"Oh, you mean you're actually here LOOKING for ghosts?" Beau inquires, incredulous. Some of the tension leaves his shoulders as he witnesses the Litwick dispatch of the Misdreavus with little trouble, and he shrugs. "I got wind that there were incidents of vandalism happening inside, but now I'm wondering if it was ghosts. Or ghost -hunters-," he drawls, narrowing his eyes suspiciously at the younger man.

His attention is broken by an Octillery surging down the hallway, limbs flailing. "God, what is with the tentacles down here?" Beau sighs, gesturing at Torben. The Pangoro responds by surging toward the Octillery, landing a flurry of Bullet Punches that send it skidding slimily down the hallway and into the darkness once more.

"So, you vandalizing the place?" he inquires, turning his attention to Klaus once more and stepping forward, standing over him imposingly. "I'm not afraid to keep my eye on you."

"Oh, nothing too special really. I thought it would be a neat idea to have trainers push themselves as hard as they push their pokémon to fight, so it's a little bit of an obstacle course." He scratches his chin contemplatively as Dominic lumbers behind him. "Course, I'm not sure I can settle on one setup, I keep changing it between challengers because I keep having better ideas!"

His voice trails off as whatever he was about to say next is arrested. Dominic peers around and waves a hand in front of Beau's face, where the man has stopped in place along the path. Beau sways slightly, his eyes unfocused and glassy, and a bit of drool glistens at the corner of his slackjawed, upturned mouth.

Dominic peers at Beau, then looks toward the edge of the route with a grunt. A Spinda twirls about idly, having caught Beau in her Teeter Dance. Almost derisively, Dominic stomps his foot with a loud THUD, jolting Beau from his reverie and knocking the Spinda back on her rump.

"Huhwhabuh?" Beau inquires intelligently, sputtering. The Rillaboom points at the prone Spinda, and Beau's face lights up as he procures a pokeball and tosses it at the smaller creature. "Nice catch, brah!" he exclaims, fistbumping the Rillaboom before jogging up a bit to catch up to Georgette.

"What about yours? I've heard all kinds of neat things about Mossdeep City!"

Beau blinks as a new round of spotlights flares into life directly opposite him, squinting to see through the uncomfortable mask as the beams of light ballyhoo and dance all around the arena before centering on another brightly-painted doorway now host to an absolutely shredded woman who looks to be trying out an Arcanine cosplay that has approximately the same production value as his own borrowed wardrobe.

"ONLY ONE OF OUR CHALLENGERS WILL WALK OUT VICTORIOUS TONIGHT!" the announcer's voice booms crazily, reverberating oddly from the metal walls of the warehouse. "Who will it be? Place your bets, place your bets! Let's hear it for THE DEWFORD DESTROYER!"

A round of not-entirely-sober cheering, stomping, and a few whistles erupts from the spectators. Beau, taken aback, looks to one side, then the other. Well, when in Rome...

He reaches up to undo the clasp of his shiny cape, letting the fabric fall to the floor before he takes a few steps forward to the center of the arena. Grinning behind his mask, he drops into a crouch and flexes his arms ostentatiously, biceps bulging to another series of cheers from the crowd. They're apparently here for a show, and he can't think of much showier with what he's got.

"Alright, now let's give it up for ARCANINE-OUT-OF-NINE!"

If the cheering and stomping was enthusiastic for him, it's positively raucous for his competitor, and he thinks the aluminum walls of the building might actually be shaking from the force of the response. Well, shit. Maybe he's actually in trouble this time.

Beau's eyebrows go up at the appearance of the shiny Lapras - he hadn't been in close proximity to one before, and the admiration is clear upon his features. Nodding eagerly, he passes the sandwich off to Torben and points him over to the evidently confused pair of Pangoro.

Twisting his head to allow a single, unimpressed stare to remain fixed on his trainer, Torben ambles through the gate with a grunt, approaching the other two pokémon with a deadpan expression. Tossing the sandwich onto the ground between the two, he utters a low series of grunts and growls that cause the other Pangoro to glance at him, then each other with flabbergasted expressions.

"Hey, no, they're supposed to eat the sandwich! That's a good sandwich!" Beau cries, wounded. Torben and the other two Pangoro, to their credit, pay him no mind whatsoever, resuming their conversation. The female regards the male with surprise, thumping him on the chest indignantly.

Beau turns to Conrad with a furrowed brow. "Does it look like it's working? I'm not sure it's working."

Beau grins as the other man absolutely nails the landing, watching with some interest as Urania descends at the same time, both challengers having completed their tasks in near-record time. He can't say he's surprised, after all, but he does enjoy seeing people succeed.

The next obstacle looms ahead, however, and in Mars' case it involves a steeply-inclined wall rising out of the water just to the far side of the raft. "Next up, just gotta climb to the top of that wall, brah!" Beau calls. "And I do mean climb, not fly!"

Almost comically, the bubble-headed face of a Dewpider pops into view at the top of the wall. Jumping upward in surprise, it begins to prance back and forth along the upper edge of the wall, engaging in a Water Sport that quickly and constantly drenches the surface of the wall in a sheet of flowing water, sure to make progress tricky at best and - well - damp at worst.

This obstacle features a sharply-inclined wall that must be climbed to progress. Making the process more difficult is Beau's Dewpider, who patrols the top of the wall with a ceaseless Water Sport that makes progressing up the wall a slick proposition indeed!

Beau lets out a loud whoop as Talia alights on the final platform, pumping his fist in the air from his vantage point on the beach. "Great job!! I knew you could do it!" he hollers.

The course appears to offer no rest for the wicked, however, and the second obstacle makes itself known the moment Talia arrives at her destination: A long rope bridge sways perilously in space from her platform to the next, spanning almost the entire length of the watery area that the course has led her to. Below, a Swampert circles lazily in the surf while a Poliwrath leaps from rock to rock.

The Gym Leader raises a silver whistle from around his neck, blowing into it with a sharp tweet. In response, the two water-types begin firing broad jets of water at the bridge - not striking it directly, but causing it to sway perilously from proximity to the blasts.

"Try not to get wet!" Beau calls out unhelpfully, a huge grin stretched across his features.

Obstacle: Bridge Work!

This obstacle features a rope bridge of wooden planks strung flat from one platform to the next. A rope runs along the center of the planks, while two are at waist level for Talia to hold and keep her balance. Take care, though! Beau's water pokémon are blasting geysers up from the shallows below - if one strikes, it's not liable to hurt very much, but it might be hard to stay on the bridge!

The Gym Leader grins warmly, nodding in agreement. "I don't know about dangerous, but I'd hate to stare another repair bill in the face!" Without elaborating, he jerks a thumb over his shoulder toward the beach in invitation, then turns, ambling easily toward the open bay at the rear of the building.

"Call it my addiction to the waves, but I really dig battling out in the open, y'know?" Beau chats blithely as he negotiates a meandering set of wooden steps that descend from the building to the beach. "You get some levels, you get some excitement, and man, that salt air!" As if to punctuate his point, he inhales deeply, closing his eyes and offering a contented sigh. Glancing back at Adrian, he winks. "Just gotta watch out for the tide going in and out. Sometimes it's a dry plateau, and sometimes it's a pool with stepping stones. Think we're good right now, though," he gestures, ambling across the shallows to the arena itself.

True to his word, the vaguely circular platform of rock seems to be relatively solid, if a little damp. Little hills and valleys pockmark the main surface of the arena, while the perimeter erupts upward in a craggy series of natural pedestals and ledges. Atop the furthest of these is the Swampert from earlier on, joined now by a Pangoro who regards the approaching pair with hooded eyes, chewing on his stalk dismissively.

Beau lifts a hand to wave at the two pokémon waiting for him, breaking into a quick jog to part from Adrian and adopt his position at the far side of the arena. "Nemo and Torben, at your service! Please, make your selections and feel free to have first move. Guest rules," Beau calls with a lopsided grin. The two bulky pokémon advance from their positions, taking battle-ready stances near the center of the arena.

Beau grins broadly, gesturing to the open expanse of beach visible out the rear wall of the gym before turning and heading in that direction, a slight bounce in his step. "Stoked to start, huh? I would be, too!" He laughs as he navigates down a small set of wooden steps, moving seamlessly from the polished floors of the gym to the golden sands of the Dewford shoreline with an easy, practiced gait.

"Alright, guys, time to get some air time!" he hollers, cupping his hands around his mouth to project his voice across the course. In response, a half-dozen Pelipper take flight from various points around the beach and shallows. More noticeable once they begin flapping their wings, however, is that each tows a huge golden hoop beneath them that slowly spins in place, suspended from its tether.

The Gym Leader comes to a halt before a vertical climbing wall, its surface dotted with brightly-colored protrusions that evidently serve as hand- and footholds to assist in ascending it. "Easy enough to start you off with," he winks, pointing first at the Pelipper slowly circling in the skies, then to the wall ahead of him. "Little bit of a tandem effort, here. Your first obstacle is getting to the top of this wall, but be careful - some of those grips aren't as sturdy as they seem."

He shoots the silver Metagross a quick thumbs-up of encouragement, addressing it next. "Your job is to head up there and make it through all six hoops while your buddy there is climbing the wall. Can't miss a hoop, can't aim badly and knock it down, and can't KO one of my birdbrained brahs, right?"

He nods eagerly to the pair, taking a step away from the first challenge. "Whenever you're ready!"

Challenging an Obstacle:

Challenging an obstacle requires a minimum of two posts per obstacle. After your first, Beau Fontaine will react accordingly if necessary before you post further, completing the obstacle.

As you are undertaking the challenge with Ro the Metagross, some obstacles may be terrestrial for Lars, and some may be aerial for Ro. As an example, the first obstacle features a relatively simple task for Lars, and more involvement on Ro's part.

You begin the Gym Challenge with five stamina points, representing the physical toll the course takes on you and your pokémon. There are three obstacles in total.

When you make your final post of undertaking the obstacle, you must roll. 1-50 represents a low exertion, causing you to lose only 1 stamina point. 51-100 represents a high exertion, causing you to lose 2 stamina points.

If you reach 0 stamina, you fall from the obstacle course.

Obstacle: Everything to Scale + A Surefire Ringer!

[break][break]
Lars' challenge for the first obstacle is "Everything to Scale". A tall rock-climbing wall stands between Lars and the first landing. Several brightly-colored protrusions offer handholds and footholds to help him scale the wall, but be careful! Some of them could simply be clusters of packed sand that will disintegrate under his weight!

Ro's challenge for the first obstacle is "A Surefire Ringer". Around the course, high in the air, six golden rings are held aloft, slowly spinning in place. Ro must demonstrate agility and accurate timing to circle the course and pass through each ring in order to progress to the next obstacle.

Beau grins as the man and his Riolu take off across the pontoons, unable to keep from chuckling as the agile Riolu darts from buoy to buoy. The other man - while indeed larger than his companion - appears to have precious little trouble himself with the obstacle, and the floats don't seem to budge far from their mooring as they sink and rise under the feet of trainer and pokémon alike.

The Gym Leader glances up at the sky almost idly, hands in his pockets as he meanders along the shoreline to his vantage point for the next obstacle - it certainly didn't seem like Gwyar was going to have any trouble in the slightest with the first hurdle, but that isn't entirely surprising. It's not like he -wants- his challengers to fail, after all!

His next sagacious observation is pre-empted by an Arrokuda smacking him in the back of the head and sending him stumbling forward. "What the fish?!" he exclaims, rubbing his head in irritation and turning around to face his aggressor: an oversized Cramorant, squawking in a parody of laughter.

Beau's normally bright features darken as his eyes narrow in challenge. "Nemo, get 'er!" The Marshtomp responds enthusiastically, causing a Rock Slide that the puffed-up bird can't dodge in time, knocking it sprawling into the shallows where it meets the pokéball that Beau hurls at it with perhaps a bit more force than is necessary.

Beau offers a low, appreciative whistle from his vantage point as Urania effortlessly flies alongside the Wingull, weaving between the smaller birds so smoothly that it scarcely disturbs their flight paths. Bell after bell is quietly pilfered with nary a sign of a scuffle, and the Gym Leader can't help but allow a small grin to curl the corners of his mouth. It's impressive, but he expected to be impressed given the other man's bearing from the minute he walked into the gym.

More unfortunate is the notion that he can't lay eyes on Mars' current platform, as he's currently posted up on the beach directly beneath it. Still, he hasn't yet seen a bougie trust fund beneficiary make a swift and abrupt descent onto the raft yet, so he's reasonably certain he's safe to call up a little unsolicited advice.

"Hang on tight!" he hollers, cupping a hand to his mouth and directing his voice to the platform above. "Gets a little hairy toward the end, so don't let go until you see planks underneath you, brah!"

Beau grins, waving a hand self-deprecatingly. "I told you, it's just Beau! Mr. Fontaine is only around on Saturday nights," he snickers, earning himself a sharp elbow from the Pangoro standing next to him.

Rubbing his ribs and concealing his wince with a bright smile, the Gym Leader gestures to a low ramp leading from the beach to just atop the shallows of the cerulean water lapping at the shore. "I know they say if you're asked to walk on water, it's too much...but guess what?" he enthuses.

It appears that the first obstacle of the course entails just that - a number of long pontoons has been carefully roped into the shape of a makeshift path leading to a small platform further out into the water. The pontoons bob lazily in the surf, held mostly in place by sections of heavy rope, but still obviously subject to the whims of the water.

"Keep your balance," Beau advises, tapping the side of his nose knowingly.

Challenging an Obstacle:

Challenging an obstacle requires a minimum of two posts per obstacle. After your first, Beau Fontaine will react accordingly if necessary before you post further, completing the obstacle.

As you are undertaking the challenge with Raki the Riolu, he will accompany you every step of the way and complete the obstacles alongside you!

You begin the Gym Challenge with five stamina points, representing the physical toll the course takes on you and your pokémon. There are three obstacles in total.

When you make your final post of undertaking the obstacle, you must roll. 1-50 represents a low exertion, causing you to lose only 1 stamina point. 51-100 represents a high exertion, causing you to lose 2 stamina points.

If you reach 0 stamina, you fall from the obstacle course.

Obstacle: Water Walking!

This obstacle features a dozen lightweight pontoons stretched outward in a path, floating just on top of the water. Your objective is to cross the water using the pontoons to reach the next platform.

However, tread carefully! Though the pontoons are secured to float in place using rope, they're still rather wobbly, and a wrong-footed step will send you rolling into the water! Can you make it across these bombastically bobbing baffles without blowing bubbles in the briny?
