Walsh is as insignificant as you are, Zev thought but knew better than to voice. Instead, he inclined his head in acknowledgement of Cillian's statement. The other man's attempt at humor suggested that Zev's answers were good enough, and the interrogation could come to an end.[break][break]

But not the suspicion. He knew better to assume that Cillian would stop regarding him with wariness and caution, especially considering the underboss' history with Necrozma.[break][break]

"We'll just have to see," Zev agreed. He stepped down from the bar stool, indicating his desire to leave. "Now, unless you have any other concerns you want to bring up, I'm heading out. I have a bar to close."

Zev sat back in his chair, his lunch mostly finished. "We can make an educated guess," he said matter-of-factly. "Necrozma destroyed it as part of the rampage the DRK Triad orchestrated."[break][break]

He had theorized as much in the report he'd submitted to Team Rocket's leadership after his return from Ultra Space.[break][break]

The Beast tilted his head at the mention of fern delaney's patron. "I thought that Tapu Koko came from Lesser Megalopolis. We haven't traveled to Ultra Megalopolis yet. But it's safe to assume that both suffered the same fate for the same reasons."[break][break]

However, mention of the deities similar to Tapu Koko prompted a new train of thought.[break][break]

"If Admin Delaney is interested in finding the other Tapus in Lesser Megalopolis, then I should go with him. I know the place best of all of us," Zev mused.

"Because I am a Rocket Beast," Zev said evenly, unaffected by Himiko's histrionics. "And it is my job to evaluate transfers, to better understand where you belong in our operations."[break][break]

His expression finally shifted from stoicism as he raised an eyebrow at her. "Unless I should just assign you to bathroom cleaning duty?"[break][break]

She relented, and his face settled back into a piercing apathy. As she rattled off her expertise, he sorted through his mental file of Rocket upper brass and their various direct reports. His mind went to howard slayte and Elisabeth Fiorelli. Perhaps even fern delaney.[break][break]

"A well-rounded skill set," Zev mused aloud, his tone revealing nothing about his thoughts. "Have you killed another person before? Perhaps with your poisons?"

A noise from the upper floor drew Zev's attention at once. He turned and headed straight up the stairs, moving as silently as he could, to avoid alerting the intruder of his approach.[break][break]

On the landing, he paused again in the space between rooms. The bathroom door was still open, so he ruled that one out right away. But the doors of both bedrooms were closed shut, and he could hear no other sounds to reveal the location of his prey.[break][break]

Wait.[break][break]

Blue eyes narrowed at the door on the right. Was it closed before?[break][break]

The crystal along Zev's right arm rippled, transforming into a long blade with a razor edge. He stepped toward the wall that separated the corridor from the bedroom, then thrust his arm forward. His blade cut straight through plaster, insulation, and the wood of a bed's headboard, but did not bite into any flesh.[break][break]

Not yet, anyway. But with luck, his attack spooked whatever was hiding inside. And if they escaped back into the hallway to try fleeing downstairs, he could seize them.

Standing in front of the large Tera crystal, Zev scanned the instructions written beneath it. "This prompt is pointless. I've never wanted to be a Gym Leader," he muttered.[break][break]

Yet the void of white around him and jayden cross transformed anyway. The brilliant emptiness gave way to an arena fashioned to look like an urban street. Zev immediately recognized the storefronts and buildings from his old neighborhood in Saffron City.[break][break]

Except it was pitch black, with all the lights snuffed out. Ruins lay strewn about the arena as obstacles for challengers. Occasionally, an enormous laser beam cut across the battlefield, illuminating the scene with terrible light.[break][break]

Zev shrugged, unsurprised. "This will do."[break][break]

Nomi's mention of the Cave of Origin jogged Zev's memory of the book she and Amor Rose had recovered after Chien-Pao's attack. The Beast nodded again, just once.[break][break]

"Then let us know when you've finished your experiments and are ready to run new simulations. We're curious to see if they will reveal any new information," he said.[break][break]

They must, he assumed. One would be a fool to introduce a new variable into any situation and expect nothing to change.[break][break]

Sensing that the conversation had reached its natural conclusion, Zev rose from his chair. Before leaving her office, he paused in the doorway and cast Nomi a backward glance.[break][break]

"We'll be in touch, Sato."

Thankfully, Madeline McKenna listened to Zev's suggestion and wandered back into the building without smoking the cigarette he'd given her. Alone again, he savored the rest of his smoke and whisky in blessed silence.[break][break]

Eventually, however, the Beast became restless again. Begrudgingly acknowledging that he couldn't leave the party yet, he flicked the butt of his cigarette off the edge of the balcony before rejoining the crowd.[break][break]

And somehow, the casino had grown even more crowded. Zev scanned faces both familiar and strange before settling on a pair catching up near the entrance.[break][break]

What had THEO BECKETT said? That Zev needed to be more sociable?[break][break]

Placing his empty glass of whisky down on a random high-top table, the Beast moved through the throng of guests like an unswerving mountain until he drew up alongside oscar clayton and priam conrad.[break][break]

"Oscar. Priam," he said, nodding his head in greeting first to one man, then the other. Zev's gaze lingered on the latter grunt's choice of clothing. "Nice sweater. Very festive."

The burning conflagration of ARMOR CANNON filled the street for a moment, illuminating the Marshadow as the attack struck true. The Ghost-type phased right through a Delibird Delivery sign as it was thrown backward.[break][break]

And then it surged forward again, darkness wreathing its tiny body as the flames of the Armarouge's attack dissipated on the night air. This time, Marshadow aimed POISON JAB at its foe, hoping to infect the Fire Warrior Pokémon with debilitating toxins.[break][break]

As the two fought across the street, a shadow moved behind Kazimir, one that bristled with void-black crystal from head to toe. Spiked tendrils emerged from his back as he neared the unsuspecting man.[break][break]

Though if Kazimir listened carefully, he would hear the sound of snow crunching underfoot with enough time to react.

Zev did not flinch or frown at Himiko's attitude. The missive received from her father had warned Team Rocket of her petulant childishness.[break][break]

And even if he hadn't, Zev had crossed paths with enough grunts who were the sheltered, privileged offspring of the crime syndicate's allies to know exactly what lurked beneath the bravado.[break][break]

"You wouldn't be the first scared kid running away from their problems," he said. "What matters is whether you can keep up with our organization's demands, because we'll crush you underfoot if you can't."[break][break]

He leveled a scrutinizing gaze at her.[break][break]

"I've read your file, but I want to hear what you have to say about yourself—your skills and strengths—in your own words," Zev said. "Consider this an entrance interview."

The house was small and empty, with only the barest furniture inside. A table with chairs. An old, weathered sofa with numerous rips in its fabric. The closets were narrow; several could fit a young woman by herself, but not her Gabite too.[break][break]

Though the upper floor only contained two cramped bedrooms and a shared bathroom, all three were large enough to fit both trainer and Pokémon.[break][break]

The door leading to the basement opened with a loud creak as Zev stepped through. He paused in the hallway, listening for any sign of movement elsewhere in the house. The soft whine of a floorboard, or the click of a door shutting.[break][break]

Alone, he had shed his human form. Pale skin had vanished beneath a brutal expanse of black crystal that consumed all light. His silhouette was like a void cut out of reality itself. Two eyes of cold, cruel blue gazed out from the darkness.[break][break]

After a moment of stillness, he began his hunt.

Zev suppressed the look of exasperation that threatened to emerge at the sound of Hitoshi's embarrassed hesitation. "Card games are not the same. We'll start with checkers," the Beast said.[break][break]

Perhaps, in time, they could build up to more complicated games.[break][break]

"Meet me in the submarine this Friday at 7 PM. We'll play in the break room and go over battle strategy at the same time."[break][break]

Hitoshi's case was interesting, Zev mused. Physically, he was in peak condition; in fact, Zev had no doubt that sparring Hitoshi in the fitness center would only confirm his suspicions. Therefore, unlike other grunts, what needed honing was not his physical ability but his mental capacity.[break][break]

If that could improve and expand, Hitoshi would be formidable indeed.

In his head, Zev was already crafting a version of himself that Team Rocket could get to know. It would be different from his true self in subtle ways, made easier by the fact that no one in the organization actually knew much about him.[break][break]

"I like Bee well enough," he conceded with a tilt of his head. "I imagine the idea of teaching me how to be social would amuse him greatly, too."[break][break]

Zev's gaze flickered to the full glass sitting near Theo that the underboss still had not touched.[break][break]

"Is there anything you would like to know, Beckett?" the Beast asked, growing even more amused at the thought of practicing on the other man. "About me, or about Necrozma."

The explosion of fire that resulted from the Charmander's FLAME BURST striking the TOXIC GAS was enough to halt the Hypno's assault. Both Pokémon received terrible burns; screaming with pain and frustration, they teleported away, disappearing from sight in the blink of an eye.[break][break]

Zev had coated himself with black crystal as soon as he saw the conflagration about to happen. Though some of his clothing caught fire, he had summoned a large, flat shield to protect his head—whatever his armor did not normally cover.[break][break]

Meanwhile, his Hatterene had teleported to a safe distance, returning only when the explosion was over. She patted the bits of her master that was still ablaze with her clawed tentacle, putting out the small flames.[break][break]

"What the fuck was that?" Zev snapped, his crystals retreating enough to reveal his face. He glowered at Sidney, even as he moved through the building with her to locate their missing cargo.[break][break]

And sure enough, the Pokémon they were meant to smuggle were tucked safely away in a corner, fast asleep thanks to earlier HYPNOSIS.[break][break]

"At least these are undamaged," the Beast said with a sigh. "Let's get them ready for shipment."
