Allison didn’t seem too hopeless when she heard about the scope of their task. That was a nice diversion of expectations. A singular question was asked, one to which he nodded and said. “Yes, the chefs clean the kitchen.” He then smirked jovially and commented. “And woe to those who dare misplace anything in that area.” He couldn’t help but chuckle at his little teasing.

Allison then finished feasting. He showed her where the dishwasher was and then led her back to where he had placed the cleaning supplies. “Alright. You will be starting with the tables. Take all of the items upon them down, then wash properly before putting all these things back in their place.” He showed her how to do it on the first table.

First, he removed all the items as he said, which included the table cloth, napkin holder, etc. Then he took the soap-water bucket and placed it nearby. He quickly bathed the cleaning cloth in it then wrung as much of the water out as possible, before swiping the table with long graceful swipes. Once satisfied, he took the items he had removed, glanced at them, cleaned what little dirt there was upon them, and set them back in their place.

“And that’s how it should be done on ALL the tables.” He emphasized all. Since he didn’t want the work done poorly.

Berthold nodded in acknowledgment. Sleeping on a sofa was far from ideal, they would have to change that as soon as possible. Alas, they hadn’t had the time to buy proper bedding for Allison’s room.

He then waited for her to find some food. Though he was pleased by the fact that she didn’t empty the entire fridge as teenagers ever so often did. “Cleaning is what we are going to start with.” Her sarcasm wasn’t lost upon him. But little did she seem to know that it was probably going to feel back-breaking since she barely if ever had done work at home.

“We will be cleaning this room.” He gestured for the dining area that they were currently occupying. “And the other one.” A quick motion towards the Bar area. “But don’t worry. We don’t touch the kitchen.” Oh no, he didn’t dare touch the chef’s area, they were very territorial.

Once he heard her get up and move about he would leave her be, she needed time to become presentable. Instead, he walked down and began to prepare the things she needed to do.

Finally, she came down, dressed and presentable as she should be, even though she wouldn’t be doing any servicing today. “Good morning, I hope you slept well.” He said. Standing there in the dining area, soap water-filled bucket in hand and cleaning cloth in the other. He set both items near the first table and turned to Allison.

“Go get some breakfast from the kitchen. We will be starting once you’ve finished eating.” He informed the girl, he wasn’t mean enough to make her work on an empty stomach.

To claim the Frosmoth was displeased by the spores would be the understatement of the year. But she powered through it like any Pokémon would for their trainer. Berthold didn’t mind it. Though neither stayed long, for they made their choice quickly and decisively.

They went right, once more blocked from ever returning to the previous path. Onward they went down the straight path of this Maze. Soon they found themselves in front of a regal, elegant, and dignified Tsareena. She was bored, that much even Berthold could glean from her facial expression. Yet, surprise washed over her as she realized she wasn’t alone. Much to Berthold’s amusement.

“Thank you very much.” With a courteous bow did he accept the box from the Pokémon. He felt inclined to speak further with the Pokémon but knew he would be wasting her time. “I hope it won’t be long before another traveler meets you. Fare thee well, M’lady.” He said he couldn’t help himself as the Tsareena had seemed so regal and worthy of the title.

He then turned his attention to the next path. The shaded path on the left or a bright sunny sunflower covered the right. There was only one choice to make here. He picked right.

Beep, beep, Beep. The sound of the alarm resonated through the entirety of Berthold’s bedroom, and out on the corridor, he knew not if it awoke Allison. But he was certainly awake now. It was an early morning, the sun had barely risen, and yet it was time for the day to start, a fact which he was certain would not please the young lady.

He got out of bed and threw on some casual clothes, a shirt, and some jeans, nothing as fancy as the outfit he had worn yesterday. It would do for the morning routine. Today’s plan would start with cleaning. But first, he would walk downstairs and grab something to eat. Once that was done, and his bellyful, he looked upon the clock and realized Allison hadn’t awoken, or at least not come down, yet.

And so he walked upstairs again until he reached his former living room, now turned into the abode of a Teenage Girl. He knocked on the door, loudly but gently before saying. “It’s time to wake up, we got work to do.” For someone of his age, he sure sounded energetic.

“She didn’t have the talent for it, which you have to have if you intend to live off of it,” Berthold admitted.

“Among other things. You will be cleaning, serving, and handling the caretaking of whatever Pokémon may find this place to be their home. Whatever role needs filling, you will be there.” He started “And don’t worry, you will be paid a fair wage.” He assured her.

It was then that he decided to get up from the chair. “Now, since my available rooms are limited, this room will serve as your place of residence, so make yourself comfortable.” He began to walk toward the door. “Now, I will have to get back to work. And you will be starting tomorrow, so I would suggest that you spend the rest of the day getting acquainted with the house and the area.” He finished before letting Allison to her own devices.

“Yeah, we did our fair share of battles, me more so than her,” Berthold commented. “I am sure you can get a fancy diploma at a school for Pokémon grooming, but, the ones I met and talked with, never did, so it’s not something you have to do.” He looked at Allison, it seemed that his suggestion had caught her interest. Though he knew if she intended to follow such a path then she would have to work much harder than she was used to, it was a competitive field, after all.

It seemed Allison caught on. “Oh, I am fine, dear.” He said. His troubles weren’t for her to witness or deal with. “Well, yes, unless you find some other way to pay for food and lodging,” Berthold stated matter-of-factly. He had sternly been reminded that this was not to be a charity, and he intended to follow that, it would do Allison good after all.

It seemed like she was finally starting to see the logic of it all, though he could not ascertain her inner monologue. But it soothed him to see that she had the wits to accept the teachings of her elders.

“Understandable, though you must keep in mind battling as a trainer is no more than a sport, even for the Pokémon. Pokémon pushes themselves only as far as they want to.” He calmly explained. “But I suppose training isn’t for everyone.” He commented.

“You could certainly settle down as a Pokémon Groomer.” He spoke. “I had no flair for aesthetics, but I know quite a few who decided to live off of grooming the Pokémon of Coordinators.” He hid a pang of sorry as the painful memory of his beloved wife flashed past him. She had had a flair for Aesthetics, had she but focused on it in her youth she might’ve made a fine Coordinator. “Whatever you decide to do, it will require discipline and good work ethics, and that’s what I am going to teach you.” A mischievous smile upon his lips, while he looked towards his grand-child.

It seemed Berthold had the wrong idea about his grandchild. She didn’t have the faintest clue what she wanted to do with her life. He had to admit that was much worse. “Because the world will find something to do with you, and you might not like it. Just look at where you are right now. You didn’t decide to be here. Someone else did.” For a second he looked stern, he remembered having this conversation all too often with his kids.

His gaze turned softer. “Oh dear, I went ahead with a lecture, huh.” He sighed. “Allison, you are sixteen, you are on your way to being an adult. And I want you to be prepared for the time when you might find a dream to work towards.” He knew his words were probably lost upon the teenager, she would doubtlessly not heed a single word he spoke.

“But enough about that.” He made a wavey gesture with his hand, figuring that trying to hammer the point in further wouldn’t help his case. “As for what you could do with your life, have you considered trying to become a professional Pokémon trainer?”

Full glad was he that her parents had explained their choices. It made the whole thing easier for him. The sigh didn’t go unnoticed. “Now, Allison-dear. You are sixteen – “ He paused. He couldn’t believe it even though it was his very own words. “And your parents are worried that you are not ready for the world of adults.” He looked at her with caring eyes, then he retrieved a chair so that he could sit in front of her.

“Now, I am not one to say whether they are right or wrong. But here we are. And if you look anything like me when I was your age, then I am sure your head is soaring in the sky with all sorts of plans.” A cheeky smile upon his lips left the impression of a man who spoke from the heart. “Now, whatever plans you may have aren’t going to happen without discipline and focus, which having an actual job will give you.” He paused, waiting to see if Allison was still following his words.

“So, Allison, what do you want to do with your life?” He directed the question at her and waited patiently for her to answer. He didn’t expect her to have a fully thought-out plan, but he needed her to be thinking about it.

Berthold waited patiently, listening to the sound of the struggles Allison were going through, it was an all too familiar sound. He chuckled a bit.

Though the wash didn’t take long. As expected, it seemed that Allison could work fast if she wanted to. Berthold nodded in response to her words and the began to walk to the next room.

He lead Allison into the room, it was currently working as Bertholds living room, with a simple sofa, table and TV being the only furniture found inside besides ornamental family pictures and paintings.

Berthold gestured for her to take a seat. “So, I assume your parent’s have already explained why they have sent you here?” He asked calmly.

Berthold nodded along as she began to explain. Naturally he knew what a vulpix would evolve into, but it was always nice to hear it explained in such a loving manner, clearly Allison had taken good care of it.

“Very well, see if you can get it off, we wouldn’t want it to leave any stains.” Berthold spoke calmly. “I will wait outside.” He then leaned up against the wall outside the bathroom.
