"From a place we've come to call Ultra Deep Sea. There's a portal to it in Granite Cave, not far from Dewford Town," Zev said, observing Himiko's obvious rapture with the illusory Ultra Beast. [break][break]

He waved his hand. His Zoroark dropped the mirage, restoring her visage and breaking the spell. [break][break]

"We send expeditions through the rift into Ultra Deep Sea all the time, so sign up for a few and you might be able to catch your own Nihilego." [break][break]

Himiko's insightfulness earned her a nod of confirmation from Zev. Opening a drawer, he removed two unwrapped, sterilized syringes from it and placed them on the table next to the vials. [break][break]

"Follow me, and bring those with you. We're going to see a prisoner," he said, already moving toward the door. His Zoroark fell into step beside him. [break][break]

Not far from that laboratory was an operating room for Team Rocket's more heinous experiments. Strapped to a metal table was a middle-aged man, gagged and slightly incoherent from sedatives. [break][break]

"A government clerk who was supposed to be spying on League Council matters for us," Zev explained to Himiko. "We found out he was acting as a double agent for the League instead." [break][break]

He closed the door to the room and walked up to the table. [break][break]

"Would you like to see how those poisons work firsthand?" he asked her. His voice was as cold and unfeeling as the stars.

Zev greeted Maki with a single nod of his head. His eyes lowered to her phone's screen as she opened the map. The girl had done her research. Though he didn't show it on his face, he found himself impressed by her initiative. [break][break]

"Between the two of us and our Pokémon, we should be able to cover all escape routes," Zev said, leaning over to point at Maki's map. Among the maze-like warehouses, three makeshift alleys led away from the center where the defector was likely hiding. [break][break]

"You and I will approach from this direction while my Gengar and your Froslass go around the back here." [break][break]

With the plan decided, they set off to hunt their prey. At Zev's low whistle, Smoke detached from his shadow and sped off into the darkness with a wicked grin. [break][break]

The target's hideout soon came into view: a warehouse as dilapidated and abandoned as others around it. After scanning their immediate surroundings to ensure no one was watching, Zev nodded at Maki, signaling her to take the lead.

Once they reached their campsite, Zev returned his Blastoise and Dragapult to their Pokéballs. Type: Null lingered, unused to receiving orders from anyone other than its master. [break][break]

"You heard her," Zev told the Pokémon, a sharpness in his voice that hadn't been there moments before. Type: Null huffed but turned and trotted off. [break][break]

Alone now, Zev moved to stand behind Nenet and wrapped his arms around her. He nuzzled her hair with his nose and said in a low voice, "Of course it will. Trust me." [break][break]

He urged her away from the edge of the crater, his hand holding hers once more so they could follow Type: Null together. [break][break]

After a few minutes of searching, the ground began to quake. A deep howl filled the air as Type: Null beckoned for its master. Zev and Nenet reached the Celesteela as it started to tear itself out of the ground. [break][break]

"Quickly!" the man yelled as he recalled his Pokémon back into a ball. Then he helped Nenet onto the Celesteela before jumping up after her. [break][break]

Levitating himself—or any other person—had not occurred to Zev. Even though he'd been able to suspend an entire ship in the air above the ocean, that had only happened in the middle of its descent. He and Theo were already standing on the ground, not caught in mid-fall. [break][break]

But, thought Zev, it might work if they kick off. "It's worth a try," he said, his mind already isolating the threads of gravity that bound him to the planet. "I'll try on myself first." [break][break]

As he lessened the gravitation pull on his own body, he immediately noticed a change in his weight. He felt lighter, as if buoyed by water, but without any of its resistance. Even the motion of raising his arm was easier, the usual heaviness of the limb missing from the equation. [break][break]

Bending his knees, Zev pushed off from the ground as if he were jumping. But instead, he soared, rising into the air like an untethered balloon. Air whipped at his hair and clothes as he rushed past the darkened skyscrapers of Lesser Megalopolis. [break][break]

Before he could rise out of Theo's sight, Zev adjusted the pull of gravity on himself once more, remembering how it felt to hold a ship aloft. His ascent slowed as the force of the planet on his body increased. [break][break]

And then he stopped. His body hung in the air in perfect balance. The devastated city stretched out before him, a scabbed wound on the earth. The black sky above him glittered with stars. [break][break]

Exhilaration flooded him, and he grinned with mad delight. [break][break]

After a moment of quiet exultation, Zev allowed himself to descend at a slow and safe pace. He landed on the broken concrete without harm, then restored his gravity to normal. [break][break]

"Your turn," he told Theo, mentally adjusting the planet's hold on the underboss.

Let them come, the Rocket Beast thought. He had already resolved to kill the DRK Triad for their actions against Necrozma. If they wanted to seek him out, he would welcome the clash. [break][break]

But instead of giving voice to these thoughts, he nodded at Schuyler. "The League sends its own expeditions into Lesser Megalopolis, so you can likely join a Ranger or researcher on a trip." [break][break]

Zev finished the rest of his coffee in a few large gulps. Now that their exchange had taken place, it was in their best interest to leave. Schuyler couldn't afford to be identified as a member of Team Rocket. [break][break]

"Message me if you have any questions," the Beast said. "I'll forward you any new revelations we uncover, too."

Neffatari Nzingha's light touch on Zev's wrist grounded him, momentarily quieting the snarling hunger that rolled through his body. He focused on the chatter over Team Rocket's comms, eyeing the Unbound Hoopa at BARNABY FINCH's mention. [break][break]

"While you're targeting the Hoopa, I'll put Kyurem at a disadvantage," Zev said to Bee, mint frost, and THEO BECKETT over the comms. [break][break]

The Rocket Beast's gaze lifted to regard the enormous dragon. The size of it was truly gargantuan; its face alone was probably the width of several city blocks. [break][break]

But that was enough, just barely. [break][break]

Heedless of any agents of the League who might be watching, Zev reached for the sky, past the atmosphere that shielded their planet, past the nearest stars and into the void of space itself. [break][break]

And then he brought it down onto the Boundary Pokémon, attempting to cover both of its eyes with impenetrable darkness. [break][break]

zev can summon unnatural darkness to cover an area within a limited radius. only he and his pokémon can see through the darkness; anyone else within it is blind. [break][break]

any lights within the area go out and can’t be turned back on while the darkness is active, and outside lights cannot penetrate it. anyone observing from outside the area will see it as a dome-shaped, starless void.

Taking advantage of Kyurem's potential blindness, Zev's Charizard raced toward her foe, blasting it with another DRAGON BREATH. Unfortunately, the accumulation of ice and snow deadened her wings. Before Zev's very eyes, she froze over and began the long plummet to the ground. [break][break]

His expression apathetic, Zev took in his surroundings. For a simulation, the butchery felt incredibly real, all the way down to the fresh smell of blood as the butcher sliced the tail off a Slowpoke. [break][break]

"This place is disgusting," the Rocket Beast commented idly, remembering the strict regulations he'd memorized when starting up his bar. "I see about ten code violations just standing here." [break][break]

Nevertheless, he picked up a knife and approached a listless Slowpoke. [break][break]

"How do you like to eat tails, Sato?" Zev asked, holding the Pokémon still with one hand and slicing its tail off with the other. "I prefer them grilled with some salt." [break][break]

Zev nodded in agreement with Aidan's deduction. He assumed they wouldn't have to resort to torture beyond threat of harm, considering the low pain threshold of most scientists. [break][break]

"They own a mix of different Pokémon—some Normal, some Psychic, some Dark, some Poison." Typical, for Team Rocket's grunts. [break][break]

After a few minutes, they reached the rundown apartment building. Like the rest of the district, it had seen better days. Many windows were reinforced with steel bars, and a generous amount of graffiti covered its outer face. [break][break]

"Second floor, room 2F," Zev said to Aidan in a low voice. Opening a Poké Ball, he released his Ariados. The spider skittered ahead as her master entered the building. [break][break]

The front lobby was small, a filthy rug spread across part of the wooden flooring. Ignoring the elevator, Zev started up the narrow, rickety stairs.

Agents of the League arrived, brightening the sky with multiple uses of SUNNY DAY. A gnawing hunger spread through Zev as he stood beneath the light, itching to snatch it up for himself. But Kyurem continued to rage; he had no choice but to focus on the enemy at hand. [break][break]

Dragons' roars filled the air as first Zekrom, then Rayquaza descended upon the battlefield. That meant Remiel Calcifet and Eva Morales had joined the fight, bringing the full might of their powers and patrons with them. [break][break]

A crescent moon hung like a scythe's blade over Slateport City, an ominous portent of the night's events. Dressed in black to blend in with the shadows, Zev waited at the entrance to the abandoned shipping yard. Once a bustling place of business, it now lay silent as a grave, full of secrets and dangers. Team Rocket knew of one such secret, recently acquired: the hideout of a defector, a young woman named Helena Brodie. According to the intel, she had joined after dropping out of college. Lacking any skill or expertise, she remained a grunt until the battles on the resurfaced island, after which she disappeared. [break][break]

Typical, Zev thought. War frightened the grunts with cowardly hearts. Either they learned to rise above such weakness and become suitable tools for Team Rocket, or they vanished—usually at the hands of Beasts such as himself. [break][break]

But on that night, he was not the executioner. That task fell upon another low-ranking member of the crime syndicate; he was merely there to supervise the job and make sure the task saw completion, one way or another. [break][break]

And so he waited, hands in his pockets, his breath clouding on the chilly air. In his shadow, his Gengar lurked, red eyes watching for trouble.

As the shrine activated, the grove burst into verdant life around them. Zev eyed the flora with suspicion, but then his gaze drew back to Nenet as if something about her had suddenly caught his eye. [break][break]

His throat went dry and his heart skipped a beat—a strange, unfamiliar feeling. As concerning as it was, however, he couldn't take his eyes off his wife. Somehow, she appeared even more beautiful and alluring than normal. [break][break]

Compelled by a sudden desire to touch her, Zev stepped up and traced the curve of her spine with a gentle hand. Leaning in, he was about to kiss her neck when her whisper brought his attention to the full moon hanging above them. [break][break]
