Zev's eyes slid to Anahel's shoulder wound and to the blood dripping down her arm. He dismissed his crystals with a mere thought; they disappeared back into his flesh, leaving no blemish or mark upon his skin.[break][break]

"There's a first aid kit in the kitchen. Look under the sink," he said, choosing not to answer her question right away as he pointed with his now normal-looking hand.[break][break]

While giving Anahel time to disinfect and bandage her wound, the Beast brought the stolen Pokéball belts downstairs, his Starmie following with the Loudred and Wartortle in psychic tow.[break][break]

When he returned to the first floor, he pulled out his phone to text the cleaning crew.[break][break]

Finally, he spoke again. "How much have you learned about Avatars since you've joined?" he asked Anahel.

After removing his mask and putting it away, he began collecting the officers' Pokéballs while his Starmie used its psychic abilities to brainwash the captured Loudred and Wartortle, who was strung up in Ariados' ELECTROWEB.[break][break]

The Beast glanced up at the girl's question. "Yeah," he said. "You must not have heard it yet." Because if there was one constant, it was the rumor mill among the ranks of grunts.[break][break]

Zev straightened and raised one hand. The skin on the back of it rippled like a receding tide as a layer of dark crystal emerged to cover it. No light reflected off the black, faceted surface.[break][break]

"I can't be killed."

Gunfire again, twice. In the cramped space of the back rooms of that house, bullets were too close for comfort. Zev unconsciously summoned his armor, the crystals emerging from his flesh to cover his skin up to his jaw. Beneath his clothing and the half-mask covering his face, they were not visible.[break][break]

Nor did they impede him. He lunged forward, pursuing the second officer into the kitchen. The other man fired; the bullet smashed into Zev's chest, causing him to stumble for a second.[break][break]

But only a second.[break][break]

Zev surged forward, uninjured. The cop's shock was his demise. Zev's knife sank into his chest between his ribs, puncturing his heart. He'd be alive for only a few minutes as he bled out and his organs failed.[break][break]

The opposing Pokémon were less easy to subdue. Ariados tangled with the Loudred while Zev's Starmie came down from the second floor behind Anahel's Surskit.[break][break]

A combination of SPIDER WEB from the Bug-type and CONFUSE RAY from the starfish eventually subdued the Big Voice Pokémon without killing it.[break][break]

The skirmish ended as quickly as it had begun. Zev wiped his blade on the cop's uniform and dismissed his armor with a thought. Then he turned to Anahel.[break][break]

"These Pokémon don't need to be killed," he said, gesturing to the officers' partners first, then to the other Pokéballs on their belts. "We can wipe their memories with one of our Psychic-types and add them to the smuggling stock."[break][break]

He paused, regarding the girl with a cold, critical stare.[break][break]

"Where did you learn to shoot a gun?" Her dossier had not suggested a background familiar with firearms.

Zev's entire body jarred with the impact of his strike against the REFLECT cast around Kyle by his Entei. He barely had time to recover when the SURF from the Top Champion's Suicune smashed into him, sending him tumbling across the ruined ground.[break][break]

Soaked to the bone, Zev staggered to his feet. His stomach churned as if infected with GASTRO ACID as the corpse of the Metagross reanimated. Despite the Rocket Beast's natural cruelty, an animal instinct told him how wrong it was to see the dead come back to life.[break][break]

In an instant, he realized the true extent of Kyle's abilities. The Top Champion could force anything—anyone—to continue fighting against their will, even after death. Zev could not help the flicker of admiration as he watched the Metagross bear down upon his Hatterene.[break][break]

Perhaps Kyle was more like him than they both thought.[break][break]

Still, with one Pokémon against Kyle's four, Zev knew he had to retreat and reconsider his strategy against the other man. He had to leave immediately, especially with the YAWN targeted at him.[break][break]

Zev recalled his Hatterene and released his Gengar in one quick swap. "Get us out of here," he snapped to the ghost. Instantly, they vanished with PHANTOM FORCE.

The back door crashed open. A gun fired, only for the bullet to shatter against a flash of light.[break][break]

Two Pokémon had burst into the house with the police, a Wartortle and a Loudred. The former had set up PROTECT as a shield around its trainer, saving his life. The Loudred acted next, lashing out at Anahel's Kirlia with ASTONISH.[break][break]

Zev moved, slipping from the shadows with speed, his knife raised. The officer that remained standing turned just in time to dodge a slash at his neck. The shoulder of his uniform tore instead.[break][break]

He stumbled backward into an adjacent room, fumbling for his own firearm. "Rockets!" he shouted the obvious.[break][break]

Meanwhile, Zev's Ariados descended from her perch to snare the Wartortle in ELECTROWEB. A wave of electricity surged through the Pokémon, ripping a scream from his lungs.

And judging by the way the noise was only getting louder, they were not far from the center of the clearing.[break][break]

"I need two of you to come with me," Zev barked out at the nearest Rockets, the modulator in his full-face mask transforming his voice into a guttural snarl. "The rest of you, focus on those doors!"[break][break]

His Annihilape surged ahead to engage the first of their opponents in CLOSE COMBAT (120 BP).

Unlike previous experiments, when Zev had siphoned in light from both natural and manmade sources, the light of the vigilante's Z-move did not totally disappear. It dimmed, the power of attack dampened.[break][break]

And the light Zev did absorb was less than he expected—the mere flicker of a flame compared to a surge of cosmic heat.[break][break]

More curiously, the energy felt familiar. It swept through him like an OMINOUS WIND, brushing against something deep within him with a hint of power. Startled, Zev took a step backward.[break][break]

Marshadow swooped into the space between the men. The GIGA DRAIN that smacked its small body did not deter it; instead, it barreled toward its foe, drawing its fist back.[break][break]

As soon as it was close enough, it unleashed an ICE PUNCH on the Roserade.

The word settled unpleasantly in Zev's stomach like GASTRO ACID. He hated the constant reminders of the collective delusion others seemed to accept as reality. As truth.[break][break]

Yet even he could not deny what unfolded before his eyes. Extensive research had confirmed what Bee said aloud: that Interdream Mist drew on people's subconscious. Zev and Bee's older forms had to have come from somewhere.[break][break]

And if not from the collective delusion, then what?[break][break]

A HURRICANE kicked up as the Galarian Articuno struck back against Necrozma. Though they had manifested from the surrounding fog, they were as flesh and blood as the two Rockets. Ferocious winds clawed at Zev's clothing and mask.[break][break]

"We need to keep moving," he told Bee, raising his voice over the howling storm.[break][break]

Though Zev's expression did not change from an aloof, icy stare, he gave a slight nod of approval at Anahel's choice of Pokémon. "Get them into position. There's always the chance there won't be a raid tonight, but stay out of sight anyway."[break][break]

Zev sent his Starmie up to the second floor and his Ariados into the shadows of the first floor to lie in wait, like some insectoid VAMPIRE.[break][break]

They did not have to wait long for the police to arrive. Almost as soon as the Pokémon had gone to obey their masters' commands, the commonplace sound of a car pulling up in front of the house filled the heavy air.[break][break]

An engine turned off. Doors opened and shut.[break][break]

Putting on a half-mask to cover the lower part of his face, Zev tucked himself into an ambush spot he'd picked out earlier. From there, he watched flashlights shine through the slits of the boarded up windows.[break][break]

Slowly, silently, he drew his knife.

Zev walked from room to room through the darkened hideout, checking the defensibility of each one. His eyes immediately searched for exits, hiding places, and ambush spots—good locations to put his Pokémon. He'd brought a full belt of six on that night, plus the pistol in its concealed holster and the combat knife sheathed at his hip.[break][break]

He was there to put an end to the string of raids on Team Rocket's smuggling safehouses by League authorities. The Lilycove Police Department had gotten bold. They had recently hit a hideout with caged Pawmi and PAWMO; Paldean Pokémon were still wildly popular, and Team Rocket had been raking in considerable earnings from their sale.[break][break]

While the rescue of those Pokémon had not made a huge dent in the crime syndicate's income, it had been the last straw. And so Zev was sent to defend against the next raid—and hopefully stop them for good.[break][break]

But he wasn't alone. A new grunt was assigned to assist him in the hope she would learn a lot from the experience. He'd read her file on the way to Lilycove, but nothing about her background stood out. She was young and angry with the League—the same as many other recruits.[break][break]

"There are two main entrances: the front and back doors," Zev said to her as they reconvened in the main hall of the hideout, an abandoned house in one of the city's poorest neighborhoods.[break][break]

He released his Ariados and Starmie, small enough Pokémon that would not cause too much damage to the hideout in the event of a battle.[break][break]

"Cops usually don't go through boarded up windows, but we should have Pokémon out on each floor, just in case. What do you have?"
