”Oh!” Her glossy lips do indeed make a perfect “o”, coming as a result of the appearance of the huge Heatran. Pokémon have always been fascinating to Ceri, it’s part of why she had chosen this profession of hers, and out of all pokémon, nothing intrigues her more than the rare ones about which not much is known.

”You have some fun pokémon, Fernando.” She praises, even though that’s exactly what is to be expected from a man like him, and then, when he responds to her with a question, Ceri can do no more than look up at him.

Is FERNANDO SILPH really the sort of person to say nonsensical things? He sure doesn’t seem like it.

At first, she just blinks, surprised, but within seconds, the sounds of light laughter bubbles up, rising in the air.

”Nope.” She immediately responds then, grinning. And then, admittance comes with a wink. ”That really doesn’t make much sense, does it? To be honest, that was just the first garden path sentence that came to mind. I wanted to see how you’d respond… Like a Turing test, sort of.”

Ceri turns to her left, covering a sneeze. Nothing against the little girl and her fluffy companion, but cats and the scientist’s immune system just don’t agree. Oh well, at least her allergies aren’t all that bad. It could be much worse. She can deal with it.

And, she can specially deal with it for a fluffy cat that apparently had been blessed by Enamorus.

”Oh! Springtide Storm, right? I had a look at another pokémon that had been blessed by Enamorus recently.” She winks at Eris, russet gaze then falling upon the Luxray and back to its short trainer. ”How about we start with your friend Reiner here, then? I just need to weigh him, get a few readings, easy as can be! I even have a few treats for him.”

Shaymin, though? Melmetal? Those pokémon intrigue her for sure. All too well does she remember meeting FERNANDO SILPH’s Shaymin, and according to the data she has collected, Melmetal has some intriguing qualities.

Shame they only have so much time today. Ceri is a busy woman, after all. Priorities are required and samples from other subjects might have to wait.

Maybe Ceri is not exactly the best of friends.

She tries to find the will within her to stop Nomi, to tell her this is dangerous and that it's a decision she’ll eventually come to regret, but when she does so, she finds that the words aren’t there and nor are such sentiments. It’s dangerous, yes, but it’s exciting as well – an incredible opportunity that has opened countless doors for her, allowing her to do things she would have never even thought possible as a simple student. As for regrets? There are many things in this life Ceri does regret, but joining Team Rocket is not one of them.

”Nah, don’t apologise… I want to help. I bet the higher ups have access to files about all that, and there’s people we can ask like Doct–.”

Regardless, Ceri realises she’s getting ahead of herself, and ultimately Nomi is right: it’s best not to keep discussing Team Rocket in such a place. The thought causes her to chuckle, knowing well there’s no way in hell either of them can focus on their paper with all this in their heads.

”Okay, let’s figure this paper out and then we can chat!... Maybe get a drink or two, think we might need those.”

Considering everything she hasn’t told Nomi, it’ll probably be more than two.

Still, Ceri laughs lightly, and in doing so, she hears the distant shushing of a librarian. That only makes her giggle more, of course. Funny, isn't it? How even someone like this can be a criminal.

Nomi’s response is not what Ceri expects it to be. She has every right to be angry at her, to be hurt, to be sickened by the thought of someone she trusted so much working for an organisation that has caused so much strife. Ceri has never cared about Team Rocket’s goals, nor about their actions, but she’s not foolish enough to act oblivious to the truth about her employers, and she’s all too familiar with the reputation they have among the civilians of Hoenn.

Nomi, however, asks her if they’re hiring and in doing so she achieves what not many people can do: she genuinely surprises Ceri Glynn.

Thoughts of Cillian Quinn come to mind, of Lulu Flint, even of her dreaded cousin Remiel Calcifet. Rocket can always use more recruits, but above all else, in her opinion, they can always use more capable scientists. That has always been the aspect of Rocket that matters to Ceri. The only one that does.

She’s four margaritas in by the time she makes her way to the swimsuit contest’s location for the sake of watching the finale, and it sure makes it all be all that more fun. The performances that have a comedic twist to them end up being fucking hilarious, the ones from people she considers to be attractive are wolf whistling-worthy, and the ones that are too serious and boring for her taste get booing out of her. Viruses, much like parasites, just get a bad rap, and to someone like Ceri, that’s really fucking sad. Then again, she gets it, since a lot of viruses do some really messed up (albeit it also really fucking cool) things to their hosts, but come on, do people always have to expect the worst? That’s just so boring.

”Well… We’re working on developing treatment and prevention methods as a precaution, but the Pokérus is just like any other virus: it’s not something you just get rid of with a magic little pill.”

She could explain the intricacies of it all, but surely even someone like Bee has been sick before, no? And anyone who has been sick knows that, in the end, as much as things like antivirals may help, in the end fighting off an illness is their body’s job. That of the immune system. How long does Pokérus remain in the body? Given that no adverse effects have been recorded as of yet, Ceri can’t help but find herself to be infinitely curious about such matters.

”Nothing we’ve found so far indicates that Pokérus harms its hosts, Bee. She’s fine.” Ceri adds then for the sake of some reassurance, giving him a slight smile before heading into the testing area. Equipment is used to record the use of SPRINGTIDE STORM and measure the energy produced, and through it all, she watches in utter awe.

Bee’s sudden concern over his pokémon’s wellbeing makes Ceri pause in the middle of collecting a blood sample, her warm russet eyes fixing on him. After all the times he had visited this lab, having brought her pokémon who also carry the virus, she had not expected him to worry about the diagnosis. But, he does. Is it a matter of favouritism? Ugh, men.

”To be totally honest, we don’t really know much about the virus. That’s why we’re studying it.” Is her immediate answer to the question of it being life-threatening, her attention returning to carefully removing the needle and applying light pressure with a gauze to facilitate clot formation. Her tone is calm and steady, but she doesn’t sound particularly grim or worried.

”She’ll be fine, though.” Ceri adds then when going to put the samples away, a slight smile being shot Bee’s way. ”It’s known to be a mutualistic virus. That basically means that it benefits the host. A lot of pokémon born with Pokérus-Y grow faster, evolving much sooner than what would be expected. But, since your Bijou is already fully grown, you don’t have to worry about that! If I were to take a stab in the dark, this Enamorus may have passed the virus onto her when giving her its blessing.”

It’s the most logical assumption to make, but at the moment, there’s no particular proof of it being a fact. For now, at least.

”Okay! Let’s look at that move… Maybe I’ll take some samples from it too. See if it transmits the virus or so on.”

Can Pokérus be airborne? What if they were to modify it to have more adverse effects? Weaponize it. It’s an interesting thought, one she’ll remember to share with Elisabeth Fiorelli later on.

Of course Ceri has heard of Eris Halla before, because when there’s a literal child running around the Rocket submarine, people are bound to talk. She had not expected, however, that said child would be one of the people who’d provide samples from the unusual pokémon for the M.A.G.M.A Division’s research sector, and it sure makes her wonder how and why someone so young is in possession of such rare specimens.

But, curious as she may be, that’s none of her business and nor is it her problem.

Her priority here is the pokémon itself and what she may learn from it, so she has readied everything to make sure the kid’s appointment at her lab goes smoothly. The equipment is on the table and there’s even a few lollipops for Eris.

Will she arrive with a chaperone? Ceri kind of hopes so, but regardless, when the door opens, she greets Eris with the brightest smile of all.

”Hey hey! How’s it going? Ready to do some science?” She grins, energetic as ever.

”So I’ve heard!” She had heard. Of course she had, considering the number of Team Rocket members that had apparently taken on the Fleur Tea Atelier’s challenge. ”I never had a chance to study one of the pokémon involved until now, though.”

How had this “Enamorus” changed Bee’s Bijou? Why had it done it? Based on descriptions, it would seem as if it might be one of the least known “deities”. Fascinating.

”Looks like she’s infected with Pokérus-Y, and I imagine that probably wasn’t the case before your tearoom adventures, huh?” After getting a look at the test results, she notes that on the tablet. ”We should probably move to a testing room and get energy readings for this ‘Springtide Storm’ move once I’m done with collecting samples. For all we know, it could be something similar in nature to Light of Ruin.”

She had theorised that some hatchery pokémon had been born knowing such a move due to the Infinity Energy surge a few months back, as well as due to the combination of Pokérus-Y and Illumina genes. However, theories are not facts.

The sample collection process goes relatively quickly this time, perhaps because this is no cantankerous shadow gene pokémon or scared Meowth.

As has been quite well established already, Ceri doesn’t have a particular interest in neither cats nor dogs. The same can be said about vulpines, of course, but that is quite different when they’re unique pokémon with unexpected genetics or abilities.

Does the Ninetales’ appearance make her nose itch, forcing her to hold back a sneeze? Yes, it does. Does it also fill her with the giddy excitement of a child during Christmas morning, making her positively beam? Absolutely.

”Oh, you’re beautiful.” The scientist tells the fox, who no doubt knows that well. She gets to work right away, starting off with offering Bijou her hand to sniff along with some treats, before moving on to a quick and simple Pokérus test.

By now, Bee is probably aware of exactly the sort of questions that fill that overly-active brain of Ceri’s.

Chinchou. The Angler Pokémon.

Bioluminescence is already to be expected from such a species, but where most Chinchou simply shine, this one is radiant. Its whole body seems to glow, not just its antennae, and along the blue scales of its body, there is a vibrant pattern.

”Aren’t you a cute one?” Ceri smiles at the little fish before turning to go grab her lab coat and sample collection kit. ”That’s an Illumina pokémon alright. I had never seen the genes being showcased by a species that is already bioluminescent in nature, it’s pretty interesting. Did you get it from the hatchery up in 117?”

It’s where most of these unusual pokémon come from these days. She even has a couple of them herself.

Once her lab coat is on, it’s carefully that Ceri begins collecting samples, starting off with a standard Pokérus test that will only take a moment to give them its result. Then she moves on to a buccal smear for DNA, and to check the Chinchou’s Infinity Energy readings.

”Do you think that in the deep sea, this level of luminescence would prove advantageous or disadvantageous?” She asks him out of curiosity.

To be fair, Ceri hadn’t forgotten the fact that Killian Decker had once swore her to secrecy, but a long time had passed since then, and between the excursion into the Tree of Life and the events of Necrozma’s recent attack, rumours had naturally begun to spread. She still wouldn’t have mentioned it to most people, of course, but Priam has a way of somehow always being aware of everything that goes on in Team Rocket. It’s like his special talent.

”Yeah yeah, Mr Awesome. You’re like, totally the best.” She chuckles, humouring him half because it’s hilarious and half because she really does want those samples. Ceri may think of Priam as her friend, she would even go as far as saying she adores him, but there’s no denying he has some cool pokémon she’s been dying to poke ever since she found out about them.

”Samples would be great, though! I guess we can start with one of your shadows or something? MAGMA set up this neat little shop, maybe if you get yourself enough merits you can redeem something cool!” She winks then.

Today, she wears black from head to toe, even her nails being painted in perfect obsidian matte. There are sleeves under her lab coat, and her cleavage is covered for once, but it probably doesn’t make up for the fact that she’s still wearing a crop top and a skirt that is as short as it gets. You win some, you lose some.

Ceri’s laboratory, however, is pristine, and all equipment has been set up just as it had for the executive’s previous appointments. She has a tablet in hand, and it’s with a bright smile that she greets BARNABY FINCH.

He had been proving M.A.G.M.A with samples from the very beginning, and for that Ceri is admittedly incredibly grateful. After all, this new project she has found herself involved in has proven to be extremely interesting.
