Though Zev was not a fan of sweets, the decadent aroma of the tiramisu piqued his curiosity. He followed Nenet into the kitchen, partially to investigate her latest concoction, and partially because he wanted to kiss her. After a long day, nothing relaxed him more than her touch. [break][break]

He did not even wait for her to finish hanging the towel before he wrapped his hands around her waist from behind. Dipping his head, he pressed his lips against her skin, where her neck and shoulder met. He lingered for a moment to breathe in her scent. [break][break]

Already, he could feel the tension seeping from his body. [break][break]

Nenet's inquiry forced Zev to lift his head so he could look her in the eye. "I've been tasked with overseeing the war effort here in Hoenn," he explained matter-of-factly, seeing no reason to sugarcoat his words or ease into the topic. [break][break]

"My official title now is God General, and I'll be on equal footing with the underbosses." Which meant he was only one step away from Rocket Boss itself.

Zev had sent that text to Nenet earlier that afternoon, after the conclusion of the conversation between Team Rocket's leadership over encrypted channels. The promotion to God General had been a surprise, yet Walsh's and Monroe's reasoning was sound. Zev was the best candidate for the role, considering his former military experience, assistance with Kanto's takeover, and recent work as a Beast. [break][break]

He did not anticipate that his wife cared much. As he walked through the front door of her apartment, he expected to see her cooking in the kitchen, typing at her laptop, or reading her tablet on the couch. [break][break]

The crowd of Rockruff and one Yamper that greeted him was normal. Ignoring them, he removed his shoes and tossed his keys into a bowl by the door. "I'm home," he called out.

"There never was," Zev replied. His breathing was even and steady, as if their battle just now hadn't tired him at all. "It's about time you finally understood that, Isaac." [break][break]

Conversation was normally pointless in the middle of combat, but it bought Zev time to rethink his strategy. Isaac moved with the speed of the wind and the fluidity of water; his Avatarship made him a slippery creature, capable of evading Zev's attempts to capture him. [break][break]

Which meant Zev had to take away Isaac's movement.

Zev had mentally prepared himself for a sudden drop in his energy levels after the laser beam. After the first time he'd used that power, it left him so fatigued that he'd struggled to remain standing. It was a major flaw in design and an unfortunate setback. As such, he'd relegated use of the ability only to circumstances where he could easily recharge or had allies to defend him. [break][break]

This time, however, the exhaustion did not come. Zev stood nearly to his knees in the soft sand, his body slowly reverting back to normal blood and tissue. He blinked in wonder and stared down at his right arm, still transformed into the cannon shape. [break][break]

"I feel fine," he admitted. Willing his arm back to its normal form, he started pulling himself out of the hole he'd created. "Normally that kind of attack requires an extensive recovery period afterward, but not this time, it seems." [break][break]

How mystifying. How thrilling.

THE FINAL CLASH

AS SOON AS THE FINAL ROUND BEGINS, kepler brueshaber releases his CINDERACE and MEGA EVOLVES it. Immediately, it uses AGILITY to raise its speed, then BOUNCES high into the air. This strategy gives Fenelle Miller time to summon her GRIMMSNARL, who endures the impact of the bunny's crash to FAKE IT OUT. [break][break]

In retaliation, MEGA CINDERACE launches a PYRO BALL, just as GRIMMSNARL reaches out with its hairs to LEECH LIFE from the rodent. The hairs pull MEGA CINDERACE close for a BITE, but a CLOSE COMBAT keeps GRIMMSNARL at bay. [break][break]

AGILITY frees up MEGA CINDERACE so it can launch another PYRO BALL at its foe. Frustrated, GRIMMSNARL closes the distance between them with STOMPING TANTRUM followed by SPIRIT BREAK. Thinking quickly, MEGA CINDERACE lashes out with DOUBLE EDGE and FOCUS BLAST, evading another nasty BITE. [break][break]

As GRIMMSNARL'S tendril-like hairs reach for another LEECH LIFE, MEGA CINDERACE BOUNCES high above the battlefield once more. It lands with devastation, a final DOUBLE EDGE blowing right through GRIMMSNARL'S SPIRIT BREAK and subsequent FALSE SURRENDER. A decisive blow, it is more than enough to clinch victory for kepler brueshaber.

END OF THE ROUND

For the last time, an alarm blares and the lights of the arena turn red, while the screen beneath the observation deck reads, "STOP." Zev Harcourt's voice resonates from the loudspeaker with a tone of finality. [break][break]

"The Gauntlet is over, and kepler brueshaber is its winner. Well fought, Executive, and congratulations. You have earned a fully constructed and functioning Genesect of your own, which you can collect in the front lobby."[break][break]

"All participants, including Brueshaber, will receive smaller rewards for their efforts. You can pick these up on your way outside the building."

All the lights return to their normal, yellow-white color, but no bell chimes. Instead, both doors of the arena open, the one leading up to the observation deck and the other leading out the front entrance. Metal bridges extend so that all contestants and members of Rocket leadership can leave.[break][break]

The PVP portion of this event is limited to ROCKET participants who are not canons and/or Avatars.
The separate, non-PVP megathread will be limited to CURRENT ROCKET CANONS and ELIMINATED PARTICIPANTS only.
One character per player may participate.
A character must have at least 50 POSTS to participate.
A character age limit of 18+ is in place for this event's participation.
Each participant may bring FOUR POKÉMON with them into The Gauntlet. Participants must use a different Pokémon on their team each round, switching Pokémon at the start of every new round.
All mechanics/Pokémon (Sygna Suits, Paradox Pokémon, Ultra Beasts, Mega Stones, Tera Orbs, etc.) are allowed EXCEPT DYNAMAX.
Salac berries MAY NOT be used.
PLEASE INCLUDE A TL;DR at the bottom of your posts.

PVP RULES

The outcome of each round will be decided by rolls, but participants are recommended to keep the following guidelines in mind during the event. [break][break]

Avoid godmodding, meaning taking control of another player's character or Pokémon during roleplay. This is sometimes called powerplaying.
Your characters may attempt to physically attack each other; however, remember, Pokémon are always more effective than human-made weapons.

MECHANICS & REWARDS

HOW TO PLAY

As stated, there will be five total rounds: Rounds 0-4. [break][break]

Round 0 is a preparation round that will allow participants to affect their rolls for ROUND 1 ONLY. Rounds 1-4 are PVP rounds for determining the winner of The Gauntlet. [break][break]

All participants must roll at the end of their posts for Rounds 1-4. For Rounds 2-4, each participant adds their rolls together for a total sum. Half of the participants in each round, the ones with the lowest totals, lose the round and cannot move on. Characters who miss the round are automatically eliminated. [break][break]

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

Each round will limit the maximum number of posts each participant can write, based on the number of participants in each round. [break][break]

Round 1: 16 participants (1 post per participant)
Round 2: 8 participants (2 posts per participant)

Zev nodded approvingly. "Good idea with the MIST. It will be better than SANDSTORM out here and put us at an advantage. As for how to get closer…" [break][break]

He plucked two Pokéballs from his belt and opened them, releasing his shiny Zoroark and his Golurk. [break][break]

"We can use an illusion to hide our approach across the desert. To cover this much distance, we'll need to fly." [break][break]

The Golurk leaned down and spread its massive hands. Zev and his Zoroark climbed onto one flat palm, leaving the other one empty for Maki and her Empoleon. Once everyone had boarded, the air around them shimmered with Zoroark's illusion of empty sand dunes. [break][break]

Then the golem took off into the air toward their targets.

With the shiny Dhelmise captured, Zev continued down the trail, following the lake's edge. A Hisuian Qwilfish emerged next from the waters, watching him and his Pokémon with beady eyes. Despite its uncommon coloration, he ignored it. [break][break]

Ahead, a forest loomed tall upon rocky hills. Redirecting his steps, he made his way toward it. His Pokémon followed at an easy pace, keeping alert for anything of interest.

Zev's eyes narrowed at their prisoner's defiance. Such displays of bravado were expected, especially from League officials. They thought themselves on higher moral ground, or possessed an absurd delusion of loyalty to something other than their own survival. [break][break]

They were fools, but at least he could use their weaknesses against them. [break][break]

"You heard him," Zev said, tilting his head in Mark Cunningham's direction. "There's no need to toy with your family's life like this. Give us the information we're looking for, and you can reunite with them. If you're smart, you'll take them and leave the region." [break][break]

When Nenet's grip only tightened and she shot back at Zev in defiance, his eyes narrowed and his muscles rippled with added tension. But he did not raise a hand nor make any moves against her. Instead, blue eyes studied her expression, watching her lips press into a frown. [break][break]

Her next words came out as a whisper. He realized, then, that she was pleading. [break][break]

Nenet never begged. Almost never. [break][break]

Slowly, Zev released the tension from his body. Years of studying human behavior allowed him this recognition: that she was lonely, frightened, vulnerable. That this time, she sought solace from him, despite the fact he was the last person who was fit to give it. [break][break]

It pleased him to know that despite their fractious exchanges on that Megalopolan ship, she still wanted him. And who was he to deny her, when he liked having her at his side most of all? [break][break]

Taking Nenet's hands in his, Zev gave them a reassuring squeeze. "I'm sorry." A fake apology, but perhaps she would not notice this time. Not while he leaned in and kissed her cheek. "I'm here. Let's shower."

Normally, Nenet's presence was a comfort to Zev, solace during stressful days and sleepless nights. But at that moment, with his consciousness reorienting itself to the microcosm and his brain still working overtime to compartmentalize his trauma, she was more aggravation than balm. [break][break]

"Not now," he snapped, bristling like an animal at her touch. Exasperation and fatigue colored his tone. "Arceus. What do you want from me, woman?" [break][break]

Another man might have heard his own words and realized at once he'd overstepped. Another man would have felt guilt or regret, then tried to make up for his rudeness. But Zev did not know how to feel those things.

As more minutes passed, more of the real, mundane world came back to Zev. He felt the unearthly weight of the universe release its grip on him, tendril by tendril. When Nenet called for him, he turned toward her right away, drawn by the sound of her voice. [break][break]

Her demeanor reminded him of a caged animal. Perhaps that shouldn't have surprised him, considering the ordeal they'd just experienced. The sound of spraying water hitting tiles immediately brought him back to the communal shower of that alien prison. [break][break]

But as with all traumas of his life, his mind seized it, wrangled it into submission, and locked it away in a dark corner. It would rot there, alongside the memories of bullies, of boot camp, and of hazing. [break][break]

"Go ahead. I'll shower after," Zev said to Nenet, remembering to blink. He moved to walk past her, intending to check that their belongings had not been stolen in their absence.
