Zev cast a glance over his shoulder at the pouring rain outside the café before joining Nenet at the counter to peruse the menu. He was grateful that the two of them did not have a habit of public displays of affection, as it made the façade of a first date that much easier. [break][break]

"Work, actually," he replied, the answer coming naturally. Ever since acquiring his Zoroark, he'd spent time fabricating a basic false identity, the details of which he hoped to refine over time. Nenet's question actually helped in that regard. [break][break]

"I used to be a cop back in Castelia City, but decided I needed a change in career—and in scenery," Zev explained as he paid for both their coffees, plus two packets of Pokémon treats for Clefable and Zoroark. [break][break]

The group made their way to a small alcove with a table and comfortable armchairs. He gave the Pokémon one bag of treats each before settling into a chair with his coffee. [break][break]

"I own a security company now, so we contract out to various buildings throughout Hoenn and also offer personal security contracts. You know, for high-profile people. VIPs. We're still small, though. Not super well known." [break][break]

After taking a sip, he turned the question back on Nenet, though he knew her answer intimately. "What about you? Were you born here, or did something draw you here like it did me?"

"Not again" was right. Zev had clashed with the mighty leviathan twice before, with neither scenario resulting in him and his associates having the advantage. In fact, both times, they'd had to retreat. [break][break]

On that wide stretch of open land right against the water's edge, they were vulnerable. There was nothing they could use as suitable defense, except Zev's armor, which was not enough to shield Oscar. [break][break]

The Rocket Beast could only think of one solution that could buy them time. [break][break]

"Forget the power spot! We can come back another day!" he shouted at Oscar as he turned to square off against Kyogre. [break][break]

The crystals covering his right arm warped and expanded with startling speed, morphing into tiers of spikes. Twisting together, they formed a large, cannon-like armature ending in great, wicked claws. As white-hot energy gathered within the curled talons, Zev aimed them at the distant Kyogre. [break][break]

once per thread, zev can fire a powerful laser beam that burns everything in its path.

A split second before ORIGIN PULSE fired, so too did a tremendous laser beam. The attacks collided in mid-air, erupting in a massive explosion of energy. The shockwave split the ocean and knocked Zev off his feet.

He jerked his thumb over his shoulder. "I passed by a cozy-looking café on my way here. Want to see if there's a quiet little nook where we can enjoy some coffee?" he offered. [break][break]

Zoroark-as-Obstagoon peered at the Clefable before turning to follow her master and his date down the street. The Illusion Fox Pokémon was certain that her and Zev's disguises were immaculate; if Nenet touched her husband's face, she would even feel the difference in form. [break][break]

How could a simple Clefable see through them? Impossible.

Theo was right to be concerned. Zev could obliterate him with a thought. But that brought Zev zero advantage and would likely turn the whole crime syndicate against him, including declan walsh. Which was not conducive to his plans. [break][break]

So he helped the underboss jump to a reasonable height, held him there for a brief moment, then lowered him back to the ground. The gravity restored, Zev tilted his head at Theo. [break][break]

The enraged roars of provoked Drampa filled the air above the fields surrounding Verdanturf. DRAGON BREATH felled trees while TWISTER flattened winter crops. The town itself was untouched, but should the dragons continue their rampage unhindered, it too might fall victim to their attacks. [break][break]

Entirely covered in black crystal, Zev watched from a distance. His Hatterene and Misdreavus had been the ones to whip the Drampa into a frenzy. Now they were safely back in their Pokéballs. [break][break]

If the Rocket Beast was lucky, local Rangers would take to the field to calm the angered dragons. That was when he would strike.

Since Zev's encounter with Necrozma in November, he had disappeared from the public eye. He'd closed down his bar and moved out of his apartment in Slateport City. Instead of going out during the day, he only snuck out at night beneath the cover of darkness. But such an arrangement could only last for a short time. [break][break]

On that cold and blustery day in January, he walked down a crowded street in broad daylight for the first time. But he did not wear the face of Zev Harcourt, former bar owner, known member of Team Rocket. [break][break]

Shoulder-length blonde hair, tied back into a low ponytail, replaced his short mess of black hair. Instead of their usual blue color, his eyes were a light hazel. Even the angles of his face were slightly different, just enough to transform him from a terrorist to a civilian. [break][break]

His shiny Zoroark stalked by his side, the reason and source of the illusion. As an added measure, she herself had taken on the appearance of an Obstagoon, a Pokémon Zev did not possess. [break][break]

As the man approached the boardwalk, he spotted the figure of a woman he knew well. But his newest false identity, that of Unovan transplant Jason Kellner, had never met her before. [break][break]

In fact, it was their first date. [break][break]

"Neffatari Nzingha?" Zev asked as he neared his wife, replicating a genuine mix of uncertainty and hope in his voice as he extended a hand. The smile he offered her was light, charming. "I'm Jason. Nice to meet you."

BARNABY FINCH's compliment went unanswered, for mint frost chimed in immediately. Zev frowned as he gazed up at Kyurem. All Pokémon brimmed with infinity energy, but if Necrozma desired to feast on Kyurem, surely his patron would have already appeared. Was there a reason for Necrozma's absence? [break][break]

The ground shook with tremendous violence as Kyurem's claws tore through it. A massive fissure split the earth nearby, and Zev instinctively reached for Nenet in case it swallowed her up. Thankfully, their group was far enough away that no harm came to them. [break][break]

In the sky above, Rayquaza bellowed, and the troops of the League raised their voices in a valorous cheer. [break][break]

Both warnings from oscar clayton and Neffatari Nzingha reached Zev beneath the raucous din of their unexpected allies. He nodded at the latter with a grave expression, understanding her desire for caution. [break][break]

"It's too risky," he said at last to Mint. "When Necrozma fought Eternatus, the devastation was tremendous. We'd wipe ourselves out if it clashed with Kyurem." [break][break]

Distantly, Zev heard the roar of his Bloodmoon Ursaluna as the bear charged at Kyurem with HEADLONG RUSH. [break][break]

For Zev, the euphoria induced by the Ultra Crater's plant life drained at the same rate it did for Nenet. As the Celesteela ran out of fuel and reached the top of its arc, his mind raced for a solution out of their predicament. [break][break]

And when the Ultra Beast hung in the air for a split second before its fall, the answer hit Zev like a bullet. [break][break]

He shifted his perception, allowing himself to see the indescribable threads that connected everything to the planet like cosmic tissue. Isolating the ones tied to himself and Nenet, he lessened gravity's pull on them both. [break][break]

Though the Celesteela plummeted to the ground, the two humans remained suspended in the air, overlooking the vast landscape of Ultra Crater. At that height, the wind whipped around them, teasing at their clothes and hair with harmless fingers. [break][break]

Zev tightened his grip on Nenet, more out of instinctual protectiveness than actual need. "Not afraid of heights, are you?" he teased. [break][break]

Mentally, he increased the pull of gravity in small increments, allowing them to descend at a slow and easy pace until they touched back down on the ground. [break][break]

Upon seeing his Charizard's rapid descent, Zev did the one thing that made sense to save it: he forced himself to shove aside all the visual chaos surrounding him so he could focus on the threads of gravity pulling the Pokémon to its doom. [break][break]

Flinging out both his hands as if the gesture would help him, he freed the frozen Fire-type from the planet's grasp. [break][break]

zev can manipulate the gravitational field in his immediate vicinity, allowing him to change the planet's gravitational pull on everything within range, including himself.

Charizard's descent immediately slowed until she hit the snow-covered ground with barely a thud. Zev released his manipulation, restoring the gravity pulling on her, then turned to survey the scene. [break][break]

Within line of sight were none other than freya morningstar, Navy, and Caleb Harcourt, among others. Caleb was yelling something at the Councilwoman over the din of battle. [break][break]

Once, the sight of his brother had invoked a mix of emotions within Zev: possessiveness and expectation, at first, then frustration and anger later. Now he felt nothing. Caleb was nobody to him, a mere human whose fleeting existence held no significance in Zev's grand design. [break][break]

Someone else, however, did. [break][break]

"We should move," Zev told Neffatari Nzingha before leading her closer to Team Rocket's forces. [break][break]

As they drew up next to Elisabeth Fiorelli on her Glastrier, BARNABY FINCH with his Steelix, and Steven Campbell with his Delphox, Zev released a second Pokémon: his Bloodmoon Ursaluna. The great bear roared in challenge before dashing toward Kyurem and attacking with HAMMER ARM. [break][break]

"Bee, Fiorelli," Zev said to the admin and underboss in greeting. He glanced sidelong at Steven, not recognizing his disguise. "Grunt." [break][break]

No aspirations, no skills, no Pokémon battling experience. Harvey really had been coasting through life doing the bare minimum, at least up until that point. Zev doubted the résumé of thrown punches was the result of any proper training, either. [break][break]

Whether he picked up on Harvey's redirection or not, Zev didn't show it. Instead, he shook his head. [break][break]

"Intel gathering was not our specialty," he said. "We were a hitman, a contractor, for nearly a decade before becoming a Rocket Beast." [break][break]

And now he was something more than that. Something that transcended careers and ranks. [break][break]

"Come to the submarine sometime for a spar," Zev said, the coldness of his tone making his words sound like an order instead of a suggestion. "I'd want to see how well you throw those punches." [break][break]

The GPS piped up, indicating that the road leading to the safehouse was just ahead. They would arrive in just a few minutes.
