He held her throat until she stopped moving. Dark blips of red dropped against her clothes and skin, having finally coalesced enough against his shirt to slip through, like he was a cloud of crimson rain.

Arms shaking, he blinked his eyes rapidly against the darkness that careened in like a train. Instead of standing, valiant, he toppled, prone on the ground, the fall of his body making a wet splat against the ring floor.

The woman’s Lucario no doubt had enough common sense to collect her and take her to safety. Likewise, Onyx’s Gardevoir, Amplexus, eventually came out of his Pokeball and did the same with his own trainer-- after the arena staff had dragged both their sorry bodies off to the side and hurled them into the tunnel to make room for the next bout.

Onyx kicked his bare feet through the cold sand, shoes in one hand, darkening night sky above him. Cicatrice purred a note from somewhere nearby and then zipped across his field of view, a blip of light like a fallen star, careening towards the water.

Onyx was here for the sole purpose of getting a Galarian Zigzagoon. He'd sorta-kinda always secretly wanted one and the safari advertisement for them had almost manifested in his brain in a dream.

There were other reasons he was here, of course. Contexts. Aims. But the Zigzagoon was the most important one.

The Sanctuary had a peaceful air to it, despite the chaos of flapping wings and cawing birds, that Onyx felt decidedly uncomfortable in. He reached up and touched the brown contact in his good eye, sweeping black-dyed hair behind one ear as he approached the front desk.

“Jett Black, here for the gym challenge,” he said to the attendant, handing over his fake ID with a small smile. Something had changed in him between his last challenge and this one-- he was much more relaxed, able to slip into his good Hoenn boy Jett Black guise easier than he’d been when he challenged Josh Devlin .

The attendant handed him his ID back and waved him through. Down a short corridor and out into a room with no ceiling, just the bright blue Hoennian sky and the sun beaming down around them. A flick of his wrist and his Pokemon appeared, one on either side of him; he’d decided to go with the theme of the hour, Flying, and chosen his Aerodactyl and, of course, his ride or die, Ziadem.

The raven quorked curiously and stalked off to investigate something nearby; Petra yawned and stretched her wings while they waited for the gym leader.

Shadows solidify out of the miasmatic background behind the trees, taking the shapes of small children. The giggling that surrounds them weaves in and out of the foliage, sounding more ominous and pressing by the second.

“Why do you say that like you’re about to do something stupid?” Onyx asked, instinctively cupping a hand around the back of the unconscious child’s head, before turning to look over his shoulder and around Andres’ body. “What the fuck is happening. Ignis!”

The Ponyta whirls and a wall of inferno shoots up in the path of the encroaching children, filling the air with the sound of roaring flames. Onyx hopes that will buy them some time. “We should keep running.” But he wasn’t going anywhere without Andres.
