[break][break] growing in the heart of castelia city seems like a great childhood, but if you don't have money, it's not so wonderful.[break][break]from a young age, izzy was well aware of two things: the first, that he and his family had very little in comparison to the other kids he knew, and the second, that every extra penny that wasn't used for food or rent would go to his sister. she was smart and kind, older than him by only just a year - supposed to be the only one. they couldn't afford a second kid, he'd heard his parents say drunkenly after dinner, somedays wondered what it would be like if it were just us and jola. it didn't surprise him much after the fifth time, and it stopped hurting so much after the tenth.[break][break] she could dance, arceus could she dance - never seemed to put on any weight no matter how much she ate, and the kind of tenacity that warms itself well to ballet. she could make money, the family knew, and so everything went to the dancing - to training, to travel, to competitions, to outfits. mum bought t-shirts with jola's name on them to wear in the audience before she would remember a gift for izzy's birthday. it didn't hurt on the outside - he grew tough to make up for that, he made sure.[break][break] he knew he wanted to move out early - after years of squatting and lingering down the alleys that people didn't go to often. he learnt how to steal and how to cause trouble, and how to do it all without getting caught. it was little things here and there, to afford clothes he wanted outside of thrift stores, and all that - but to move out? to find a place, to not just live in a tent or some big city's gutter? that took money money. joining team rocket didn't seem like the most awful thing in the world, all things considered. it wasn't as if he'd have to kill anyone or anything, and if it meant they could help him with money to move out, keep bills paid for a while, then let him dive out once everything was paid off... that seemed easy, in fact.[break][break] it's a blur now, when he looks back. things happened that needed to happen, money was exchanged, he moved to hoenn - team rocket got what they wanted, izzy did too, the deed was done. but... life costs money the whole time you live it, izzy realised. bills don't just go away once you've paid off the first few, and with everything he received, the debt grew bigger. it was soul crushing, but he needed it - couldn't go home, definitely couldn't admit to anyone his own stupid mistake, and so when old rocket fell, it was a blessing, right? surely, with the debt forgotten and the noose around his neck gone, he could live a real life. maybe get an internship or an apprenticeship somewhere, start building a real life.[break][break] ...but it felt so wrong, being alone. he was good at the tasks he was sent to do and however much it made his skin crawl, it gave him a purpose, something to be talented at, his dance. who would have blamed him, then, for limping back to team rocket like a kicked dog, as it rose from the old ashes? besides himself, that is.
