There were certain benefits to her position as an assistant at Team Rocket’s laboratories, for while still a grunt and at the very bottom of the criminal organisation’s strict hierarchy, it meant she didn’t often have to go out and do the same kind of jobs that were assigned to most grunts (unless short-staffed, that is). Her talents laid elsewhere and Team Rocket knew that. Of course, it also helped that she had been part of the organisation for years now.

This night was a bit different, for this night’s pokémon were going to the lab itself, and such being the case, Ceri had been asked to board the boat along with someone else Rocket had sent and make sure their cargo made it to the submarine safely.

A typical smuggling run, although perhaps one with not very typical smugglers…

Leggings, sneakers, a hoodie... The sort of outfit any young woman her age would wear. Paired with headphones that made it seem like she had just gone for a midnight run along the harbour. She stood at no more than 5’3”, and when standing before the woman waiting for her, she smiled sweetly.

It’s like nothing she’s seen before.

In her time studying the venoms and poisons produced by different species of pokémon, it’s often that Ceri has found herself having to modify their composition and even create specific antidotes. None of that is similar to this, though.

The Poipole whines and pokes at her, but Ceri pays it no mind, her full attention being on collecting as much of the liquid as possible in her vials. By the time Luka asks her questions, she has raised one of them up, looking at the liquid under the sunlight and through the transparent plastic.

”Mmm… My best guess is that it’s your Poipole’s own venom? Almost as if the tree has a fast-acting immune system that responded immediately to the presence of the toxins and acted to get rid of them…” She’s captivated, that much is obvious in her voice, being so preoccupied with her own thoughts that for a second she even forgets about Luka’s presence. ”I’ll have to run some tests when I’m back at the lab…”

It could be called silly to find comfort in meeting someone hailing from the same region as her, for Galar is huge and it’s unlikely they would have ever met back there. Yet, it will always be nice to find someone she has something in common with in a place like Hoenn, and the smile that illuminates her expression when hearing Toshiaki’s comment on her accent is all too honest.

thread summary:
Given her specialisation in toxins, Cillian Quinn recruits Ceri to perform experiments on a Slowking in an attempt to get it to form change. Naturally, being still a student and only a lab assistant, she worries about making a good impression, but the experiment still goes wrong and their subject ends up dying in a horrific way.

why is it important?:
While Ceri generally helps out around the lab, this is the first time she got to do an experiment of her own (with her own hypothesis and formula) for Team Rocket. It’s the first time she interacts with one of Rocket’s higher ups, and it marks a really important moment in her development as a character and sets a path for where she’ll go from this point on, since while the experiment may have been a failure, that doesn’t deter her from wishing to find an answer. Furthermore, it also shows how cold and uncaring she can be when it comes to the wellbeing of pokémon – especially those that are seen as subjects.

Not exactly the greatest start to her Shoal Cave adventures, but what else is to be expected when she spends most of her time in classrooms or the lab? She isn’t even dressed particularly well for this sort of situation, for while she may be wearing snow boots, they also come paired with leggings and a bright yellow parka over an oversized sweater.

At least she had been wise enough to tie up her hair into one long ponytail, something that proves helpful when she falls, or her locks would surely be a mess.

Another concern is the potential of someone seeing her making such an stupid mistake, but apparently she doesn’t get lucky when it comes to that part…

”Oh… Hey.” Chocolate eyes look up to meet those of a boy who is way too cute for his own good, and gently, she takes his hand to help herself up – her fingers all too cold because her mittens remain in a pocket of her parka.

”Thanks for the help, I guess I forgot how slippery it can get.” She laughs lightly then, her words coated in a Galarian accent as if honey-glazed.

When one studies something like Toxicology, being observant can often be key, for it’s important to be capable of noticing even the slightest of changes in a subject.

As if having consumed a poison that quickly takes effect, beckett carlson’s demeanour changes the moment he looks at her. Had he expected someone different? Probably, but even if Ceri realises as much, watching his reaction is all too amusing to the young woman. He grins in the confident way of someone who wants to show off, even going as far as leaning against the table, and in response, she can’t help but giggle – the sound ever too sweet and full of joy.

”Hi! I’m Ceri, nice to meet you.” She beams, matching his energy, and a hand is even offered because that somehow feels right in a situation like this. Isn’t a detective supposed to be someone important, after all?

As she talks, she never looks away from him, making sure to make emphasis on those last few words as she holds his gaze.

A Krookodile-Man! At Slateport U! Isn’t that exciting?!

Sure, her every instinct told her that it was much more likely that this was something completely ordinary that people had blown out of proportion (as they usually do), but the idea of a man being capable of turning himself into a pokémon?! That was just too cool for her not to check it out!

All it took was persistence, finding out the name of this supposed “Krookodile-Man”, and mentioning to the dean how she had worked with him in the past and would love to help with the investigation because she’s just soooo worried about him (she totally had worked with him, even if only a couple of times), and tada! She got herself access to the wreck of a lab that made for today’s crime scene!
