The unsteady DRAGON PULSE careened wildly off course, missing Gengar by a wide margin. Cackling, the ghost retaliated with HEX, his own vision unimpaired by the darkness. [break][break]

Despite the razor edge on Zev's crystals, they could not pierce through stone as easily as other, weaker materials. But Noel, hiding behind the memorial, was not safe from danger. Not when Zev could manipulate the curves of space-time itself. [break][break]

With a simple shift of his perception, the world around him lit up with a sixth sense. Threads of gravity connected the planet to everything: the ground, the sea, the Pokémon, even him and Noel. [break][break]

Zev isolated the ones attached to the stone structure, grasped them with his mind, and pulled. [break][break]

With a violent crack, the shrine toppled over, threatening to smash into Noel as it crashed to the ground. [break][break]

zev can manipulate the gravitational field in his immediate vicinity, allowing him to change the planet’s gravitational pull on everything within range, including himself. [break][break]

he can ascend to high places (but not fly), control any falls to the ground, and make himself immovable when grounded. he can also cause other objects, people, and pokémon to rise into the air or force them to the ground.

Zev cared less about Alba's personal reasoning and more about the answer he chose to give. People with certain convictions tended to have stronger desires to challenge themselves and change. Others, who did things "just because," never made significant progress before giving up.[break][break]

At that moment, Alba struck him as the latter.[break][break]

"We hold regular training sessions for grunts in the submarine. You can always sign up for those," the Beast said, giving his armored hand an experimental flex. "There was no need to meet with me first—unless, of course, there's something you want from me specifically."[break][break]

He raised his eyebrow at the younger man to emphasize the unspoken question. But his attention was diverted back to his crystals by Alba's questions.[break][break]

"It feels right to get them back, but neither does it feel wrong to know there are others out there," Zev said at length.[break][break]

After all, Necrozma could create copies of itself with its crystals, for the purpose of scouting other worlds and gathering information. And though Zev was still partly flesh and blood, he housed enough crystals inside his body to be considered an extension of the god.

"Okay, but not here," Zev said as he stood up from the couch. "It's too big for the apartment, and won't get along with the dogs."[break][break]

After bundling up in coats and scarves, he led Nenet up the stairs to the apartment building's roof. Unbeknownst to them, it had started snowing while they were inside. A fresh, thin layer coated everything in sight while soft, fluffy flakes continued falling around them.[break][break]

With the twinkling stars above and the glittering city lights below, the wintry beauty of their surroundings seemed almost magical.[break][break]

Opening a Pokéball, Zev released his Type: Null. The creature snorted at the frigid temperature and stamped its claws upon the snow, suspicious. Then it spied Nenet and froze. Beady eyes flickered between this woman it had never seen before and its master, as if to ask the question, Friend or foe?[break][break]

The man gestured to his wife. "This is Nenet," he said to the Pokémon. "She's an ally. She won't harm you."[break][break]

Still, if Nenet chose to approach the man-made creature, he would remain close to defend her in case Type: Null decided to attack.

Zev listened with a neutral expression, even as Himiko's volume increased to the point of screaming. He waited until she'd collected herself and finished her story before responding in the same level, even voice he'd been using for their conversation.[break][break]

"Until then, you'll have to complete jobs and tasks deemed appropriate for your skills and expertise. If you do well, you might climb the ranks here and gain more responsibility," he said, without any sympathy for her plight.[break][break]

"And whether you think this is a backwater region or not, a lot of eyes are on Hoenn right now, including the Boss' in Kanto. Do well here, and you may be welcomed back home with open arms."[break][break]

He removed a folded piece of paper from his coat pocket and placed it on the table between them.[break][break]

"This is the address to our headquarters. Go there to finish your processing. You might even be assigned your first job right away," he instructed her. "Before we leave, though, do you have any questions for me?"

Before Zev could grab the girl, her Gabite forced her behind its back. With a fluid movement, the Dragon-type swiped at Zev's arm with DRAGON CLAW, knocking it off course. Then it snapped its head forward to bite down on the crystalline wrist.[break][break]

The Pokémon's teeth shattered. Blood sprayed from its mouth onto Zev and the floor between them. A thunderous roar filled the house, shaking the walls and window, as the Gabite reared back in agony.[break][break]

Zev stepped back, cautious. An animal in pain could deal considerable damage. While he wasn't worried about himself, Team Rocket needed the safehouse intact.[break][break]

His pause was just enough of an opening, should Gwendolyn choose that moment to run.

Zev raised an eyebrow at Bryan, not quite believing what he was hearing. He had not known Bryan before the man became The Lifebringer; it was hard to imagine such a brutish, close-combat fighter engaging the enemy from a distance.[break][break]

Then again, Zev had not used firearms in a while. When he could crush his enemies with a single thought, firearms seemed superfluous.[break][break]

"So your Avatarship changed you," he observed. "What stops you from going back to that style of fighting? From being more methodical?" [break][break]

He paused. [break][break]

"Or are you saying Avatarship changed you so much that you can't go back to being the person you were before?" [break][break]

The train of thought prompted Zev to wonder, too, what happened to Avatars when Legendary Pokémon rescinded that bond. He had a hunch that the process didn't stop at the removal of their powers.[break][break]

A familiar revulsion flooded him, one that reminded him of the sundering of the soul. He took another drag of his cigarette to fend off such existential horror.

The flash of light that accompanied the Hisuian Goodra's release from its Pokéball was enough to reveal the horror of the scene, if only for a brief moment. Zev advanced, a man-shaped monstrosity of brutal crystal, tendrils lashing out like hungry serpents.[break][break]

And in that moment of illumination, his Gengar emerged from the shadow beneath him. The Ghost-type lunged, aiming a BRICK BREAK at the Goodra.[break][break]

Then all was dark once more, but that did not deter Zev. Though he could not see any better than Noel in that gray twilight, the shape of the younger man was still discernible. While his Gengar took care of Noel's Pokémon, Zev pursued the trainer.[break][break]

If Noel continued to dodge, he had a few options: head toward the cliff with its long, long drop into the sea, attempt to rush past Zev to the walking trail leading back to Dewford, or use the stone memorial as cover.

Zev spent enough years of his life studying other people to recognize the guarded nature of Nenet's expression and posture. Uninterested in pushing her away, he handed back the documents.[break][break]

"Team Rocket's science department has been researching the Type Full formula gathered during expeditions into the Ultra Wilds," he explained. Sitting back, he draped an arm across the back of the couch behind her shoulders. "They've successfully made a few Type: Null already. I have one."[break][break]

A smile slowly spread across his face as he considered the intensity in his wife's eyes. The thirst for knowledge. He knew no other reason for her to be so absorbed in a side project, to the point that she'd forgotten their date.[break][break]

When Zev received the email from Lulu Flint, he expected it had something to do with his request about the sun-like symbol. Instead, she wrote about a Minior in her possession that was glitching out in a way that reminded her of the DRK Triad.[break][break]

Also, strangely, the email was riddled with spelling errors, which was completely at odds with the intelligent, thorough, and professional person Lulu seemed to be.[break][break]

Still, interest piqued by her words, Zev made his way into the Rocket submarine to meet with the scientist. He let himself into the laboratory and, rounding the corner, caught sight of Lulu.[break][break]

"Flint," he said, to get her attention. Then his eyes fell upon the moss-covered Minior. Its glitching gave him pause, more out of curiosity than caution. "So this is the Pokémon. What happened to it?"
