annalise starts to laugh, but the bolt of pain along her side snuffs out the amusement she gains from his answer. she draws a shallow, tentative breath, uncertain of her limits now. to her surprise, ollie morales actually seems to be entertaining her request. she perks up like a wilted flower recently watered, straightening up in bed as much as her aching body will allow. when Greyson Connors returns, so will sensibility — so she takes this opportunity now like a door left open by accident. MATIAS SILPH is so unpredictably, consistently strange. his advice pulls a little scoff out of her, one that turns white as it twists from her lips and dissolves into the air. he sidesteps her second snowball with aggravating ease and they both watch it disappear into the blanket of snow behind him. [break][break]he's so annoying. [break][break]"you're sooo annoying."[break][break]she picks up another handful of snow and stalks across the yard towards him. her fingers turn red as the snowball begins to melt against the heat of her skin, but she's not going to waste it by whiffing another throw. [break][break]instead, she tries to grab the fabric of his jacket to keep him from getting away from this one.

she missed a lot. [break][break] and it's a lot to process. she sits there quietly, digesting each piece of news spoonfed to her. ollie morales is head ranger now. he went to some ancient tomb — why? she wonders — and got promoted for that. or got promoted by some internal politics. [break][break]she wonders how much ollie knows about penny and matias and what they did to his sister, but the thought of bringing it up here and now is an exhausting prospect. she reaches for something easier: [break][break] "congrats."[break][break] and she means it, even though it sounds divorced from her brand of enthusiastic sincerity. [break][break] "how's the paperwork treating you?"[break][break] she ignores every screaming impulse to shy away from the hand reaching for her face. it's ollie, she thinks, he wouldn't hurt her. she pivots from his well wishes, unsure of how to address them.[break][break] "do you think you can flex your new title and get me out of here early?" [break][break]her voice is so flat that the question could be a request or a joke or somewhere in between.

[attr="class","body"]annalise follows paxton concordas off the ship, pushing wet hair out of her face as they brave the sudden storm. kyogre's roar rings through rain-choked air and the storm worsens in reply. she squints through the downpour to make out the legendary pokemon's shape between the cliffs, then nods to her partner. [break][break]as his magnezone charges its zap cannon, she calls out her togekiss. the fairy-type puffs out his feathers uselessly against the rain, then lowers himself down so his equally soggy trainer can clamber onto his back. she turns her head to look at paxton, heeding his warning with a solemn look. [break][break]"i'll try not to," she says, skirting around any real promises. and to her togekiss, she commands him to fly with a "let's go!"[break][break] she directs her togekiss over the cliffs, then drops any pretense of attempting to not get reckless. they twinkle suddenly, distractingly bright even against the storm. kyogre turns its attention away from joules, attracted by the fairy-type's follow me.[break][break]several blue orbs manifest in the air where kyogre resurfaces, then fire out as more beams of origin pulse. the pair dive behind a cliff, then togekiss reappears. riderless.

[break][break]the reverent moment is poisoned by Remiel Calcifet 's presence. her fingers curl tight over the badge at his question, obscuring the letters beneath. she rises to her feet and stares past the brilliance of his flashlight to his vague silhouette. [break][break]"do you even actually care?" [break][break] the flash of hostility in her voice bids her houndoom back from the shadows, hackles raised.

"okay," she says, sounding somewhat confused, but places her hands over her ears as instructed. the simulation unfurls into a jungle rich with foliage and little prehistoric pokemon. the muffled-yet-grating screech of the scream tail ahead of them slips past her crude attempt at deafening herself to it. annalise doesn't typically pay much attention to the middlemen getting her package to the door, but she tries to think if she's heard of the name anyways. in any case, the knowledge that june sleigh owns her own business makes annalise's own pitch that much sweeter. [break][break]she accepts the business card, examining the information written on it as june gets through the rest of her pitch with nervous laughter. there's room for improvement, she thinks, though she doesn't comment on the design. instead, she tucks the card into the pocket of her ranger jacket. [break][break]"you've sold me," she tells june with a small smile. [break][break]
"i have a lot of packages coming in and out of this hq and i think it's about time i get a dedicated service instead of making the rookies do it."[break][break]
plus, it's a small price to pay to bankroll june away from any more warfronts. annalise could try and make sure at least one of them lives a semi-normal life. she holds out her hand.[break][break]
"what do you say, um — ?" she winces, realizing they had never properly introduced themselves to each other, or she had already forgotten her name. "sorry, i don't think i got your name."

[break][break]but greyson is smart. his words are like water over the fire in her chest. as his hand clasps over hers, she just feels crazy in an impotent, i think i've majorly overreacted way. [break][break]annalise blinks up at him. [break][break]" ... i'd like that, thank you." her voice mirrors his, soft and yielding. she shares his unspoken uncertainty — is she ready for all of that? — but that's an issue for later. it's always an issue for later. for now, they would go and eat and pretend she didn't just hack the shit out of her hair. [break][break]"okay," she agrees, voice small, fingers loosening their tight grip on the scissors. after a stretch of uncomfortable silence, they arrive at the mouth of the cave. the tera crystals jutting out from the plain rock glow in welcome of their presence, but somewhere beyond the allure of the twinkling lights is the persistent smell of decay. she wrinkles her nose. [break][break]"yeah."[break][break]she rolls a poke ball into her palm and releases her houndoom. he needs little instruction to get to work, claws clicking against stone as he puts his nose to the ground and pads further into the cave. the ranger captain follows after, relying on her phone flashlight rather than Remiel Calcifet 's assistance. [break][break]
the houndoom's odor sleuth quickly picks up a scent. they find a body slumped against a rock, barely recognizable after a pokemon attack. annalise stops short, drawing the back of her hand over her nose, then bends down once the rush of nausea wears away. [break][break]delicate fingers work their ranger badge off their tattered uniform.
