Xiura sat cross-legged on a spread-out picnic blanket on the pier, a compact box of fishing gear and tackle on one side, and a tray of fruit-and-cream sandwiches and boxes of juice on the other. Her shining purple rod was perfectly still and ramrod-straight as her neglected hook and lure floated atop the rippling surface of the water. The sea was wide and open, a cool, sea salt-fragrant breeze whispering past. Wingulls and Pelippers honked high overhead, searching for their next meal.

She turned to the girl beside her, Naomi Sato , and said, "Hmm, how long do you think this usually takes?"

Just then, she felt a violent tug on her pole!

"Boo!" Xiura exclaimed as she popped out from behind an open door upstairs, armed with a smile and a flashlight. Hatterene also shimmered into view, teleporting from somewhere even Xiura wasn't sure of.

"Hi, Bishop!" she said sunnily, stepping down the stairs to greet the newcomer, shining her flashlight over the expanse of the back mudroom. "It's nice to meet you." The hale man before her with his Obstagoon looked like a strong partnership for this mission. The rundown of the mission was pretty straightforward, and Xiura was fairly confident she and Hatterene could handle themselves. Having a paired Rocket companion in addition was even more cause for self-assuredness.

"They're over here," she said, Hatterene levitating behind her as she showed him down the hallway of the ground floor, turning right into an old-fashioned room with an ashen, unlit fireplace. She briefly swept her flashlight over the room: a couple of armchairs diagonally angled towards the fireplace, a small coffee table between them, and in one corner, the inventory they were defending. Steel kennels of variegated sizes were piled atop one another, housing all manner of Galarian Pokemon. A small Ponyta whinnied from behind metal bars, and a Slowpoke slept, a bubble repeatedly growing and shrinking from one nostril. A brown, very hairy Galarian Meowth lay down on their side as if bored with the situation, and Xiura took out a rose-pink poffin to give him, slipping him pieces through the wire mesh of his kennel.

"I'd keep this one if I could," she theater-whispered to Bishop.

Incineroar stands ready at the top of the turnbuckle, barking out a growling laugh as his green-eyed gaze laser-focuses on Beau Fontaine, the man still prone on the mat of the wrestling ring.

Xiura calls out, "Incineroar has taken prime position at the corner of the ring! His eyes are blazing with imminent triumph! But will he succeed in pulling off what appears to be a Shooting Star Press?"

The ominous announcement precedes Incineroar's mighty battle roar as he crouches down and springs powerfully into the air. The fire pokemon, belt blazing with flame, performs a full, 180-degree backflip mid-air, before spreading all his limbs outward to bodyslam Beau with all the intimidating ferocity of an incoming meteor.

With a loud, earthshaking thud, Incineroar successfully lands on his muscular opponent, the feline creature's palms and knees slamming into the mat, suspension springs beneath cushioning his fall.

"He did it! And there he goes for the pin!" Incineroar hooks an arm under Beau's knee, getting him in a sturdy hold and pinning him down.

"The challenger, this broad-shouldered and buff Beastly Butcher, has been pinned to the mat! Will he stay down? Will he stay down! One... two..." Xiura starts counting aloud, observing the pair from her position beside the ring.

Xiura waved a friendly hello at Noah Camus as their small gathering grew. "You're a Ranger Captain?" she asked in an impressed tone. "You must do a lot of good work to help Pokémon." She couldn't help but laugh at @marshall's exuberant greeting to the newcomer, and she shot Tam Fawley a small grin. She felt pretty happy to have easily assimilated into a group at such a large event full of unfamiliar people; simultaneously, she was quite relieved to have approached Marshall in the first place.

"Do you think we'll really get to meet Melody Miro?" she asked Marshall, tugging at his sleeve to briefly get his attention.

And to her surprise, her friend Naomi Sato appeared out of the fray with a cheerful greeting.

"It's good to see you too, Nomi! Have you been to one of these before?" she said, trying to be heard over the music

Suddenly, a flurry of ketchup packets were catapulted into the air from the stage, where a mega-evolved Toxtricity had appeared. Confused but excited to be present for such a unique event, Xiura cheered, "Adrian!" along with the rest of the crowd.

Xiura didn't often receive personal phone calls, but when she saw the distinctive name of Aurelie Lefevre on her digital screen, she immediately picked up.

"Hi, Aurelie, how are you?" she said, a genuine smile in her voice.

This smiling expression swiftly transitioned into a furrowed brow of confusion as she listened to Aurelie's description of an upcoming Pokemon contest with a dance routine. But for a man's pair of Persians? She wondered how in the world Aurelie could have gotten roped into such an odd and fantastical request, especially as a forger.

She tentatively answered, "I haven't had experience choreographing for Pokemon before, but I'm sure I could help come up with a routine! We did take traditional dance classes back in Ecruteak, to round out our skills at the teahouse. The other girls and I, that is."

Xiura glanced over at Incineroar, who was taking an impromptu afternoon siesta at a booth in the corner of the cafe. Not very professional, but it was a slow day, anyway.

"If anyone, I'm sure Incineroar can invent elegant feline moves for their routine!" she said loudly, emphasizing the Pokemon's name. The fiery Pokemon exuded passion no matter what he did, especially physical activity.

Reacting to Xiura's sudden increase in volume, Incineroar rumbled lowly, still in the midst of sleep. His tail twitched in irritation, then settled down again.

Xiura very nearly rolled her eyes, but contained herself. "Just let me know where you want to meet! Maybe there's a dance hall or community center nearby we can use."

Xiura keeps watch with Hatterene as Jack embraces Watts. The wind grazes both of them, cold in the descending twilight. Xiura is glad that the Boltund is there to comfort Jack, because she herself isn't sure how. She mulls over how strange it is, to experience death beside someone she just met the same day.

She hugs her knees to herself against the impending chill of evening. Hatterene is close, reaching out her clawed appendage to touch her shoulder. She cries out softly, clearly sensing the frenetic ripples of upset from Jack's emotions.

"Thanks, Hatterene, you did well," Xiura says quietly, allowing Hatterene back into her Pokeball.

She hears voices, then, and sees flashlights from the rescue team coming to meet them. She stands and waves her hands high, calling them over.

Someone puts a blanket over Jack, and hands one to Xiura. The next thirty minutes to an hour are a blur—the voices and the lights; a helicopter arrives, blades whipping the air as the occupants lower a stretcher for Arin's remains. Jack and Xiura are brought back to the trail one way or another, and ushered into a crowded jeep to bring them back to the city.

Soberly, Xiura catches Jack's eye, and nods to him. We got through this, she wants to say. We will get through this. She settles for briefly squeezing his forearm as the night falls black over Route 119.
