He flashed a grin before turning back to his snack. The two men and their Pokémon wove through the crowds, taking in the sights, smells, and sounds. A WOBBUFFET waddled up bearing a tray of dumpling samples.[break][break]

Zev slowed his pace in case Jack wanted to try some and take more photos. "They did, which was pretty nice of them. Did they find out anything more about that gem?"

Even before Zev opened his eyes, the familiar aroma of freshly brewed coffee roused him awake. A glance over his shoulder confirmed that Neffatari Nzingha was not in bed with him; the comforter on her side lay disturbed, her warmth long evaporated from the sheets.[break][break]

With no reason to stay under the covers, Zev got out of bed. He pulled on last night's shirt and a pair of gym shorts before leaving the bedroom. One flight of stairs and one short hallway later, he found Nenet in the kitchen, dressed in the silk robe he'd gotten her for their wedding anniversary.[break][break]

She looked up from the pancakes on the stove and gave him a soft smile. "You're finally awake. Coffee's in the pot," she said in her signature low tone.[break][break]

He drew up behind her and kissed her shoulder where the robe had slipped off. "Thank you."[break][break]

After adjusting Nenet's robe back onto her shoulder, Zev walked away to pour himself a mug of the delicious, black brew. Cradling it in his hands, he started for the front porch, attached to the breakfast nook where they normally ate together.[break][break]

"Let me know when the pancakes are ready."[break][break]

With a soft click, the door opened. His Lycanroc, who'd been sunning herself in the morning light, raised her head at his arrival.[break][break]

Ignoring her, Zev leaned against the wooden banister and took a first sip. The drink's bitterness washed over his tongue and the heat filled him, prompting him to close his eyes in obvious pleasure.[break][break]

An errant breeze ruffled his hair. Opening his eyes, he took in the sight before him, his lips curling into a satisfied smile.[break][break]

Beneath a yawning WORMHOLE in the sky, Sootopolis came to life with the dawn of a new day.

Zev offered his arm for Nenet to take as they descended the stairs in front of her apartment building in Mossdeep. A couple of weeks had passed since her fateful encounter with an unknown Rocket assailant, and her body was healing well.[break][break]

Still, Zev was careful about her recovery, making sure he was there whenever she needed him.[break][break]

Ahead of them, their pack of dogs barked with excitement, tails wagging. Nenet had dressed them in an assortment of costumes—mostly bats, but the Yamper wore a MUMMY costume since the other didn't fit.[break][break]

They were going trick-or-treating, something Zev hadn't done since he was a child in Lavender Town. And even then, he hated it, forced to participate in the stupid ritual by his parents.[break][break]

But this time was different. This time, he was indulging his wife.[break][break]

"Is there any particular direction you want to go?" he asked her. An assortment of Halloween decorations lit up the neighborhood, and groups of costumed trick-or-treaters filled the night with the noise of their revelry.

As night descended upon Slateport, half of the city began their rituals to wind down for the day. The other half, however, stirred awake. Neon lights blinked OPEN and the shutters on food stalls drew open. Strolling down the main boulevard of the lower district, Zev watched as the night market came to life.[break][break]

With his apartment mere blocks away, he was no stranger to the hustle and bustle of the market. Yet he enjoyed the culinary experience every time, even if he disdained the tourism it attracted and the souvenir booths peddling cheap knicknacks.[break][break]

But there was no better place to practice his civilian persona, especially when he was in the midst of the crowd with a "friend."[break][break]

"Is this your first time visiting the night market, Jack?" Zev asked the other man in between bites of a SLOWPOKE TAIL. His Espeon, a frequent companion of his while in public, strode alongside him.

"Arceus, maybe?" Zev offered in response to Lulu's spoken wonder. It was the original Pokémon, after all, if the myths were to be believed. The Creator.[break][break]

But neither Father Winter nor the stealthy Unown provided any answers. Instead, the scenario shifted once more. Zev stared at the two dragons, familiar with them now thanks to how many times the simulation machine had shown them to him.[break][break]

"Maybe not," Zev admitted, stepping over injured League agents as they moaned and cried on the ground. "But there should be a radio. We can check the different comms channels and see if we can get information from them."[break][break]

His Seviper sank her fangs into a screaming Ranger, delivering a deadly dose of poison. Zev ignored the man's dying wails as he surveyed a workstation. Several half-empty cans of energy drinks and RAGE CANDY BAR wrappers littered its surface.[break][break]

In its center, however, a map spread across it, the beginnings of different triangulations marked with red pencil.[break][break]

Not all of the island had been charted yet—indeed, the northern face where Team Rocket's own forces gathered was still blank. But several League stations and routes were already scored in graphite.[break][break]

"We can use this, too," Zev said to Elisabeth without looking at her.

With Tropius' return to the battle, Type: Null attacked the Metagross again with heightened vigor. Roaring, dodged the HYPER BEAM aimed at it and swiped at its opponent with SHADOW CLAW. The Metagross screamed its low, metallic cry before collapsing onto the ground.[break][break]

The League agents exchanged nervous glances, then reached for their belts to summon more Pokémon. At least they seemed more interested in retreating than attacking; Zev's vicious attack on one of their members had sown chaos among them.[break][break]

Seeing this, Zev rushed over to the boulder where Xiura hid. "We don't have time to fight," he told her. "Do you have anything that can incapacitate all of them at once? HYPNOSIS or SLEEP POWDER?"[break][break]

If she did not, then he wagered he could decimate them all if he MEGA EVOLVED one of his own Pokémon.

Cradling Nenet as if she were a fragile possession, Zev trudged down the rocky slope toward the beach, where he knew Team Rocket's medical department had set up an aid station. He said nothing as he arrived at the camp; his dark glower spoke volumes, sending grunts scattering before him.[break][break]

The medics directed Zev to put Nenet on a stool, where they fussed over her wounds. He stood by her side the entire time, growling out commands and questions. No one dared ask who she was.[break][break]

Eventually, the medics finished. They gave Nenet painkillers and instructions on how—and for how long—to rest. Zev listened carefully. He intended to ensure that she followed their instructions to the letter, knowing she might return to work too early out of stubbornness or impatience.[break][break]

When all was said and done, he finally brought her home, the whisper of teleportation delivering them to his doorstep in Slateport City.

Nenet's blood stained Zev's skin, masking the wetness of her tears, but the way her shoulders betrayed her emotional state. His grip on her tightened as the rage in his veins reached a boiling point.[break][break]

Then, prompted by the accumulation of negative emotions gathered in that spot, Zev's Hatterene appeared at his side. Reaching up, she placed a gentle claw on Nenet's cheek. A HEAL PULSE passed between the two, easing Nenet's pain and prompting the blood on her more superficial wounds to clot. The swelling of her ankle began to lessen.[break][break]

It wasn't enough—it wouldn't set her arm or heal her broken bones—but it was a start.[break][break]

The interruption drew Zev from the narrow path of future violence. He glanced down at his Hatterene, offering her a slight nod of approval. "Get us out of here," he said, his voice still thick with unbridled emotion. "My wife wants to go home."[break][break]

Hatterene nodded. She teleported a few feet away to face the interdream mist and blasted it apart with SPRINGTIDE STORM. The winds of the attack dispersed the fog at once, destroying the hallucination of Necrozma's wrath upon Lesser Megalopolis.[break][break]

The bright sun shone upon a rocky landscape. The smell of salt water filled Zev's nose, and the breeze that ruffled his hair was warm with the Hoenn's mild autumn weather.

The sky shattered.[break][break]

A furious wind howled as an enormous wormhole opened above the strange, prism-filled city. Two monstrous, crystalline claws reached through, followed by the black, angular body of Necrozma as it descended. Its eyes flashed white.[break][break]

All the surrounding light streaked toward it, as if the creature had taken a deep breath and sucked it all in.[break][break]

Zev did not seem to notice. Against the sudden, claustrophobic darkness, his eyes shone bright and deadly. He slowly rose to his feet in front of Nenet, the image of her broken body seared into his mind even if he could not see her at that moment.[break][break]

The face of every Rocket operative on the island that he knew flashed through his mind. Each one with the strength and motivation to harm a woman in this way.[break][break]

Cillian Quinn. His husband Tempest Quinn. THEO BECKETT. Fellow Beasts mint frost and bryan delarosa. BARNABY FINCH. Even a grunt like Kouji Matsubara or a scientist like Amor Rose.[break][break]

Without warning, a prismatic laser beam sheared through the nearest skyscraper, illuminating their surroundings with dreadful light. Metal shrieked and stone crumbled. Necrozma roared and fired again. People in the distance screamed.[break][break]

Bending over, Zev gently picked up Nenet to cradle her, princess-style, against his chest.[break][break]

The hole in the sky stretched wider, as black as the void. The stars around it began to smudge and stretch, pulled into it like water down a drain. Another laser cut the street in half, sending concrete flying into the air.[break][break]

But nothing touched them even as rubble rained down around them, as if they were standing witness to a memory of long ago.[break][break]

Zev pressed his lips against the top of Nenet's head. "I will never let this happen to you again," he swore to her. "I promise."

Zev eased his grip on Nenet at the mention of the broken arm. Up close, he observed how she held one of them stiffly, and also how she favored one leg over another. "Sit," he said, helping her to a nearby rock.[break][break]

Once she was seated, he knelt in front of her, checking her legs and ankles. He found the injured one in short order, the swelling indicative of something painful.[break][break]

Every new revelation of Nenet's physical state sent a spike of white-hot rage through Zev. When he looked back up at her, gone was the cold aloofness that normally graced his expression. In its place was a burning fury. Each line and angle of his face was taut with the promise of violence.[break][break]

Around them, the fog and the island and everything on it had abruptly vanished. In fact, they were not on Hoenn any longer. The alien, futuristic, prism-like skyscrapers around them glowed with a sickly light, almost preternatural.[break][break]

Nenet would not recognize this place, this half-imagined Lesser Megalopolis that used to be, which Zev had come to envisage in his explorations.[break][break]

"Who did this?" Zev repeated, his voice a low and terrible rumble. His searing blue gaze remained fixed on Nenet's, as if he hadn't noticed the change in their surroundings. "Someone in Team Rocket?"
