she can't help but feel a pang of regret for the home left far behind her. Her time in Hoenn has been bittersweet, full of love and loss and heartbreak. It's easy enough to say she'd be willing to give her life to save another's, but to sacrifice everyone she's come to know and adore over the year is far more difficult.[break][break]

It's enough to give her pause and reconsider her dangerous line of thinking. But in the midst of all her confusion, doubt, and the chaos around her, kyle lopez's voice rings clear over the comms. And it lifts her spirits to realize that, even amidst all this strife and chaos, others haven't lost hope or compassion. They haven't given up the way she almost had. If there's a chance to mitigate the damage this meteor might do to Sea!Hoenn, even if it's a long shot, she's determined to take it.[break][break]

"I understand, Monsieur Lopez!" Luka says into her comms, and breaks away from the of the group. What she's planning to do might be silly, and it's definitely reckless, and she doesn't want anyone else getting caught up in it.[break][break]

As she runs, her Blaziken bursts from his luxury ball and races alongside her. The energy seeping from the mineral vein crystalizes atop his head like with so many others; this particular crown glitters like rich ore pulled from deep within the earth. He cries out, but not in alarm. If anything, his blue eyes seem sharper, more determined, and each long stride seems more powerful as he sprints towards a proper vantage point.[break][break]

"Helios! Use earthquake!"[break][break]

Imbued with the power of earth, Helios stomps a single foot onto the ground. There's a small tremor, then a quake as fissures spiderweb from the place where he'd struck, his powerful attack meant to help the meteor chip away into nothing.[break][break]

While the meteor rumbles beneath her feet, Luka grabs hold of her spacesuit just above her heart, where the Lunar Wing rests. Her eyes squeeze shut as she whispers a single prayer to the deity who'd once lifted the moon back into the sky— a desperate, and likely fruitless hope that she might be able to do the same for them.[break][break]

Parfait is not having a good time.[break][break]

Chatot fly around her head, cawing and screeching out curse words in various levels of profanity. Parfait's trainer never swears, so the Hatterene had learned quite a few new words today. And she hates all of them on principle.[break][break]

Though the oddly cooing cries she makes are unintelligible to human ears, the message in them is clear:[break][break]

Your vibes are atrocious.[break][break]

And since none of them want to listen to her, Parfait chooses violence instead.[break][break]

Her clawed appendage arcs through the air, plucking naughty Chatot out of the sky while they squawk and struggle and call her all manner of names. Once she's nabbed enough of them, she carts them off to an enclosed part of the sanctuary— the naughty corner.[break][break]

That's right, birdies! Sit and stew in time-out for a while. Anytime one of them tries to misbehave and curse again, a sharp look and vaguely threatening aura from Parfait sets them straight.[break][break]

Luka listens to those in charge with rapt attention.[break][break]

It's important, after all, for her to get every detail right. Though not officially a Ranger expedition, many big names and newer recruits are involved. That makes it a perfect opportunity for a little marketing! Exciting exploration, unearthing cool artifacts...it's just the kind of thing that might get a few fresh faces interested in ranger work![break][break]

The contest starlet waves at paxton concordas when he finishes his bit, grinning wide at her neighbor. It's nice to see him in a situation like this— he's flourishing! At least, it's a far cry better than hearing him doing heavens knows what at three am through their shared wall.[break][break]

Once the debrief is over Luka wanders the crowd a moment, taking stock of familiar faces while she waits to have her team assigned. She waves and gives a quick hello to both illeana reyes and Eva Morales, a little bummed that they seem to be on different teams. Her lips purse as she pulls the cloth band over her forearm (orange, yuck), but understands that her place is better in the support ranks than on the front lines.[break][break]

With a little skip in her step, she keeps an eye out for fellow teammates! annalise henderson catches her eye first and she flits over to the other woman, her long ponytails flashing gold under the afternoon sun.[break][break]

"Madame Henderson!" she chirps, "It's good to see you again!" Given the events of their last encounter, she can't help but giggle. "I can't believe they're getting us in swimsuits without raising money."[break][break]

More laughter is carried away on the sea breeze while she pulls out her phone. "Hey, hey! Can we take a quick selfie though? For the fans!"[break][break]

MIDNIGHT MUSEUM [NEN]

Ugh.[break][break]

The music is still playing and her head is reeling. In the breakroom, the source of the perish song is louder and more oppressive, and it makes it easy for Luka to miss more obvious clues.[break][break]

But the music box sitting atop a desk does catch her eye. For a moment she just stares at it, out of place amongst the mundane paperwork and pens that cover the desktop. Such a pretty, delicate thing...and yet it has a foreboding aura about it. Somehow, without even having to hear the tune, Luka knows this is what they've been looking for.[break][break]

Finding it doesn't solve the problem with the intercom though. And strangely, the music doesn't seem to be coming from the box himself. But Eris Halla takes that problem into her own hands, easily coming up with a simple- though reckless- solution.[break][break]

Luka manages to snatch up the music box and jump backwards just before Reiner zaps the intercom. The hissing of static and smell of burnt plastic hopefully indicate that the girl's plan had worked, and the song will stop.[break][break]

"Be careful, Mademoiselle!" she says anyways...because that's what a responsible adult should do, right? But Eris had already done it, so her warning is rather superfluous. Still, she tries to keep one eye on the younger, and one eye on the intercom, just in case frying it has caused any other problems.[break][break]

For a blessed moment it's quiet, and she finally has a moment to think. And she realizes now that picking up the cursed little box may not have been a good idea— the already dark and oppressive aura in the room seems to close in around her. The air feels thicker...is that a chill, or just a shiver running up her spine?[break][break]

Teeth worry her bottom lip as Luka sends out her Spheal, this time checking to see if the change in temperature is real, or just the result of her own paranoid mind. In the meantime, she continues to poke around the room and puzzle as to the meaning of the trinket in her hands.[break][break]

Wondering if it might do anything, she takes the box over to the rotom voicebox that had spoken to them earlier. If the ghost has anything else to tell them, perhaps the box might jog their memory? It's the only thing Luka can think of to help them figure out exactly what this specter is.[break][break]

The haunting melody plays back at her. Luka shivers again and closes the lid with a snap, then waits to see if anything might happen.[break][break]

John Sullivan's scream is thrown right back in his face when the two collide.[break][break]

For a moment she's sure she's been ensnared by the plant monster, but the John Sullivan only has two arms, no creepy vine tentacles, and he isn't oozing saliva. Yay![break][break]

But just running into another person doesn't mean she's out of the woods yet.[break][break]

"Hi," she echoes hesitantly. And then, forgoing propriety, Luka reaches out and grabs Doug's cheeks, pinching them the way a grandmother might. The flesh beneath her fingertips is warm and yielding and definitely human, not a weird plant monster thing. With a nod of satisfaction, she lets him go.[break][break]

"Sorry! I just wanted to...check, y'know?" Nervous laugher floats from her lips but it's quickly snuffed out by the oppressive gloom of the haunted house.[break][break]

Luka glances nervously around them, but there doesn't seem to be any immediate signs of danger yet. What she does notice is heaps of what seems to be trampled greenery stretching out in front of them. Vines are bent and twisted, stems snapped, petals ground into paste on the floor.[break][break]

Optimistically, Luka wants to hope that it's a path created by another explorer. Maybe it's someone who found the way out! She gestures towards the trail and motions her head towards Doug, indicating that they should try and follow it.[break][break]

"W-we should probably keep moving," she suggests, already starting to follow the path formed by crushed and wilting roses. "Um...can we stay together? Safety in numbers, a-and all that."[break][break]

For a moment, Luka feels a pang of satisfaction. The mineral doesn't chip, and her attempts at defense seem to have actually worked. But this isn't cause for gloating or celebration. It's important, she reminds herself, to stay on her guard— Rocket isn't the only enemy they have to contend against.[break][break]

angelo vestri confirms the appearance of the dark triad, and Luka can only hope that Elaine Highland's yelling into the comms means that she's managed to escape from one of the assassins. As things stand, there's no way she can try to help the other woman.[break][break]

There's not even time to think about it, really. For right above the meteor comes a flash of light and a deafening burst of sound. Luka only has a moment to flinch and duck as a Minior explodes nearby, and despite her attempts to flee she's caught within the radius of the blast.[break][break]

The force sends her flying back, protected only by the reinforced spacesuit leant to her by the League. Her ears are ringing and pain ricochets around her skull as she falls into space rock and rubble, tossed aside like a limp ragdoll. She can only hope that her shouts of surprise and pain haven't registered over the comms radio as well.[break][break]

Her vision is spotted and her head pounds, but at least her survival instinct is still intact. Luka manages to pick herself up after a few seconds, wincing

Ume is battered and bruised, only floating a few inches off the ground. The damage around them is immense, and her fellow Leaguers have taken the brunt of it. Luka curls her arms around her wounded tapir and pulls them to safety, releasing her Clefable instead. "Cupcake!" she shouts, her usual kindness replaced by urgency, "Use life dew!"[break][break]

A torrent of healing rain showers down on the group impacted by the explosion; at least, those in close proximity. If they're lucky, it should help to heal SHEBA INOUE, angelo vestri, skyler dross, and Sénon Game, along with herself.[break][break]

And the life dew continues to fall, Luka runs. She can see the Deoxys emerging out of her periphery and figures that, yeah, she absolutely needs to get out of the way. Several other Leaguers have the same idea, sprinting to safety behind kyle lopez's downed ship.[break][break]

Is there enough room for her behind it? She can only hope so as she dives for cover, praying that it'll be enough to protect herself and the group from the incoming meteor beam.[break][break]

Her wounded Musharna is returned, as is her Clefable once life dew does it's work. She doesn't want to risk any of her precious partners getting hurt! Though in the shuffle of love balls one slips through the cracks— her shadow togepi manages to burst out, stubborn little thing that she is. In the face of danger, her shadow luck ability activates, sealing the fate of one unfortunate victim.
