After the simulation began, Zev took a moment to survey his surroundings. The vast desert landscape reminded him of reports of Ultra Desert. Though he'd never visited, he assumed that the generated scenario and that pocket of Ultra Space must be similar. [break][break]

Eventually, the Iron Treads and human soldiers drew Zev's gaze. He took some steps toward them out of curiosity, his sharp eyes taking in various details of the soldiers' uniforms. Unfortunately, he didn't recognize the insignia. [break][break]

Was the simulation showing him a potential future, as the Cyclizar one had? [break][break]

"It looks like we're in a warzone," he said to his partner for the run. In the distance, the enemy stood in ranks. "Neither side has the advantage on this terrain. The technology and strategy used will determine the outcome." [break][break]

He surveyed the battle lines again and pointed to the Paradox Pokémon awaiting commands. [break][break]

"I recommend we charge with the Iron Treads in the vanguard and the human soldiers taking up the rear." [break][break]

Neffatari Nzingha and oscar clayton reached Zev at the same time. As the shimmering barrier of the Shadow Nidoqueen's PROTECT rose around them, the Xurkitree exuded a brilliant light from its head. The light drew Zev's eyes like a magnet. He inhaled greedily, and it blinked out for a moment before the Pokémon generated more. [break][break]

As the light filled him, he felt his strength restoring. The fog in his head began to clear, and the shakiness in his limbs ceased. [break][break]

"Thanks, Oscar," the Beast said, rising to his feet with Nenet's help. To the woman, he said, "I'm okay. Are you all right?" [break][break]

He gave her a once-over. A crack in her helmet indicated exactly where Hoopa's fist had hit. Zev's grip on her tightened as he seethed with fury. He turned to his Hatterene, who stood nearby, awaiting commands. [break][break]

"Attack the Hoopa with everything you have." [break][break]

With an impish smirk, the witch teleported a short distance into the air and lashed out at the djinn with SPRINGTIDE STORM. [break][break]

"That wasn't real," Zev said, convinced that everyone who said otherwise had suffered a hallucination. It had been the trick of a Pokémon and nothing more. "We battled at the Ancient Tomb and that was it." [break][break]

Still, the Zacian that emerged from the stone conjured the vivid mental image of a Zamazenta that had done the same. Zev watched from behind a mask of black crystal as it took the sword from Lulu and transformed before their very eyes. [break][break]

When the heroic dog beckoned, Necrozma's Avatar saw no reason to refuse. Every atom in his body wished to rip Eternatus into pieces and drink deeply of the energy housed within its flesh. [break][break]

Zev nodded at Zacian and broke into a run as it led them into battle. [break][break]

Comets rained down upon the field. Though they phased right through Flutter Mane, the Drampa kept it busy, even as they were struck by the Hydreigon's attack. [break][break]

Zev was not spared; a meteor smashed him into the ground. Though his crystalline armor saved him from injury, he was crushed beneath the weight of the celestial rock. It was enough of a distraction for the woman to flee astride her Pokémon. [break][break]

Frustrated that the tide had turned against him, Zev obliterated the fallen comet. It burst into dust and fragments of stone. By then, the Drampa were either incapacitated and lying scattered around the field or had fled. [break][break]

So much for using them to draw out local Rangers forces for decimation. With a heavy sigh, Zev recalled his Flutter Mane and released his Beheeyem to teleport them both back to Sootopolis.

Claws caught flesh with a satisfying spray of blood—but not enough, Zev observed. If the girl ran now, she could bandage her wounds and live to see another day. But with one fainted Pokémon and the Drampa on the offensive, that remained to be seen. [break][break]

Unfortunately for Zev, the Drampa were indiscriminate. They attacked him as well, pummeling him with their bodies. His crystals left gashes in their scales, drawing out more cries. [break][break]

While the Hydreigon WORKED UP, one of the enraged Drampa kicked up a TWISTER. A vicious cyclone whipped into existence around Zev, flinging him away from the fight. [break][break]

His Flutter Mane loosed one more MOONBLAST at the nearest foe, not caring who it hit, before chasing after him.

As bodies fell at Zev's feet, they dematerialized. His surroundings melted away, revealing a different landscape—the same one that periodically appeared in half-rendered dreams. [break][break]

In the distance, Dynamaxed Pokémon battled, destroying the land. Even farther away, Eternatus glided in the air. [break][break]

An instinctive urge to destroy filled Zev as soon as he caught sight of it; his eyes, bright with hunger, followed its movements across the sky. His skin itched as crystals spread to cover even more of his body. [break][break]

So focused was he on his—Necrozma's—ancient adversary that he did not notice the two gleaming weapons embedded in stone. Nor did he care if Lulu Flint had drawn closer or if she was elsewhere in the scenario.

The CLANGING SCALES of the Kommo-o kept caused both Zev and Flutter Mane to falter. The latter screeched in pain and frustration before unleashing a MOONBLAST in the dragon's direction. [break][break]

Taking advantage of any distraction his Paradox Pokémon provided, the Rocket Beast lunged at the costumed woman again. In a flash, he crossed the distance between them, raking at her with razor-sharp, crystalline claws. [break][break]

Nearby, the dying Drampa cried out, bellowing in mournful agony. Its brethren responded, their roars echoing across the wrecked fields. [break][break]

Half a dozen Drampa swooped at the humans and their battling Pokémon, unable to differentiate friend from foe. In their outrage, they sought to drive away any and all intruders on their territory.

Zev adopted a pleased, hopeful expression at Nenet's words. Sipping his coffee, he reached out and brushed the back of her hand with his knuckles in a subtle caress. [break][break]

"I'd love that," he said, further distancing his new persona from his true self by using that word. [break][break]

Then he withdrew his hand, resting it casually on the table. "I'm glad you took a chance on me, Nenet. Dating apps are always hit or miss, but I think I scored the jackpot with you." [break][break]

For the next hour, they continued to chat, touching on various shallow topics common to first dates. When the rain finally abated, they bid each other farewell and went their separate ways. [break][break]

Much later, Zev returned home without his disguise, kissed Nenet all over, and laughed with her over how silly their fake date had been. And in the privacy of their home, he thanked her for her being so helpful.

Theo's words carried an undercurrent of hope and wonder. And what leader within Team Rocket wouldn't want to finish the conquest of the region in a matter of moments? Why waste precious resources when a single man could decimate the world with a mere thought? [break][break]

But Zev remembered the way Necrozma stalled and fell, vulnerable, after depleting too much of its energy. It hadn't been able to protect itself from the Megalopolans' attacks, relying instead on the curious human that carried its shards within his body. [break][break]

"That's a nice thought, if it were true," he said. "The reality is I don't know the limits to my powers yet. I told you before, I haven't had time to test them." [break][break]

And the last thing he wanted was to face an enemy without the full knowledge of what he could do—and what he couldn't.

The devastating beam of light dissipated on the air. At the same time, exhaustion crashed through Zev. He fell to his knees in the snow, using the last of his strength to remain upright instead of collapsing completely. The crystals of his right arm returned to their normal shape. [break][break]

Then, without warning, the hunger stirred earlier by Kyurem's presence magnified a thousandfold. Instinctively, Zev scanned his surroundings for anything to consume—a Power Spot, a light source—but the storm obscured too much. [break][break]

It didn't help that the ravening hunger made it difficult to think straight. His brain felt heavy with fog. Shaking his head in an attempt to clear it, he looked toward Neffatari Nzingha as she shouted at him. [break][break]

Despite his body's protests, the Rocket Beast struggled to his feet. He managed to take a few staggering steps in her direction before his legs gave way again. "Shit!" [break][break]

Fury rose in him, as sharp as the hunger, as compelling as the need to protect his wife. [break][break]

Recalling his Bloodmoon Ursaluna, Zev released his Hatterene instead. "Go see if she's okay," he ordered the Psychic-type, who nodded and teleported to Nenet's side to cast HEAL PULSE on her. [break][break]

The poison took a few minutes to reach the victim's brain, but once it did, his sluggishness and frightened demeanor transformed in an instant. Straining against his binds, he lashed out at Himiko with increasingly violent threats, answering none of her questions. [break][break]

Zev's symptoms were unlike any food poisoning he'd ever experienced before. His entire body was tense with an unnatural alertness, causing him to jump at every small movement. Oddities lurked at the edge of his vision, only to disappear when he tried to focus on them. [break][break]

Oscar studied the various energies present within Hoenn, so it stood to reason he might know a thing or two about why Dynergy was making Zev feel so awful. At least Oscar's solution made sense. Zev nodded wearily in agreement. [break][break]
