Before the Haunter could flay Rhys open, Zev's Gengar burst into the room. Smoke battered the hostile Pokémon with HEX, sending it flying and phasing through the wall. The Haunter swooped back moments later to retaliate. [break][break]

As the ghosts dueled, Zev peered into the room to check on Rhys. "Do you have what we came here for?" he asked, keeping his voice low. His Rotom zipped by his head to join the fight. [break][break]

Between Zev's two Pokémon, the Haunter was finally beaten into submission. It collapsed in a pile of dark shadow upon the floor, completely unconscious. [break][break]

Rotom returned to Zev's side and into its Pokéball. Tucking it back into his pocket, the Rocket Beast turned to the grunt. "We need to get out of here. Recall your Pokémon, and Smoke will get us out of here." [break][break]

As he spoke, his Gengar hovered closer, ready to transport them several blocks away with PHANTOM FORCE.

Between the two of them, Zev and Nomi finished chopping the tails off the current batch of Slowpoke. The head butcher stepped outside, leaving the two Rockets to deal with the amputated Pokémon. [break][break]

Zev picked one up in both arms. It was heavy, if only because it might as well have been dead weight. "Open the door for me," he told Nomi as he walked toward the back door. Once it was open, he would drop the Slowpoke onto the back steps so it could wander off. [break][break]

The method made sense. Slowpoke were dull enough that capturing wild ones often posed zero issues. Keeping them until they grew their tails back was too costly, so releasing them back into the wild—or, in this case, the streets—was the more cost-effective solution. [break][break]

Eventually, the butcher was emptied of the Dopey Pokémon. Their remaining tails boiled in large pots for stew. Giving one of them a stir with a long spoon, Zev asked Nomi, "What's your plan for when we encounter the DRK Triad again?" [break][break]

Zev did a double take. Normally, scenarios started with him standing still, allowing for a smoother transition between the machine in standby mode and the first simulation. It seemed the additions to the machine allowed for more advanced—and jarring—starts. [break][break]

He barely had time to take in his unfamiliar, futuristic surroundings when the wail of sirens abruptly filled the air. His head jerked in the direction of the noise; in the corner of his eye, he caught sight of Lulu Flint, who had entered the simulation with him. [break][break]

Moments later, law enforcement came into view, riding Genesect. Genesect! Shock colored Zev's face, but training and experience took over in a matter of moments. Turning in his seat to focus on the road, he yelled at Lulu: [break][break]

"We need to lose them! Those alleys coming up are probably our best bet!" [break][break]

Zev caught the look in Maki's eye as her gaze met his. He nodded once, giving her permission to proceed as she saw fit. [break][break]

In the meantime, he opened a Pokéball, releasing his Rotom. A brief hand signal conveyed his order to his Pokémon: search the warehouse for anything that suggested their target had more information, including anything digital. [break][break]

After a quick bob in the air to acknowledge the order, the Plasma Pokémon silently zipped into the building.

Zev's crystalline carapace protected him from the same aches that plagued Oscar as both men rose to their feet. However, a sudden wave of exhaustion flooded Zev; it took all of his remaining strength not to fall back to the ground. [break][break]

With the fatigue came a spike of ravenous hunger. The nearby power spot drew his gaze again. Kyogre's attack had ripped away the Tera crystals surrounding it, leaving it exposed. [break][break]

Ignoring Oscar for the moment, Zev staggered to the power spot and braced against it with both hands. The black crystals of his armor surged over him, covering him from head to toe. And then, heedless of the dangers, he took a deep breath. [break][break]

Dynergy flowed upward, unimpeded. The man gasped as it siphoned into his body, his shards acting as a conduit. He consumed it greedily, his strength restoring as the energy filled him. Then, finally, it was too much to bear. His heart was racing so quickly it felt like it would explode. [break][break]

Zev wrenched himself away, reeling from the onslaught of foreign energy. The experience had been completely unlike eating light, which was warm in a comfortable way. Instead, Dynergy felt volatile, powerful, impossible to contain. A double-edged sword. [break][break]

"Let's go," he rasped at Oscar, barely able to find his voice. He turned and stumbled toward the path leading back to Sootopolis.

The woman didn't run. Instead, her Kommo-o PROTECTed against the attack and fought back. [break][break]

That suited Zev just fine. [break][break]

Releasing his Flutter Mane from its Pokéball, he issued it a command with a hand signal. At once, the Paradox Pokémon brought them closer with PHANTOM FORCE. The darkness of night enveloped them, providing decent cover. [break][break]

As Flutter Mane swooped toward the Kommo-o to distract it, Zev focused his attention on the growling Drampa. He seized its body with his mind. Before the girl's very eyes, the Pokémon's roar of agony cut short as the pull of gravity crushed it into the ground. [break][break]

Hoping to take advantage of any immediate shock and horror, Zev swiped at the woman with a long tendril of razor-sharp crystal.

As Team Rocket's comms continued to crackle with chatter, Zev tuned in to Neffatari Nzingha's input. She was right: they had no idea what allowing Kyurem to consume Zekrom as well as Reshiram would entail. Better to prevent further frustrations than invite them. [break][break]

He gave her a single nod of his head. Then, once again, mint frost piped up about Zev's powers. "I can't replicate it exactly," he said, "only with certain energy, like light." [break][break]

Still, the question gave him an idea, especially after jayden cross conjured an enormous icicle and flung it skyward. A telltale itch spread along the length of Zev's right arm as his crystals tore through his sleeve in tiers of spikes. Heat built up in his chest, the accumulation of gathered light. [break][break]

Within moments, his arm transformed into a cannon-like mechanism of twisting, alien design. It ended in a set of hooked claws. Energy began to gather there, building with a loud thrumming sound. [break][break]

"Everyone behind me," Zev said into his mic as he took several steps toward Hoopa and Kyurem, even as a cloak of frozen air shimmered into existence around the two Pokémon. [break][break]

once per thread, zev can fire a powerful laser beam that burns everything in its path.

Legs spread wide to root himself to the ground, the Rocket Beast raised his arm. The energy at the end was blindingly white, radiating immense heat. Bracing himself, he gritted his teeth and fired. [break][break]

He almost chalked the visit up to a waste of time, but he had a hunch he'd learn more about Lulu's strange Minior soon. Casting a last, contemplative look upon it, he turned and left the laboratory. [break][break]

As soon as he emerged from the submarine into the fresh air of Sootopolis City, Zev took his phone from his pocket and tapped out a text to his wife. Because the last thing Nenet would want was to be caught unaware. [break][break]

Lulu's confusion reflected on Zev's face at her inquiry, taking the form of a frown and furrowed brow. [break][break]

"What are you talking about?" he asked, clearly unaware he'd been using the incorrect pronouns when referring to himself. "Just mention my name. Definitely avoid saying anything about our organization." [break][break]

Lulu did not need to know that Nenet might suspect an affiliation with Team Rocket anyway. In fact, it would be dangerous to reveal to anyone that Nenet knew Zev's history with the crime syndicate and his long career as a contract killer. [break][break]

He needed to maintain Team Rocket's trust, after all, as well as her safety.

Zev smirked at Clefable, amused by the Pokémon's mistrust. Though Clefable's behavior was not an act but genuine dislike of the man, it only reinforced the image that the two humans were strangers to each other. [break][break]

Turning his attention back to Nenet, Zev said, "No uniform, though we all dress the same while on the job." Then his smile widened, and a teasing quality entered his voice. "Does that disappoint you?" [break][break]

Just then, a great boom of thunder shook the café, and the lights flickered ominously. Other customers murmured among themselves, marveling at the great downpour of rain from the safety of the indoors.

Zev shrugged. He was not a medical expert, but he was not about to admit that to the grunt. "Any major vein will do. The poison should travel via the bloodstream to the brain in a matter of minutes," he said. [break][break]

Reports of Nihilego poisoning described the same symptoms: a sharp and sudden change in personality, aggression, loss of rational thought. Some victims reported not remembering what they said or did while under the poison's influence. [break][break]

Once Himiko administered the toxin, Zev ungagged the hapless man strapped to the table, who was slowly gaining lucidity. "Ask him whatever questions you like. Observe his behavior to your satisfaction. And have the antidote ready, just in case." [break][break]

Of course, the Beast was not concerned about their own safety. Most people posed no threat, not when he was in the room.

Since laying eyes on the Minior, Zev knew exactly who might have the answers for Lulu. Yet he had refrained from mentioning the name, simply because introducing her into the equation could complicate matters. [break][break]

However, he also knew the person would be very cross with him if he decided not to give her the opportunity to study the unique Pokémon. That, ultimately, forced him to make a choice. [break][break]

"We know a Minior expert," Zev said to Lulu. "An astrobiologist at the Mossdeep Space Center named Neffatari Nzingha. If you reach out to her, mention that we recommended her to you. Either way, she should be willing to meet."

When only one person arrived at the fields outside Verdanturf to handle the situation, Zev hesitated, frowning. He had hoped for more. The woman dressed in a dragon costume did not seem like much of a threat. In fact, she looked like she was ready for a cozy nap on her couch. [break][break]

Still, she summoned her Kommo-o as a defensive maneuver. The Drampa roared at their dragon cousin, still too agitated to see sense. One of them lunged at the Kommo-o using FLY. [break][break]

Zev watched, waiting to see if the young woman would flee in terror or if she would stand her ground. If the latter, then he knew he had to get rid of her.
