Zev noted the way Himiko's eyes lit up with delight and intrigue when he presented the small bottle to her. At her question, he nodded his head at his purple-furred Zoroark, who had been lingering patiently in a corner of the room. [break][break]

The Pokémon shimmered as she fashioned an illusion around herself. Within moments, a Nihilego had taken her place, its tentacles fluttering as it floated in midair. [break][break]

"Nihilego are poisonous Pokémon found in Ultra Space. That's what Ultra Beasts are: unique species of Pokémon that come from other worlds," Zev explained. "They're typically very aggressive, though many people have captured them now and are training them." [break][break]

He gestured to the vial on the table. [break][break]

"Nihilego poison has been known to override a person's autonomy, turning them into puppets of the Pokémon—or its master. People influenced by the poison become hostile even to their allies." [break][break]

Then he placed the second vial next to it. Like the other one, its label also bore the word NIHILEGO, but beneath that was the word ANTIDOTE. [break][break]

"You'll learn my name if you make it through a trial job," he said, before taking a sip from his beer. "In the next few days, you'll get a phone call from someone in the organization to assist with an errand. It could be smuggling, it could be collecting money from locals." [break][break]

Truly, he had no idea. Team Rocket's operations were so vast that anyone from a paper-pushing admin to a Beast carrying out an assassination could need a grunt's extra hands. For any number of reasons, too. [break][break]

"Either way, if you do a good enough job, you can consider yourself among our ranks. If not…" He shrugged, not caring. "You'll have to pay your debt back off another way. Any questions?"

Unfortunately, being the same entity as Necrozma did not mean Zev had access to the Pokémon's full understanding. Thoughts and feelings flowed between them in a steady stream, but much of what he received from his patron was difficult to describe in any human language. Incomprehensible. [break][break]

"It's difficult to say," Zev replied, frowning, "but from what I can tell, Necrozma seeks energy. The Tree of Life, the power spots both real and artificial, the light from other worlds. It doesn't discriminate based on where that energy source comes from, either." [break][break]

None of that was secret information. He had deduced it from reports and personal observations; surely a woman as intelligent as Lulu had, as well. [break][break]

Which meant she hoped Necrozma could discern when something was otherworldly or not. [break][break]

As soon as Theo withdrew the Pokéball from his pocket, Zev targeted it. He lightened the planet's pull on the capsule, though Theo would not be able to feel any change with his fingers wrapped around it. [break][break]

But when the underboss released the ball, it arced into the air following the trajectory of the throw. [break][break]

Then it kept on going, rising higher and higher in a curve until it had passed over their heads. [break][break]

Zev watched it disappear into the darkness. At some point, he figured it would hit one of the ruined buildings, but after that? He had no idea. [break][break]

"I think it's gravity," he said, turning to look at Theo again.

Schuyler's readiness to accept the mission impressed Zev. In all their interactions thus far, the other man had not bothered to ask many questions; in fact, Schuyler's keenness to help would have been suspicious if not for their macabre first meeting. [break][break]

"I'll forward you a list of names. We'll stay in touch by encrypted message," Zev said, in response to Schuyler's concern. "I'm also looking for a Zorua or Zoroark that can disguise me while I'm in public. I'm working on a fake identity to go with it." [break][break]

Little did he know the Pokémon would soon find its way into his hands, courtesy of jayden cross. [break][break]

Zev sipped his coffee, using the time to choose his next words with care. He had no interest in alarming other, nearby café patrons with the truth, in case they overheard. And Schuyler seemed like the type of person who preferred to know as little as possible. [break][break]

"That file," he pointed at the one containing information on the unnamed woman, "contains a report of my latest encounter with the DRK Triad. It happened just a few weeks ago. She turned this crusade of theirs into a personal matter."

The woman did have an athletic cut to her physique, with arms and shoulders that were too muscular to be considered lean. Zev inclined his head in acknowledgement. There was no end to Team Rocket's need for physical strength. [break][break]

"Joining our organization isn't like trying out a new gym or enrolling in a new sports club," the Beast said. "There are rules and expectations. A hierarchy to obey. And disobedience comes at a cost." [break][break]

Though he didn't pose a question, his implication was clear: Was Tina willing to sell her soul in that way, to pay off her debt? [break][break]

After a lull in conversation so she could chew on his words—and reply, if she wished—Zev asked, "Do you have any experience in security? Guard work?" [break][break]

The loan shark working for Team Rocket had not mentioned anything of her history to him, only her predicament.

Recruitment into Team Rocket was as varied as the reasons grunts had for joining. Luckily, Team Rocket's rule over Sootopolis meant that some of those avenues could take place in public. [break][break]

Seedy dive bars were perfect for meetings of questionable purpose, and Zev met with enough grunts looking for opportunity with a glass of alcohol in hand. [break][break]

The woman described to him had the misfortune of burying herself under massive debt; Team Rocket was her only chance at working her way back out of it. Zev assessed her with a critical eye as she waved at him, his expression neutral—in a cold, aloof way. [break][break]

He took a seat at the bar next to her. "Just beer. Your best bottle," he told the bartender. [break][break]

Moments later, a cold, open bottle appeared before him. He took a healthy swig, then glanced sidelong at the woman. [break][break]

"Tina Castellanos," Zev said, his tone even. Unimpressed. "Rumor has it you're in a lot of trouble. What can you do, other than spend money recklessly?"

That Himiko wasted no time establishing herself in the region meant she had more initiative and resourcefulness than the average grunt. Zev made a mental note of that, especially as she called him her supervisor. [break][break]

"Good work," he said, knowing that a little praise went a long way for many people. "I've been keeping myself occupied, but that's not what we're here to talk about." [break][break]

He walked toward a standing cabinet and opened it, revealing various laboratory equipment, including a shelf of assorted vials. Each one sported a white label with the names of their contents printed in clear, black letters. He selected two that were next to each other, then closed the cabinet again. [break][break]

"The poisons you're familiar with likely come from plant sources and Pokémon that are readily available in Kanto," Zev said, "or are obtainable through Team Rocket's resources." [break][break]

Zev placed one of the two vials on the table between him and Himiko. Its label bore the word NIHILEGO. [break][break]

"This is a poison I'm certain you've never used before. It comes from a Pokémon called Nihilego, an Ultra Beast."

Zev was silent for a long time after Bryan spoke, turning over the implications in his head. How strange it was for him to understand how the other man felt, at least in part, when otherwise they were very different people. [break][break]

But of course, Bryan's situation was nothing like his own. [break][break]

"It's the same with me," Zev said anyway, deciding that Bryan might appreciate the false sense of empathy created by sharing such information. "The person I was before my encounter with Necrozma was a different man." [break][break]

Instead of elaborating further, however, Zev put out the butt of the cigarette in the dirt and asked, "What was Elijah right about?" [break][break]

He didn't know who elijah gardner was, but that information was irrelevant to the conversation.

"We can always come back with more equipment so you can try again," Zev assured Nenet as he followed her out of the cottage. [break][break]

Though he could not do anything about the atmosphere, he'd fixed the hole in the roof; if the rain had damaged her machinery, then the tarp should prevent it from happening again. [break][break]

Type: Null looked over as they started walking toward the crater's edge. The man called out to the beast, "Stay here and keep watch. Don't let anything approach." [break][break]

Then he opened a second Pokéball and released his Dragapult. She uttered a cry in recognition upon seeing Nenet and floated toward the woman. [break][break]

"Dragapult, bring us down there with PHANTOM FORCE," Zev instructed the dual-type, pointing to the grove of bamboo stalks at the bottom of the massive basin. [break][break]

His Pokémon nodded, and then, in the blink of an eye, brought them to the grotto as instructed. [break][break]

The strange shrine seemed unchanged since their last visit.
