Himiko leaned forward with a new, sudden eagerness that might have been surprising or suspicious, if he hadn't seen grunts do similar time and time again. Excited to prove themselves as a cut above the rest, they tried appealing to those ranked higher than them. [break][break]

"My business is killing people." [break][break]

If they were anywhere but Sootopolis, he might not have told her so bluntly. But anyone within earshot paid him no mind. The locals knew better than to report Team Rocket's assassins to the authorities. [break][break]

"If you want to help, then I can always use someone who can gather intelligence for me while blending in with regular society. So you will need a civilian persona. This isn't like Kanto where people are open about supporting our organization." [break][break]

Despite how many expeditions Zev had taken into Lesser Megalopolis, so much of the ruined city remained unexplored. He walked down unfamiliar streets on his way to meet THEO BECKETT, his senses on high alert for any crazed Megalopolan or hostile Ultra Beast. [break][break]

Finally, he reached the rendezvous point where the underboss waited. In the distance, Lesser Megalo Tower lanced toward the sky. Its top flashed with a sudden light, then died into darkness once more. [break][break]

A faint, muffled scream from elsewhere in the city cut through the ominous silence. [break][break]

"Beckett," Zev said when he saw the other man. "What an appropriate choice of location for a field demonstration."

The reckless girl took advantage of the opening, grabbing her Gabite and dashing for the stairs. Zev swiped at them with snake-like tendrils that burst from his body; their razor-sharp ends left gouges where they sliced the wooden handrail and dirt-stained wall.[break][break]

But the tumble down the stairs saved Gwendolyn's life. Having dodged the attack, she fled through the front entrance with her Pokémon. The door slammed against the side of the house with a sharp crack.[break][break]

Zev slowly descended the stairs to stand in the open doorway. He watched her retreating form, satisfied with his defense of the safehouse. She had neither found the smuggled Pokémon in the basement nor seen his human face.[break][break]

Instead, a different sort of rumor would begin to spread: that of a monster made of crystal that stalked through Hoenn at night.

Zev nodded slowly. Harvey's admission matched the sparse information Team Rocket had on file for him. Most new recruits were similar blank slates, but that inexperience was often the result of their youth. Runaways, high school dropouts, or college students without prospects made up a large bulk of faceless, nameless grunts.[break][break]

But Harvey was in the middle of his life—not old, but no longer young enough to blame age for a dearth of skills. Not that he was unique; plenty of adults coasted through life without applying themselves beyond basic, daily survival.[break][break]

Something must have happened, then, to prompt a midlife crisis.[break][break]

But Zev didn't particularly care, so all he asked was, "Then is there anything that interests you to try?"[break][break]

There was no question that Team Rocket would assign Harvey to a variety of different, easy jobs to figure out his competencies. But personal interests could sway those assignments in the grunt's favor at times.

Sunlight drove away the night's natural darkness as the Armarouge's SUNNY DAY burst to life overhead. Instinctively, Zev raised a hand to shield his eyes from the sudden, blinding brightness. In doing this, his grip on Kazimir's leg loosened; the other man could yank himself free, if he wished. [break][break]

At once, Zev knew he had lost the advantage. While light was not his weakness, it leveled the playing field for Kazimir and his Pokémon. [break][break]

And so he reached for the vast void of space between the stars. [break][break]

zev can summon unnatural darkness to cover an area within a limited radius. only he and his pokémon can see through the darkness; anyone else within it is blind.[break][break]

any lights within the area go out and can't be turned back on while the darkness is active, and outside lights cannot penetrate it. anyone observing from outside the area will see it as a dome-shaped, starless void.

A dome of impenetrable darkness sprang up around them, taller than the buildings in Lavaridge. It engulfed every street and storefront, man and Pokémon, that stood within its boundary. It swallowed the SUNNY DAY whole and plunged the battlefield into pitch blackness. [break][break]

Zev's vision shifted in an instant. His surroundings stood out in clear detail—especially the reactions of Kazimir and his Armarouge. Before they could get their bearings, he leapt into action. [break][break]

Several crystalline spikes lanced forward, piercing Kazimir's flesh and spilling blood.

"I'll pass," Zev said to priam conrad at the grunt's offer to pick out a sweater for him. [break][break]

At that moment, casino staff started doling out white elephant gifts to everyone in attendance. Zev watched with mild amusement as oscar clayton received the whisky bottle that he had brought. Meanwhile, he himself received a wrapped package and Priam was handed a sealed envelope. [break][break]

Zev brought the package over to the table where Oscar poured whisky into three bourbon glasses, above which hovered a Porygon carrying a drone camera. The Rocket Beast glowered at it for a moment, then resumed ignoring it. [break][break]

He raised his glass in a silent toast and sipped the smooth, strong alcohol, then turned to his present. One quick unwrapping later, and he gazed upon a trio of scented candles and two tickets to a show put on by a group called The Phantom Troupe. [break][break]

"Well, I know my wife will like these," Zev mused aloud, eyeing the candles. Picking up the tickets, he frowned at the information printed on one side. [break][break]

Turning to Priam and Oscar, he showed them the tickets. "Do either of you know anything about 'The Phantom Troupe'?"

"Yes," Zev said without hesitation. "Very. And it doesn't trust easily. I don't think it even trusts me." [break][break]

Type: Null did not move toward Nenet's outstretched hand, as if to emphasize this observation. Instead, it lowered its head and sniffed at the snow, great puffs of its breath condensing upon the air. [break][break]

"It's never seen snow before," Zev explained casually, unfazed by his Pokémon's standoffish nature. "And yes and no. One of our Head Scientists assisted me." [break][break]

He considered sharing Naomi Sato's name, especially since the two women had met before. But a person's affiliation with Team Rocket was secret knowledge. Revealing it to an outsider was as good as treason. [break][break]

Unless… [break][break]

"You want to make your own, don't you?" Zev asked Nenet, struck by a moment of clarity. His lips curled in a smile both amused and proud. "That's not exactly League-sanctioned research, is it?"

"The Tree of Life. I've heard of it," Zev said, nodding. When he'd read the reports, they were completely nonsensical to him. Initially, he'd chalked them up to hallucinations. But having lived through enough strange phenomenon in Hoenn, he accepted that there was truth in them. [break][break]

When Lulu prompted him for his thoughts and feelings, he focused on the Minior again. "It's definitely strange, but besides that, nothing stands out to me right away." [break][break]

As he reached out toward the Pokémon, he summoned his crystals to cover his hand up to the wrist. Void-black claws prodded the Minior. At the same time, he tapped into the open connection between him and Necrozma and waited. [break][break]

Nothing happened. [break][break]

Zev shook his head at Lulu. "We don't recognize it."

"If by 'the obvious', you mean an abundance of caution, then that was the main reason," Zev said, heaving a sigh. "There are many in our ranks who fear the repercussions of allying with Necrozma. Those who are familiar with what happened to Chu-e Choi, for example." [break][break]

A lie, of course. He'd intended to put off revealing the information for as long as possible. However, once he and Theo conducted the field demonstration, Zev was certain the underboss would disseminate the details to the rest of the upper brass. And why wouldn't he? [break][break]

"The other reason is that I'm not certain how to describe exactly what I can do. I haven't even had time to sufficiently test the boundaries of my powers." [break][break]

Ironically, the lack of knowledge was a truthful admission, even as he shared it as part of his new, more sociable persona. People were more likely to trust others who showed vulnerability, after all.
