Now that the mission was over, Ollie could properly pay attention to the differences in jack wainwright. He'd known Jack for years. He couldn't put a pin on it, but it seemed like something was different.

[break][break] But before he could get his thoughts out, the other Ranger was already getting on his Corvilknight and flying off.

[break][break] Ollie frowned. Maybe he should put some time in his schedule to have a lunch with him one of these days. Or see if paxton concordas could give a referral to that therapist that he loved so much.

[break][break] War was on the horizon, but there was still something more important than that to Ollie — his Ranger would always take priority.

[break][break] "Maggie?" he said, grabbing his phone. "Put a block on my schedule for next week. I want to have lunch with an old friend."

[break][break] Listening to the ex-Elite Four's words, Ollie nods. His throat is thick with trepidation.

[break][break] There are so many things he wants to ask kyle lopez. Wants to ask him what happened up there on that mountain, wants to ask how he saved MATIAS SILPH, wants to ask what MATIAS SILPH meant when he said the answer to everything was Kyle.

[break][break] But he doesn't say any of those things. He says, instead, the only thing that he's managed to think of in the past several hours, the one thought that can't help but bleed into any other:

It reminded him more of the stress-free days of his youth, trainee uniformed smucked in mud, laughing at Laurence Anderson bedhead as their Ranger mentors called them out at early dawn.

[break][break] How nice it was — to not have to worry about anything. To not have to be dragged left and right for meeting after boring meeting.

[break][break] Ollie didn't know how people like Gunner Graves and paxton concordas did it all the time.

[break][break] However, whatever breezy conversation they were about to have was significantly dampened by the topic at hand, but Ollie was at least grateful that Beau Fontaine was the one to deliver the news. He'd seen plenty of it in the reports that made it to his desk already, but there was something else about hearing it outloud from the Ponyta's mouth, so to speak.

[break][break] "A LARP outfit?" Ollie echoed, making a mental note to look through the piles of reports on his desk to see if anything rang a bell. "Think you could draw it? Or - I could see if Pax could pull up a sketch artist."

[break][break] Ollie frowned.

[break][break] But his stomach hurt to think about it. Because he knew that not all Rockets were bad, that they were just people, like Isaac Merlo had said.

[break][break] He pieced apart his meal as a distraction, stabbing a fork into what appeared to be some oily noodles.

[break][break] "I wish I coulda been there, I - " He shook his head. Eduardo Hisakawa would've smacked him up the head for that one. Ollie couldn't be everywhere after all. He cleared his throat. "What do ya reckon they were lookin' for?"

[break][break] There were plenty of rangers that didn't have a dedicated "home-base", besides. Ollie knew that he hadn't had one, back when he'd started with Laurence Anderson.

[break][break] Disappointment flickered in his face at the other man's reserved response regarding the Amnesty Program. While he never held it against anyone, he wished that there would be more supporters, so he would have good news to tell people like freya morningstar or Caleb Harcourt.

[break][break] Speaking of...

[break][break] Ollie blinked rapidly at the mention of freya morningstar.

[break][break] "Wait - " Ollie spluttered. "Does that mean you and Freya are related?"

[break][break] "Wait dragons?"

[break][break] And then, suddenly, he was reminded of the Morningstar name. Oh duh. He should've known.

"I couldn't agree more! You know, actually, I was thinking of —"

[break][break] Before he could get the words Ranger Captain out of his mouth, however, it seemed that there exit was in sight.

[break][break] "Woah guys, slow down! Don't trip!"

[break][break] But the group of Slowpoke that they were escorting seemed all too eager with their paradise now in sight, and quickly scurried over to the water's edge, ignoring the Head Ranger's warnings. Luckily, though, there weren't any imminent dangers in the area that would provide an additional hurdle; a fact that Ollie was relieved for.

[break][break] With that out of the way, Ollie turned to him. His stomach growled. Loudly.

[break][break] "Ugh. Actually, I'm starving now. Think we'll have some time to catch some grub before ya have to go back? I know a killer burger join nearby."

[break][break] But without waiting for a yes or a no, Ollie threw an arm around his friend's shoulder, already steering them towards an exit.

Once on his Dragonite, Ollie turns to offer a hand to the other to help get mounted. Not many people find it as easy as he did — then again, they hadn't had as much experience with large creatures like that either.

[break][break] And with that — shortly — they were off.

[break][break] Probably not, but Ollie didn't want to risk getting the young child injured in the process of trying to tame them. He'd have to come back later to make sure they were properly dealt with — and then he could make sure to get her pendant in the process.

[break][break] Leading her backwards, slowly, towards the exit, he leaned closer to her.

[break][break] "I promise ya with my Ranger badge that I'll get your pendant. Just ask for the name Ollie Morales at the tent - "

[break][break] Before he could say much else, however, it seemed that the Toxapex's group leader had spotted them. Something ominous glowed around the pokemon and Ollie's hands closed protectively around the girl's shoulder.

[break][break] Shoot. They'd been spotted.

[break][break] "But for now, we run!"

[break][break] And with that, the Head Ranger sprinted, holding his hand tight, to make sure that she followed him to safety.
