Sneaking up on her like that, maybe not one of his wisest decisions, alas it was the one he picked and the one he had to live with the consequences of. He surprised her, she yelped out, and the Pokémon by her side panicked. He couldn’t help but laugh as the Pokémon ran about trying to hide and in the process knocked down a table with some customers.

Naturally, the victims got angry. Though before they could start a verbal beating of Allison, Berthold placed himself in between the customers and Allison like a shield. “I am terribly sorry for the mess.” But alas the Customer was not satisfied with an apology, luckily he defused the ‘Karen’ by offering a new serving free of charge.

Berthold waved for his Waitress to handle the rest of the situation while he turned to Allison. “Let’s go and get you two cleaned up.” He walked onto her side, wrapping one arm around her, only touching enough for him to be able to gently lead her along as he showed her to the stairs leading upwards. “It’s been far too long dear. How have you been doing?” He asked as they would walk up the stairs, leaving behind the noise of the customers and staff.

Preparations were being done expediently. Ever quicker as the clock approached an hour before lunch. Though it didn’t take long before the first customers arrived after the doors had been opened, and then more, and soon the waitress had more than enough work to do.

Oh, I suppose I was wrong Berthold thought, a small smile spread across his face as he moved about the bar, cleaning it and the assortment of booze bottles that had been strategically placed upon it. Not a lot of people would be drinking at this hour, but he was here for those few who felt so inclined. Though he was certainly ready to help where there need of him in the dining area.

It was then that he noticed a certain someone entering. Though she clearly hadn’t noticed him. He couldn’t help but chuckle at that, he knew it had been a long time, but THAT long, he didn’t think so. He slung the cleaning cloth over his shoulder, and left the bar, moving quietly but quickly over to the little lady who had just entered. “And who do we have here?” he mused in a mischievous tone. “Young lady, people under the legal drinking age have to be accompanied by an adult.”

It was a dark and dreary midday. The clouds hung low and heavily above the harbor city. A sigh escaped from Berthold as he took a peek through the windows of the first floor within the red house. “Oh, I suppose I shouldn’t expect a lot of guests today.” He mumbled, he could hear clinging and clanging downstairs. It brought a smile to his face, this was the beautiful melody of productivity from his staff as it prepared to open for the day.

“Eirlys, be a dear and make sure the flowers are in tip-top shape, would you?” He glanced towards his Roselia who nodded and went on its way while he finished prepping the last few details of his attire. It was a rather vintage look he had decided upon this day, a white shirt underneath a grey blazer, and black pants with straps on each side. And with glasses neatly resting upon his nose, his mustache neatly groomed, and hair slickly groomed backward, he had to admit he looked rather dabber.

“Now, I wonder when she will arrive.” He mumbled, as he looked around what was his bedroom. Framed pictures hung neatly on the wall beside his bed, his eyes fell upon one of them, in particular, this time. It was a picture taken many years ago, at a different time. He and his wife alongside their oldest and their spouse and, at the time, very young kids.

He gently shook his head, he couldn’t stand and reminisce all day. He walked out of the room, locked the door behind him, then through the small corridor that lead to the stairs going down. He entered the bar area first, he would be running that for today. Though he wasn’t about to check up on it right now, first he moved on and went to check the kitchen. “Everything coming along?” He asked, quickly poking his head in. Though the only response he got was a ‘sure thing, boss’ and a thumbs up. Ever the focused individual his cook was. He then moved on to the dining area, where his would-be waitress was doing the last of the cleaning and setting up for the day alongside his Roselia.

Berthold noticed how delighted the Lilligant was, and it brought a smile to his lips. It was always such a joy to bring cheer to the world. And the happiness he now carried gave him the strength to carry on through the next path. Dandelion spores spread gently in the wind. His Frosmoth tried to dodge them at first but found it a daunting task that bordered on the impossible, in the end, she gave in and allowed some of them to hit her. Berthold made no such attempts, instead, he walked calmly through, letting some of them settle upon him.

It came as no surprise to him when the next Pokémon to appear was a Jumpluff. It was clear to him that she was as delighted to see him as he was of her. The Frosmoth though trying to seem delighted was more annoyed by the spores, which it was frantically trying to get off.

“Another gift? My, you are all so generous. Thank you very much” Berthold gratefully took the box that the Jumpluff offered him. He gave a courteous nod as he spoke. “Now, if you will excuse us. We must make a choice.” He looked at both left and right, both had their ups and downs, at least the right seemed deceptively straight. “Hmmm. Are we just going to pick right from now on?” A short glance towards Eira gave him no answer other than an uncertain shrug. “Well, I do believe we are.” And with that, they walked down the straight right path.

Berthold couldn’t help but laugh a bit. It was nice to feel the unbridled belief in him that this boy seemed to have. But, the endless enthusiasm seemed to halt for a bit when the question of goals was directed back to him.

While Berthold listened to the boy’s answer, he found a fair bit of trash, so much in fact that the second trash bag was half full by the time Toshiaki was done talking. And with that, the beach seemed to be clean or at least cleaner than when they had begun. It’s sand sparkling in competition with the ocean itself.

Berthold gave a very approving nod. “Indeed!” Berthold replied. “Life is all about what you make of it!” Berthold spoke wisely. If only he could claim to have had it all as figured out as Toshiaki had, back when he was that young. “And, I hope you get to experience all you want from life and achieve the goals you decide on, though for a young man like you, I am certain you will!” An encouraging tone in his voice

With another look out over the beach he concluded that their job was probably done here. “Well, I believe the beach has been properly cleaned now.” He hoisted the one and a half trash bags, one in each hand, and then said. “It was a pleasure talking with you. I hope to see you around someday, Toshiaki!” And with his farewells said, he went to turn in his trash bags and continue with his day.

Berthold listened patiently to the boy, while they both went about doing their ‘job.’ He wasn’t surprised by the fact the boy came from another region. It was normal for youngsters like that to travel abroad. Even he had done so back in his younger years. He nodded acknowledging when the Toshiaki spoke about PokéAthlon. While he hadn’t participated in that before, he had met a few athletes back in the day. Now that he thought about it, that was back in Johto, hmm a weird coincidence, but nothing more.

Then Toshiaki went on to speak about how he had a bunch of Pokémon and new goals, and such. It was all the things that made the eyes of youngsters sparkle. He couldn’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia as he remembered the good ol’ days when he had been like that.

He chuckled when the question was directed at him. “Why, yes I do. I love Pokémon.” He noticed the fullness of his trash bag and decided to close it and tie a knot on it, before fetching a new one. “I used to be quite the trainer.” An ounce of pride found its way into his voice, soon followed by a sigh. “Alas, I can’t make such claims any longer. I am long past my prime.”

A small pause emerged for a few seconds before Berthold decided on what to say. “I do hope you reach your goals, and if I may be so bold. What is it you wish to achieve?” He unfolded the new trash bag and began to pick up what little trash was in his vicinity.

A Roselia appeared before the trainer and Pokémon. “I suppose this means we were correct?” Berthold looked for hints from the Roselia but got nothing but an indication to go onward. And so he did alongside the Frosmoth which flew slightly behind him.

The further they got into the maze, the more flowers there seemed to appear. It was a beautiful sight, and both trainer and Pokémon took their sweet time enjoying the views and smells until another Grass-type stood before them. This time it was a Lilligant holding a small boxed present. The Pokémon held the box towards Berthold. He looked slightly confused at first, but at last, he muttered. “For me?” He took the box that was handed to him. “Well, thank you very much.”

Berthold looked behind the Grass-type and saw that the path diverged again. “Say, Eira. Do you think right will be the correct path again?” Berthold smiled towards the hovering moth Pokémon. It shook its head, clearly not a believer. “Ah, don’t want to feel responsible if we get lost, eh?” Berthold joked. “Very well, let’s go with Right again.” And so Pokémon and trainer began to walk down the path hoping it would be the correct choice.

Berthold and the Frosmoth moved on. For what seemed like ages, but was probably just about thirty minutes of walking, did they continue. Until they reached an old store. He recognized this place, even with its broken windows, a faded sign, and clear signs of someone having rummaged through it. It was a flower shop he had visited with his wife.

An old memory sprung into his mind. Oh, how he remembered it so vibrantly. The store had just opened for the day, an old woman, a Roserade, and a Roselia were the ones running the place, and both were setting up bouquets outside. Berthold and his beloved wife had been walking down the streets happily enjoying life as they readied to leave Slateport. An attractive smell of roses had drawn them to the shop. She had fallen in love with the flowers and begged him for a bouquet. But at the time money was tight, and yet he found it in his heart to splurge it on her, he could never say no to her, he would simply forego a few meals, a small price to pay for her smile.

A familiar scent pulled him out of the memory and into reality. Impossible… He thought. He moved through the broken window, careful not to get cut upon the sharp glass which had been left behind while doing so signaling to the Frosmoth to stay put. Inside he found not flowers, but a Pokémon. All alone, sitting upon the floor sobbing. It was a Roselia. “I am sorry to intrude, but I couldn’t help but notice the smell of flowers.” He spoke calmly to let the Roselia know of its presence.

The Grass/Poison-type quickly wiped away its tears and got up, turning to the intruder, ready to fight.

“Oh, I do not wish to fight. I visited this place once, long ago.” He spoke holding up his hands to show he wasn’t intent on fighting. He looked around now that he was inside. He saw a picture of the old woman, the Roserade and the Roselia, and then there was an additional thing, an egg. But the picture was faded and old. “You wouldn’t happen to be related to the Roselia and Roserade that used to live here, would you?” Berthold asked.

The Roselia looked suspicious but nodded. It pointed towards the egg in the picture.

“I thought so. It’s a shame what has happened to the place.” Berthold stated. “Now, this is bold of me to say. But You don’t seem to be in a happy place right now. If you have no one here. Would you perhaps be interested in joining me and my team?” As he asked he walked closer, the Roselia didn’t seem apprehensive about the idea, so he gently placed a Pokéball in front of it, giving her the choice of letting it capture her or not.

If she decided to join them, he would bring along the picture of her family. It was the least he could do to give her some familiarity on the way.
