Paxton is about to spit off the usual spiel before he remembered he was off the clock, permanently. He hadn't worked for the precinct in over a year but he still felt the urge to grab at something from his waist. He summons Joules instead. The shiny Magnezone beeps, all their eyes looking rapidly in different directions before locking onto Lulu Flint and the Hypno. [break][break]

"Landon Cassidy. Who're you?" he asked, glaring at the woman before lurching forward to keep ana fell from what he thought was collapsing on the ground. "Hey! hey, hey, hey, wake up!" he hissed before she continued forward. [break][break]

He snaps his glare back to Lulu. "What are you doing to her?" [break][break]

"Repel a giant whale's primal tantrums?" Paxton asked, arching an eyebrow as he saw the yellow beacons Kyogre had for eyes disappear under the waves. Hopefully, Gunner Graves 's Wailord was ok. His ear piece comms to life. They're dropping the speaker, and blasting Groudon's call. [break][break]

The sky flashes with light from the Iron Valiant, and Paxton waits for both whales to resurface. Thunder and lightning crash down as the Kyogre resurfaces, letting out an angry war cry and turning its soul sucking, bright yellow eyes out to sea once more. Even leaving, it causes chaos, moving so quickly the sea rises and falls around it. The rain keeps pouring in sheets. Paxton is soaked through his wet weather gear but at least with wet hair it's easier to slick back and keep out of his face. He sees Gunner's Raichu and he sees Arber as well, blasting wave after wave of MAGICAL LEAF to make Dewford's shore as unappealing as she can. The blooms that still glow on the rough seas adding their healing power to the pokemon in direct combat. [break][break]

With less need for defense, Joules swaps to offense as well, adding her own fire power as she floated above the humans and began to fire up a massive ZAP CANNON against the beast, hoping to continue encouraging it to leave. Irritated as it may be, it's overtaken by its urges to respond to Groudon's challenge, somewhere in the middle of the ocean. Kyogre is taunted, lured away from Dewford with intermittent blasting of Groudon in the water, but it's rain storm continues a bit after its gone. [break][break]

"What the fuck happened to it?" he said in disbelief. All he knew from dahlia goode 's report was...something had corrupted the BLUE ORB? He mulled over how that was possible. Eventually Joules hovers above him, acting as a pseudo umbrella. "Thanks, bud." he said before the dual type beeped twice in response. [break][break]

He turned to Navy after a moment of silence, enjoying the respite of the rain now that the threat was gone. "Hopefully, your beach tide isn't fucked for too long." he said, looking at the mess of ice and ocean debris left unnaturally deep into the shore. "Maybe you'll find something worth your while. Just need a metal detector." Joules imitates one, and he snorts.

As the group theorizes, he tenses as PENELOPE LIVY leaned in closer and drew his attention to the avatar, turning with disbelief and then immediate irritation towards Isaac Merlo . "Always." is all he managed to say back, trying to stay level headed at the idea of babysitting again. [break][break]

"Joules." he summoned the Magnezone as Hopper kept an eye on the Hoopa, trying to blast away fists as they appeared. "Blow that shit up." he ordered, as the Magnezone powered itself up, beeping decisively as it floated over the group of Leaguer's and pulled an ELECTRIC TERRAIN to boost themselves up. Seeing the Magnezone and Porygon working so hard, a small pony slows next to their group offering a HELPING HAND to the pokemon before galloping away to continue assisting others. After a few moment, Joules' magnets whirr with renewed energy and cutting through thee snow is Joules' ZAP CANON aimed directly at Naomi Sato 's crystal bubble that lay so out of place on the battle field.

He nodded along as the redhead spoke, finishing off his tea as he prepared to escort her out. He waved a hand at her. "No need, I can speak to someone in your chain. Call it job training. An exception since we worked together before I fully moved over to Evergrande." he said with a snort. He could ask ollie morales about it since he would be training her. It was just more self defense than anything else. [break][break]

"I'll CC you on the email, and then we can figure out when they'll release you to me." he said as he lead her out of his office. She looked better, but he knew it wouldn't solve everything. [break][break]

He carefully gives her a light pat on her shoulder as he waved her off. "Feel free to email me if you have anymore questions. He nodded along politely. "Well, that's why the council staff people to help smooth over transitions of power." he said lightly as he clicked his pen and turned the page on a legal pad he'd brought with him. He nodded along as he dated his sheet before looking back over at Freya and taking a moment to think.

He runs through a roster of current initiatives before picking out one he and PENELOPE LIVY had discussed beforehand a while back. "If we're talking about programs that are active at the moment, PROJECT SAPPHIRE could use a little bit of rework. If it shows no improvements within the year, and we don't garner support form the rest of the council, I believe it's structured to be dissolved." [break][break]

"Currently, the project is stalling after putting a majority of it's focus on legendary tracking." he said with a shrug. "Of course, it's very hard to show progress or provide results when all I have is rangers and trainers going off into the wild with minimal leads trying to track down the untrackable." he said with a small sigh. "I admit, perhaps our department lagged on implementing a bit more structure, so I've been writing up a proposal to take to FERNANDO SILPH and the rest of the council to see if I can get a little more time before the initiative is dissolved." He's silent, reading over his scribbled out scratch pad of a document, before making a couple of notes on paper and figuring out how to best articulate his main points. "It needs a narrowed scope for now, more specific goals. illeana reyes mentioned to me she and Eva Morales were pursuing some new research, and I asked them to collaborate to have a more focused angle in the science corps for SAPPHIRE. Something more than just venturing out into the wild and risking personnel and wasting time." [break][break]

"Similarly, we could refine our approach for viable volunteers. I think we've lagged on outreach in that regard. But the Ranger corps has a fine tradition of mentorship I still admire. It would be an excellent opportunity to push people towards the gym circuit and train a better force to defend the League as a whole." he takes a pause as he remembers Genevieve Cromwell . "I think...a closer relationship like this would be an easy way to gage hopeful gym challengers, and good way to see if they even want to fight for the League." He taps on his tablet sighing through his nose. "I've encountered an increasing number of trainers and rangers who don't seem prepared for battle, mentally or physically."

Paxton tasted blood and heard the ringing before he fully registered what he was looking at. One second he's glaring up at Gunner, the next he's staring sideways at the hallowed grounds they'd come to watch, eyes wide in disbelief. He hadn't flinched on it. Whether it was because he fully believed Gunner wouldn't hurt him, or because he didn't see Gunner move is up in the air. Flecks of red spit dot the cheek opposite of impact. The only thing that had come from it a sudden grunt before he had opened his mouth to say something else. [break][break]

He held his already swelling cheek with one hand, looking at Gunner in confusion and disbelief. No anger, or disgust just utter confusion. As his brain caught up with what had happened, his eyebrows scrunch together and he straightens up once more despite the pain. [break][break]

Paxton's eyes grow cold, an emotion that runs so deep so suddenly. He feels cold. All the vitriol and acidity from before disappearing and replaced with a strange stillness that threatened to break at any second. A tension he held onto with increasing effort as his shoulders shook. [break][break]

His voice is hoarse, throat tight just like every other muscle in his body right now. "You're. The Asshole, Graves." he snarls his name, not even giving him the relief of using his first name with the familiarity from before. His eyes shine, brimming with emotion under disheveled bangs. He spits out a glob of red on the ground between them. "Good to know where your priorities lie, Agent." he said, tone shifting into something more level and professional. The same distant tone he took on with strangers he may liaison at work. "I'm heading back first." [break][break]

He turns without a word, and began to walk off, calling out his Porygon to help TELEPORT back to his own office.

"That's good, at least." If anything came from this it was that Hideo didn't have to go through all the trauma of battle at once. He takes a moment of silence for those he lost on the field today and nodded. "Yeah, me too." He wished he hadn't, but they were trained, much like him, to put the mission first. Rare had been the instances that he and Joules deviated from their objectives. [break][break]

"Oh..." Paxton replied, turning from staring straight ahead to looking back at the gym leader. "Don't be too harsh on it." he said, veering gently over the rationalization. "I don't doubt it was inevitable. Either it got killed, or you did." he said. [break][break]

He takes a deep breath and then sighs. Hideos' question is kind of nuanced after all. His feelings aorund death and killing blur when you consider the target. As unbiased- as disciplined as he strived to be...he's just a man. Put the mission first. The greater good of Hoenn, of the League, of the people he was protecting. The hunger for vengeance and the numb exhaustion that came after ever blood spatter after a something as simple as a trigger squeeze. The bruises on his chest from where his rifle sits are permanent. Palkia may have gifted him a new body, but the shadow pains of his rifle were beyond physical, engraved into his psyche like he was born with it. [break][break]

And in a way, hadn't he been reborn after Kanto? Rebirth did not have to mean better. But he had cobbled the pieces of himself back together, lessons learned and people lost. This was the best he had to offer. [break][break]

"I won't feel guilt for not wanting to die. And I won't fault my pokemon for feeling the same way." he said, careful with his words around a child. "I go to therapy every 2 weeks. I keep a routine. I paint and I bake." Anything to keep busy, stave away the static that plagued his mind. "Rocket isn't something I want to save, it's a disease to burn. And not everyone can do that job. But I can- I have. I just don't think about it anymore." It's what kept him from jumping off the edge. From chasing down the ghosts of his past and trying to find whoever had hurt him- hurt his family. Rocket is just too big. But eventually he'd find them. If he aimed to wipe them out, it was inevitable.

Ollie doesn't have a lot of shame to him. So when the Darumaka is gone he simply moves on, climbing a snow covered boulder and using the perch to scout the area. "Careful you might sl-" Paxton is cut off as he sees the boulder move and yawned, almost knocking off the kitten. A napping Cetoddle had just woken up thanks to him and his cat. Though, too groggy to be mad about it, it seemed. Paxton moves in to grab his cat, and give Ollie a small boost onto his shoulders. He holds on tight while Paxton caught the Cetoddle turning her attention to him semi tired but beginning to tilt her head. Just in case, he slaps the last pokeball on her nose and watches her disappear. "No more risks Ollie. None." he said wit ha small sigh.

Ollie sniffs at the ice and snow, semi packed on what seemed like a trail already padded out by other trainers and pokemon. The snow here is a little compact and brown. Paxton scoops up his cat so he doesn't dirty his paw pads too much. But as he goes to scoop the cat up, the MEowth launches himself forward seeing a snow pile blink before shrieking and running away. A galarian Darumaka waddles away quickly, trying to avoid the meowing cat. "Ollie! Wait-!" he shouted as the cat hounded the poor ice type into a tree. As he skidded to a stop to sniff the poor Darumaka, Paxton tossed a pokeball. "Oh shoot, ok ok, we'll get you a pokemon center little buddy." he said apologetically.

Ollie paws at the spot where the Staryu disappeared ,sad they were gone while Paxton knelt down to give him a good scratch. "C'mon, still got a little time left." he said as he ushered the cat away. AAs they move, a quiet Burmy hides from the pair. They don't seem to notice, looking more at their feet than up at the barren branches were the little bug type may stand out a bit more.

As Ollie brought back his pokeball, Paxton scooped up cat and ball. The kitten snuggled into his neck, meowing happily as Paxton readied a different one. As the trekked through thick snow, following a dug out path, a Staryu twirls across their way, ignoring them. Ollie perks up with interest and Paxton nodded, tossing a pokeball at the Staryu as it began to leave.

Ollie meows, perking up at a Delibird runs past him. Without warning the kitten pounces on the struggling Delibird who squawks indignantly at being caught form whatever business it had. "Ollie! Nice one!" Paxton said, turning to toss a pokeball at the Delibird.

"Eveyone alright?!" Paxton asked as the ground stabilized. As much as it could under Kyurem's PRESSURE and the giant shattering of earth and ice. "Get an scape plan ready in case the ground starts to give out." he reminded, though a large part of their forces were in the sky anyway.

"Elise Calcifet ," he snapped as the ranger stepped a little too closely into the absolute shit storm that was whatever went on between PENELOPE LIVY and MATIAS SILPH , "Focus on our crisis, not what your superiors are arguing about." His tone is short as he summons his next pokemon. He puts a hand on illeana reyes 's shoulder, trying to ground her. "Any signs it's happening now?" he asked, looking over at her check in.

Hopper chirped in his ear, robotic and chipper as they began to power up and join in. Feeling a strange boost of energy from the terrain set before them, it began sending off volleys of TRI ATTACK. He turns to Gunner Graves , giving him a once over as he reports back in to their boss before turning back to Hopper as it beeped and chirped status updates, mostly how it seemed fine.

“Lucky us, Necrozma solved it. In a way.” Paxton said dryly. They'd been fucked more than once on the crystalbloom front. Maybe they powered sygna suits but he considered it all a side effect. They'd been serendipitously lucky in the end. He shrugged. One problem gone, and another in its place. A leaky ship they’re all desperately trying to keep above water. The conversation changed back to his weapon of choice. “Oh, uh, year. I carry it around on my back. I…set up really high in different places with my Porygon.” he said, adjusting the strap on his shoulder awkwardly. “I started out as a scout back in Kanto.” he said and letting it die there. [break][break]

“Yeah, no scrapes on you but how’s your pokemon?” Paxton asked, carefully breaching the subject. He’d lost his own amongst the fray. Hee doesn’t expect Hideo’s next question. [break][break]

His first instinct is to lie, but Hideo had been a comrade. As much as he disliked it, he was on the field with him. He was a gym leader. And he’d been sitting in this tent for a while. Paxton didn’t need to say anything for him to know people had been lost. Pokemon even more so. [break][break]

“Yeah. It’s why I’m still alive.” It’s hard to say he enjoyed it. He’s not- doesn’t feel bloodthirsty. Every death at his hands felt less and less enjoyable. Rocket was a large, changing organization with so many moving parts. To end them felt like a duty he could carry because his hands already had blood on them from Kanto. He supposed it’s because they’re all just puppets going through the consequences of their actions. They’re not…them. The people that burnt his family home and held him down to cut his throat open. Those specific people, if they were still alive, he’d probably felt different about killing. But he’s not saying that to Hideo. “Some of my pokemon died taking shots meant for me. I break they pokeballs and remember them.” [break][break]
