Berthold gazed upon the entrance to, what was quite possibly, the biggest man-made maze he had seen in his life. And all of it is located right here in Fortree City. “What do you think Eira, should we go in?” He looked upon the Frosmoth whom hovered by his side. It nodded, it shared its previous owner’s adventurous spirit. And they were here to experience Fortree and all it had to offer on this short trip.

And so they went in. Slowly walking along the paths until they reached an intersection. “Left…” he paused looking at the path that went left. “… Or right?” He looked down the right path. Neither path showed any defining features, so it was a hard choice.

Even Eira seemed unable of making a choice. “Oh well, you know what they say, the right path is always to the right…” He chuckled a bit at his own grandpa-joke and so him and his flying ice-moth began to walk down the path leading to the right.

However, as he grew older this tendency mellowed out and he has now grown capable of forming bonds with people without seeming stand-off is. Being pushed out of his comfort by both age and the natural increase in people he would get to know through his travels and then being a parent, meant that he decided to make an active choice of preferring quality over quantity. So though he may be friendly and polite to you, you will have to work and prove that you are worthy of his friendship.

[attr="class","dpennytext"] While Berthold is a polite individual, do not be fooled. He does have opinions on people, and some of them might not be positive. Especially if you are a part of Team Rocket. He has no love for those and due to certain circumstances in his life, has an active wish of ridding the world of the pest known as Team Rocket permanently, from the lowest of grunts to the highest of bosses. He will end their miserable life and the evil they cause upon the globe.

Of course, he is capable of petty rivalries as well. But he won’t use a lot of energy on that, simply preferring to discard the connection rather than sticking around.

[attr="class","dpennytext"] Berthold’s heart has already been stolen and subsequently crushed by his deceased wife. He still loves her, and couldn’t see himself with someone else even if he tried. Not to say it is impossible, but he is a human and he is still very much grieving the loss of his wife and the mother of his kids.

Though he might not be able to see himself with someone else as a lover. His heart is still filled with an abundance of love meant for a parental role.

Alas, his fears seemed to be confirmed as what appeared to be a gang composed of a small group of Sandile’s led by an angry Krokorok marched upon him. They made angry gestures and growled. Though he saw in their eyes desperation and hunger. They weren’t about to let him go.

“Can I assist you?” He asked politely, giving them a small courteous gesture with one hand as he moved the other into his pocket, retrieving a Pokéball. He was given little reply other than more growling and angry gestures. Though he could easily figure out that they were demanding food or he would be harmed.

“I do not wish to harm, but I have no food upon me.” He sighed. The group of wild Pokémon did not seem ready to stand down. But before they could attack. He acted faster. Releasing his darling Frosmoth from the Pokéball he had retrieved. Its elegant looks and shining scales caught the group of Pokémon off guard. “Eira, be a dear and deal with them. But don’t cause them too much damage.” The Frosmoth nodded and with a bask of its glorious sparkling wings a strong blizzard of ice and snow was sent towards the group, hitting them all in one go causing them great pain and freezing them in place.

“Well, done Eira.” Berthold gave small applause but saw how the Pokémon were merely trying to get their now frozen feet off the ground. “Well, seems that wasn’t enough. But I do not wish to cause them further harm.” Berthold said as he began to walk past the group. The Frosmoth followed. “Makes sure they can’t follow us.” The Frosmoth nodded. And as they walked a veil of white mist formed covering their path for quite a while before the Frosmoth halted its production.

“Thank you, Eira-dear,” Berthold said. The Pokémon made small happy noises as it moved in for a gentle head pat, which it was promptly given. And so the now trainer and Pokémon continued on their little walk down memory lane.

Things were coming along splendidly. For this reason, Berthold decided to take a nice little stroll down memory lane, and even visit a few of those places. In his younger years, he had visited Hoenn alongside his wife. They had both been young and foolish at the time. But Slateport had been their harbor, though it had been quite a bit smaller after all forty years does a lot to a city.

But walking through the abandoned streets of the Slateport Outskirts made him feel a sense of melancholy, as he moved past buildings he recognized as old storefronts he had visited in ages past. The outskirts were well and truly old and abandoned. One could even consider this a metaphor for what so often happened between children and parents. It reminded him that he had to rekindle contact with his children since it had been a while and they would surely like to know that he was doing well.

Melancholy was not the only feeling made apparent, clad in a dabber attire and with a hat to match, he was definitely looking like a nice morsel for the weak and desperate. Though he hoped that it was only a feeling imposed upon him by his surroundings and not a prediction of future events.

It seemed the term ‘gramps’ was a very popular one among the youngsters of this town. He certainly didn’t mind it. He was older and knew he might very well resemble a grand-fatherly figure to them. He nodded in acknowledgment as the woman accepted his help. Then, before getting to work he would quickly place his hat and his jacket upon the nearest appropriate coat stand.

He then rolled the sleeves of his shirt up in preparation as he walked towards the rowdy Furfrou. “A pleasure to meet you, Abigail.” He said. He figured the woman was given such a pretty name for a reason, so he might as well use it.
The woman then asked about his experience in the field of grooming. He looked down, a bit not sadly but at least as if admitting some fatal flaw. “I have to admit. I am very inexperienced. It was my wife that handled the grooming of our Pokémon back when we were younger.” He spoke as he walked closer to the Furfrou, letting it mentally adapt to his presence.

Berthold then went to work, starting by gently holding onto it at first. Which it most certainly didn’t seem to like, but it had to be done for Abigail to finish what she was doing. Berthold had to admit. He would have wished to be twenty years younger as the Furfrou began to act up. Abigail had certainly not been lying when she said the Furfrou was rowdy. He had to hold on tight to not be pushed away.

“This must be it!” Berthold looked upon the façade as he held a map in his hand. “Yes, it definitely is!” He mumbled to himself before packing the map away. He entered the premise knowing full well that someone else might’ve already arrived, the job description did say that they had to work in a pair!

“I am terrib…” The loud splash of water surprised him as it appeared just as he spoke. He thought it was a reaction caused by his arrival at first but then noticed the young lady already hard at work with the Furfrou.

Figuring he now had their attention. ”As I was saying. I am terribly sorry for arriving this late. I got a bit lost.” The old gentleman gave a polite nod while removing his hat in one well-trained motion. While he wasn’t exactly clad in suit and tie, he was definitely on the more dabber-side with his attire for once.

“I am here to help with the Prized Furfrou grooming.” He spoke with a calmness to his voice. “You seem to be hard at work already. Miss. Alas, I do not wish to intrude if you have everything under control, but if you need it then I am at your service.” He couldn’t help but give a small bow, it was nothing too obvious, the woman would probably not even notice if she wasn’t looking. “Oh, by the way, the name is Berthold, and what may I call you, Miss?”

Berthold gave him a small accepting nod. Gramps would be his nickname now, at least between the two of them. He didn’t mind. Life was too short to be bothered by such details. He then listened to the boy enthusiastically explaining how the beach was one of his favorite spots. Berthold couldn’t fault him for that. “And that in itself is commendable if only there were more people like you!” Berthold commented. An appreciative smile upon his lips.

He found another piece of trash, he took a few steps towards it, grabbed it, and in the trash bag it went. Just in time for Toshiaki’s question to be aired. “Oh, I don’t mind at all.” He looked at the boy. “Oh, that might very well be because I am not. I have recently moved here. Figured it was time for a breath of fresh air.” Another piece of wrapping was spotted within his vision. But as he bent down he felt a bit of stretching pain in his back. Oh, bother. He couldn’t help but think realized how he hadn’t been bending down properly for work like this. Quickly he corrected his posture and instead bent down using his legs rather than back. Much better. He thought at the relief proper posturing brought him.

“And, if you don’t mind me asking. What about you? Are you a native of this wonderful region?” With kind eyes did he look to the boy, gauging his reaction to the question. Not because he was expecting anything out of the ordinary, it was merely a habit.

Berthold could do naught but smile and chuckle a bit as the youngster called out in equal friendliness. It was nice to see someone of that age who hadn’t been turned sour by all that fancy ‘social media’ that the youngsters used nowadays.

While awaiting the young man’s approach. Berthold noticed the wrapping of some sort of candy half-buried in the sand. He couldn’t recognize the name, but he picked it up and threw it in the trash bag nonetheless. When he had done so, the boy had reached him. His friendly eyes kept watching over the boy as he began to speak, giving small polite nods when they were appropriate.

“Indeed, it is unfortunate that the trash somehow finds a way into the ocean.” He spoke solemnly for a brief second. “There is no better sight than to look out upon the ocean, no matter its mood it is still a beautiful sight.” His solemn voice turned more appreciative, as his words brought for the lingering emotions from memories of old. “Alas, I was unfortunately not lucky enough to grow up near the ocean. But, I’ve seen it plenty of times as an adult.” He smiled at the boy. Though the boy had remembered to introduce himself, Berthold found himself forgetting that little detail completely.

“Oh right, it seems I forgot to introduce myself as well. It is a pleasure to meet you Toshiaki. My name is Berthold. But I do not mind if you wish to continue calling me gramps.” A few low chuckles emerged from him. He couldn't help but make a mental comparison between the boy and his children, they had all been so eager and seemingly full of boundless energy back when they were small.

A smile formed upon Berthold’s lips as he stood there, upon the sandy beach of Slateport. His eyes took in the view of the regal sea. It reminded him of times long past. Better times. He allowed the moment to take hold, the memories to flood. Nothing truly did beat the view of the sea. But alas he knew that wasn’t why he was here. [break][break]
Having recently arrived in Hoenn, he was just slowly getting established. Housing was in order for now, albeit be it temporarily. Now he was just getting his bearings, and he figured the best way to do that would be to help the League with some menial tasks. Right now, removing the trash from the beach. And, to be honest it was a sorry sight. People littered as if they owned the place.

A sigh escaped him as he began to fold out the first of many trash bags that he had brought. To any onlookers, it would seem nothing out of the ordinary just an old man wearing a casual but worn-jacket with jeans to match. Glasses resting neatly upon the ridge of his nose. He had filled half of the trash bag when his eyes spotted a fellow trash-remover accompanied by a pair of Pokémon. He straightened himself and gave the boy a greeting wave. “Well, hello there. It is nice to see that I am not the only one who thought the beach could do with a good cleaning!” He spoke politely, as he beamed a friendly smile in their direction.
