Whoa. This kid is -cool-. He's, like, so smart he doesn't even need to talk. Beau wonders what it's like to be able to get your point across with such brevity. At Klaus' expectant look, he shakes himself out of his reverie and laughs, canting his head to one side. "Oh, sorry little brah, was that a question?"

He grins broadly at Klaus, shaking his head as the door behind him bursts open, revealing the numerous flailing tentacles of a Tentacruel reaching out and curling upon one another in vigorously searching motions. Torben offers a low grunt that could probably pass for profanity were it intelligible, shoving at the door in an attempt to wrest it shut atop the squirming tendrils.

"I'm not lost, but are you sure you're not? Kinda a weird place to hang out. By yourself." He looks the smaller man up and down, rubbing his chin thoughtfully and noticing not at all that his Pangoro is currently slamming his fist into the wall behind him, attempting to smash the ends of the tentacles that are currently trying to pry the door open with limited success.

Beau snaps his fingers, nodding decisively. "I got it, I'll help you with the whatever you were doing, then we can get out of here and we'll both leave happy. So, what are you up to?" he inquires.

Torben body-slams the door with an almighty BANG, severing a number of the Tentacruel's tentacles where they drop to the floor and prompting a horrid screech from the other side of the thick metal. The bear turns around and leans against the door, panting.

"Brah," Beau quips, glancing to one side and noticing his pokémon's fatigued state, "You look totally tuckered out. You should, like, do some laps or something, get some physical activity in, so you don't just fall asleep on me. What if a pokémon attacks?"

Torben responds by baring his teeth viciously, but Beau has already returned to Klaus, his gaze bright with fascination, and misses the murderous glare entirely.

The man lifts an arm and waves effusively in greeting as he approaches, a wide grin spanning across his features. "The one and only!" he proclaims, thumping his chest proudly. "I'm guessing you're Georgette - it's either you or the Wooloo, so I like my chances," he offers with a wink.

His companion is a Rillaboom that has nearly a foot of height on the tall, powerfully-built young man, but despite his intimidating stature, the simian pokémon lumbers to a stop just behind and to one side of Beau, lifting a huge hand in greeting. While the skies, grey and apprehensive, may well herald rain, it seems the only consideration Beau has made for this eventuality is a heavy pair of hiking boots and a blue hooded sweatshirt. Takes all sorts, one supposes.

The burly man blinks, taking just a moment to follow this jump of logic without appearing remotely perturbed by it. "Deal!" he grins, nodding decisively. "I'm Beau, it's great to meet you, Conrad! Hang on, just let me..."

He abandons his post by the fence to jog toward his makeshift picnic, rummaging around in the bag he'd left behind. He straightens with a triumphant "Aha!", holding a small wrapped parcel aloft.

Returning to Priam with buoyant energy, he unwraps a corner of the parcel to reveal what would conservatively be referred to as an overstuffed sandwich. "Chicken and veg sammy," Beau announces solemnly, "Everything y'need to keep going through the day!"

He glances again over to the two Pangoro, then snaps his fingers as comprehension lights up his features. "Oh, I have a great idea, too!" He unclips a pokéball from his belt and tosses it to the ground, revealing...another Pangoro. "Hey, Torben, you wanna help us set up these two over here to have a great date night?" the man inquires, glancing around at the blue sky and puffy white clouds scuttling lazily by overhead. "Date...day?"

Beau watches the young lady steel herself when confronted by the first obstacle, though he can't quite keep himself from leaning forward in interest as Lyra the Dragonair begins weaving an intricate Dragon Dance between the platforms. While far from the most seasoned battler, he can't quite say he's ever seen a pokémon's inspirational attack used to benefit its trainer.

Despite the oddity of the situation, it certainly seems to - or, at the very least, it has imbued her with a sense of confidence she had to that point been sorely lacking. The Gym Leader can't help but grin madly to himself as Talia dances lightly across the treacherous pedestals as though they were the widest road imaginable, her footfalls so light that they prove no more obstruction than a cobblestone path.

"Keep going!" he bellows up at her, pumping his fist in the air. "You're doing great, just watch the edge!" He doesn't know whether avidly cheering on one's challengers is the done thing, where Gym Leaders are concerned, but the young woman pirouetting across one of his trickiest obstacles is not the same one that entered, nervous to bits, through his front door, and damn if he's not going to watch her fly.

Beau shades his eyes as he ambles leisurely up to meet the new arrival, features quirked into a crooked grin. "Hey, brah!" he greets, extending a hand to the man for a firm shake. "Name's Beau, good to meet you! You're gonna be..." he trails off a moment, brow furrowed in thought, before his features brighten and he snaps his fingers in recognition. "Mr. Anderson, here for the non-traditional challenge, am I right?"

Whatever constitutes further greeting on his part is interrupted by a loud THUD that causes him to turn. Further into the gym, by all appearances, a Rillaboom has just clotheslined a Pangoro into submission of his own accord. Shaking his burly arm with a grin, the Rillaboom reaches down to help the ursine pokémon up, though both freeze at the sight of Beau's incredulous stare. "Dudes, not in front of the guests!" Beau hisses, making a chopping motion across his throat in a swift gesture before turning back to Laurence.

"Sorry about that," he offers, rubbing the back of his head awkwardly. "Those two are constantly trying to one-up each other. I can't say I blame them, I know that feeling," he grins.

Beau's laugh sounds up from a vantage point below the platform - even if he can't be seen from Mars' current position, his enthusiasm is infectious. "Alright! This first obstacle has something for the both of you to do, so don't get distracted!"

A loud, metallic "CLANK" sounds from below, and up on Mars' platform, a metal arm swings into view, bearing a hanging handle resembling - if one is generous and possibly squinting - the handlebars of a bicycle. The handle is attached to a thick, braided wire that leads purposefully from the platform down over the water to a square wooden raft floating in the middle of the shallows.

At the same time as the zip-line swings into place, a flock of Wingull launch themselves from the rocks of Dewford's traditional arena, winging graceful paths at varying levels of elevation and in various patterns - some lazy and slow, some wildly erratic. From the webbed legs of each, gleaming silver bells hang from yard-long strings, glinting in the midday light. Despite their frenetic activity, not one of the flying pokémon leave the perimeter of the challenge area - well-trained, or dense? One might never know.

Challenging an Obstacle:

Challenging an obstacle requires a minimum of two posts per obstacle. After your first, Beau Fontaine will react accordingly if necessary before you post further, completing the obstacle.

As you are undertaking the challenge with Urania the Noivern, some obstacles may be terrestrial for Mars, and some may be aerial for Urania. As an example, the first obstacle features a relatively simple task for Mars, and more involvement on Urania's part.

You begin the Gym Challenge with five stamina points, representing the physical toll the course takes on you and your pokémon. There are three obstacles in total.

When you make your final post of undertaking the obstacle, you must roll. 1-50 represents a low exertion, causing you to lose only 1 stamina point. 51-100 represents a high exertion, causing you to lose 2 stamina points.

If you reach 0 stamina, you fall from the obstacle course.

Obstacle: Zip It! + Be There With Bells On

Mars' challenge for the first obstacle is "Zip It!". This entails riding a zip-line to the raft without letting go despite the increasing speed of travel along the downward-inclined line.

Urania's challenge for the first obstacle is "Be There With Bells On", and is slightly more involved. A flock of Wingull is circling the area. Urania must demonstrate agility, precision, and speed to retrieve five silver bells that the Wingull are towing with them.

As the sun grows lower in the sky, Beau decides that it's not the worst idea he's ever had to start heading back to the entrance of the Safari Zone. Two new pokemon are safely stowed on his belt, and Chaos toddles behind him with a self-satisfied air, head held high and eyes half-hooded in smug pride.

Their trek is interrupted by rustling grass nearby, and Beau freezes, causing Chaos to walk into the back of his calves again with a grunt. Narrowing his eyes suspiciously, he regards the grass with some tension until a Swirlix pops into view, tongue sticking out of her mouth.

"...OH MY GOSH MINE," Beau utters all at once, urging Chaos forward to distract the pokemon. Chaos, unimpressed, offers a single loud "BARK" that startles the Swirlix into toppling over helplessly. Beau chucks his final Safari Ball with a whoop, scoring a direct hit on the incapacitated Fairy-type.

beau's curry entry
thread summary: Beau Fontaine and Georgette Bluebottle leave their Thwackey and Deerling, respectively, to socialize at the daycare while they take care of important Trainer-ly things. Their pokémon do not appreciate this and devise an ill-conceived jailbreak.[break][break]why is it important?: While this was not necessarily the most conducive to Beau's growth as a character, owing to him not being involved per the nature of the thread, this was enormously fun to play with exclusively from the perspective of one of Beau's pokémon. Gigi is truly delightful to write with, and I think we both enjoyed going off the rails a little to play around from the perspective of the pokémon themselves, different means of communication, et cetera. Just really a different conceit from any of the other threads I've participated in up to this point that I'd honestly like to see more of!

Dominic goes flying as Paschal digs his stance into the ground, the Thwackey sailing over the Deerling's head to go tumbling into the dirt, his stick becoming separated from him in the melee and disappearing somewhere off the side of the path. He squawks in indignation, patting the ground and looking around frantically for his stick, to no avail, then glares at the Deerling, fuming.

When the telltale light of evolution envelops Paschal and he emerges a rime-touched Sawsbuck, the Thwackey barely notices, such are the heights of his irritation. That bullheaded deer! Didn't he know finding Beau first would be faster for the both of them? He throws his head back and screeches, eclipsed in a brief halo of light before he emerges as a Rillaboom, stomping at the ground and pounding his chest in challenge.

"Whoa, brah, whoa!" Beau pants, skidding to a halt where he's been running up the path since he saw the Thwackey go airborne. "Easy, man, what's all the fuss?" Beau looks the now-Rillaboom up and down appraisingly, eyebrows lifting in surprise. "Dude, nice gains!"

Almost comically, Dominic immediately lopes around behind Beau, offering a chastised grunt as he glowers at Paschal from over the top of Beau's head. Even if the original plan hadn't gone as smoothly as he'd intended, he had, at least, gotten the desired outcome in the end.

The pair come across another thatch of tall grass, this time with the cream-colored point of a tufted tail sticking out above the grass. Wiser to his previous mistake, Beau gestures for Chaos to investigate, which the Snubbull does with a pout, adjusting his sunglasses purposefully before bounding into the grass with a "BARKBARKBARK!"

The intrusion chases out none other than an Eevee, who mills about in a panic as the Snubbull chases him in circles. Narrowing his eyes in concentration, Beau readies a pokéball before hurling it at the Eevee, capturing it in a flare of red light before the ball snaps shut decisively.

Satisfied, Chaos nudges the ball toward Beau before trotting over, concluding his exertion with a content snuffle. Beau reaches down to scratch the smaller pokémon under his chin, grinning. "Now that's how we do it!"

Almost as in response to Talia's query, the water begins to ripple in multiple places before two dozen or more small, circular platforms burst forth from the water in an enormous cluster, each rising to the height of the platform Talia currently stands on. They loosely form a wide pathway leading to another platform further out on the water, but one or two offer a telltale wobble, indicating that they may not all be as stable as they seem.

However: some of the platforms are deliberately tricky, and will swing wildly to one side or the other rather than support your weight! You may RP any difficulty you have with this in the manner you deem fit; the mechanical challenge is only in the stamina system outlined above.

Beau's investigation of the side room results in a Lampent coming alight, filling the small chamber with a flickering purple glow. Startled, Beau jumps back, but Torben is there to make up for the misstep with another ferocious slash, sending the Ghost-type spinning away through a wall with a wail.

"Thanks, brah," Beau mutters, clapping Torben good-naturedly on the back. The Pangoro responds with a dismissive grunt as the pair wander back into the main hallway.

Where they are greeted by Klaus equally wandering into the main hallway.

"AAAAAH!" Beau yells in a totally masculine and not-at-all frightened cadence, jumping back defensively and lifting his arms in a threatening series of karate poses he saw in a movie once. "Oh, jeez, you're not a ghost," he observes, the tension easing out of his frame as he approaches the other man more calmly.

"Got it in one!" Beau nods gamely in reference to Martin's assumption about a more direct approach. "Wouldn't be much worth celebrating if you blinked past all the good stuff to snag the prize, don't you think?" he grins.

Ostensibly pausing to take in the sheer array of structures and towers that have been built along waterside, Beau allows the other man a moment to ruminate on his choice of companion. The Luxury Ball appearing doesn't faze him in the slightest, given the way his challenger carries himself, but the Noivern that follows earns a pair of raised eyebrows and a broad, eager smile.

"Ooh, this'll be fun," Beau laughs, giving a genial nod to the batlike pokémon. "Nemo, Torben - get the aerials ready, would you guys?" he calls out to a low, craggy series of rocks seated further into the water. Roused, a Pangoro clambers slowly up from his resting spot, while a Swampert breaches the water's surface nearby. Both offer a wave to Beau before they trundle off to make their preparations.

As for the man himself, he steps aside to clear the way up a low ramp rising from the beach to a small platform above. "That's your starting point," he quips to Martin, gesturing to the ramp. "When you're ready, you two can head up and I'll explain the first obstacle!"
