Onyx manages a weak wheeze of an exhaling laugh, not at Lam’s expense, but in kindred spirits, as his own Pokemon take the beautiful opportunity afforded them and fucks it up completely.

Wave after wave of sharply compressed air hits the Pinsir. Once he’s reached terminal velocity it just adds slices to his carapace; brown fragments break and slough away, olive-green blood spitting out into the air, and then--

The heatwave buzzes a section of air that Lucan easily avoids-- there’s a slow-mo scene of him looking at Pops through the warped filter of superheated air-- and then he’s whirling around to land a final strike with guillotine, wings disappearing afterwards with a disintegrating flash…

The Mega-Machamp quickly turned her momentum around, flying at Lucan without the benefit of wings, and clocking the Bug-type upside the head. He went up, up, up and down, down, down in a neat arc, slamming into the ground, and struggling to pick himself up.

Onyx rested a hand over the Mega-stone in his pocket and the white energy that sluiced through his Pinsir burst away layers of damaged carapace, revealing buzzing wings, still slightly damp from the metamorphosis. Vaulting off one foot, Lucan went flying in again, aiming for the Machamp’s eyes with x-scissor.

The problem with the tried and true strat of charging headfirst into your enemy is that it leaves little room for what could be considered higher intelligence maneuvers.

But he’s still standing. Enough to engage the Shaymin with a zig-zagging flight pattern (wow, he is capable of learning, Onyx thinks), to slice at him with X-Scissor.

He couches his head-horns and flies at the Pikachu with a charging superpower.

A long, long time ago, Onyx was the type of person-- the type of trainer-- who would get mad about things like this. His Pokemon’s constant stream of failures would have riled him up to an angry, fever pitch, and the poor creatures would have born the brunt of his temper, not in any true physical or verbal abuse, mind, but simply in the mere act of repetitive training until perfection was achieved, the sting of this failure burnt deep into their tired bones, so as not to forget it.

Today, Onyx merely cranks one side of his mouth up in a confused look, then exhales a short, humorless laugh, and recalls his Pokemon. There are more battles to fight, and certainly more failure to be wrought, and at the end of it all they’ll come back and go through it, as a team.

He does wonder where the old Onyx went. Wonders if he’s dead in the ground, somewhere.

“Yeah,” he says, on a long, long, almost pleasurable, exhale of relief. You don’t realize how much your leg hurts with the bullet still lodged in your muscle until it’s out. Amplexus flicks his hand, giving Onyx permission to do whatever he’s going to do, before striding across the kitchen to the living space to tend to Andres’ hurts, whatever they may be.

Onyx wads up the collar of his shirt and stuffs it in his mouth, not confident in his ability to not wail like a banshee, and slaps the red-hot knife over the wound. The blood and flesh sizzles, the pain is white hot and makes him go light-headed. His scream is muffled by the fabric between his teeth, and then he’s throwing the knife in the sink with a loud clanging noise and trying to ignore the faint scent of burnt meat.

“Not really,” he says, as the soggy cotton falls away from his mouth. He breaths in fast pants for a few seconds, silver sparks clearing from his vision, before pushing himself off the countertop on his good leg and hobble-hopping using chairs, table, then couch, to where Andres is sitting.

“Are you all right?” he asks, palms braced on the arm of the couch as he guides himself around to the front to sit.

The Scyther backing off put Lucan at a disadvantage. He had stubby little legs and noodly little arms-- good for close range grappling, but he did not have a ranged attack one in his playbook.

The vacuum wave at a distance lifted him up and spun him around like clothes in a washing machine. It was only by Onyx touching the Mega-stone in his pocket and activating the transformation that Lucan was able to break free of the windy assault, wings bursting from his back in a spray of olive-yellow blood, as he couched his horn and flew towards the Scyther with another superpower.
