Once again, Harvey provided a vague answer that implied he had no specific interests. Zev glanced sidelong at the other man for a contemplative moment before returning his gaze to the road ahead of them. [break][break]

"There's a lot that goes into smuggling, so even if you stick to this, you'll learn a lot. Encounter a lot, too," the Beast replied, remembering all the times he'd clashed with law enforcement during what had initially seemed like a simple delivery. [break][break]

"Team Rocket could always use people who can blend into regular society and gather intel. Befriend people in the League government or Rangers, learn what they know, and then report it back to us." [break][break]

The scenery around them changed as they exited the highway: urban concrete and metal transformed into natural treelines as the road wound its way toward Mauville. [break][break]

"It'd be wise to learn how to fight, too—both with Pokémon and without. Do you know how to battle Pokémon, at least?" Zev asked.

There was no doubt in his mind. bryan delarosa had driven the black shards out of Chu-e Choi's body, and they, on their own accord, had swarmed Zev next. At the time, he had wondered if the crystals possessed a hivemind of some kind. He knew better now, of course. [break][break]

It was all Necrozma. Every single shard of metal, every copy of itself that it created—they were simply vessels of its will. They and the original were one and the same. [break][break]

Zev shook his head as he, too, began following the shiny Tapu Koko. "My explorations have focused on Lesser Megalo Tower, and the only creatures I encountered there were Ultra Beasts and mindless Megalopolans. And the shard of Necrozma, of course." [break][break]

The distant tower loomed over the entire city, its top occasionally blinking with rare light. [break][break]

To him, the chance of encountering a Legendary Pokémon in that wasteland seemed about as slim as encountering Kyurem at the Silent Icelands. Yet both he and Fern had experienced otherwise. [break][break]

Zev wondered if there was a deeper secret of Lesser Megalopolis they still hadn't uncovered—something that attracted such powerful Pokémon to the place. [break][break]

"Have you gotten used to all your powers by now?" he asked Fern, remembering the ELECTRIC TERRAIN that had briefly paralyzed all Team Rocket's upper brass during the skirmish at the Cave of Origin. [break][break]

Fern had been a fool to fight against them then, but Zev understood the natural inclination to protect one's possessions.

A few months passed before Zev and Nenet returned to the abandoned cottage in Ultra Crater. They had finally collected all five items indicated on the bamboo that filled the strange, shrine-like grotto: a small stoneware bowl, Nenet's Typhlosion, Zev's Blastoise, a Dragon-type Tera shard, and a small brooch depicting a branch with emerald leaves. [break][break]

Zev took it upon himself to reinforce the cottage as a base of operations. The ruined shell of the building was a poor shelter. He covered the hole in the roof with a waterproof tarp and set up the semblance of a livable campsite while his Type: Null stood watch. [break][break]

When he finished, there were two sleeping bags set up next to each other on comfortable, insulated flooring; a portable, gas-powered grill and basic utensils for a modest kitchen; and enough space for Nenet's scientific equipment. [break][break]

"What do you think? Good enough?" he asked her, stepping back with his hands on his hips to admire his work. [break][break]

The seriousness of Nenet's delivery told Zev everything he needed to know about this ethics violation. He was fully aware that human society generally operated on a moral compass separate from his own; he knew how to play by their rules at times, when need required it. [break][break]

But otherwise, he found the concept of 'ethics' arbitrary. Pointless. Limiting. [break][break]

Based on what he'd already observed of Nenet—with the fallen Minior from last autumn and now her interest in Type: Null—he guessed she felt the same way. [break][break]

Her word choice, too, was interesting. [break][break]

"So you regret getting caught, but not the experiment," Zev observed, his smile growing wider. Releasing her hand, he wrapped his arm around her shoulders and pulled her against his side. Even through their coats, the heat of him radiated out, warming them both. [break][break]

He pressed a kiss to her temple and murmured, "Your secrets are my secrets, Nenet. And you know how good I am at keeping them."

That much of the city remained unexplored did not surprise Zev. Lesser Megalo Tower's importance to the Megalopolans was obvious, simply from its size and dominance over the landscape. And from his own expeditions, he knew the wealth of knowledge stored there. [break][break]

"That's fine with us. This part of the city is as good as any." [break][break]

Zev turned away from Theo to take in their surroundings. The area had been spared the worst of Necrozma's devastation; though plenty of the taller buildings had been reduced to rubble, blocking off some of the smaller streets, some of the shorter ones remained standing. [break][break]

"The power I showed you on the submarine allows me to manipulate objects. Any object. That vending machine, for example," the Beast said, focusing on the large device just a few meters away. [break][break]

He raised a hand toward it. [break][break]

"I can't describe how I'm seeing it or how exactly I'm able to change it, but the results speak for themselves." [break][break]

He clenched his hand into a fist. Metal crumpled and glass shattered as the gravity pulling on the vending machine magnified with a single thought. Then he eased back, restoring the force of gravity to normal before the machine was totally obliterated. It remained in its crumpled state, dead Z-crystals spilling out of it with a raucous clatter. [break][break]

Zev turned to Theo. "But that's not all. Throw something at me. Something you don't mind losing."

"Not as much as I'd like," Zev admitted. "My focus was reaching the top of Lesser Megalo Tower and obtaining whatever data I could find from the computers there." [break][break]

He gestured to the distant structure just as light shone once more from the top of it. This time, it stayed on for longer. Zev tensed with a fighter's readiness, waiting for the telltale stampede of Megalopolan feet against the ground that heralded a horde's arrival. [break][break]

But nothing approached them. [break][break]

The light from the tower went out again. [break][break]

Zev relaxed his stance, though the crystals that had emerged, unbidden, to cover much of his body did not disappear back into his flesh. When he turned his head to look at Theo, a large section of his left cheek sported the black shards. [break][break]
