[break][break] she turns back to the coffee-making station, regarding the other woman for a moment before she runs through the answers to each question. [break][break]but she had. only because MATIAS SILPH had been there. she dissociates from the memory of it as she speaks — like she's just telling june about the weather forecast instead. annalise joins ollie morales by the fledgling fire smoking in the fireplace, arms crossed. she hums a noncommittal sound in the back of her throat, acknowledging his explanation. [break][break]she stares transfixed as the flames catch on the wood, crawling along the cracks in charred bark. but its the heat of his gaze on that she feels on the side of her face, prevising sentimental words before they leave his lips.[break][break]"i've been okay for a while," she says dismissively, watching the fire pop as one of the logs splits. her fingers tighten on her biceps. she's so tired of being pitied.[break][break]"but ... " annalise stops, mulling over her words. she shakes her head eventually. [break][break]"never mind."

she doesn't come to league hq often, but her meeting with ollie morales makes the stars align perfectly for a coincidental encounter. she descends the steps with her head down, phone in hand, and only sees the snowball once it's exploding into powder against her ranger uniform.

her hand smooths over her jacket, flicking melting snow off her fingertips with a twist of her wrist, as she looks up to find the culprit. it's both a surprise and no surprise at all to see MATIAS SILPH with the smoking gun.[break][break]"can't you just say hello like a normal person?" [break][break]
but she doesn't brush him off this time. instead, she palms a fistful of snow off the railing and throws one back at him.

it's been a long time since she's been in league hq, but she still remembers the route to take to illeana reyes 's office. she stops in front of her door, unconsciously reaching a hand for her now-healed side. she doesn't want to be here. she doesn't want to hear how sorry the league is that she was captured. and she doesn't want to have to lie to the head professor's face again, either.[break][break] with a breath, she resigns herself to it, knocking on the door. "hi." annalise slips into the room upon illeana's invitation, lingering near the door. she's more ghost than ranger captain, a shadow of the girl who used to eagerly attend illeana's aqua meetings. "you wanted to see me?"

annalise offers june sleigh a small, sympathetic smile that looks more perfunctory than sincere. her face flushes dark with what she assumes is embarrassment, but the ranger captain is too tired to care enough to offer paltry reassurances. [break][break]"anonymous?" [break][break]her first, unsettling thought is that someone from rocket sent her this to toy with her. as quickly as the anxiety washes over her, she tries to think rationally: it's probably from Greyson Connors . or ollie morales . or any number of people who know she's returned to work. and even once her skull is filled to bursting with these rewired thoughts, she still feels the original one simmering somewhere beneath.

"that's weird," she follows up, voice neutral. she takes up the pen and scrawls her flowery signature for june, looking up as she draws the tail from muscle memory to regard the delivery woman and her hypothetical question.

"hmmm, i think i could hook that someone up with some coffee. it's not, like, good coffee, but it's free. and there's milk."
[break][break]
she steps aside and sweeps a welcoming gesture to the coffee machine behind her. that should be the end of it, but annalise's thoughts get stuck on the cast the woman is wearing. is she another traumatized civilian thrust into war, she wonders, or did she just fall down some stairs?[break][break]"i was in a cast like that last year," she starts idly. "when are you getting yours off?"

snow spills into the ranger outpost once they finally get the door unstuck. with a little grunt of effort, annalise squeezes into the room, leaving a series of slick, sleet-lined footprints across the floor as she finds the light switch and retreats further in. [break][break]
"i didn't expect the weather to get so bad so fast," she sighs out. a finger traces the thin layer of dust that's settled over the table in front of her, creating aimless symbols. ever since she came back, she hasn't had much interest in keeping idle conversation afloat. [break][break]but for ollie morales , she tries. [break][break]"did you get snow like this in kalos?"

the conversation dies. annalise lets it. [break][break]she turns back towards the ocean, leaning her forearms on the railing. it reminds her of the hunt for the mirage island, of illeana reyes and mint frost creating a situation as equally as chaotic as hunting a god. her short hair whips in her face, but she doesn't have paxton concordas 's privilege of tying it up and out of the way anymore. [break][break]she gives him the respect of turning back to face him when he begins his brief, quietly digesting the mission at hand.
